City In Flux

Nicole Sellars

Cranes are one of the most obvious ways to tell a city, place, building is in flux. Cranes show you that something is been rebuilt. Re-designed, to fit in with modern day age. Take these flats for example, in the right photo the building looks worn out and dated, they’re aging buildings that look run down and in no use. People have noticed how dated and unloved this building is so they modernism it in something useful and brought the building back to life. Greenery is a good way of showing the modern day art in building because not only is it helping with the environment it makes the building more appealing and art like which is what this day and age look for.

This image is exactly how I picture a city in flux. The rush and lack of timing in this busy city photo is a great example of how people work. Everything is a rush and no-one has time for anyone anymore.

Transport is an amazing new addition to the modern world. From Cars, buses, trains, trams and airplane there are many new ways of getting about. Some of which haven’t been around for all that long. Back in the Victorian day to get about or transfer goods they would use a horse and carriage.

This image is a good way of showing the change in building styles from the Victorian builds to the modern day extensions.

A statue is a great and artistic way of keeping the history of a place alive.

Even the colour in buildings is something that has changed dramatically over time.

Street art, commonly known as graffiti, is a good way of advertising, whether is be personal or business like, and in a way has alway been used, but now it’s abused.

Topics and ideas FASHION

BUILDINGS

MUSIC

For one of my ideas I had thought about looking at fashion over time, perhaps making a time line of how fashion, and clothes have changed, within this I could also include make up and different hair styles as over time we have experienced some weird and wonderful styles. I thought this would shows change, or, a city in flux because not only is it the clothes we wear that change but also how it changed our personalities and attitudes, for example when our fashion changed the way we were persieved in the new, and our actions changed, even the way we posed for a photo changed.

I wanted to look in buildings because so much around the buildings have changed, over time the style of buildings have become more advanced, to put up with climate change and various other things. There is even a TV show called amazing spaces because people can now and have developed to make buildings fascinating buildings in places that are unimaginable. Also not only is it the building styles that may have changed but maybe the use for the buildings and even the surroundings, maybe more things have built and there will have been roads added, and different types of transport, which again have constantly been changing.

Music is something which is continuously changing, there only used to be one sort of music when it first came around, and now there are many genres, such as Indie Rock, Rock, Pop, R&B, classical, and many more. I think I would personally find it difficult to show the change through time in music, I think I would have to make a short film, as if it is moving through time and trying to line the music up with similar beats as each time period passes.

Buildings of Huddersfield THE TOWN HALL

The Town Hall was designed by a gentleman named John H Abbey. The town hall was built in two stages, the first stage begun in 1875 and finished in 1876. The second stage started in 1878 and was completed in 1881. The building has a Classic Italian appearance, which is indicated by the rounded heads to the windows, the symmetrical design and the “rustication” of the stonework on the base of the building.

THE MARKET HALL. There are two entrances which lead from the Piazza into the market where there are all kinds of shops that can be found. The white tent like structure is a recent addition to the scene, which would work really well when showing the change between then and now. The Market Hall was built in the 1960’s, with features such as bespoke roof system of 21 asymmetric curved shells, this design allows light into the market and is considered to be the best example still standing of a retail market. The exterior of the building incorporates natural stone with exposed concrete and several art relief panels all individually sculpted by the artist Fritz Steller.

THE RAILWAY STATION AND ST GEORGE’S SQUARE. The station was built between 1846-1850. The front of the building is overwhelmed by the structer of the roof and it’s support of eight columns. The Corinthian ornamentation then continous onto the main body of the building at the top of the pilasters. The refurbishment of St George’s Square won Kirklees Council a prestigious Europa Nostra Award. A statue of Huddersfield born former Prime Minister Harold Wilson now overlooks the square.

THE GEORGE HOTEL Directly across from the Train station is The George Hotel, the original and traditional station hotel was designed by William Wallen and Charles Child, built similar to an Italian “Palazzo”. It is the birth place of Rugby League which was founded in 1895. A commemorative display can be seen inside.

RAMSDEN BUILDING. The building was originally built as a technical school and was designed by Edward Hughes and fortunately it now forms part of the University of Huddersfield. The Ramsden has a Gothic character to the building with it’s steep roof and pointy arches. Also close to the building there are town houses constructed in the 1830s which again will show how a town was built up when I’m showing the change in surrounds.

LIONS BUILDINGS Crowned by an appropriate statue of a Lion, this building is another that has been designed by Pritchett. Constructed by Samuel Oldfield it provided an arcade of shops, offices and storage for the wool manufacturers.

My location & Travel After researching a little bit more into my town/cities I decided I wanted focus on historical buildings from then and now. Once I started looking into this I realised that not only may had the buildings had modifications added but also the surrounding area and people have ‘modified’ with the times. When decided which building I wanted to be my focus point I thought about many different aspects. Eventually I went with the Train station in Huddersfield. I picked this mainly for it’s surroundings rather than the building. Around the station there are many different things that have improved and developed over time. One been the people, the train station is busy and has many different types of ‘modern’ people come from and too the station, for example there are students, business men/women, Mums, Dads and many other people. All these people have different personality’s, different styles and sometimes bizarre fashion, which is completely different from around the middle of 18th hundreds which is the time period I will be looking into. Another thing that will differs from the 18th hundreds and now is transport. Around the train station, not only will there be modern trains, there are other types of transport, such as cars and buses. Just from one image I can show the development from then and how people have improved certain ways of living. I have found some images of Huddersfield train station and taken an image of the station now and you can see most of the developments While taking images of the train station I also realised that by using a modern Cannon Camera I can also point out the improvement of camera’s and there quality of final images. I believe by using this for my project I can get a strong point across of how technology, people and transport of all kinds have developed.

