WE THINK FIRST AND FOREMOST ABOUT THE PATIENT AND FAMILY The healing environment is central to the well-being and recovery of the patient. As designers, we must always view the healthcare world from the perspective of the patient and their family. This provides a clear framework against which our designs are developed. Our designs integrate simple things like privacy and dignity, the patient’s perception and control of their immediate environment, and the organization of processes so that wherever possible “the process is brought to the patient” – not the other way round.

WE LOOK TO SIMPLIFY THE CLINICAL PROCESS Clinical processes are increasingly complex and driven by the latest technology. Clinical governance demands that care pathways are followed rigorously. Economic pressures dictate that scarce resources deliver best value. Patients expect the best clinical outcomes. To assure quality, improve productivity and efficiency, and encourage innovation in healthcare delivery, we have developed a culture receptive to “LEAN” thinking and the simplification of clinical processes.

4

WE PRACTICE EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN Clinicians have long been committed to the principle of evidence-based medicine and they expect nothing less from healthcare designers. Within IBI Group, we embrace this philosophy, looking to base designs on tried and tested principles wherever possible, and to test and evaluate new ideas. We have a significant body of knowledge that we can draw from, and are always looking to add to this knowledge through both design experience and our research and development team, THiNK.

Healthcare Expertise Our vision is to create the best possible healthcare future for patients, the public, and healthcare teams alike, based on our fundamental understanding of the clinical and emotional needs of patients and families, the operational processes through which care is delivered, and the work environments necessary to deliver that care. Healthcare is changing rapidly, driven by technological innovation, more responsive models of care, and assuring value for money. We are delivering the healthcare infrastructure of the future now – efficient, agile and, above all, future-proof. We understand the technical and organizational complexity of the clinical processes which underpin modern healthcare, and how to organize these to assure quality and make best use of resources. Our intelligent systems approach to healthcare infrastructure, optimizing effectiveness, accessibility, and logistical efficiency; delivers state-of-the-art facilities which incorporate our dedication to evidence-based design. We create facilities that encourage a sense of community and social well-being, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and respect for the natural environment. We draw on our unparalleled expertise in healthcare strategy and design, and experience gained from private and public health systems, to support clients and projects around the globe. Our integrated service covers all stages from strategic visioning, through feasibility, programming, briefing, design and construction management, to commissioning healthcare infrastructure. Experience of procurement routes from traditional through to Public-Private Partnerships (P3) translates into winning strategies, delivering affordable solutions, on time, to the benefit of our partners and clients alike. Our projects include new-build, infill and revitalization schemes, and range from small clinics to major academic health science campuses and the master planning of new Smart Communities worldwide. 5

PATIENTS WILL MAKE CARE DECISIONS Patients will exercise more choice in the ways that they access these services and many will contribute proactively to their own care management. Systems will hold the core knowledge of the patient’s health status and medical history. Using this information, healthcare professionals will work with the patient to plan the care program to deliver the best outcomes, to the highest levels of patient satisfaction, and making best use of the resources available.

1

E-HEALTH WILL TRANSFORM CARE AS WE KNOW IT Tele-health and tele-medicine already have a significant impact on the deployment of healthcare resources. New e-health technologies can only accelerate this process. Whilst the benefits of tele-medicine are clear for geographically diverse communities, e-health technologies are now being deployed in more compact urban areas to improve patient accessibility, enable multi-disciplinary team working, and assure quality and outcomes.

INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS SIGNAL THE ADVENT OF PRO-ACTIVE CARE Emerging technologies, ranging from gene-mapping to the application of risk-stratification of care groups, can empower patients and clinicians to choose how best to manage their individual healthcare options. As they become more widely adopted, these ultra-intelligent healthcare systems could have a profound impact on style and place of healthcare delivery.

