New Venture for Hospice — Wrexham Food Festival 2012 We are thrilled to announce the launch of this new venture in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council and Northern Marches Cymru. The new Wrexham Food Festival, to be held on 12th and 13th May, is set to be a fantastic event to raise valuable funds for the Hospice, and will include stalls and demonstrations from many different local food and drink businesses. This two day extravaganza will be held at Llwyn Isaf, Wrexham (outside the Guildhall) and will include exciting stalls with all that is best from food and drink, as well as Chef demonstrations from Leigh Myers, Executive Head Chef at Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa; and Graham Tinsley, Head Chef at DeVere Carden Park Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. There will be plenty of ‘tasting’ opportunities with many of our exhibitors. Local businesses exhibiting include Wrexham Lager, Orchard

Pigs, French Flavour, Rosie’s Triple D Cider, Aballu Chocolatier, Seren Foods, Just Tea and Coffee, Clear Black Wine, The Ultimate Fudge Company, Taste of Anglesey (ice cream), Caws Cenarth Cheese, Rustic Chefs, and Llangollen Brewery. Please visit www.wrexhamfoodfest.co.uk for a full list and details of our stallholders. We hope the two day event will be a great addition to the local events calendar, attracting many visitors locally and from outside the area. Parking is readily available throughout the town and the venue is just a 5 minute walk from the central bus station. For further information please contact Laura Parry on 01978 314 292 or visit our website www.wrexhamfoodfest.co.uk.

events and activities, such as our Ladies Midnight Walk and Summer Fair. Do please take a look at our calendar of events — there is something for everyone and I look forward to seeing you at some of our events.

I am delighted to welcome you to the Spring edition of our newsletter which I hope you will enjoy reading. We have tried to bring you a balanced insight into what is happening, in relation to patient care, as well as our fundraising events. As always, your feedback is welcomed. The difficult economic climate shows no signs of improving and we know that it is not only having an impact on the Hospice, but also on you, our supporters. However, during these difficult times we do urge you to continue supporting the Hospice in any way you can. As we approach the warmer months we will be holding many fundraising

Legacies to help Hospice

Our new Legacy Campaign was launched in our January newsletter. The emphasis for this campaign is focused on donors giving consideration to the Hospice once they have taken care of their family. They are asked to think about leaving a gift to us in their will, no matter what the amount. A lot of effort goes into planning fund raising activities, either by holding new events or reinvigorating existing events to attract more people to take part. However, it is not all about raising money. We need to ensure that all monies raised or donated are used efficiently and, therefore, we constantly review ways of saving costs. One area we recently reviewed was our energy costs. Currently, we spend around £70,000 per year on energy bills and we have estimated, with an increase of 10% each year over

At the very core of Nightingale House is the belief that every day makes a difference to the lives of our patients and their families. We also recognise that without the support of our local community our future would be very difficult. In our January edition of the newsletter, we featured the story of one brave patient, Vikki Purslow. Vikki’s story truly demonstrates the importance every day of care and support we provide makes.

Vikki Purslow with her family.

Vikki’s family are supporting our Legacy Campaign because they realise just how important hospice care was to Vikki and how important it is for the Hospice to be here to care for future generations. Legacies are special gifts from one generation to another. By leaving a gift in your will, no matter how small or large, you can help us ensure that we can continue to care for future generations of local people.

Spring 2012 v3.indd 3

the next 10 years, our energy bills would increase to £180,000. Therefore, in an effort to control our ever increasing energy costs, a decision was taken to investigate ways of minimising the impact of these costs. Based on the outcome of these investigations, a recommendation was made and the Board of Trustees accepted to invest in a solar photovoltaic system and take advantage of the government backed scheme to raise income from the ‘Feed in Tariff’ (FiT).

to running either the Hospice for three days, the ambulance for over 2 years or the day care unit for one month. Over a 25 year period of the government scheme, we estimate the system will generate a combined saving on energy bills and income totalling £750,000.

John Savage with Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths.

On 29th March, we were delighted to welcome Lesley Griffiths, Minister for Health and Social Services, to officially switch on our new Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system. The installation of the solar panels will not only reduce our energy costs but will also have a positive impact on our carbon footprint. In real terms, we will be saving approximately £20,000 per year on electricity bills which can go directly back into clinical services and equates

After providing for family and friends, leaving a gift in your will to Nightingale House Hospice is a tremendous and thoughtful way of supporting our work. If you would like more information about leaving a gift in your will to Nightingale House Hospice please contact Caroline Siddall.

Rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy Tracy Livingstone

Director of Nursing and Patient Services

We are all aware that Hospice care is very much about making a difference to the lives of both our patients and their families and, whilst many people are familiar with our In-patient and Day-Care facilities, not everyone is aware of our full range of services. Out-patient services, either within our day unit, our medical out-patient clinics or our physiotherapy and hydrotherapy department, can often be the first point of contact for our patients and families following a referral to the Hospice. Often, after diagnosis of a life limiting illness and referral to the Hospice, one of the first problems patients discuss is their concern regarding their future mobility or independence. This is one aspect of care that the physiotherapy team can help with, not only in terms of advice regarding exercises to maintain muscle tone, strength and general exercise tolerance, but also in managing changes in ability and anticipating problems that may occur so that patients can maintain their independence and quality of life. We liaise closely with other members of the Hospice and community teams to solve problems. As experts in human movement, physiotherapists can detect changes and suggest solutions to problems in a timely manner. Life limiting illnesses present with many problems caused by the illness or treatment. Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists also have skills in managing symptoms such

