The downtown area of Chicago is mapped by taking measure with a compass. Fort Dearborn is the center of origin for Chicago and becomes the Alpha location of the mapping process. The city is treated as a landscape where street names and addresses do not play an important role in the mapping; instead textures, colors and materials are focused on to create a picture or landscape of the downtown area. Compass bearings and footpaces are being used to measure distances and directions from one spot to another as the journey covers all ten locations.

In this chapter, the downtown area of Chicago is mapped by using a purely visual language. No letters or numbers will be used. Every location is depicted with a 360o panoramic photograph capturing the surroundings. The starting point is the same as in the first chapter, the Fort Dearborn site at Michigan Avenue and Chicago River. Image series photography is used to convey directional information. The target site is presented in wire form sculpture as well as schematic diagram.

On the bridge tower front side wall, there’s a relief of human figures and an angel. The main figures are a man holding a sword on his right hand while his left hand is holding an American Indian. Above the man and the Indian there is an angel flying over them. Beneath the relief there is a short history of fort Dearborn carved into the concrete. Right in front of the bridge tower there are two stars, choose the one on the east side.

Chapter four treats the city as a species. The downtown area is mapped by using a conventional map system, The words from each site are carried over from chapter three, only here they ser ve to act as symptoms from a metaphorical body or person who happens to be the city of Chicago. Imager y or schematic diagrams are avoided. The analogy of the body part is explained clearly. Ever y location is treated as a patient with specific needs and requires needs diagnostic, treatment, and follow up.

The human eye in many cultures are believed to shine the inner light to other people and surroundings. The eye gives us the ability to see, and since the pupil is the center of the eye, it fits as a metaphor for a street light.
