Innerview There are many things to appreciate about living in the Caribbean and particularly on Aruba. Given our moniker, “One Happy Island,” I would like to explain what that really means to me. First, let me preface my personal observations by simply stating that the world is in a migration mess right now. Accepting other cultures seems to have hit many roadblocks almost everywhere. The truth is we are all in this together. We are one planet of human beings, which brings me full circle as to Aruba’s gift of gifts. Aruba is an incredibly multicultural society with more than 70 cultures living quite harmoniously here. Aruba’s population’s ability to speak a minimum of four languages – saying hello to you
each morning in your language – is very much a necessary and integral part of their daily custom. Most importantly, and for whatever reason, we are one of the few Caribbean destinations blessed with such a safe, peaceful, and tranquil society. A task not easy to maintain but seemingly built into the island’s DNA and shared among all who come here no matter whether to live or to visit. The common remark is how chill or how trustingly laid-back our island is. Regardless of how well traveled you are, I think it’s fair to say that Aruba has lived up to its slogan. It has demonstrated this innate ability to be extremely welcoming and somewhat magical as to allow you a kind of “hitting the refresh button” on your life. All that negative charge will disappear the minute you enter Aruba’s airspace or its clear turquoise waters. Aruba, now this is a place to vacation. Welcome one and all,

Archaeological museum reopens After a two-year closure for maintenance, the National Archaeological Museum of Aruba has now officially reopened to the public in the heart of downtown Oranjestad. Discover Downtown by Dianna Beaufort Downtown Aruba has everything. Chic boutiques, architectural gems, exciting shopping malls, quaint restaurants, hip nightclubs, and an ambience unmatched anywhere else on the island. Add some history to your next outing by heading downtown and following our tour. Start at Wilhelmina Park
Queen Wilhelmina was the longest-reigning Dutch monarch, ruling the Netherlands from 1898 to 1948. Wilhelmina Park, with its marble statue of Queen Wilhelmina amidst tropical gardens, was laid out in her honor in 1955. There is also a lovely statue of Anne Frank here, the base of which is inscribed with a very moving quote from her book. Just outside this waterfront park and to the left of Oranjestraat, are Aruba’s parliament buildings, built after the island gained Status Aparte (semi-independence) in 1986. Looking west you’ll see Renaissance Marketplace and the harbor beyond. This one-story complex has a wide variety of shops and restaurants selling beachwear, jewelry, and gifts, and serving everything from sushi to lattes. Walk north up Oranjestraat (heading inland)
Aruba’s first lighthouse, called Willem III Tower, was built in 1868. Time stands still not only on its clock, but also in the
Historical Museum behind, where old photographs of the island are on display. The museum is housed in Fort Zoutman, construction of which began in 1796 to defend Paarden Bay. With fortress walls only 10 feet high, it seems improbable that it could withstand attack, but it did, against the English in 1799. Soon after, houses were built in its line of fire as Oranjestad began to grow. Nowadays, the Bon Bini Festival, with dancing, arts and crafts stands, and local food, is held here every Tuesday evening. Continue up Oranjestraat to Wilhelminastraat
The red building to the left is the Hotel Colombia, considered the first hotel on Aruba. Mr. Nadi Henriquez, who later set up the first open-air cinema, built it in 1918. Connected to it is the striking Eloy Arends Manor on Wilhelminastraat, Oranjestad’s most authentic street. One of Aruba’s most regal homes, it is now the Town Hall and is often used for weddings. Local scene was an Aruban physician and he built the home for his fiancée, Maria Laclé. During their engagement from 1922 to 1925 (it takes some time to build a mansion!), Ms. Laclé was obliged to avoid the neighborhood. The doctor’s good sisters furnished the house during their honeymoon. No accounts were left of how the bride felt about her in-laws’ choice of décor! Explore further east on Wilhelminastraat
Several buildings along Wilhelminastraat are, at their core, traditional cunucu, or country houses. These characteristic Aruban houses are low with a sloping roof rising to a saddle roof in the center. They were usually built facing the wind for Protestant Church

natural air conditioning and plastered in ground coral. The building at number 27 is the oldest, dating to 1877. Most cunucu front patios have become shops and eateries, but the farther east you walk, the more authentic the houses. Return and head west on Wilhelminastraat
The oldest surviving church on Aruba is the Protestant Church built in 1846, between Schoolstraat and Rifstraat. The building stones of the church come from the house that previously occupied the lot. Called the“Church on the Bay”because of its visibility from Paarden Bay, it displays beautiful woodwork inside and is still used for special occasions. Renaissance Marketplace and marina

