Together, we are Hospice Care!
Here at Nightingale House, we know how lucky we are to have the support of our army of volunteers. Without your support it would be impossible to maintain the services we offer to both our patients and their families - in fact it would be impossible to run the Hospice! So, on behalf of everyone at Nightingale House, thank you for the support you give us and the care you take of us!
Celebrating success!
This June we held our third Volunteer Recognition Awards where we celebrated and recognised the contribution made by 85 volunteers to the running of the Hospice. Within that number three volunteers from our Cefn Mawr Shop were recognized for their continuous week by week involvement for the past 25 years. This is, I am sure you will agree, a fantastic achievement. We would like to take the opportunity to thank one of those long serving volunteers Betty Parrott, who celebrated over two decades of volunteering in our Cefn Mawr Shop and her 90th Birthday during our Community Week. Betty sadly passed away very recently and we know she will be sadly missed by both her friends, family and colleagues alike.
Can your organisation help? Do you need help in fulfilling your corporate social responsibility? We can help! We are looking for local companies and organisations to help support us within the Hospice. We have many jobs that teams of volunteers can come in and tackle for one or two days – this not only supports us but has many benefits for the organisation, from team building to knowing you are supporting your local community. Amongst our greatest supporters are Marks and Spencer whose team revamped our Family Room here at the Hospice, the Department of Wages and Pensions and Thomson Reuters who between them have given many days to our Distribution Centre sorting through the generous donations we are given. As Mark Roberts, Operations Director Thomson Reuters, says "It was an absolute pleasure to help out and we all really enjoyed it. I’m glad that we were able to help make a difference and I can confirm that we will have volunteers lined up to help again in the future."
There goes summer! Caffi Cwtch needs you! Wow, what a season of Summer Events we have had! Ride Out in May which saw 300 bikes take to the hills of Snowdonia; The Wrexham Food and Drink Festival which saw 4000 people descend on Llwyn Isaf; the Summer Fair which returned to the Hospice grounds and raised an amazing £3000 on a very soggy Saturday in June; and the pinnacle of the season, the eleventh Ladies Midnight Walk which saw 720 ladies hit the streets of Wrexham pledging an amazing £55,000 on the night. All these great events have one thing in common - YOU, our volunteers ! Without your support, these and many other events simply would not go ahead.
From September 2017, our wonderful and very popular Café Cwtch will open on a Saturday due to popular demand. Thanks to some of our volunteers and our staff, this popular Café has had over 11,000 transactions – this is incredible and our thanks go to everyone involved. With new shops, new café and new development plans, the future is very bright and your Hospice can only do this with the support of our loyal and caring volunteers – YOU!
Volunteer Vacancies!
Even the smallest volunteering act makes our Hospice strong and resilient. There is quite literally a job for everyone, from furniture upcycling and ebay enthusiasts to sales adviser and donation sorters. Current vacancies include: • Drivers and Drivers Mates for our Distribution Centre • Donation sorters • PAT Testers • Ebay enthusiasts • Bicycle Refurbishers • Media buffs • Hairdressers • Complementary therapists • Craft enthusiasts • Shop volunteers
If you have a few hours free either in the week or at weekends, want to make friends and help to raise money for the Hospice, please pick up the phone and give Jo Kearns a call on 01978 314292 or email Jo.Kearns@Nightingalehouse.co.uk for an up to date list of our Winter and Christmas Fundraising events.

Steve Parry - Chief Executive The focus of the Hospice is to provide care and support where it is needed the most and we continue to do this both within the Hospice and also in the wider community. Our theme for 2017 has been “Together we are Hospice Care” and you will see in this edition of the newsletter a story of a wedding held here at the Hospice recently that shows just how staff, supporters and the local community came together to ensure we were able to provide a very special day for one particular family. ‘Together we are Hospice Care’ is both poignant and extremely relevant. Nightingale House is right at the heart of the community it serves and it is a community that provides unerring support; be it through their incredible fundraising or volunteering. It is remarkable how the community continues to rise to the challenges faced by the Hospice and this is something that must never be taken for granted. There are many examples of the Hospice working collaboratively with other care providers to support patients and their families and
this is key to establishing and delivering joined up care packages in the future. We must continue to strive to find new avenues for care and support to be delivered to a wider audience within a cost effective and sustainable manner. I am pleased to be able to tell you that our plans for the provision of a new clinical build at the Hospice have been submitted to the Welsh Government and at the time of writing, we await their response to our bid for their support towards the cost of the new build. The new facilities, subject to planning permission being granted, will improve patient dignity and privacy by the provision of single occupancy inpatient rooms and will also provide an opportunity to extend our community care provision and increase our rehabilitation services.
