History and memory are like tributaries of the same stream – the significance of each playing out in the eye of the beholder. In the realm of vintage R&B, it has long been assumed that Portland, Oregon was a towny wayside obscured by Seattle’s shadow. Meanwhile, a host of creatives had set to work developing an insular brand of jazz-tinged funk celebrated among locals. Decades later, we hear a detailed account from PDX musician & man about town, Calvin Walker.
