tribute to a loved one by writing a message on a star and pinning it to our special wall. This was so successful and made the night so special we are having a Memory Wall for our 2013 Walk.
2013 will be our seventh walk in support of Nightingale House and, to date, we have had over 7,000 women walk with us and raised over £700,000.
“Me, my daughter and my auntie walked in memory of my wonderful mum, nan and sister. This is the first time my daughter took part having reached the grand old age of 10, she was bursting with excitement on the night”
We see generations of families coming together to walk in support of Nightingale House, very often in memory of a loved one. 2012 saw our first Midnight Walk Memory Wall — where participants had the opportunity to pay
Michelle Kelsall, one of our 2012 walkers, said
Join us on 22 June for our Midnight Walk. The atmosphere is electric and you will have a wonderful evening whilst raising money for a fantastic cause.
Christmas 2012 The Christmas season is a very busy time for everyone at Nightingale House. Santa’s Grotto at Bellis Brothers Garden Centre in Holt, was launched in style when Santa made his entrance on a sleigh pulled by real reindeer. We also had a Santa Grotto at the Celtic Fair at Broughton Shopping Centre this year and that was very successful too. We would like to thank all our volunteers for their help to make these events so successful. The St Giles Christmas Concert saw over 350 people being thoroughly entertained by the Rhos Male Voice Choir, Wrexham Citadel Band, Deborah Parry-Edwards and Aled Wyn Davies. Shortly afterwards, 135 people enjoyed anevening of entertainment by the Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir, in the beautiful surroundings of Eaton Park.

Volunteers
A very big thank you to all our volunteers who have worked so hard for us throughout 2012. Your dedication and support is vital for Nightingale House to operate and function the way it does.We are so proud of our 500 people that make up our ‘volunteer army’. We had a fantastic response to our recent volunteer recruitment appeal and have been able to recruit new volunteers for our reception, kitchen, hospice shops and fundraising events. However, we do still need more volunteers so if you have time to spare do please consider volunteering with us. Our volunteers cover a wide age range — from students at school or college, to people who have retired and have time on their hands — and everyone brings a mixture of skills and experience. Whilst Nightingale House benefits from the support of our volunteers, volunteering can also be very rewarding. It is a way of giving something back to the community, meeting new people and gaining new skills and experiences. We have recently experienced a number of volunteers leaving us because the skills they gained from volunteering with us enabled them to get full time jobs.
Gwirfoddolwyr
Beryl Williams is one of our more recent volunteer recruits. She told us: “Having retired as a Senior Nurse Lecturer at Glyndwr University I wanted to offer my experience to a really worthwhile cause. I understand why the need for ongoing fundraising is so important and have been happy to help at events, on the reception desk and with hospice merchandise. My limited mobility has been factored into all the tasks I have been asked to undertake and I feel really happy to be a small part in a large jigsaw. I would encourage anyone who would like to know more about the wide range of opportunities to pick up the phone for an informal chat. It’s as simple as that.”
Volunteer Vacancies We are still keen to recruit Volunteers in the following areas: UU Assisting in the kitchen UU Administration / data entry / Office work UU Assisting on our In-Patient Ward / Serving meals UU Working in our charity shops in Cefn Mawr, Brook Street, Furniture Showroom and Flint. UU Assisting in our warehouse sorting clothes / books / moving furniture / PAT testing electrical goods Learn new skills, make new friends, support a worthy cause.

Church and Eaton Chapel. All of these events helped to raise over £15,000 for Nightingale House and I would like to thank everybody who attended or volunteered their help.