Rebecca Mcmillian My Impressions

I instantly fell in love with Rebecca Mcmillians style of art, I find this illustrator and watercolour artist really interesting, she also makes something look so easy when realistically it’s hard to do, to create something so elegant looking and not looking like a child’s painting.

Rebecca Mcmillian Mcmillian has taken her art one step further and now sells her work. In 2012 Mcmillian set up ‘Rebecca Mcmillian illustration’ selling wedding stationery and greeting cards designed using her hand painted water colour and ink illustrations. Mcmillian now sells her art on notonthehighstreet.com and her work also appeared in Vogue magazine during October 2014 to recgonise her unique, quirky and original range of work. She was born in the British country and has now taken the opportunity to travel around the world, where she can gather new inspiration for her work. Digital image. Liz Orton

My impressions.

Liz Orton has inspired me because she is very unique, I found her work Different and challenging, not only with photography but with perception Of how things look. Sometimes Bizarre. I found her work stunning and extremely eye catching. I think Orton puts A really big twist on her work by introducing different types of design.

For example some of my favorite work in a collage of the same place But from different time periods, mashed together to show the change in History to present.

Liz Orton Liz Orton is an English photographer who wishes for different outcomes of her work compared to other photographers. Orton is constantly looking for new and brilliant ideas from around the globe. Orton also finds a way of getting her work to help others and interest others in helping the people in need.

Orton often works with historical documents and objects. I found This really helped me with my inspirations for work when I began My research. I believe taking a historical route for my city in flux Research would give me a huge twist on my work and help widen My range of ideas.

Liz Orton is a photographer who also has an interesting background with social research. The reason why I find Orton so fascinating is because she doesn’t only enjoy what she does, but she is always looking for new challenges and projects to take on board. However Liz Orton is mostly interested in “photography’s relationship to change, both theoretically and in practice.”

These are a few of Liz Orton’s work where she has incorporated historical documents, but mingled them with the current settings. I think this is an amazing way to show exactly how times have changed. I also love these pieces of work because you can see the different between cameras now a days and the cameras that where used when they first were invented.

Michelle Claesson Eismann My Impressions

My first impressions of Michelle Claeson Eismann is how interesting and alien like her work is. It is so striking and odd but with a sense of humor and I really enjoy that about her work, it speaks to different people, giving her such a wide audience to work with. The way Eismann has molded together parts of different people, different styles, different colours, and even different animals all together yet she still manages to make

her work look appealing and attractive for the viewer. I do think that Eismann’s work might be a bit too striking and loud for the outcome I am looking for but I do think it would speak to a lot of people and grab their attention straight away if I were to look into something similar to Eismann’s work.

Robert Doisneau My Impressions

When I found Robert Doisneau work on Pinterest, originally, I was instantly taken in by his work. It is fun and educational, for some. I like that Doisneau’s work is very much in the ‘now’, and that Roberts tries many different types of photos, some are set up and posed whereas others aren’t set up or posed. However they’re all personal and can relate to everyone.

La Transhumance. Digital image. Http://www.robert-doisneau.com/. Robert Doisneau, n.d. Web

I also like that Robert has focused more on our everyday lives, people working and been busy, even having fun and the general chat.

Robert Doisneau Robert Doisneau, born in Paris 1922 was just fifteen when he began engraving and lithography with this he started designing labels for drug packaging.

Unfortunately for Robert Doisneau world war 2 broke out and that swiftly put an end to his photography career. Although he began small jobs to have a living Doisneau still hoarded his photos, that later on in life would be the start of his success.

Doisneau started his photography career off by been a camera assistance at AndrÊ Vigneau’s studio in 1931. This is where he got his inspiration from and with that his artist outlook lifted off.

When Doisneau died in April 1994 he left behind 450,000 negatives which would tell a interesting and entertaining story of his life with his observant eye.

Bobby Neal Adams My impressions

When I first came across Adam’s work I was really interested by the way he re-designed the family tree, it isn’t the traditional take on a family tree, Shows the change and development in a person from their youth to when they’re elderly, and to be able to see that change in a person really brings his art work to life. I found his work really smart and inquisitive.

I have never before seen work like Bobby Neal’s - I also find some of his images to be a little daring. They’re definitely over stopping the mark and some may see them as disturbing. But Bobby Neal Adams is definitely one of a kind and his work is like no other.

Not only will Bobby Neal Adams mingle the faces of the same person in differetn periods of their life, but he also mingles couples together and he makes them look as if they’re just one person. I believe that Bobby Neal Adams has a very smart eye and this really helps him when it comes too editing his photographs.

Bobby Neal Adams For the first eighteen years of Adam’s life it was pretty normal, like any other eighteen year old. It wasn’t until 1980’s when Bobby Neal Adams started his project ‘Family Tree’ of stitching two images of two family members together, ie. Farther and Son, Mother and Daughter etc. Bobby Neal Adam’s named this ‘Photo-Surgery’. Adam’s then tuck his ‘Photo-Surgery’ further into other projects, such as Couples and Agemap. Photo-Surgery is basically manipulating two photos by collage and defacing the subject.

