Children & Families Children & Families

Introduction This activity guide has been produced to give you a better understanding of the opportunities in your area for getting out and about and keeping active as a family. It includes, parks, leisure centres, libraries, stay and plays for the younger children, plus a wide range of activities for half-term, school holidays and weekends including sports, clubs and courses for young people. There’s also a section for children and families with special needs and disabilities. Being active and having an interest in a variety of things is good for your child’s health and wellbeing. So if you’ve been thinking about your child’s activity levels and how much time they’re spending playing electronic games or watching TV – it’s time to do something about it and make a plan for weekends, holidays etc and try to stick to it. Use this guide to help you plan: 1 2 3 4 5

Have a good look through. Circle everything close to you. If something looks good – call and get a timetable. Highlight free activities. Identify activities for rainy days.

‘The need to be physically active as well as creatively challenged isn’t just for the summer holidays. It’s important for children and families all year round.’ Get out there and try new things and hopefully this will lead to new routines for the whole family. We hope you find this guide useful. Any questions or feedback or if you’d like more copies, please call the Family Information Service on 020 8825 5588 or email children@ealing.gov.uk.

Your Local Libraries We want to help children and young people develop a love of libraries for life! Reading and literacy forms the basis of a child’s learning and development at every stage of life and starts as young as babies and toddlers. And regular trips to the library are a great way for parents to make time to spend with their children. Getting children to choose books and participate in library sessions also develops their confidence and ability to make choices as well as making them more excited about the stories themselves. Every Ealing library has a dedicated space for children and young people with a wide variety of resources including picture, story, information and dual language books, DVDs and computers. Libraries organise a range of activities all year round so check your local library for times and dates. Some library information is also listed on www.ealing. gov.uk/libraries and on noticeboards in the libraries themselves.

Activities for Younger Children Parents, carers and under-fives can enjoy free weekly sessions of Baby Bounce ‘n’ Rhyme and Toddler Story-time in most libraries. Libraries sometimes organise visits by people dressed as popular book characters such as the Gruffalo, Elmer, Poppy the Cat, Kipper the Dog or Horrid Henry – which is a wonderful event for young children in particular to enjoy. Libraries stock the Bookstart baby books packs. So parents of babies aged 0-12 months can collect a free Bookstart pack from their local library if they have not received the pack already from their health visitor. (Please bring your baby’s red health book with you to collect a pack). Library staff also hold sessions at Children’s Centres and other Early Years settings to encourage families with young children to make the most of libraries. Many children’s centres are also visited by our mobile library.

Activities for Older Children Libraries offer educational, fun, creative and book-related activities for older children during term-time and school holidays throughout the year, including: • Author workshops • Storytellers and entertainers • Craft activities • School visits to libraries • Special events to celebrate annual occasions ranging from Chinese New Year to Christmas!

Summer Reading Challenge During the summer holiday, all libraries run the annual Summer Reading Challenge with a different theme every year. The theme for summer 2013 is, ‘Creepy House’. Children aged 4-11 (who are library members) can sign up to the challenge at the start of the summer holiday to receive a join-up pack. Every time a child finishes a book, they receive rewards including stickers and small prizes. Children who complete the challenge by reading six books receive a certificate and a medal! In 2013, as part of the ‘Creepy House’ challenge, children will be able to collect and swap Mystery Munglers Top Trump cards. National research has shown that taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge can help maintain or improve children’s literacy levels during the long break from school. Libraries also offer creative and fun activities linked to the summer theme.

Activities for Young People Teenagers have the opportunity to engage in events designed specifically for them including creative writing and poetry workshops. There is study space for young people to use with a collection of study guides and revision books on hand. In April, May and June each year, selected libraries stay open longer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the busy exam revision period. We also have a range of online resources which can help with homework, independent study or preparation for the Driving Theory Test; these can be accessed online from home, college or school. Activities for children with additional needs and disabilities

Short Breaks

Go online

Short breaks provide opportunities for disabled children and young people to spend time away from their primary carers. These include day, evening, overnight or weekend activities and take place in your child’s own home, the home of an approved carer or a residential or community setting.

l www.ealinghelp.org.uk

Children can access short break provision following an assessment of their family’s social, emotional and health needs and referral to the ESCAN Resource Panel. Find out more at www.ealinghelp. org.uk/ ShortbrBreaks.aspx and download the Short Break Services in Ealing booklet.

Short breaks for the summer holidays and half-terms Ealing funds a number of short break activity providers during school holidays to ensure children, young people and families living with additional needs and disabilities have the opportunity to participate in fun, exciting and challenging activities. Short break activities are listed on www.ealing.gov.uk. All London Borough of Ealing special schools also receive funding to run their own holiday programmes. Families should contact the schools directly. A list of special schools is available on the Ealing Council website. 48 | Children & Families Activity Guide

The EalingHELP website has a ‘Life and Leisure’ section which lists clubs and groups, holiday playschemes, holidays, leisure activity providers and sports. You can also find out about support groups and services and participate in a number of parent/carer forums. The site also offers a news and events section. l www.youngsibs.org.uk From the charity Sibs (the UK charity for siblings of disabled people) comes a new website dedicated to young siblings of disabled people under the age of 18. YoungSibs has a letters section for siblings to receive personalised responses to their questions as well as a safe online chat area for young siblings to talk to one another in the UK, moderated by Sibs’ staff.

Young Carers Project The Ealing Young Carers Project provides one-to-one and peer support, advice and outings for young carers in Ealing. Please get in touch if you would like to know more. Call Kathryn Sobczak on 020 8326 7044 or email ksobczak@brentfordfccst.com. Visit www.brentfordfccst.com.

P.E.S.T.S Another great resource for finding out what’s available in terms of activities for children and families is the P.E.S.T.S (Parents of Ealing Self-Help Training Scheme) Additional Needs Handbook which clearly gives details of the activities and full contact information. Read it online at www.ealinghelp. org.uk or get a print copy sent to you for free from Sue Meacham, P.E.S.T.S 020 8571 9954 or email pests-ealing@ hotmail.co.uk