IBI HEALTHCARE+

Developing Healthcare Strategies Our vision is to create and deliver the best of all possible healthcare futures. We must look to new ways of delivering healthcare because the current system is failing to meet expectations, is largely unaffordable, and unsustainable. The solution to this dilemma is at the heart of how we will help shape the healthcare infrastructure of the future. It comes from our global knowledge and experience, our innovative approach to design challenges, and our ability to provide robust, forwardlooking healthcare strategies. This future will be driven by both patient expectations and economic pressures – but it will be made possible by new models of care and our ability to harness information and technology to improve the health of the population, to treat patients more efficiently, and to deliver better outcomes with higher levels of satisfaction. Our current infrastructure will need to adapt to support these new models of care – and we are actively structuring this into our projects now. The successful healthcare infrastructure of the future will be designed along the principles of intelligent systems for intelligent communities. It will be lean and efficient, providing a healing environment for patients and an attractive place to work for healthcare professionals. The Health Strategy Team within IBI Group brings together the group’s vast experience and expertise in the field of healthcare strategy and planning, to provide leading-edge knowledge and support for IBI Group’s healthcare projects and clients across the globe.

Health strategy at IBI Group is about: • Understanding the key influences which shape our healthcare systems – both now and in the future. • Having a detailed knowledge of best clinical practice and how this is delivered through the application of leading-edge information and medical technology. • Ensuring that facilities are able to support this best practice, whilst making the best use of scarce healthcare resources and investment in infrastructure. • Future proofing the facilities which support these services and delivering the intelligent healthcare systems of the future. Our services cover all aspects of developing and delivering strategy; from understanding the key influences and drivers of healthcare futures, through visioning of how services could develop under these influences; to the planning of services to embrace this vision; the sizing of the functional content and space necessary to deliver the plan; the appraisal of how well the current infrastructure could be adapted to support these services; the writing of business cases to secure approval for capital investment; and the development of the clinical brief, the functional program; and the data sheets. 6

IBI PULSE To support our collaborative delivery of healthcare projects, we created IBI Pulse – a global network of international experts acclaimed in the delivery of healthcare services. They provide unparalleled leadership and insight into best clinical practice, and contribute to our debate on healthcare futures and peer review of our proposals.

9

Creating Healthcare Environments Our firm’s extensive portfolio covers all aspects of healthcare including acute, primary, and behavioral mental healthcare schemes, ranging in scale from the smallest to the largest projects, in both public and private sector settings. We respond positively to the design challenge in every scheme, listening to our clients’ views and using our extensive clinical expertise to inform and refine their ideas. We are very aware of the drivers that influence healthcare design such as; the optimal therapeutic patient environment, evidence-based design, LEAN efficiency, future flexibility, infection control, privacy, and dignity. Working together, we seamlessly incorporate these drivers into our projects to realize the clients’ vision. Good consultation and briefing can be used to support clinical best practice through design. We listen to our clients, working in parallel with our healthcare planners to articulate intelligent, high quality designs with the agility and flexibility to respond to future change. Our R&D team, IBI THiNK, champions cutting-edge healthcare design in all its forms. This gives our clients the opportunity to collaborate with experienced healthcare specialists to create bespoke solutions to advance patient care, whether that is an intervention to improve rehabilitation, or a new product that assists the efficiency of nursing staff. Cross-sector design experience, gleaned from across our four key disciplines; architecture, transportation, master planning, and intelligent systems, combined with our international presence, enables our clients to benefit from state-of-the-art design innovation to deliver holistic, future-proof projects.

ACUTE HEALTHCARE 4

We are consistently delivering award-winning acute healthcare projects all over the world and across our scope of services. New build and refurbishment, these projects have honed our design team’s experience of various models of care, strengthening our understanding of healthcare operations and enabling our firm to benchmark best practice design solutions, which can be delivered within constrained economic frameworks. Experienced with the complex make-up of acute facilities, we are experts at managing the expectations of multiple stakeholders, carefully balancing the need for clinical efficiency and patient care. Research, development, and innovation are integral to our design approach, adding value to our service. For example, on a recent urgent care and trauma project, our designers were involved in hands-on research working alongside the lead clinical consultants to develop LEAN clinical pathways, which stressed key observation lines to create a safe, secure environment for both patients and staff.