Agemaps. Digital image. Http://www.bobbyneeladams.com/age.html. N.p., n.d. Web

Some of Adam’s most recent work is photographing airplanes when they’re close tot he ground. Unfortunately for him he once got arrested for this on his birthday. “Adam remains a dinosaur by creating all his projects on film and remaining free and clear of the bells and whistles of Photoshop” - A statement from his Biography. I found this really interesting to find out that Adam doesn’t use Photoshop as his work has no imperfections when it comes to editing them.

Liz Orton & Robert Doisneau I decided to look further into Liz Orton and Robert Doisneau’s work because I found both equally fascinating, but in their own ways.

When I found Robert Doisneau, originally on Pinterest. Doisneau work stood out to me and it was his work that set the base for my idea generation, I came across the image where a girl was holding up a historical photograph in the same place as the original photo. I found this to be a really good way show the difference between then and now, not only in building styles, or even fashion and peoples attitude, but with transport and travel. I wanted to focus on transport and travel because that was, and still is, a huge part in history when cars, and other parts of travel were invented and open to the public. Liz Orton, another artist I found on pinterest, I found her work to be one of a kind, I had never seen anything like her work before, I instantly fell in love with how innocent her work is. I also really like the way she has incorporated collage into her work, this again is another really interesting turn for me on my project, it shows the difference between ‘now and then’ really well.

For both artists what stood out to me the most is the way the photos are presented, and possibly edited. I really love the black and white photos from Robert Doisneau, although I don’t think they will work as well for my ideas, if I were to edit my photo black and white I believe this wont show the improvement in out technology as we can now get coloured photos, perhaps having the historical photo in black and white and the current photo in colour will show the change in time in more detail and in more ways. The same goes for Liz Orton, I think the way she edited her photo’s is really smart. She tuck the base colour from old photo and used that in her current photo, to help blend the two together, and the end result did come out really well and put an unexpected turn on her work, but once again I think having the colour photo with barely any edit it will help me show the change more visually.

Idea Generation View finder.

To start my edit I simply used the curve tool in Photoshop and basically lifted the brightness. I did this because I found that it made the image, and the print on the ticket a lot more clearer, and therefore was slightly easier to mold and edit with different colours and tools.

Once I had my image to brightness that I wanted, I then went into properties and started editing with the Exposure, Offset and Gamma correction. I was going to edit this image further, but I already really liked this outcome.

I used the Exposure because that added the texture to the image and also brightened it to the extreme, and turned all the colours off, and the orange strip a very bright yellow.

The yellow is why I then added the Offset too about -0.1639, which then brought a bit more of the original orange colour back to ticket

Then finally I upped the Gamma correction which made the colours slightly more clear and bright, which gave me the final look, which also resembles pop art.

I really like my outcome on this image because I like the printed aspect that I finished with. Although the tickets are printed anyway I think this edit gives it a bit more of a vintage look, and I think that is something that would work well for photography as I want to include the colour but I don’t want to keep the image too basic either without edits.

I started this edit exactly the same as the other, I brightened the image using the curve tool, and then using similar tips to Liz Orton edits and used the base colour of the original image, which would be this tint of orange from the tickets and used that as an over lay by using the channel mixer and I simply upped the red colour too about +166 which really helped bring out the orange look from the ticket.

Originally when I was looking through Liz Ortons work I wasn’t very keen on including the way she edited her photos with my works because I didn’t want the images to look too a like as I wanted to show the improvement and development with cameras and photography, but after editing this image with a similar style I really like it and I think it is also fun and eye catching.

I came across this edit by accident. I started it by brightening the image again, and then by experimental mistake I clicked on new invert adjustment layer, and it gave me this dark blue layer over my image and I thought it looked really interesting.

This edit reminds me of a screen, or something machine used, and I thought it looked really good and unique. And also something current, therefore showing the change between then and now as it is more futuristic.

I find this edit really interesting. I basically started with the original image of the train ticket and I moved the Hue tool bar to the far end which gave me a blue colour on the colour, I then went on and experimented with the rest of the colours, I did this by moving the down the tool bar in small sections. I’m really please with the out come and I think there is so much more experiments I could take on with these edits. Referring back to Liz Ortons work, I really like the way she had made college out of a photo. I think works really well and defiantly grabs the attention of the audience, I also think this work would be eye catching because it is so bright and has many different colour shades applied to just one image.

Location Photography

I decided for one of my locations I wanted to focus on the train station as it is a main part of Huddersfield center. It is where a lot of people entering Huddersfield and leave Huddersfield, it is a place of commutation and 2 but also business and is a place full of rush - Which is also a modern persons attitude of how to be when walking around a city.

I looked at the McDonalds building from the 1930’s and noticed a few differences that I wanted to get across, again mainly to dow with peoples attitudes, one this image you can see a lot of people alone, even though McDonalds if a place for groups to socialise and eat together, but on the old photo, this building is a large shop and there are large groups of people enjoying their time together.

The Lions building. I find this building facinating, which why I wanted to include it into the building into my project. Not only is the building a big part in history it also holds a lot of interesting facts. For example the Lion on top is made of plastic, because it is a material that last long enough through pollution and wont rott in the harsh british weather.