Steve Parry Chief Executive
Will Week: 9th October - 13th October 2017 At Nightingale House Hospice we understand that life can be unpredictable and changes in circumstances can often leave a family unsure of the future at a time when they are least able to handle it. Changes in your current life situation – for example the arrival of children, a divorce or bereavement – can mean looking again at your Will and if necessary making changes. Some of you may not have made a Will and although this can sometimes be the last thing on your mind, it is often an opportunity to think about securing your loved ones’ future. Taking part in the Nightingale House Hospice Will Week campaign is a way of giving yourself peace of mind by setting your affairs in order, protecting those you love and respect and at the same time support the work of the Hospice. Last year over 50 people wrote a Will during Will Week 2016 and raised nearly
£7,000 for the Hospice. This keeps our ambulance, which brings people into day care on the road for 12 months, a vital service that supports patients and their families for respite. Your support of the 2017 Will Week campaign will ensure that this much-needed service can continue to be an integral part of the Patient and Family Support service that Nightingale House offers. We are truly grateful to all of the solicitors below who have kindly agreed to waive their fee for writing a basic single or double Will in return for a donation to the Hospice. By writing your Will during Will Week, you will ensure that if the unthinkable happens, your loved ones will be taken care of. To make an appointment during Will Week, please contact any of our supporting Solicitors listed quoting Will Week 2017 or visit the website: www.nightingalehouse.co.uk.

M&S makeover for family guest room In true DIY SOS style, staff from Marks and Spencers at Eagles Meadow workers have come to the rescue of a special room in need of a makeover on our in-patient ward. They got their scrapers and paint brushes out and set about re-decorating the guest room, used by patients’ relatives to stay close to their loved one overnight. Some tender loving care was called for to modernise and refresh the room and M&S did just that as part of a scheme called ‘Making Every Moment Special in the Community’, through which individual stores choose a charity to support. They redecorated the room including cleaning the carpet and updating the bathroom, they completed the new look with new fitted blinds, curtains
and bedding, one member of the team has even written a poem and framed it.
daughter too. The guest room was a very welcome, peaceful haven which helped us all.
M&S Food Section Manager Katie Leighton said: “We were given £500 by the company to do something that would have a long-lasting benefit and after talking things over at the hospice, we felt this was the ideal project.”
“Trying to sleep on a chair in Jeff’s room meant that there were times we were disturbing each other. We both needed to get some rest and it was somewhere I could shut the door and feel safe, knowing Jeff was being looked after. I was glad of a comfortable bed, a shower and the little kitchen. There were lots of lovely little touches, like a beautiful poem on the window ledge. Nightingale House really is an amazing place and cared for us all, from cooking my daughter’s favourite meal after school to looking after my mum when she was there to support us.”
One of the first family members to use the new-look guest room was Sue Vaughan whose husband Jeff spent 13 weeks as an in-patient here at the Hospice. Sue said: “It was such a difficult and exhausting time and I was trying to juggle being a mum to our nine year old
Hospice beyond the building! As a hospice we have always been aware that within the walls of our building here on Chester Road there is a limit to the support we can practically deliver. We are also aware that there is a great resource out in our local communities that could be mobilised to reduce the vulnerability that people can often feel when they are at home if they are isolated due to ill-health. This year we have been able to reach more people in our community through a volunteer led befriending service. This doesn’t replace statutory health or social care services but compliments it through regular visit from a compassionate communities volunteer. When we are setting up a new group, we look for champions to coordinate and recruit volunteers, before matching the individuals referred to a volunteer befriender. Each volunteer receives a DBS and induction
A tribute to Maureen
For many years, the hair and beauty salon at Nightingale House has provided much needed therapy in the form of hairdressing and beauty treatments for patients and their families. The Salon is staffed entirely by volunteers who give up their valuable days off from their busy professional working lives to provide this service. A while ago, the Mold Sugar Craft Group made a generous donation to provide us with a new adjustable wash basin.