IBI HEALTHCARE+

Shaping Smart Cities and Healthy Communities The Smart City model offers a way to improve the quality of life, competitiveness, and economic and environmental sustainability of the modern city by the incorporation of technology and intelligent systems into the design of both the physical and human infrastructure. Smart Cities are already a reality. Government initiatives in Europe, China, and Japan are exploring innovative ways to make the cities of the 21st Century more efficient, more livable, and more competitive. The Smart Cities movement feeds directly into the development of healthier, more sustainable communities. As we move from the reactive process of treating people when they become sick to a proactive wellness agenda, the decisions which inform Smart Cities come increasingly into play. Working at a strategic level with healthcare teams to create options for healthier lifestyle choices, we strive to address the work / life balance – reducing the stress of modern existence and its negative impact on health. The Smart City also looks to support senior citizens and people with long-term health problems through the use of tele-care and tele-health technology. This enables people to pursue active and independent lifestyles within the security of personalized support systems. Drawing on our expertise in healthcare strategy, architecture, urban planning, transportation, and intelligent systems software, we are ideally placed to lead in the planning of future healthcare and wellness delivery in the Smart Cities and healthy communities of tomorrow.

MASTER PLANNING AND URBAN PLANNING / RENOVATION AND RE-USE Few healthcare facilities exist in isolation. We have a long track record of master plans and urban designs which demonstrate our ability to embed healthcare services into the wider urban fabric. We have completed commissions ranging from high level feasibility studies to complex, multi-phased redevelopment strategies for both new and existing hospital sites. In many hospitals, the implementation of new models of care and the application of new technologies are constrained by estates and infrastructure that were designed and developed for a different era. Re-using and revitalizing estate, whilst all the time maintaining the continuity of healthcare services, is one of the greatest challenges facing healthcare designers today. With expert designers, and over 200 successful renovation projects to support this, we are confident in our ability to analyze our clients’ needs and imaginatively revitalize infrastructure to support the healthcare services of the future. 4

4 Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan responds positively to the unique micro-climate, providing an open, welcoming, and therapeutic environment for patients and staf f.

We are committed to both the economic and environmental sustainability of our healthcare projects, whether single buildings or infrastructure developed over a wider community. Our goal is to achieve the highest possible LEED / BREEAM scores and ensure that our projects provide good quality healthcare environments, supporting affordable and sustainable services. Our integrated approach to the design process brings together people who can create comprehensive strategies that incorporate all the elements that enhance sustainability today and promote smart growth into the future. Intelligent healthcare services in years to come will be supported by intelligent facilities. They will manage not only the technology of the building itself, but also the operation of the services delivered from the building, assuring both the quality and efficiency of those services. This will go beyond simple timetabling, to real time management of facilities and human resources in response to predicted changes in demand. The economic benefits from the application of intelligent systems to healthcare services and facilities will imminently drive its wider adoption sooner rather than later.

NORBURY CHAIR Recognizing the challenges faced by behavioral mental health staff when faced by distressed service users, we developed the “Norbury Chair.” Weighted and ergonomically shaped, the chair is designed to be immovable to inspire respect and provide comfort.

4 SENSE SENSITIVE DESIGN Sense Sensitive Design emphasizes the way the built environment is perceived through the senses. The optimal combination of elements such as natural light, views, color, art, and texture can offer powerful therapeutic benefits to patient groups.

CLINICAL INNOVATION The pursuit to achieve clinical and operational effectiveness has resulted in innovations such as the “Barn Theatre.” Comprising four operating tables within a sterile, climatically controlled open plan area, its design is proved to: increase surgical team work and efficiency, improve peer awareness and supervision, reduce infection rates, and provide a better quality working environment.

Driving Design Innovation – THiNK Our international reputation for thought leadership is underpinned by a strong design research ethos that is supported by the work of IBI THiNK. THiNK is responsible for encouraging, capturing, and developing the intellectual capital vested in IBI Group’s projects, people, and processes. Inspired by the desire to create successful patient-centered environments, the work of THiNK highlights the significant link between research and practice. Its activities encompass innovations in clinical planning, product and furniture design, improvements in environmental design, as well as explaining, through collated evidence and experience, the impact of the built environment on the human condition. Sharing this knowledge with our clients and partners through formal networks, advice, and guidance is an essential element of THiNK. With a reputation for innovation, THiNK has underpinned the firm’s knowledge and understanding of the sensory impact of the built environment on the building user, particularly in healthcare. This knowledge has been furnished with findings from medical and psychological fields, which are then applied to design solutions. As well as supporting our research and industry partners THiNK initiates its own research, funding pilot studies to collate first-hand evidence to help improve the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of the built environment.