The shops are a big part in many peoples lives. Not only is place pretty much the same, which is a good thing because I also wanted to show that not everything changes completely. This place is where people go for luxeries, it is also a place for meeting friends and families, where memeories can be made, and I want that feeling to show through in my images.

Idea One - Split screen

With this idea I wanted to show how things might have changed over time. My idea was to take a current photo and research into an old photo of main buildings in Huddersfield. My initial thoughts were if I split the image down the center I could line both images up and merge them together, similar to things that Bobby Neal Adams had created. I think I would achieve this outcome by using Photoshop to merge the two images together and also to line them.

Idea One - Split screen With this idea I wanted to show the difference between then and now in 2 halves, I think this idea does work, but possibly not to it’s full protenional. For instants, the other half of both photos, which are not shown within this experiment hold more evidence of a change over time. However, at the same time this edit shows plenty of change, the transport the street lights, an even the building has slight tweeks but I still think I could include more of of the picture and point out more of changes. I do like this edit, I think it really brings the past to life and points out things that we might not have ever thought used to be there, such as the street lights on the older photo, they’re really different from the current ones, yet they serve the same perpouse, this is showing the improvement and development, because even though the lights on the photos may not be lit, it is showing that they have evolved with the time, by making them more effective, making them slimmer, taller, but brighter, not only is the street lights evolving but so much more around us, from fashion and attitudes, which I don’t think comes across well in this edit.

Idea Two - Ghost town

With this idea I had a slight sense of ‘Ghost Town’ by cutting out parts of an old image I think I could add them to the current setting to show where and things have changed. This idea would fun and the outcome would really different from any other I could produce. I would again make this image via photoshop, as I think I could cut out the old images with a clear line and I could fade them in so they look like ‘ghost’

I begun this edit by using the magic wand tool and selecting all the light areas arounds the horse and carriage, this deleted all the ground around the horse and carriage making it easier to see where I need to remove the background now. Then using the rubber I quickly removed most of the background. To get rid of the closer areas around the horse and carriage I could use the lasso tool. I then was left with the horse and carriage with hardly any background. I repeated this with the rest of the images I wanted to keep.

Idea Two - Ghost town

I was pleased with my out come for this ‘Ghost town’ effect, I think it really shoes the change in times and it also gives off a creepy ghostly vibe which I find fun and appealing, but not everyone is a fan of the after life therefore might not fine this work appealing. I think this shows loads of different aspects of Huddersfield and how times have changes, right down the the clothes they’re wearing. I think could have a better photo, maybe at a busier time to show the rush and a bit more of a change in peoples attitudes.

Idea Three - Time travel With this initial idea I had inspiration from Liz orton, Deltiologies, but instead of creating mine into a circle I wanted to keep mine landscape like both of the original photos. The idea of this idea is to show the difference, I think this is a good idea because it shows the difference of both sides of the photos, and not just one half, but it also shows the diffferences close together.

For this idea I basically got both my photos, and using the rulers I measured the size of each strip that I needed so that the image would be equal. I then copy and pasted the select strip from on photo and pasted onto a new document, I then did the same to the other image, but for the next strip along, so that the image still continues, I continued this pattern until I had a whole photo again, of then and now images merged together.

Idea Three - Time travel

I was really happy and impressed with this open, it covers all sort of points that I wanted to make clear, it shows the difference in the building, the area, the clothes, the attidueds of people, the transport, the lights, and so much more. This edit will also appeal to my wide audience, it isn’t too bizzarse that people don’t understand and it’s subtle enough to see whats going on and to point out the differences. What I also like about this edit is that I can play around with it and make different edits with a similar take on this one. For example I can edit a photo horizontal, or on an angle and really bring this edits to life.

Booklets

There are many different types and makes of booklets, some are your traditional A5, very blank and full of writing information booklet, but others have been made fun and eye catching towards it’s audience. I really like this booklet, I think they have though really well about the way they have spelt HOPE throughout the booklet, and i definitely stands out, what else I like about this booklet is that they have looked at the colour closely and careful, which ended in them using the colour green, because this is a positive, encouraging and trusting colour and this is obviously the feeling they want their audience to feel when reading Hope. I also think the layout and how little they have used text is also a good way of inviting people in to your booklet.

I have noticed when looking at many different booklets and there front covers have a lot of blank spaces, very minimum text and a lot use basic shapes, such as this booklet with multicoloured lights down one side. The reason being for this is so that people will at the booklet, that stands out enough with just the coloured shapes, and they will notice straight away what the booklet is about by looking at the title, if you over power your booklet on front cover with multiple images and loads of information and text, it will also most be like shoving the booklet into peoples faces and they will instantly become uninterested because too much will be going off at once. A subtle, straight to the point cover will grab our audience faster.

As said previously, a lot of blank spaces on the front cover of the booklet will show the audience that the booklet is straight to the point, which is what I want my booklet to be, as it mostly about the photographs, but there will be small bits of information included and I want people to get that instinct straight away that there isn’t much, but theres plenty of information inside the booklet. Using extremely bright colour on the front cover, is a good way of helping the booklet stand out from the rest there still isn’t a lot going off at once with loads of pictures or text.

Booklet Printing - www.blurb.co.uk/ As I’m wanting to bring a booklet I decided to look into websites that could print my booklet out for me at professional standers, I looked in to reviews for each website and there cost to see which printers looked more promising and could bring my booklet to life.

