GUIDING PRINCIPLES Nido, Chile, and the world are facing one of the most serious public health crises any of us have faced in our lifetimes. Within this context, Nido continues to deliver on its core academic mission and strives to provide the best distance learning program available in Santiago. Next year we will open online but will reopen our campus as soon as it is safe to do so. We recognize that we will likely resume face-to-face learning before immunity from the Virus can be guaranteed and, therefore, we have been developing safety protocols and procedures that will allow us to not only be as safe as possible but also be the safest campus in Chile. In both the provision of online learning and the reopening of campus, we are striving for progress, not perfection, and recognize that our entire community will need to be flexible and adaptable as conditions change and as we learn from our experiences. In order to plan during a time of crisis and uncertainty, we looked not only to our mission and our values but also to the following principles which will guide us in all of our thinking:

1

The physical and emotional safety and health of Nido community members are our top priorities.

2

Learning is our core purpose and should drive decision making.

3

Learning is inherently social, whether on campus or online.

4

Communication must be clear and timely to ensure all members of the community understand the vision and expectations.

5

Flexibility and empathy will be essential for all community members as we learn and grow from this experience.

2

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES RIGHTS - Every student, teacher, staff member, and parent has the right to be cared for and valued. The Nido community has the right to expect every reasonable effort for emotional and physical safety. Within the context of COVID-19 this means that there will be a heightened level of concern for the health and wellbeing of our community. While it is not possible to eliminate the risk that students, teachers, or staff members will be exposed to COVID-19 in any model of a campus reopening, every reasonable precaution will be taken to minimize this risk. RESPONSIBILITIES - Public health is a matter of public trust. Every student, teacher, staff member, and parent has the responsibility to value the emotional and physical safety of their fellow community members. Our interactions with our environment and with each other within the context of COVID-19 means complying willingly with all rules and policies designed to keep our community safe and healthy. We must think of others, knowing that everyone has a different level of risk to the virus and a different personal tolerance of risk, and be sensitive and respectful of this. Only together can we keep our community safe and healthy, and policies and guidelines must be respected and followed even if it causes inconvenience to oneself.

3

REOPENING INDICATORS Nido will begin reopening its campus when: Government officials have given us permission to do so; Health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with guidelines from the Chilean Ministry of Health and public health officials have been established; The campus environment is prepared to facilitate the proper healthy and safety practices; Community members have received and understand the health and safety practices.

LEARNING MODELS LOW

Face-to-Face Learning

Hybrid Learning

K RIS

Distance Learning: This is similar to the model our community experienced in the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, but with improvements. Our campus is closed, but learning continues. Students attend school virtually through synchronous and asynchronous lessons, activities, and projects. Nido has been updating its Distance Learning Plan in each division based on our experiences, parent and student feedback, professional development, and best practices for the 2020-2021 Academic School Year. More information will be provided prior to the start of classes, but students in EYS, ES, and MS may expect more synchronous learning compared to the distance learning program in the 2019-2020 school year, and all students will benefit from a constantly improving program.

M IU ED

The plan developed will allow our community to fluidly shift between learning models as needed.

RI SK

M

Distance Learning

Hybrid Model: This model combines face-to-face learning with coordinated synchronous and asynchronous lessons. This model recognizes that learning is social and social interaction is essential for emotional wellbeing, but also that the safety of our community is a top priority. This model introduces physical distancing, health and safety precautions, and a density reduction of the campus to reduce risk and exposure within our community, while at the same time providing some face-to-face interaction between students and teachers on campus each week.

HIG H RIS K

Face to Face Learning Model This is a traditional school experience with students attending school in person five days a week, with some health and safety precautions still in place. The risk of exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19 is considered low enough that 100% density on campus is appropriate.

HYBRID LEARNING MODEL During the hybrid model, if the Chilean Government permits and the School deems to be safe, the school will function with approximately 50% population density and with students in each division in Group A or Group B to both increase social distancing and contact tracing. Families will be grouped together when possible. Each group will be on campus two days in a row to allow extensive cleaning between groups and for the maximum time for any symptoms to develop between their sessions on-campus so they may continue to stay home and not spread the virus if needed. These schedules represent examples from each division. Families with high-risk medical conditions may be in touch with their divisions for arrangements to be kept in a full distance-learning model.