as breathlessness and fatigue. The Monday Programme runs sessions on these symptoms where advice is given by members of the Rehabilitation Team. Physiotherapy also has a role to play in other aspects of symptom management. Two members of our team are trained to use acupuncture alongside their other physiotherapy skills. Some of our patients have found this particularly useful in terms of managing symptoms, such as nausea or sweats, which may result as a side effect of other treatments. The hydrotherapy pool, located within the physiotherapy department, is another intervention that patients can access. Following an assessment with one of the physiotherapists an exercise plan can be designed around individual needs and monitored by our technical instructor and hydrotherapy pool assistant.

Hydrotherapy pool at Nightingale House

The pool is managed as any swimming pool and subject to the same safety checks. Our pool is maintained at a comfortable 35°C, which helps to ease pain and promote relaxation. Hydrotherapy exercises are aimed at strengthening or maintaining muscle strength, reducing joint stiffness, improving balance and mobility and aiding relaxation. It is easier for us to help patients in the water and patients can move more easily themselves because of the buoyancy. Occasionally, hydrotherapy patients can use the pool with their family, usually young children, as a normal family activity.

N’ad fi’n Angof

As you pass the Hospice in early Spring, you cannot fail to notice the beautiful display of Forget Me Nots flowering in our gardens. These are a reminder of those loved ones we will never forget.

Fel yr ewch heibio’r Hosbis ar ddechrau’r Gwanwyn, ni allwch lai na sylwi ar yr arddangosfa hardd o flodau N’ad fi’n angof yn ein gerddi. Mae’r rhain yn ein hatgoffa am yr anwyliaid nad ânt fyth yn angof.

Inside this newsletter you will find a dedication form for our summer Forget Me Not Appeal. Once completed, please return your form to the Hospice, along with your donation. We will display your dedication on our memory wall during July and August.

Gyda’r llythyr newyddion hwn, ceir ffurflen gyflwyno ar gyfer ein Hapêl N’ad Fi’n Angof. Ar ôl i chi ei llenwi, dychwelwch y ffurflen, os gwelwch yn dda, i’r Hosbis, gyda’ch cyfraniad. Byddwn yn arddangos eich cyflwyniad ar ein wal goffa yn ystod Gorffennaf ac Awst.

Charity of the Year Very often, companies will decide to support one charity for their financial year. This gives the organisation and its employees an opportunity to develop a relationship with their chosen charity allowing staff to have a much greater involvement. Nominating a chosen charity can lead to a more professional approach to company fundraising, generating income for a worthy cause. Staff motivation, will be increased, particularly if they have participated in the choice of charity they are fundraising for. By choosing Nightingale House Hospice as your charity of the year, you benefit from all the opportunities above, as well as gaining staff involvement by giving them a voice in choosing which charity to support. Nightingale News, Spring 2012

Could you be a 2012 Hospice Hero? Run, cycle, walk, trek or jump — whatever you do, do it for your local Hospice. We have put together a calendar of events for you, that you could take part in up until the end of 2012.

Runners Diary

Cycling Diary

Walkers Diary

There are a number of 10k’s, half marathons and marathons taking place locally, nationally and internationally that you could take part in.

Nightingale House Hospice is proud to be partners of the Etape Cymru 2012. Last year, more than 40 cyclists took part in the gruelling 100 mile challenge climbing an ascent of more than 9000 feet and raised an incredible £10,000 for the Hospice.

Walking is one of the most popular ways in Britain to keep fit. It’s recommended that people walk for half an hour three times a week for general health and well being.

Chester Half Marathon, Sunday 13 May 2012. Join Hospice Hero’s Aled, Dean, Colin, Paul, Kerry, Tom, Richard, Andy & Paul. www.activeleisureevents.co.uk/half-marathon.

Etape Cymru, Sunday 9 September 2012.

Whilst the Hospice organises a number of walking events such as the Drag Walk and the Ladies Midnight Walk, there are several other ways you can raise money by putting on your walking boots and going off track.

Etape Eryri, Sunday 17 June 2012. Snowdonia Sportive. Celebrate the Queens Jubilee this June by taking in the beautiful surroundings of Britain — and more specifically Snowdonia, Wales.

Arrange your own event, such as climbing Moel Famau, Snowdon, or walking from Wrexham to Chester or other route.

Hospice Heroes Roundup We never cease to be amazed at the Challenges our Heroes undertake. We would like to thank everyone who has taken up a Challenge on our behalf. Last year, local brothers Richard and Simon Moulton and family friend Andy Pierce, joined more than 40 other cyclists taking part in the Etape Cymru, which raised £10,000 for Nightingale House Hospice. The trio were determined to complete this challenge for a very specific reason. Derek Moulton, the father of Richard and Simon sadly passed away, aged 61, on the evening before the ride after a short battle with cancer. ‘We had promised dad that we would complete the ride regardless of the circumstances and in his memory we were determined to go through with it. Going ahead with the ride and raising funds for the Hospice seemed the right thing to do and with the great support from Andy together with family members throughout the day we completed the route with an overwhelming sense of achievement’ said Richard and Simon.