The first website I looked was http://www. blurb.co.uk/ I had been told about this site before and I know people who have used it to print their own booklets/books and some have been please with their outcomes. When I first went onto the sight I hovered over the create button, which gave me options to create any type of print document. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a booklet option so I went for the photo book, this then brought up a book size guide. I could then select the size booklet I wanted by clicking on the sizes at the sides. I decided to look further into the smallest options 18cmx18cm.

The website then went on to give me more options for creating my book, the first option was book types, I could only pick from three options, A photo book, a magazine and a Trade book, I optured for the photo book because I thought this would show my images off more clearly. The next option I pick between was the cover type, again I was given three options, Soft cover, image wrap and Dust cover. I decided on soft cover, I believe I will have wide audience with booklet, it can be used for people just into history, it can be used for educational purposes, so my age group can be anything from 13 - 50+ and I think a soft cover for my booklet would attracted most of this age group.

The website continued to give me more options, the next one was paper type. I had think hard about this type because I wanted a paper type that would show off my imagines in excellent quality, but also one that presented my text well too which is why I went for the standard photo paper, it has a slight gloss over the images to give that extra quality lift, yet not too much gloss over the text, it’s subtle middle grounds for bother my text and images. The final option was if I wanted too include the blured logo or not onto my booklet, the only problem with this is that they charged extra for a print without their logo. I am yet undecided on if I like this.

Unfortunately when I got to the final option before actually creating my book was the amount of pages I will be needing. My booklet is pretty small, including front and back cover I only need 10 pages, and the minimum amount for Blurb, com was 20. But it was a good website and was actually pretty cheap, it was £8.99 for 1-9 copies of your 20 page book before delivery price might have been added.

Booklet Printing - www.print-my-own-book When first entering the website there is a small video to watch, which is someone basically walking you through the website and explaining what you need to do etc.. This is a good way of getting the customer to trust the website because they know what everything is for/will do.

Further down the page it gives you different options of printed books, a bit like blurb did, you get the option of document printing and binding, Hardback book printing, paper back printing, self-publishing service, training manual printing and finally Date printing.

Another thing that I really like about the website is that it’s advertise for customers to get an instant quote, this is very convenient for people like me shopping around trying to find the cheapest price for good quality products.

I started looking into getting an instant quote cause this would be extremely helping me, I would be able to starting planning ahead and sort when it needs to be sent off for printing and back in time for deadlines.

When you first start off looking for your quote it asks for you to decided on a paper size, I would like mine to be A5 as I think this would be a really convenient size for my audience. Once I have chose my paper size, it then ask for number of books, I chose the option 1-49. When I filled in all my details, name, email etc I then had to pick the number of pages, unfortunately the minimum amount for this website is 30, But I did get a quote of £59.99. I don’t really want this amount of money for a lot of extra pages and booklets I will not be using.

Booklet Printing - www.printed.com As soon as you open the website, there is a big pink button saying start now, I clicked on that and it instantly gives you options of what to print, unfortunately there wasn’t really any books apart from saddle stitched brochures all the others things such as wedding invites, leaflets and posters. However I still looked into the brochure printing because I thought this might actually be a good idea for presenting my work. After selecting the brochures the next page says ‘Perfect for documents with 8-40 pages’ which is the perfect amount of pages I will be needing, I will either be creating a document of 8 pages or 18 pages depending on my layout.

I continued to look through the website as this had looked the most promising so far, I begun the process by chosen a document page size, I decided on A5 and then I could decide on quantity and amount of pages, I decided one 1 order for a brochure of 18 pages. Then a problem occurred and said I could only use multiples of 4 for the page amount, which meant I could either have 8 or lower the amount of images and have 16, I was unsure which I wanted, but just for the quote I went with 16. I could then decided the finishing touches such as gloss covers etc, I enter all the options I wanted and I was given the quote of £20.79 and then an added delivery charge of £4, which is probably one of the best prices for the quality of the book I have found so far, this is including a gloss finish and silk pages,

Booklet Printing - www.bookprintinguk.co.uk Just like a few of the other websites you can get an instant quote by filling in some details about the print you are wanting to make. I just went for similar options as before, landscape, A5 booklet, but yet again I couldn’t have 18 pages, it was between 8, 16 and 20, this time I decided to go for 20 because I really wanted to include all the photos and images I had found/created and had ideas for. Another thing I really liked about this website is that once you had uploaded your files/ document they gave you the options of having a PDF send to your email as a proof read, to see what your document would look like when printed.

I found that been able to receive this proof read I felt as if I could trust this website and I was really happy with the how the website and company was helping me through steps by explain what everything is, they even recommended paper weights. And then unfortunately at the last hurdle I got the quote back for ÂŁ38.55 This was a bit out of my budget and a little bit pricey, but I was really pleased with the rest of the website and how it walked me through each step.

Booklet Printing After researching into different book printing websites I have decided to use www.printed.com. Not only was this the cheapest price for about ÂŁ20 but also I found the website really trust worthy and I had see many reviews on the websites that had statue how good quality their books had turned out and that the website was really simple to use, which agree with, they helped you through step by step and give more than enough options to choose from.