One of the patients who benefited from our hair and beauty services was Maureen Jones, a lady who had spent practically all of her working life in the beauty industry. Maureen knew only too well, how important this personal service was to a person’s well-being. Following some time as a patient in both our day unit and in-patient unit Maureen decided to donate money to upgrade the salon, making it a light, airy and more welcoming environment.
The salon re-launch took place in July, unfortunately Maureen was not able to be there due to her health issues so a few days later, one of the team took some photographs of the re-vamped Salon to show her. We are all pleased Maureen had the chance to see the photographs because a few days later, she died at home. Our thoughts go out to Hefin, her husband and her family. Her kindness and generosity will not be forgotten.
training about the role and its purpose along with guidance on boundaries, communication skills and training in safeguarding before being matched to an individual identified by the local health and social service teams for example a GP or district nurse. Our Llandderfel and Llangollen groups are well established with a new group growing in Coedpoeth we have also had preliminary discussions to establish a group in Gwersyllt before the end of the year. In addition to our befriending groups we are also looking at a new nutritional befriender service for patients discharged from our in-patient unit. A befriender will collect a meal from Caffi Cwtch and deliver it to the patients’ own home for an initial period following discharge until they are feeling able and organised to deal with shopping and cooking.

Leave a Lasting Legacy Many of our loyal supporters include a gift in their will to Nightingale House Hospice because they have experienced the comfort the Hospice brought to someone they love—a parent, a sibling, a child or partner. When you support us today, you make it possible for us to reach out to provide compassionate palliative services to patients with life-limiting illnesses, their families and caregivers. But when you plan a gift to Nightingale House Hospice in your will or financial plans, you will help ensure that our programmes for care will be here for many generations to come.
We understand that you will want to provide for those people closest to you, but would ask you to consider leaving a gift in your Will to the Hospice, no matter what the amount; it will be treasured by hundreds of families in the future. A gift no matter the amount be it £500, £5,000, £50,000 or greater will help us to continue our work.
Celebration Giving
“Help one another; there’s no time like the present and no present like the time” - when James Durst said these words, he couldn’t have known how apt these words could be for the idea of Celebration Giving. A Celebration Fund is a perfect alternative for any celebration you have in mind – wedding, anniversary, retirement or birthday. Personalising your own Celebration Fund page via www.justgiving.com is an easy way to capture your donations and allows you to invite family and friend to make a donation to help you celebrate and to support the work of Nightingale House Hospice. Alternatively, if you’d rather not set up a Celebration Fund page, you can collect the donations yourself and bring them into the Hospice personally. We can also provide you with collection tins, small money cubes, and special donation envelopes to collect your guests donations. Ever since Margaret Scragg's brother, Mervyn Phillips, was chairman of our board of trustees, Margaret has sent an annual cheque for Nightingale House as his Christmas gift from her. This Summer, as part of her diamond wedding celebration, Margaret and her husband Brian invited family and friends to give a donation in lieu of presents and they have shared gifts between supported charities. From this, Nightingale House has been pleased to receive a cheque for £200 from Margaret.

Remember a loved one this Christmas
The Nightingale House Hospice Light up a Life celebration allows us all a chance to remember and reflect on the lives of loved ones we have lost. To help these memories live on and to allow families and friends to come together and celebrate the lives of people who they have loved and lost, Nightingale House Hospice offer a Light up a Life event in various locations which are highlighted below. Following a service in the grounds of the Hospice, the Tree of Lights will be illuminated and the lights will shine on until 5th January. The names of your loved ones will be entered into the 'Book of Honour' which can be viewed on the evening and then afterwards in the Hospice reception throughout the year. The evening’s programme of reflections and seasonal carols is preceded by a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. The events are open to anyone, not just people whose loved one was cared at Nightingale House. By offering a donation to help fund the work of the Hospice, you can not only remember those wonderful people but help to ensure that the services offered at Nightingale House continue well into the future. You can offer a donation using the leaflet enclosed with the newsletter or online at www.treeoflights.co.uk. We do hope that we will see you and have the chance to talk with you about the work that goes on at this special place but even if you can’t attend, you will be able to see your light on the Christmas Tree as you drive or walk past. Caffi Cwtch will be open until 7.30pm on the evening of the service for hot drinks and snacks.
