Groot Constantia is one wine farm we love, as it is rich in history and culture Groot Constantia is nestled in the fertile Constantia Valley. It is here that we believe time should be taken to first understand and then consume Constantia award-winning wines In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope which today is called Cape Town. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples. In 1685 he chose 891 morgen (about 763 ha) situated behind Table Mountain for its wine growing potential and magnificent sensory. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that the had enough stock of thus acclaimed and precious product. The founder named his farm “Constantia’ after the Latin word constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the wine farm follows in these footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of the perfection at Groot Constantia. South Africa's oldest wine became so renowned it appears in Jane Austen's novel 'Sense and Sensibility' as a cure for a broken heart and is drunk to lift a character’s spirit in 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' by Charles Dickens. Perhaps it even soothed Napoleon as it was served during his exile on the island of Saint Helena.

Shiraz Tasting notes: The warm ripening conditions of 2016 brings out the riper side of this grape variety. Savoury notes are supported by liquorice and black pepper, as well as ripe plums and a hint of smoke. The wine shows beautiful intensity on the palate. The natural acidy adds freshness to the wine, and tannins are soft and approachable. Minimum filtration prior to bottling ensures the intensity and depth of the wine. Some sediment may form over time