Booklet Layout - Front Cover Image

Sub Header Image

Sub Header

Image / Background I find this layout initial idea boring, I think the image would look too small and will be over powered by the text/title. I think for my front cover to do well, the text and images bother need to have an equal part of stand out to my customers/audience.

TITLE

Image

Sub header

Image

With this layout I worry that there might be too much information all at once, with having an image as the background might not appeal to everyone and it might also drowned out the title/ text and then my audience might not understand what the book is prepresenting straight away.

TITLE Subheader

Image

I really like this idea of having the images overlap eacg other and having the text and title surround them, however I think having the images in the center of the pages doesn’t work very well, I think it makes the images look too small, I think that having 4 images might be one too much.

Image

Image

Image

TITLE Subheader

Image I think this layout is really quriky and will grabs my audience attention with having too much going off on the front cover a large title font and the smaller sub header will draw them in even more. This cover also includes what I found out during my booklet cover research, it isn’t over crowded and has plenty of blank space so that my audience wont be scared off by there been too much information at first glance

Image

I think this front cover would appear slightly boring, Although I had stated that blank space on some occasiance is good, and will help draw the audience in, I think also having too much blank space, and too little information on the covers can also push people away as the cover will look like there isn’t much going off. I need to find a balacne of information and blank space for my cover.

Because I found that I needed to find a balance between blank space and information/images for my front cover, I decided to do a simpler layout to my previous one. I think this layout does work better, and is more balanced than the previous one, but I think I could do something a bit more fun and quirky as I find the city quirky, so I think that will help tie thm together well.

Booklet Layout - Photo pages

TEXT

TEXT

TEXT I think having the image as the first thing you will see on the page is a good idea for my photo layouts. I think that will invite people into my booklet even more so because they will instantly be attracted to my work and want to find out more information which will then lead them to the text.

Because I thought the previous Layout worked well I wanted to see how it worked visversa. Unfortunately I don’t think this layout flows as well as the first one, I think having the information/text first if a bit off putting for some viewers, I also liked the other one because having the image first made it feel like you wanted to find out more about the image, whereas this is just throwing the information at your straight away without any ‘evidence’

TEXT

As I found out with the other lay outs that they seemed too cramped all on one page and the certain layouts didn’t work well, i decided to look at a double page spread layout and I think this really works. I find it inviting for the audience and everything on the page is clear.

I think this layout works similar to the first one, it flows well with the image been first nd the text scond, but I feel like all this on one page, laid out like this looks really cramped up and uninviting, I think the page needs to be spread out more for my audience to appreciate the images and the information provivded.

TEXT

Because I really liked the previous layout I thought I would look at the pages the other way, image first and then text because I had noted on a previous layout that having the text first wasn’t something that I like because it felt like all the information was been throw at your because you saw the ‘evidance’ But I actually think on the double page spread layouts the text first works better because it isn’t as cramped up to the image like on the other layouts.

Booklet Layout - Back Cover text / Credit

text/Credit

For the back cover I wanted to keep it simple, I think having an image, maybe of Huddersfield at it’s current state would help tigh the book together well.

text/credit Even though I want an image on the back cover I don’t think having the text at the top of the page works well, it doesn’t flow as well as I think the first one does with the text underneath the image, I also think leaving the booklet on the “Credit” is a nice way to end the booklet.

text / Credit

Because I wanted to keep keep the layout simple I thought I would try and see how the layout would work without an image, but I think it’s too simple and it looks really boring.

Although I thought the first layout looked nice and flowed well with the text underneath the image, I think having the text off to one side does not work well at all, I think it looks messy and out of place.

Century Gothic 18pt

Code Ligth 18pt

I like this font, but i’m not sure if it works well for my booklet, it’s a bit too fancy and it wont appeal to everyone, for example it’s more of a girly font, so although it will appeal to women, maybe it don’t appeal to men as much.

I think this font works really well for my booklet, not other will it appeal to all my audience, men, woment, children, students, it also fits in well with my theme as I go through different periods in time and some of the older photos look very gothic. I also like that this font has no serifs it’s clean and clear which is what I want.

I don’t like this font at all, I also don’t think it works well for my booklet, the letters are too close together, which might make it difficult for some of my audience to read. I don’t think it fits in as well as some other fonts with the theme of my book either.

One of the main reasons I didn’t like the Code Bold was because it was bold and close together, so I thought at would look at the other similar font coe light, which I still don’t like, I think it might fit in more with my theme but the text is still too close together, and still hard to read. I also don’t like that that there isn’t a lower case type face it’s always in capitals and I don’t want that throughout my booklet.

American Typwriter 12pt

American Typwriter 14pt

American Typwriter 18pt

I do like this font but i’m not convinced it works well for my booklet, I’m not really keen on the serifs wth this font either, some of letters are clear, but I think the serifs make it looks messy and the letters look close together, which is something I want to aviod, I want my type face to be as clear as possible. Century 12pt

Century 14pt

Century 18pt

Because I liked the Century Gothic font so much I thought I would look at a couple of the other ‘Century’ fonts to see the differnces. I do like this font, and I also like the serifs aswell because I think they’re very subtle yet they add character to the type and therefore will bring character to my booklet

Booklet - Colour Theory

I wanted to keep my colour theme pretty nutral and natural colours because I wont be having the colours as a big part of the booklet as it is mostly about the images. I went on a website called ‘The Colour Scheme Designer’ which helps you pick out colours best suited for each other, I knew that I wanted a colour a bit like the reddish colour as I think it would fit perfect with my theme, I think this colour represents age, as it is a bit rusty and because my photos are from different time periods I think this colour works really well. I also like this colour with the blue and greens, I think they work really well together, and because blue is the colour of water, green the colour grass/earth I think that will also add a bit of nature and will again fit in with my theme really well as this will show growth as we helped the earth developed and improved out water. I’m really happy with these colours, I think they’re going to bring my booklet to life, and hopfully will help it stand out form many other booklets.