I hope that you and your family had a good Christmas and I send you my sincere best wishes for 2013. As always, the Christmas period was very busy, with events such as the grottos at Bellis Farm Shop and Broughton Shopping Centre; our annual Christmas Fair at Wrexham Memorial Hall; and our two fabulous carol concerts in St Giles
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has supported Nightingale House over the past year, including all those who play our lottery. The lottery has funded 54 days of hospice care during 2012. Thank you to all of you who who have shopped in, or donated goods to, our shops. The income from our shops has provided 27 days of care. It is your continued generosity and support that ensures Nightingale House is able to provide the best quality care to our patients and
their families when they need it the most. This year, 2013, it is going to cost £2.6 million to maintain our current level of services. This equates to £7,040 per day to run Nightingale House. For 2013, we will receive £600,000 from statutory sources — enough funding to run Nightingale House for 85 days. Therefore, we need to raise the remaining £2 Million to fund the other 280 days. As I am sure you are aware, so many charities are finding it difficult to raise sufficient funds to fully support their work and we are grateful for all the support you’re able to give. I can assure you that no matter what size donation we receive it will be put to good use, so even though we know times
are difficult for everyone please do consider continuing your support of Nightingale House through 2013. In this newsletter, we have compiled a wide range of exciting fundraising activities and events that are planned for 2013. We hope you will continue to support these activities, whether it’s taking part in our Ladies' Midnight Walk, our ‘men-only’ Drag Walk, or coming to the Wrexham Food Festival. For those a little bolder, we have a selection of Challenge Events you can take part in on our behalf. We hope there is something for everyone and I look forward to being able to tell you about the successes of these events.
Thank you to Jan’s Cards in Ruthin, who sold a fabulous £759 worth of cards for us over the Christmas period!
Chaplain Celebrates Master's Graduation
Congratulations to Janet Cooke for her winning bid on our giant bar of Toblerone. Janet brought her grandchildren (pictured below) with her to collect the bar from Nightingale House.
Nightingale House Chaplain, Gary Windon, is celebrating the achievement of his Master's degree. Gary is the first person to achieve the MSc in Interdisciplinary Palliative Care from Glyndwr University. He originally set out to do a single module course on Psychosocial Palliative Care, because the Master's degree was only available for clinically or medicallytrained professionals, but he was invited to join the newly developed course. The course has allowed Gary to deeper research the assessment of the spiritual well-being of patients and how to identify when patients are in spiritual distress. Gary says, “the nursing staff have been tremendous in assisting me with my research. With nursing being so heavily evidence based, it has been necessary to look at ways of evidencing patients who are in spiritual distress. This is not about religion, but about how each person perceives hope, meaning and purpose in their life.” Gary has been Chaplain at Nightingale House since 2008. He trained for the Ministry in 1998 following a 20-year career in the IT Industry. His qualifications include a BSc in Computer Science, a BA in Applied Theology and an MSc in Interdisciplinary Palliative Care.
Photo: Gary Windon with nurse Maureen Lamb Gary regularly runs a six week course called Mindful Living, which is specifically aimed at patients and their families but which is based on techniques applicable to everyone. “The purpose of the course”, Gary says, “is for people to become content within themselves and to reduce the stress caused by what they perceive to be happening around them and to them.” “We teach people how to notice what really happens in and around them and to accept and work with that reality.” Tracy Livingstone, Director of Nursing at Nightingale House Hospice, said, “This has been an interesting piece of work for Gary to undertake and I congratulate him on his achievement of his Masters degree. The development of Gary’s role as a five year partnership between the Hospice, the Presbyterian Church of Wales and the Church in Wales was an innovative appointment in 2008 and it is good to see that innovation being continued throughout the lifetime of the role”.

Giving in this way is very simple. Nightingale House has created gift envelopes for you to use at funerals, so that family and friends can contribute.
Mae cyfrannu fel hyn yn syml. Mae Tŷ’r Eos wedi llunio amlenni rhoddion iw defnyddio mewn angladdau fel y gall teuluoedd a ffrindiau gyfrannu.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be a wonderful way to honour the memory of a loved one, whilst supporting an important local charity, such as Nightingale House Hospice. Contact us for more information.
By completing the information on the envelope we are able to claim Gift Aid, which increases the value of the donation by 25%. The family can collect the envelopes themselves and bring them into Nightingale House or, if preferred, the Funeral Director will be happy to organise it on the family’s behalf.
Trwy lenwi’r wybodaeth ar yr amlen gallwn hawlio Cymorth Rhoddion sy’n cynyddur gwerth y cyfraniad o 25%. Gall y teulu gasglu’r amlenni eu hunain â dod a nhw i Tŷ’r Eos neu mae Trefnydd Angladdau yn barod i drefnu hynny ar ran y teulu. Roberts Bros Funeral Directors have endorsed the campaign and have Collection Envelopes within their office in Pentre Broughton (01978 756 997).
