Designed to address both clinical and construction needs within the healthcare environment, the BedPod is a pre-fabricated, rapidly deployable product providing a fully integrated bed environment suitable for the refurbishment of existing wards as well as new build projects. As a flexible solution, the BedPod can be used as a temporary or permanent installation in hospitals and healthcare facilities, creating private spaces even within a multi-bed ward environment. The BedPod was developed for the Department of Health ‘Design for Patient Dignity Challenge’ set by the Design Council to improve hospital environments. IBI THiNK in collaboration with Billings Jackson Design and manufacturing partner SAS International entered the challenge to improve patient dignity at the bedside. Designed as a component based system it lends itself to a multitude of future additions in response to changing service needs. Bespoke design solutions for hospitals worldwide and a range of optional applications, such as a pull down bed for relatives, makes the BedPod an exciting, flexible and economic answer that maximises patient dignity and clinical efficiency. Supply of the major components of the BedPod from one source ready for installation as a single unit will ease the procurement process as well as providing more flexibility to the construction programme. When used in an existing facility, BedPod can be quickly installed, with minimal disruption to the existing hospital services, creating extra bed spaces without the costs associated with major refurbishment.

BedPod has been designed to provide many of the advantages of single room accommodation, such as good acoustics and patient privacy without the extra expense of single room construction. It has recently been installed in two NHS hospitals for evaluation in use as part of the Department of Health’s Showcase Hospital programme: Castle Hill Hospital in Hull and Kings College Hospital, London.