However, I may be happy with these colours for my outcome as they do their job to stand out and apply to all my age group and different both female and male, I’m not really keen on the brown because I think it adds a certain dullness to my booklet and that is something I want to aviod, my audience might seen the dull colour and instantly loose interest. All the other colours are bright and represent parts that I believe you will find throughout my booklet, parts such as gardens and greenery that may have been demolished, or even added over the years, water, from rivers, water features, that also may have been added, or taken over, these are the types of thing that I want my colour to represent as a lot of the inside of the booklet is black and white, from the older photographs.

Photo Development - Train Station

I started the photograph development by taking strips from both images, I simple did this by placing them on separate pages on photoshop and using the selection tool to copy and paste the selected strip, I also used this rulers on the images to help me keep most of the strips equal. Once I did this I could them paste the selected strip onto a new page document, also in photoshop.

Once I pasted a couple of strips into the new document on photoshop I could then try and line both the images up as close as I could giving the off the illusion that it is one image, but also showing the difference in time between the 1930’s - 2014.

I’m really pleased with my outcome for this edit, I think it shows the difference in time perfectly and points out how certain things have evolved, developed and improved over time alone with us. My favourite part of this image is the horse and carriage and then car in the distance, that is showing a huge jump in our development with our technology. I think I could have made some of the strips a bit more even but at the same time, I also think that having the strips slightly different sizes gives my finished produced a bit of character and it makes it a bit different from other art work. I would deffinately say that this finished outcome is inspiered a lot by Liz Orton, I really liked her work with Deltiologies. I found them really elegant and they instantly grabbed my attention cause they were so different and I hadn’t really seen much work like that before.

Photo Development - McDonalds Building

For the next image I went through the same process, selecting certain parts of the image and copying and pasting them onto a new document. For this image I thought I would experiment a bit further and and try and look at my images from different angles and see how they looked. However once I finished with this experiment I decided that I didn’t really like it and and I also don’t think it showed the changes as well, so I continued my experiments with how I started on my previous edits.

I do perfer this experiment, I think it shows the changes really well between now and then, For example without seeing these images so closely together I would not noticed that the top of the building, next to the ‘McDonalds’ building had completely changed on top. I’m very pleased with how my final pieces are coming together now, I think they’re putting across the message I wanted to show from the very beggining, which is how we improve things around us, to help improve and development ourselves. The only thing I wish I could of done differently for this images was to possibly have taken the images at an earlier time, but I also think that if I had of done that it wouldn’t show the development in electricity, for example how the M for McDonalds is lit up, and even more so how the building its lit up.

Photo Development - Lions Building

I was really happy with the way this image turned out, although you can’t see much of the changes, it is also nice to see the building standing pretty much exactly how it stood all those years ago. Certain things surrounding the building are probably what is showing the biggest change. The most obvious is probably transport again between cars and the horses but the other big change I believe are the shops underneath the lions building, this is a new development as I don’t think this building used to be for shops, or much of the public for that matter. I think the final main development would probably be the use of electricity again, the shops, the building and street lights make a big difference between the two images as I can’t se much electrity, if any used in the older photograph.

Photo Development - Train Station I think this edit is probably one of my favourites, I find it quirky and so much has changed. The trains are probably the biggest improvement in every way, the way they look, run and even how they effect the environment. I found this edit slgithly harder than the others because I had try and line up the train tracks the best I could when pasting the selected part of the image into my new document, this edit probably involced a lot more cropping and resizing of the images (Without stretching them) but I think at the end it showed a good resembalence between now and then, because even though a huge part of the images has change termendusly, the majority of it stays similar.

Photo Development - Lions Building I think this edit turned out to be one of the best because so little has changed and it lines up perfectly, with hardly any cropping down on any of the photographs. Once again one of the biggest changes again would probably be the cars, even though both periods of time have cars, the difference is what kind of cars and how they run, although you wouldn’t be able to exactly tell how cars run in the image but you can see that they images in shape, and this is showing the that engien size is smaller and more efficiant for the current times.

Photo Development - Shops

This edit was sort of difficult to put together and you couldn’t really tell where some of the shops started and finished because on the currently photo there has been developemtns such as the glass/plastic covering over the walk way and the huge concret structure, to help hold up any added developements. However I do really like this image because I like how the old photo fits well with the people walking about the look like they should be there and you can see where people once walked around with their own shopping. I think this image eneded up been really sweet and I also believe that this will be the image to stand out to a lot of people, probably mainly from Huddersfield as they will have many memories here.

Name Generation For the name generation I looked at words that I think describe the place, Huddersfield, as well as street names, building and other things that stand out in the city. For this I also used words from my Key words that was a massive help when looking into my name generation for my booklet.