Mae Greens’n’Things Florists ym Gresfod hefyd yn cefnogi Tŷ’r Eos ac mae Amlenni Casglu ar gael yn eu siop ar Ffordd Gaer, Gresford (01978 852 618).
Greens’n’Things Florist in Gresford are also supporting Nightingale House and have Collection Envelopes in their shop on Chester Road, Gresford (01978 852 618). We are grateful to Roberts Bros Funeral Directors and Greens’n’Things Florist for endorsing the ‘Donations in Lieu of Flowers’ campaign for Nightingale House and for their continued support.
Here is how some of our other supporters have raised funds in memory of a loved one. Jane Fray from Buckley chose to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice in memory of her mother, Ann McGhee. Jane organised a cabaret evening, which was held on 1 September 2012 and raised £1,241 for Nightingale House.
Rydyn ni’n ddiolchgar i Drefnyddion Angladdau Roberts Bros a Greens’n’Things Florist am gefnogi ymgyrch Tŷ’r Eos ‘Cyfraniadau yn lle Blodau’ ac am eu cefnogaeth gyson.

A gift in your Will No one likes to think about making a Will, however, leaving a gift in your Will to Nightingale House is a valuable way of ensuring that the Hospice is here to help future generations. During 2012, we had a number of legacies left to the Hospice, ranging in value from £100 to £100,000. We can assure you, every penny supports the vital work of Nightingale House for future generations. FORGET ME NOT TRIBUTE FUNDS
Cronfa Deyrnged Glas Y Gors
At Nightingale House Hospice we know that dealing with a loss can be very difficult, particularly on landmark occasions, such as anniversaries and Christmas.
‘Most people have heard of Nightingale
Usually, family members and friends of the deceased want to do something positive and lasting in celebration of their loved one’s life.
They don’t just look after the patients but the whole family and network of friends.
The Nightingale House Hospice ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund Scheme is a very special way to honour the life of a loved one and also help Nightingale House Hospice continue to care for others. To help grow your ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund, we celebrate with you at each milestone.
House but don’t appreciate what goes on there until you need their services.
The support and care is outstanding, words can’t do justice to the wonderful staff and service we received. Since the loss of Viv her family and friends have wanted to raise funds in her memory as a token of their appreciation. Fundraising has included tenpin bowling, white water rafting, tombolas and donations of clothes.
When your ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund reaches £1,500, we will send you a special dedicated rose bush named ‘Precious Memories’ for you to plant. When your ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund reaches £5,000, Nightingale House will engrave two handpicked river stones with your loved one’s name. One will be sent to you, and the other will be placed in our special water feature which will be situated at the front of Nightingale House for you to come and visit. When your ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund reaches £10,000, we will plant a tree in memory of your loved one in a dedicated community garden, in the Forget Me Not Tribute Forest. The tree will be part of an eco-friendly garden designed to educate children, and can be one of five types of tree. An official planting ceremony can also be arranged for you.
The Needham family and friends fully endorse the Forget Me Not Tribute fund and would urge everyone to give their full support.’ Gary Needham Viv passed away at Nightingale House on 11 May 2011. Since then, the family have raised over £9,000 and the fund is still growing.
‘My wonderful, lovely, caring, gorgeous dad — Ian McHarrie — died of terminal cancer on 31 January 2012.
He was cared for so well at Nightingale House Hospice and the staff were wonderful with him and us. I stayed over one night, as did my sister, my mum and my two brothers — all on separate nights so he was never on his own.
The staff made what should have been a horrendously painful and sad experience into a bearable one with lots of special memories. They made my dad comfortable when he was in severe pain and emotional distress, and that is something that I will be eternally grateful to them for. You never, ever, want your loved ones to die of a terminal illness but places like Nightingale House Hospice exist so that your loved ones can die with dignity and have their pains, worries and anxieties taken away from them.
Nightingale House removes the responsibility away so that the last days with your loved ones are special, meaningful and something that you will treasure’.
If your ‘Forget Me Not’ Tribute Fund exceeds £20,000, Nightingale House will have a star named after your loved one, and you will be sent an astronomical chart, with full details of the star and where it is in the solar system. This is a permanent tribute to your loved one and can be kept forever.