A favour is a blessing in disguise A way of saying ‘thank-you’ to your guests is by giving them a ‘thank you’ favour. Our favours can be used at any celebration event of your choosing. Why not give your guests an entry into the Hospice Lottery draw for a Friday of your choosing. At £2.50 per person, they come in a presentation folder including a gift certificate. Or, you may wish to present your guests with a keepsake pin at £1.50 per person. Each favour is tailored to your own specifications and personalised for your special day. All we require is a list of your guests and the date of your celebration event (all participants must be aged 16 or above – we can provide a small bear for younger children).

In the shops URG E N T STO CK A PP E A L
We are very grateful to our supporters who bring us their unwanted goods for us to sell in our shops. Without them all we would have are empty shelves. But we are always looking for good quality clothing, household and electrical items as well as furniture to fill our shops. If you are downsizing, decluttering or clearing out the garage or garden shed then please drop off the items you are finished with at one of our shops. We can arrange to pick up larger items of furniture. For more details please call 01978 262589.
Donating your unwanted items or shopping at one of our charity shops is a fantastic way of supporting the Hospice. This makes a significant contribution towards the running of the Hospice and supports patient care. We would like to thank everyone who has donated their unwanted clothes, furniture or electrical goods to us and all those who have shopped with us for their support.
Cycles Recycled One of the most popular items for sale in our shops are recycled bikes. All the bikes that we sell are thoroughly checked and serviced in our workshop by our experienced volunteers. They use a 9 point checklist to ensure that the bikes we sell are roadworthy and in good condition. We replace any worn brake pads and tyres. This means that you can buy a second-hand bicycle from us with peace of mind. We are always looking for bikes, both adult and children sizes, to sell. Road and mountain bikes are always popular with our customers while vintage and retro cycles are snapped up quickly. Check out your shed or garage and if you have a bike that you no longer require please drop it off at one of our shops. You don't have to worry about condition as we will strip any bikes which are not roadworthy and use them for spares.
Your donations make the difference Could you arrange a donation day at your place of work, school or church group? We can come along and pick up those donations at the end of the day. For further details or to arrange a donation day please call John on 01978 314292.
Our top tips for charity shopping •
Find out which day they receive new stock, and visit on that day
•
Get to know the volunteers and let them know what you are looking for
•
Visit frequently the stock changes much more quickly than a High Street store
•
If you like it buy it, because someone else will like it too and once it has gone, it's gone!
Don't forget to Gift Aid your donations to us if you are a UK taxpayer. It means that we are able to claim an additional 25% on top of the price that we sell your items for!
New Oswestry Shop On Wednesday 23rd August 2017 we opened our latest charity shop on Cross Street Oswestry. We now have 12 shops covering Wrexham, Flintshire and north Shropshire as well as our Reuse shop at the Bryn Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Wrexham.
Shopfitting a new shop that is attractive to customers and shows off the stock to its best can be expensive. We are very grateful to Kronospan, Chirk, who very kindly donated the laminate flooring for the new store and to Mainetti UK, based in Wrexham, who supplied all the hangers as well as new stock for the shop. We look forward to welcoming you at the Oswestry shop where we have an exciting range of clothing, household goods and furniture. Due to demand from our customers we have recently introduced a new range of single and double divan sets which can be ordered from any of our shops including Oswestry.

With your help we made a dream come true Whilst most couples spend months or years planning their wedding, Edgaras `Edgar’ Savinas and his partner Vitalija Savine only had the shortest of time. After nine years together and as parents to a lively two year old, Edgar (29) and Vitalija (27), planned a long and happy future. “Things were going great until we had the terrible news last year that Edgar had pancreatic cancer,” says Vitalija. “He had chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other trial treatments but the cancer had spread, and after 12 months of fighting the doctors told us they could do no more. It was the hardest thing we have ever had to hear. A day later Edgar asked me to marry him, something we had both always wanted. With his health deteriorating we had only a short time to arrange things but with the help of friends, family and Nightingale House, after just one week we were married at the Hospice. Sadly Edgar passed away in his sleep just the next day. “The staff at Nightingale House were amazing and like a family to us. They pulled out all the stops and with the help of the local community made our dream of a special wedding day come true. It was truly beautiful. Even under the most difficult of circumstances, Vita was like any young bride with a vision of her wedding day, her colour scheme and so much more. The sun shone for the wedding and Ed and Vita were joined by family and friends in the hospice garden after their wedding blessing. When Ed returned to the ward after the Reception, which was held in our Caffi Cwtch, he was given a guard of honour down the corridor by his friends and colleagues and still had the energy at the end of the afternoon to raise his arms to salute them. The response from members of the public, our volunteers and staff, was overwhelming. We had most things in place, including many donations of goods and services, but just needed help with paying for the rings. Within an hour of sending out a Facebook message we had over £800 which we were able to give to the family to support them not only on the wedding day but in the days that followed. Thank you for your support.