HYBRID LEARNING MODEL Example Schedule: Early Years School The Early Years School hybrid model will employ what is called a “Room and Zoom” learning plan. One group of students will be on campus in a de-densified classroom from 8:00am-10:30am (times may vary according to grade level). The children will be receiving instruction in the core academic content areas. The other group stays home and receives instruction through a 30 min online session, supported by online learning resources. Every afternoon, all children are invited to engage in “Learning is Fun” with different live offerings. On Wednesdays, all students will be engaged in online instruction (30 minutes live sessions), and in the afternoon from 2:00pm-3:30pm they may join “Learning is Fun.” MONDAY GROUP A

HYBRID LEARNING MODEL Example Schedule: HIGH SCHOOL The High School hybrid learning model will incorporate both distance and campus learning modes. All students begin the morning in distance learning classes; midday, there will be a ninety minute break for students to have lunch and commute to campus. The afternoon learning session will center around a “Meetings and Modules” concept. This means that one group of students will come to campus to participate in an extended, mission-aligned learning “meeting”; students at home will be working on virtual learning “modules”. IB Higher Level classes will have extended learning time each afternoon. The group of students on campus will have the option of signing up for afternoon de-densified club, athletic and wellness options. On Wednesdays, all students will engage in distance learning from home with classes, Advisory, Flex programming, and optional afternoon wellness activities. While the distance learning and hybrid learning schedules will differ slightly; students and faculty will be able to move between the learning modes as required. The high school models have been designed using best practice for remote learning with older students and with a focus on delivering a high quality IB learning experience. TIME

HEALTH & SAFETY Please note that a comprehensive health and safety manual is currently being reviewed by an external team of experts and will be released prior to beginning the Hybrid Model.

Physical Distancing • • • • • •

Reduced population density on campus of approximately 50% Students will sit approximately 1.8 meters apart in classrooms Staggered start and dismissal times No parent or visitor access No use of playgrounds No food service

Screening, Hygiene, And Preventative Health

• All community members must quarantine for 14 days after travel from another country prior to returning to campus and self-report to the Nido Health Unit, including students with household members who traveled from another country • Required use of masks on campus • Temperature reading for all students, faculty and staff upon entering • Increased cleaning staff throughout the campus • Hand sanitizer stations installed throughout campus • Hand sanitizer available in each classroom • Established hand-washing times • Individuals with symptoms or fever are required to stay home • Isolation center for individuals who show symptoms during the course of the day • Medical screening for individuals with fever or symptoms required before return to campus

Cleaning And Sanitization

• Increased cleaning staff and deep cleaning on Wednesdays between Groups A and B • Frequent and comprehensive cleaning of shared areas and high-touch surfaces • Increased ventilation in indoor spaces

Contact Tracing

• Younger students are divided into cohorts, reducing social mixing • Each division is divided into Group A and Group B with 5 days between their return to campus • The Health Unit will provide orientation on contact tracing and indications for possible new cases

12

WELLNESS Social and Emotional Health

• Counselors, nurses, and staff are available to attend students’ needs as required • Counselors will proactively check in with students needing support • The EYS/ES divisions will hold socio-emotional read alouds as part of the distance learning activities. • Programs such as Caring School Community, Second Step, Safer and Smarter kids and the Active Parenting Course will run throughout the year • The MS/HS will be promoting its Advisory Program in order to attend to students’ social and emotional needs

Wellness Family Tips

• Nido invites the community to maintain a calm attitude, continue to listen to one another and offer reassurance. Children learn by example. Continue to be a role model. • Be aware of how you talk about COVID-19. Your discussion about COVID-19 can increase or decrease students' fears. • Focus on the positive. Celebrate having more time to spend as a family and the ability to go back to school as part of the Hybrid model. • Parents/guardians should monitor television, internet, and social media viewing—both for themselves and their children. • Foster a sense of control. Following these reopening guidelines and offering guidance on what to do to prevent infection offers a greater sense of control, which reduces anxiety. • Encourage healthy practices to boost the immune system. Eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, do breathing exercise to calm the nervous system and exercise.

13

MOVING FORWARD Please note that this plan is subject to change according to new information received daily and local regulations, and more detailed information will be released prior to beginning the hybrid model. The School will move forward through this new landscape with flexibility and with the best intentions to provide both a safe and excellent education for our students.

COMING SOON More detailed information on health and safety measures, transportation, divisional schedules, and instructional materials and meetings for the entire community prior to a return to campus.

THANK YOU Thank you to the many international schools who shared their experiences and resources with us through AAIE through the past months and especially to ASIJ and Graded for guidance in our reopening plans.
