TABLE TALK We hope you enjoyed your time cooking together. Many of you might be a bit young, but for this Table Talk we want you to channel your inner child playing Oregon Trail and apply it to your adult life now. Imagine it’s 1835 and you are a couple traveling the historic Oregon Trail in an epic real-life adventure. The Oregon Trail didn’t follow a single set path. While most traveled a route that passed by notable landmarks, there was never just one set of wagon routes leading west. Pioneers often spread out for several miles across the plains out of necessity to hunt, find grazing patches and to avoid the choking dust cloud kicked up by other wagon trains. Think about this and explore the ideas of how your life is metaphorically a path on the Oregon Trail. Talk about the following topics:
–
How has your life stayed the course of the trail you set path on as a couple and individually?
– –
In what ways have you chosen the trail less followed? What does your path forward look like?
The Oregon Trail was littered with discarded supplies. As traffic on the Oregon Trail increased, a bustling industry of frontier trading posts sprang up to supply food and equipment for a journey that would typically last five months. Many pioneer families purchased more provisions than they actually needed. The overloading resulted in sections of the trail becoming junk heaps filled with discarded food, barrels and wagon parts. Fort Laramie in Wyoming eventually became known as “Camp Sacrifice” for its reputation as a dumping ground.
–
What metaphorical “stuff” in your relationship do you give space or life to that should be left in the dumping grounds along the Oregon Trail?
–
You’re heading on an adventure west. It will take five months and you can only bring five items from your home. What are you going to bring and why?
–
Do you or your significant other “purchase more provisions than you actually need?”
–
If yes, how can you come together as a couple to hold each other accountable?
GOLD RUSH DICE GAME You headed west during the great gold rush to strike it rich. It hasn’t been an easy road! Along with painting messages and mottos on their wagon canvases, pioneers also developed a tradition of carving their names, hometowns and dates of passage on some of the stone landmarks they encountered during their journey west.
For the final activity of this date you and your partner must work together to solve this Wild West mystery - escape room style! Are you up for catching an outlaw?!
One of the most notable locations was Independence Rock, a 128 foot tall granite

SET UP: To begin, pull all the Wild West Mystery print items out of your included bag and lay them out on a clear, flat space. Have scissors, tape, and a pencil handy! Locate the sheet of paper with the stagecoach and compass on it. Go ahead and cut out the puzzle pieces following the dotted line. Once all puzzle pieces are cut out, place them inside of the envelope that has “$5000 reward” in the top corner. HOW TO PLAY: The introduction story below gives a hint to where to find the first clue. This clue will start a path of clues. Solving each clue will yield a code; when you figure out a code, look for an envelope with a picture matching the clue you solved. Write the code on the red blanks and head to datenightinbox.com/wildwest to check if the code is correct. If the code is correct, you can open the envelope to reveal the next clue. Each clue is only used once! NO GUESSING! If you get the code wrong, figure out why you got it wrong and how the right code was determined. We have included a sheet with hints for each clue on it in case you get stuck and need a push! If you feel up for this challenge, read the story below and get started!
Let’s Begin! You are a security agent for Southern Pacific Railroad, traveling by stagecoach to deliver the railroad payroll, when you hear gunshots! Outlaws stop the stagecoach and take everything of value, including the payroll, leaving you stranded in the desert! All they leave behind is a wanted poster. Can you lure the bandits into a trap and retrieve the stolen bag of railroad loot? The outlaw’s gang arrives in an hour to split the spoils, better giddyup!
Until Next Time