Name Generation Developing Huddersfield

St George Square

Little book of Huddersfield

Changed times

I like this name for my booklet, I think it is straight to the point and everyone will get what type of book mine is, I think this title advertises itself well and will grab all sorts of peoples attention, which is what I want because my audience is so wide. This title shows the audiacne where this booklet is about, Huddersfield, making it easy for the audience to decide if that is what they’re looking for or not, and because it says ‘developing’ it is telling the audience that it showing change and will show this has improved over time from many different factors and points through history, which is what im really looking for. The only down fall to this title, I find, is that is simsple, which I worry too simple and it can come across slgithly boring towards some people, maybe my younger audience, but it can still apply young people at the same time.

I find this title might not work very well fo my booklet, mainly because it doesn’t show that St George Square is in Huddersfield, there will be many St George squares around the world, so I believe this title isn’t clear enough. I also think this title might be missleading because not all the buildings and places featured in my book are from, or around St george Sq.

Although this title might be describing exactly what my book is. a little book of Huddersfield, I do think that that title would appeal more to younger kids, even kids that are slightly under my audience rating, because it sounds childish and although it tells you it’s about Huddersfield it doesn’t actually say what it is about Huddersfield, which again like the previous title could be missleading for some audiances. I do think it’s a sweet and funny title and it could appeal to some older people but I personally wouldn’t bother looking at a book with this title because it doesn’t give enough information about the actual book.

I like this title, because it say telling the audience that it is book about change, and even through periods, it sounds like big changes through time and history, which is exactly what my book is and I also think it is appealing because it doesn’t give too much away but I think that is a slight problem for this title because it doesn’t tell you anything else apart from change and history, some of my audiacne might get confused when they open it and it’s just about Huddersfield, this title doesn’t give any hits that it’s about Huddersfield, this could give people the wrong impression as they could think it is about many place all over, which it isn’t. I think my title needs about information in it, but also straight to the point like this one.

Booklet Development - Front Cover

I started off my developement for my front cover by placing three different sized circles onto my A5 page.

I then looked back at my style sheet for the colour codes in CMKY and applied them to the CMKY for photoshop, which gave me the exact same colours I used in my colour theory and on my style sheet.

Once I had all the cirlces I could then move them around my page until I was happy with the lay out. I wasn’t planning on keeping my front cover like this, as most of the green circle is covered up by the blue, I was actually wanting to mess around with the Opacity of the circles to add a bit of depth to my cover and I also think that my audience would find this fun and attractive so they will be taken by my design and it would grab their attention.

This is my design with the Opacity turned down to 50% on all of the circles, I already think that this design looks so much more eye catching than the original, I really like how all the colours leak through one another and expose new colours. I also find that this fits in well with my theme, as my booklet is showing all sorts of new developments showing through over time.

Opacity change of Red, Green and Blue for design two.

I felt like I could take my development with the opacity one step further. Because I liked the new colours leaking through when the circles were all on 50%, I decided to look at them all at different opacitys. I decided to look at them like the closer to the front, colour the lighter it got, or more faded out. Blue was 24%, Green 42% and Red 67%. I think that this adds even more depth to my cover, and the leaking colours change dramatically compared to the circles that only have 50% opacity, it’s more eye catching and I believe it links in more with all the mix of colours. The colours on this design are much bolder, without been dull, than the other design, therefore will help the booklet stand out from other booklets that maybe trying to over power more.

Booklet Development - Front Cover

I still really like my layout and the type face that I used, but I do think that the text doesn’t stand out enough, But I think that the font and the background work really well together and they are clear and clean, which makes it easy for the the audience to read.

Because I didn’t think that the previous text stood out enough on the page I looked at the title in a bold font, still Century Gothic. Although this is font might appeal to be more eye catching and stant out a little bit more I don’t think the font works as well with the design of the background as it does in a regular font. I also think that there is a bit too much space. I discovered in my research that booklet covers work better is there is a balanced amount of blank space to images/ text. I think on this cover there is more blank space than is needed, I think what this cover is missing is a sub heading.

I looked at this with the sub header to make up a bit more of the space, I think this works so well, and takes up a bit of the blank space, I’m still not keen on the bold for the titile, even though it stands out I don’t think it works well enough to be the main set of text on the image.

I switched the font round so the title was regular and the subheader was bold. This works so much better for my design, and having the subheader bold even helps the regular font stand out even more, which is what I was worried about from the beggining. The regular font not standing out from other booklets enough.

Booklet Development - Back Cover

I wanted to keep my back page simple, but I think having nothing on it apart from the background might be a little too simple and boring, although the back of the book wont be what is grabbing peoples attention, if I have nothing there it might look like there had been hardly any effect put into the rest of the book and this is not the impression I am wanting to give to my audience.

Because I had said I wanted my back ground to be simple, but not boring I thought I would just put my name on in Century Gothic in bold, this way my name will stand out and people will know who created the booklet, but I still think this back page is missing something as I still find it boring and effortless.

I much prefer this back page, more of the space has been used up and it doesn’t look as boring or too simple, yet it’s got enough there and doesn’t over power my audience at the same time. I also really like how I have used the bold font in my name, I think that helps it stand out and it also makes it slightly different from the front cover. This back page looks like it has much more effort involved and there projects well on the rest of the book.

Because I really liked the layout of the previous back page I thought I would look at moving something around, so I decided to move my name and I think it works well, it still stands out because of the bold font and its using more of the page and the blank space.
