AN INITIATIVE OF RED HOT ARTS CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
WELCOME Gary Higgins
Minister for Arts and Museums Alice Springs is the geographical and spiritual heart of the Territory and wider Australia and it has a very strong cultural beat. The Alice Desert Festival is one of Central Australia’s premier arts and cultural festivals celebrating the desert and its rich cultural landscape. This is the fifteenth year of the Alice Desert Festival and each year it has enlivened and transformed Alice Springs and provided exciting and varied ways
to celebrate the culture of Central Australia. From the parade down the Todd Mall to laughter in the Comedy Showcase to the Jazz Under the Stars concert, there will be something for everyone. I want to congratulate the staff at Red Hot Arts Central Australia for their work to bring this year’s Festival to fruition, and I encourage residents and visitors alike to get along and enjoy the Alice Desert Festival.
Damien Ryan
Mayor, Alice Springs Town Council Welcome to the Alice Desert Festival 2015! I am proud to say that the Alice Springs Town Council has been a strong supporter of the Festival for many years and continues to contribute significantly with support. The Festival is a great way to support the arts and celebrate Alice’s cultural
diversity. It also helps grow our fantastic local talent and attract visitors to our beautiful region. I’d like to acknowledge the Alice Desert Festival team, the sponsors and the many volunteers for their tireless efforts in putting on such a great show each year. See you at the Festival! 2

Chairperson Red Hot Arts Central Australia Welcome to the Alice Springs Desert Festival: a celebration and rite of connection with this wondrous place we inhabit, Mparntwe / Alice Springs. From ephemeral to enduring, we experience and create a sense of place through art and performance, respectful of the traditions that form and continue to shape
our understanding and mindful of the future we bring into being. Amidst a rich program: the Cosmic Joker will take audiences on an ecstatic journey; and with Incite Arts, we’ll visit an Unbroken Land. At the heart of the festival, the Tiki Bar will thrive with 8 nights of local music. You have to love Alice Springs!
Mary-Jane Reynolds Festival & Events Manager Red Hot Arts Central Australia Hey you, come here! That’s our message this year for Alice Desert Festival. Everyone is invited! At Red Hot Arts Central Australia we work year-round as a small and dedicated team, to ignite local artistic activity and bring together this amazing array of performances from our own Cental Desert Region and all across Australia for the festival season.
Alice Desert Festival is similar to the town - it’s broad, it’s diverse and it’s made up of many different cultures and points of view. Our intention is to create an arts festival that reflects and celebrates this place. Our wish is that you come and enjoy it. May it enrich your connection to Alice Springs and your own experience of what it is to be human, for that is the ultimate purpose of the Arts. 3

ANDY GRIFFITHS In partnership with the Wheeler Centre
If you’re a kid with an interest in zombie bums, not-very-merry merry-go-rounds, ninja snail training academies, gorillagrams or exploding butterflies, you already know who Andy Griffiths is. And if you don’t, here’s your chance to find out. Probably the most popular – and certainly the silliest – children’s author in Australia, Andy is best known for the Just series, the Treehouse books, the Bum series… and for causing you to convulse with laughter. Andy is also a passionate advocate for literacy
and a man whose mission is to make reading fun for even the most reluctant readers. What’s Andy been up to lately? He’s been building his treehouse, and this time it’s grown to a whopping 65 storeys! Bring your ice-cream serving robots and rocket-powered carrotlaunchers along for the ride as Andy Griffiths swings by to talk about The 65 Storey Treehouse, books… and bums. WORDS ON THE RUN
TIM TIM
Two ‘Alphabologists’ (self-appointed word scientists) offer 100+ giant, wooden letters on a ‘spelling field’; creating a space where the audience can interact with a series of stimulating word puzzles and games, and to express their creativity through free and frivolous letter play. Words on the Run is a connecting ground for sparking conversation, playfulness and literacy-based interaction between wordsmiths of all ages. Participation is open and fluid - and the wordplay can be enjoyed as an ‘on the field’ player, as a spectator or (as in most cases), both.
Keep your eyes peeled for Tim Tim and his giant bubbles as he makes his way around the festival on his stilts leaving a trail of joy and laughter behind him. Balloons, bubbles and a roving performance is just the tip of the iceberg for this amazing artist who will be poping up across the week long festival.