Plaza Daniel Leo is Oranjestad’s most picturesque square with its colonial-style buildings. The decorative Dutch gables were inspired by those on Amsterdam’s canals, but are splashed with pastel Caribbean colors. Many of these now contain tony boutiques and duty-free shops. Walk to the north end of the square
Caya G.F. Betico Croes or Mainstreet runs from the square to the east. Still more shops line this lively street, selling everything from cameras to clothing and jewelry. Heading in the other direction is Schelpstraat. The restored Ecury Complex, a historic trading house at number 42, is now home to the National Archaeological Museum of Aruba. The collection of buildings includes two cunucu houses from 1867 and 1870. Inside the museum, a 4,000-year-old skull, shell jewelry, and ceramic figurines guide you through Aruba’s indigenous heritage. Schelpstraat has some impressive, restored cunucu houses. The grand Henriquez House (number 36-38), with its extra story, dormers, and terracotta roof tiles imported from Holland, is a more typically urban version of the cunucu.

Walk down towards Havenstraat and follow it back towards the center of town
Nearby Havenstraat also boasts its share of historic homes, as well as shopping and fine dining. If shopping is what you’re after, take some time to explore Royal Plaza Mall and Renaissance Mall both of which overlook the yacht basin and cruise ship terminal.

Treasure Coins of the Caribbean By Bernard Reller, American Numismatic Association R-159127
Shortly after Christopher Columbus “discovered” the New World in 1492, Spanish conquistadores arrived to conquer and subjugate the indigenous peoples of present-day Mexico, Central and South America and exploit the vast riches of silver and gold found there. They soon established mines and mints to refine metal and strike coins for trading in the colonies and to finance the ever-expanding debt of the Spanish Monarchy in Europe. The wealth and produce of the New World was shipped to Spain via convoys of sailing ships guarded by heavily armed galleons, which carried most of the silver and gold. Many of these convoys would fall victim to violent hurricanes and marauding pirates. Early coins carried on one side an image of pillars and waves. The other side carried a simple shield bearing lions and castles. Minting in the colonies continued until 1825. For 300 years, Spanish coins served as the currency for much of the world including the early North American Colonies. The Spanish eight real coin or famous “piece of eight” was based on the avoirdupois ounce of approximately 28 grams. The gold “doubloon” later came to apply to other denominations of gold coins. The Spanish “piece of eight” ultimately gave rise to the United States dollar. Over the years, most of this crude Spanish coinage found its way into the melting pots of Europe and the world, but today treasure hunters and salvage divers, using modern equipment, are recovering long-lost caches of treasure, much of them in the waters of the Caribbean. Currently around the Caribbean, shipwreck treasure in the form of gold and silver jewelry is frequently worn by salvage divers, sailors, adventurers… and of course by their women. The trend harkens back to those swashbuckling days… when pirates roamed the Spanish Main… and life was lived on “the edge.”

DUTY-FREE INFO UNITED STATES US citizens, regardless of age, who have been out of the country for a minimum of 48 hours and who have not used their respective duty-free allowance within 30 days are entitled to an $800 duty-free tax exemption. Family members who live in the same home and return together can pool their exemptions, meaning a couple with two children can bring home $3,200 worth of articles, duty-free. Diamonds Are Forever by Giancarlo La Giorgia Whether sitting pretty atop a ring, dangling from a pendant earring, or encrusted into a designer watch, a twinkling diamond commands attention. Certainly, everyone knows that nothing but a diamond ring will do when pledging eternal love to your sweetheart. So, how did our romance with this precious stone begin?
Remarkably, diamonds are a form of carbon, one of the most abundant substances on the planet. It takes about a billion years of intense heat and pressure deep below the earth’s crust for a lump of graphite – carbon’s most common form, best known as the “lead” in pencils – to form into the world’s hardest natural substance. In fact, the only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond, which is why it is so sought-after as an industrial abrasive. The clear, octahedral (double pyramidshaped) crystal was first discovered at least 3,000 years ago in India, where its unique beauty and imperviousness made it revered as a talisman against evil and harm. Interestingly, although its mines were exhausted long ago, India has stayed the world leader in diamond cutting and polishing, handling over 90 percent of rough stones. Diamonds as a symbol of romantic devotion go back to the European nobility of the Middle Ages, when they were left in their natural form and valued less for
their beauty than as uncommonly potent love charms. Legend had it that Cupid’s arrows were tipped with the super-tough mineral because it could pierce even the hardest heart – its name in English comes from the Greek adàmas, which means “unbreakable.”