Catherine McHarrie
Setting up a Forget Me Not Tribute Fund could not be easier. The fund will be named after your loved one and family, friends and colleagues will then be able to donate to the fund in any way they choose. Whilst a family member might recognize an anniversary or birthday with a donation in lieu of a gift they might have bought, a colleague of the loved one may run a marathon in their memory.
Simply ring Margaret Hollings in the Fundraising Office on 01978 314 292 or email Margaret.hollings@nightingalehouse.co.uk for your starter pack or visit www.mytribute.co.uk to begin your journey online. Every tribute fund tells a different story and yours will be special to you. Once your tribute fund is set up, we will take care of all the paperwork and send you monthly updates on the total in the fund.

Corporate Fundraising
The Corporate Theme for 2013 is ‘Dare to be Different!’ At Nightingale House Hospice, we can dare to be different by offering care using a completely holistic approach to those who need us. This year, we would like to challenge our business community to ‘Dare to be Different’ in raising funds for Nightingale House. We understand that every business is different, with individual needs and goals. With this in mind, we aim to help you achieve your Corporate Social Responsibility requirements and help us as your local charity. The following are examples of ways you can help Nightingale House, as others have helped. 1. Offer a corporate donation. Nice Pak International recently celebrated its 20th year in business, providing 520 jobs to local employees. Managing Director, Michael Staton, decided the best way to mark the occasion would be to link in with the company’s chosen charities — Nightingale House Hospice, Wrexham, and Claire House Hospice on the Wirral. The Company Directors donated £1 a year for every employee who has worked for them. The result was a total of £10,400 to be split between the two local causes, £5,200 each.
2. Endorse a corporate challenge and enter a corporate team into one of our events, such as the Abseil at Trevor Rocks, Tandem Skydive, Wrexham 10k, Drag Walk or Ladies' Midnight Walk. Group participation is becoming hugely popular amongst businesses as it is great for team building and publicity. 3. Offer corporate volunteers to help Nightingale House with particular projects & events. Last year, Mary and Jeannette from ASDA Wrexham (see picture below)joined us at the Ladies' Midnight Walk and cooked a mountain of bacon in the refreshments marquee. Chris Grunwald of Thermseal also gave his services as an electrician and wired up the Light up a Life Christmas Tree.
National company, Interserve, recently donated free training to Nightingale House’s Facilities Department on the theory and practical use of their recently purchased tower scaffold.
4. Offer your services and help save the Hospice money. Nightingale House has a great working relationship with local car dealership Stoneacre, who for three years running have offered a sponsored car to be used by Nightingale House
Dates for your corporate diary Community Fundraising In 2013, Nightingale House Hospice will need to raise £2.6 million in order to provide care for patients completely free of charge. With only approximately 20% funding from statutory sources, we desperately need help from the communities we serve in order to survive. In 2013, if you are able to do ‘something’ for the Hospice, whatever that something may be, your support will be really appreciated.
staff rather than using their own vehicles. Between May 2012 and December 2012 the car has saved the Hospice over £3,000 in travel expenses. Mike Dolan (pictured below with Margaret Hollings) from Stoneacre, says, “It is a pleasure for us to support such a worthy local cause as Nightingale House Hospice. Everywhere you go people talk so highly of the care that is offered at the Hospice and we are proud to be part of the good work that is undertaken there.”
5. Donate a raffle prize that can be used at Hospice events to raise funds. Tom Littler of Cash 4 Gold Wales based on Borras Road, Wrexham donated a bullion of silver for the Hollywood Ball last November and it raised £800 in the Auction.

Here are some of the other ways the community supported us in 2012.
The fantastic Night Staff at Nightingale House hosted a Halloween party at Brymbo Sports and Social Complex. The evening raised £273.00.
Anita Finney arranged a Charity Ball, which raised nearly £3,000.
The ladies from Deeside Darts League chose to support Nightingale House throughout 2012 as well as other local causes and raised £150.
The Rhos Support Group held a Hog Roast in Joan Thomas’ garden, raising over £800. Clays Golf Club held a Captain's Charity Golf Day, raising over £1,750. Tracy Bellis chose to raise funds for Nightingale House with a Zumba class in Mold. She raised a great total of £361.60. Great Work Tracy!
