ABOUT ME Since my growth from childhood into adulthood, creation was always in my nature. Whether it was constructing an elorabate lego configuration, sculpting clay into objects, or designing custom logos; I was always creating. As I began to develop into an adult, my future was shaped by one specific experience. At the age of sixteen I was involved in a life threatening car accident. This tragedy sent my body into a coma for two weeks and placed me in the hospital for over two months. The beginning of my stay was the hardest, I felt incapable and at a loss of hope. As I contemplated my experiences and interactions, I knew I had to stay positive and stay driven. In these moments I took great appreciation for the skills I possessed between the mind and the hand. The act of creation turned into a great coping mechanism and eventually lead me to the path of architecture after my recovery.

IN BETWEEN LAND AND SEA The site for the competition is on a peninsula with extradorinary weather conditions that attracts large groups to take part in this experience year round. Developing a holistic plan for the site and science center that captures the regions distinct character on the basis of nature, landscape, and culture is the goal of our design. On site is a historical lighthouse that assists in configuring the built form with specific alignments to cultivate the essence of the landscape. This idea helps inform a community space that anchors all elements of the site and creates an identity for Randaberg. The identity is constructed through the concept of “In Between Land and Sea. A destination point that articulates the spatial interactions between earth and water.

THE CONVENIENCE AND GROWTH OF KNOWLEDGE The heart of manhattan revolves around the prominate k-state campus, so the west side of town is often neglected. Cico park is included in this neglection of place. The inconenience of travel and bustle of getting from one side of town to the other outweighs the will to take advantage of the campus and downtown amenities. This is where the opportunity of implementing a public library as a social hub rises to the surface. The library is nestled between a children’s playground, a small community pool, and other outdoor sports amentities. This becomes a convenient location for the public to expand their knowledge and grow closer as a community.

ASCEND
Two axes are created to connect the existing built forms and dominant outdoor areas. This begins to give the orientation of the building.
The first level extends outward to capture views, while the second level is compressed on one end to relate to context and extruded at the other to accommodate library space.
With having a raised second floor vertical circulation becomes significant. one block is used for service and egress. The other two become the main route upward.

ENCLOSE
The smaller service blocks act as seperation between lobby space and the quieter areas of the building. The larger one serves as office space and equipment space.
The masses of the building become bearing walls and mask the service spaces. These masses support the second level cantilever as well.
Glass enclosure is oriented to maximize picturesque views to the existing park system and provides adequate daylighting into the

THE EXISTENTIAL G AT H E R I N G O F A C O M M U N I T Y Every life has reason to be celebrated, and the sense of place can supplement this celebration. Manhattan is scattered with churches, but lacks a non religious gathering space to memorialize the passing of a soul. The chosen site is adjecent to the predominant cemetary of the city and is bounded by a series of roads and paths. a gradual slope is the natural topography of the landscape and has outward views to small wooded areas. This location with the prescription of a central gathering space raises the opportunity to create a sense of place for the community to celebrate life together.

The four walls begin to separate from each other to create circulation and two chapels; one large and one small. The NE facing wall thickens to create hidden service spaces.

STRUCTURE
DATUM
Glass walls become the remaining enclosure of the building to provide adequate daylighting through out the year.
A one way timber structural system is implemented to express its exposure and warmth to the chapels. The structure extends outside the enclosure to define outdoor areas as well.
The roof structure is designed to be a thin wood decking spanning between beams. An overhang is implemented over the glass to block the harsh sun during the overheated season.