IBI HEALTHCARE+ DRIVING DESIGN INNOVATION – THiNK

THiNK – RESEARCH AND INNOVATION 4 5

Challenging the norm, exploring new ideas, and pushing the boundaries of industry knowledge and capability is an inherent philosophy for our in-house R&D team, THiNK. The process of taking information from other sectors, such as clinical research, and applying that information to design solutions, often provides a holistic way of looking at a recurring problem. The added value this service can be best exemplified by looking at two successfully realized THiNK projects. BedPod was designed to address privacy and dignity for patients staying in multi-bed accommodation. After successful 1:1 prototype testing, the UK’s Department of Health incorporated BedPod into their Showcase Hospital programme for evaluation in use. This will be subject to the THiNK post project evaluation process for further refinement. The Cruciform Ward takes a new look at multi-bed accommodation. By a radical design rethink, the Cruciform Ward addresses cross infection and privacy and dignity issues, while providing a space and cost-effective solution.

THiNK PROJECTS BedPod  Developed as part of the UK’s Department of Health funded competition Design for Patient Dignity, BedPod is a component-based, prefabricated, integrated bed environment for hospitals, offering greater flexibility of space and improved patient privacy and dignity. Product Design  We develop products to respond to everyday healthcare challenges. An example is the Patient Deceased Bag. Developed for the King’s Fund, it provides a dignified method to hand private belongings to a bereaved family member. Cruciform Ward  The four-bed “Cruciform Ward” provides a costeffective and area efficient solution, creating a more informal layout, freeing up extra space for family and visitors, and addressing needs for patient privacy and dignity, as well as infection control.

DIVERSE DISCIPLINES IBI Group’s professionals in architecture, landscape, transportation/building engineering, and master planning fulfill various capacities in delivering influential and foundational social infrastructure projects.

5 THE NEXT GENERATION IBI Group are now involved in pioneering the “next generation” of P3 projects, where private sector partners share the risks on both the capital development and the income streams used to secure the debt. These models will be the cornerstone for major new investments by both not-for-profit hospitals in the USA and UK hospitals looking to develop their own infrastructure at home or in partnerships overseas.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE IBI Group uses principles of innovation, sustainability, and technology to design functional and creative projects that fulfill the programming intent and our clients’ goals.

FAST TRACK DELIVERY Our global office presence and abundant manpower allows us the flexibility to adjust staffing levels, using global or local resources, to meet tight timelines.

Securing Procurement The quest for better value, and the timely and quality assured delivery of the next generation of healthcare facilities has stirred government agencies and commercial organizations to look for new and more efficient means of procurement. The IBI Group has extensive experience of winning commissions under these new procurement routes and working successfully to deliver state-of-the-art facilities, often surpassing client and user expectations, on time and within budget. There are many types of procurement routes, but most fall within three main groups: • P3, PFI, and Equity Investments • Frameworks • Design-Build Our mission at IBI Group is not only to design the best healthcare infrastructure possible, but to make sure that these designs are turned into reality. We work to make this happen, collaborating with partners and clients, pitching our ideas against the best of the competition and, above all, delivering practical and workable solutions to complex problems. Winning is not just about having the best idea, but making sure that it works at every level and stands up to the most rigorous scrutiny that evaluation can throw at it. Procurement may only be a means-to-an-end, but it is important if we are to create the environments to which we aspire. Our success in winning and delivering healthcare projects is based on an in-depth understanding of the procurement process itself, whilst maintaining a focus on the objectives we seek to deliver through procurement. Our extensive experience of working these routes with contractors, developers, and funders, ensures that we make best use of time to deliver a winning and deliverable proposal within tight timescales.

NATIONAL AND LOCAL FRAMEWORKS Supply Chain Frameworks originated in the manufacturing and logistics sectors and adapted to healthcare infrastructure. We have been involved since their inception at a national level in the UK through ProCure21, ProCure21+, NHS LIFT, and Designed for Life. Frameworks establish a strong working partnership with the client and are credited with delivering high-quality and cost-effective solutions. They are the favored procurement route for most large commercial organizations, offering real benefits over traditional routes. Our firm’s unparalleled healthcare experience saw us pilot the original ProCure21 framework, and since then, we have delivered over 30 projects with seven separate Supply Chain Partners. Our ability to deliver design excellence within an integrated team has seen several firsts, including the first 100% single room hospital in Wales, under the Designed for Life framework. This has underlined the significant qualitative, cost, and timescale benefits that collaborative arrangements can offer.