Proudly Supports
Deeside Fire Station held a Firework Display in 2012, raising £200 for the Hospice as well as creating further funds for other local worthy causes. You can see the variety of ways in which you can help and if everyone in the community were to do ‘just something’ it will enable the Hospice to continue to changes lives.

8.30am start, Saturday 6 and 13 April 2013 The Parachute Centre, Tilstock Airfield, Whitchurch £500 minimum sponsorship, which includes the cost of the skydive. £70 deposit required. A Tandem Skydive is the ultimate thrill and a great way to support Nightingale House.
There is little training required, only a good attitude to facing fears and a once in a lifetime goal. Chris Purviss did a Tandem Skydive in 2012 raising over £2,300 for the Hospice, and here is what he had to say about it:
“I am not necessarily a ‘thrill seeker', just the thought that freefalling at 120 miles an hour would be such an adrenalin rush. Having walked up Snowdon twice the previous year for the Hospice, I thought that it would be an idea to go in the opposite direction this year! I’m so pleased and proud that I did the skydive and it is something I will never forget. The feeling is not something you can describe to people who have never experienced it and I would absolutely encourage everyone to try it.” To request a registration form, please call 01978 314 292, or download one from www.nightingalehouse.co.uk

Challenge Activity
In 2012 more than 168 Nightingale House ‘Hospice Heroes’ walked and climbed 58,420 feet, skydived 180,000 feet, cycled 3,896 miles and ran 92,070 miles. Between them they have raised an astonishing £70,750. Here is how some of our 2012 Challenge Heroes achieved this spectacular goal.
Our Running Heroes ran 92,070 miles...
Graham Goldbourne entered the Athens Marathon in November 2012 and raised just short of £2,000. Seven employees of GAP Personnel took on the Conway Half Marathon raising £300 and Carol Jones also raised more than £650 through her participation in the Great North Run. Besides our many runners, Gary James also took part in the Brutal Triathlon and raised over £530.
Our Trekking Heroes climbed 58,420 feet... Last year Tom Edwards decided to do something a little different for his 50th Birthday celebration and decided he and family members would take on Mount Snowdon, North Wales. This was a challenge he had always wanted to do, and so what better time to do it! Tom raised a total of £572.63.
Our Cycling Heroes cycled 3,896 miles... Alex Webb and family have raised an astonishing £8,309.77 by creating a bespoke challenge and cycling from Nightingale House Hospice to Nottingham; conquering over 200 miles of road in memory of their father Paul Webb. Here they are setting off on a summers day in August 2012.
Our Skydiving Heroes have ‘dived’ approximately 180,000 feet...
Chris Purviss braved the skies back in June 2012 raising £2,300 for the Hospice in memory of family friend Vikki Purslow. “Having walked up Snowdon twice the previous year for the Hospice, I thought that it would be an idea to go in the opposite direction this year! I’m so pleased and proud that I did the skydive and it is something I will never forget. The feeling is not something you can describe to people who have never experienced it and I would absolutely encourage everyone to try it”. This year Nightingale House Hospice will be hosting two skydiving dates on Saturday 6 and 13 April. For more details please visit www.nightingalehouse.co.uk.
Tough Mudder Team Challenge
Our thanks to the eight brave challengers from DW Sports Fitness, including local Crusader and Personal Trainer, Rob Massam, who took part in the Tough Mudder Challenge last year in November. The team endured a 12 mile long obstacle course designed by the Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Our heartfelt congratulations go to the whole team for undergoing this amazing challenge for Nightingale House. Tough Mudder is becoming the premier challenge and already half a million brave contestants have signed up to some of the most innovative courses in the world. Please visit www.toughmudder.co.uk to join these inspirational participants and raise funds for Nightingale House. The 2013 North West event takes place in Malpas on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October 2013. To pre-register simply visit the website and then call Eleri on 01978 314 292 (email eleri.wynsmith@nightingalehouse.co.uk) to obtain sponsorship forms and a special Hospice Challenge T-shirt.
Don’t forget .... It doesn’t always have to be a gruelling event to be a challenge. Talk to Eleri about setting up your challenge — 01978 314 292.
The landlord of The Duke of Wellington, Ruabon together with 9 customers also raised £1,350 through participating in ‘Movember’ and growing moustaches for the month of November.
