Avenida Chapultepec is one of the most important historic avenues in the once calm Pre-Hispanic areas of Mexico City. The intent of the project is to give the busy ten lane highway back to the pedestrian. The proposal is sited on a 1.3km stretch of Chapultepec Ave. just south of La Reforma in Mexico City. The Proposal includes recycled rainwater systems, renewable energy and flora and fauna which will mitigate the heat island effect. It will also include a central promenade which provides lanes for bikes,
skaters, wheelchairs, and strollers. The architects see this avenue as an arterial from Chapultepec park and should serve as a reminder to the hardscape of the city of the connection to nature. The upper level will include space for retail which will help the developers to fund the project as well as become a vibrant cultural corridor. Since its conception, the Corredor Cultural Chapultepec has been placed on a hold.

“This way, Avenida Chapultepec will resume its rightful role as a laboratory for urban experimentation: it began as a road for the Aztec emperors, a path for the water used and drank by of the capital, the venue used by the American army, the circuit for the most modern and innovative vehicles, such as the first electric tram and the first subway -ArchDaily
Reminiscent of the Highline in New York, this project seems to replicate the use of a raised highway as public space. While it may not make too much sense to do so, as the infrastructure needed to create such a public space will be expensive, this project had many good intentions.
Before: Road is given to Vehicles
After: North side given to pedestrian as well as above vehicular path.