Join our Trek China Team Following a successful information evening about our exciting once in a lifetime opportunity to walk part of the Great Wall of China, we already have 12 volunteers confirmed on the Trek – why not join us? We are holding a further information evening on Wednesday 18th October in Caffie Cwtch at 6.30pm. Come and join us for Chinese nibbles and a chance to hear all about this exciting trip and have your questions answered. “You have not lived if you have not been to the Great Wall”, or so the Chinese saying goes, and it’s not surprising why! The Great Wall of China has been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Stretching for 6,000km, it zig zags its way across China, snaking across mountains and through valleys. Our trek will include conquering the 1,000 steps up to the wall at Mutianyu – culminating with the ascent of the 'Heavenly Ladder'.
This is a fantastic five day trek with the chance to place your own brick in a section of the wall. In this way you can ensure that your imprint is left on the wall forever. You can include a trinket in memory of a loved one, or just something of your own to mark the occasion. Will my hotel have a 'proper' toilet and will it have hot water? Do I have to be super fit to do the challenge? How many miles do we walk each day? Do I need to carry all of my things in a back pack every day?
Interested? Want to know more? Join us on Wednesday 18th October!
To register your interest and for further information, please contact Christine Dukes on 01978 314 292.
Remembering Norman Land It was with great sadness we learnt of the death of Norman Land who had been a long standing member of the board of trustees, as well as Chair, for a number of years. He was passionate about Nightingale House Hospice and we still use his phrase “Every penny counts.” Our best wishes go to Marilyn and his family who always supported Norman with his hard work for us. Even after he retired from the Board he continued to help and support us where he could. His support will be missed by staff and volunteers alike.
Every Penny Counts! Spare change soon mounts up with our home money cubes and collection tins. Many of you are already supporting in this way. Help us turn your pennies into pounds for the Hospice so we can continue our vital work.
Make your donations go further: HMRC operates a scheme called Gift Aid that allows charities to claim the basic rate tax on every pound donated. So if you donated £100 to Nightingale House, it means that you could actually be giving us £125. Giving under Gift Aid means that so much more money can be raised at no extra cost to our donors.

(and people of North East Wales) The Nightingale House team have been very, very good this year. As you know, it’s the Hospice’s annual Christmas Fair on 11th November and we would love a few things to help the event raise more money for patient care. Our Hospice elves are busy looking for some stallholders including: Homemade crafts, clothes, candles, food, baking, Jewellery etc. (Please call 01978 314292). Alternatively If you can also help us out by donating any of the following, it would be hugely appreciated: • Glass jars - clean, empty and ideally without labels/stickers on. • Bottles - alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, food stuffs, bottled toiletries, sports drink bottles; all full and unopened. • Good quality items we could use in a raffle. • Good quality wicker baskets - smaller ones which are about the size of a box of tissues, or larger ones like shopping baskets or laundry basket. • Good quality Christmas decorations, still in their packaging to be sold on a stall (before 4th November). • Second hand Christmas decorations, to be used for decorating the venue (before 10th November). • Knitted items - baby clothes, woolly hats, scarves, gloves etc (before 4th November). • Craft items, but not including homemade cards (before 4th November). If you do have any of the above that you are able to donate, you can drop them off at the Hospice. For those not able to come down the chimney, the main entrance will be acceptable. (Please note that for some items, we have specified a certain date or date range to drop these off. This is to ensure they are utilised in the best way possible). Thank you very much!
Thank you! We would like to say a big thank you to all of you for your kind help and donations. Unfortunately we cannot mention everybody in this newsletter as there is simply not enough space, but we do appreciate your generosity and hope you continue to support us. Every penny counts and we need your help to continue supplying specialist palliative care at the Hospice. Without you we would not be here.
Luke McDoNald, Area Fundraiser (Aged 27 and a half)