Jewelry Over time, jewelers realized that precise cutting, or faceting, was required to fully capitalize on the diamond’s amazing optical qualities. Indeed, it is considered the most important of the four “Cs” used to rate a diamond’s quality, the others being carat weight, equal to 200 milligrams; color, ranging from colorless to light yellow (for white diamonds); and clarity, which varies from flawless to “included,” or blemished. Together, these determine the fifth “C,” cost. Round brilliant cut diamond
Faceting is what produces a diamond’s “fire,” (the refraction of light into its component colors), its brilliance (the reflection of light back to the eye of the viewer), and its scintillation (the sparkling effect when a diamond is turned in the light). Gem cutters slowly developed increasingly complex arrays of facets, culminating in 1919 with the 58-facet round brilliant cut, created by Belgian-born Marcel Tolkowsky who designed a set of “ideal” diamond proportions according to mathematical principles. Other “ideal” round brilliant cuts that factor in optical properties have been designed since then, but Tolkowsky’s remains the benchmark. Unlike fancy cuts, there are standardized grades for the round brilliant cut among all the major diamond certification bodies: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD), and American Gem Society (AGS). Gem cutters also like the shape because it allows them to cut two diamonds – one big and one small – out of a single, regularly shaped rough stone. The most popular fancy cut is the princess, a square or slightly rectangular shape that can feature as many as 144 facets. Since diamonds naturally have four corners, this cut preserves about 80 percent of the original rough. As a result, princess-cut diamonds are less expensive than round brilliant-cut diamonds of the same carat weight. In 2005, the AGS launched a standardized system for grading princess-cut diamonds, the first and only one of its kind.
There are countless other fancy cuts, many of them proprietary, such as Bez Ambar’s modified princess Quadrillion, Christopher Designs’ modified round brilliant Crisscut, or Trillion Diamond Co.’s triangular Trielle. Most of these are brilliant-cut diamonds, which emphasize a diamond’s reflective properties (and can better hide inclusions), while step-cut diamonds (think of an emerald) emphasize a diamond’s clarity and color. The Asscher cut, a square with cut-off corners, is a step cut first popularized in the Art Deco era and is making a comeback. There are slender shapes, such as the marquise (football) and baguette (rectangular) cuts, as well as round shapes like the cushion (oval) and pear (teardrop). The choices are endless, which is why a good jeweler is indispensable. They will offer suggestions about the many different pieces or loose diamonds, narrowing the choice down to what best suits the occasion and the customer. In the end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if a diamond catches your eye, you’ve found a partner for life. After all, diamonds are forever.

One Happy Snorkeler by Michael DeFreitas Snorkeling always tops my list of things to do on Aruba. Shallow, calm, clear azure waters and mesmerizing underwater sights await.
The west and southwest coasts offer an almost limitless assortment of snorkeling opportunities for everyone. You can drift three feet above shallow reefs, dive down 20 feet to sunken shipwrecks, and snorkel through the mangroves lining offshore islets. Here is a rundown of the top snorkeling locales around the island. Many spots are easily accessible right off the beach, while others can only be reached by boat. For these, sign up for one of the many half- and full-day island and boat tours where snorkeling is just part of the fun.
Northwest coast
The shallow waters off the west coast off Malmok, Boca Catalina, and Arashi Beach offer a host of snorkeling possibilities. The calm water, gentle currents, shallow reefs (6 to 30 feet) and good visibility contain numerous marine species such as large stands of elkhorn coral, sponges, and schools of colorful fish. The shallower 3- to 10-foot-deep reefs off Boca Catalina are ideal for beginners. This coast is also a great choice if you are looking for a bit of excitement. Between Malmok and Catalina is the wreck of the

Antilla. It sits in about 60 feet of water, but the superstructure breaks the surface at low tide. Just south of Malmok is the Pedernales wreck, sitting in 30 feet of water and much of it visible above the surface. Both wrecks are great places to see swarms of schooling reef fishes like silversides, squirrelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. You might also see the odd barracuda. Southwest coast
Running almost the entire length of the coast from Oranjestad to San Nicolas is a series of small offshore islands or cays. Located just offshore at the end of the airport runway is Renaissance Island, only a 10-minute water taxi ride from
the harbor. The 12-foot-deep waters surrounding this island paradise offer large areas of staghorn coral along with schools of blue parrotfish and white grunts. For a real treat, snorkel into the mangroves that line the shore to see small shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. It’s always a thrill to explore these underwater nurseries; it’s here that many of the most exciting creatures you’re likely to see while snorkeling are born. Just south of Renaissance Island, near Spanish Lagoon, is De Palm Island, a hot spot for snorkeling on Aruba. A fiveminute ferry ride from the tiny coastal town of Pos Chiquito, this little island offers calm water, great visibility, and a variety of watersports including snuba (a cross between scuba and snorkeling).

Activities Snorkelers in search of a scuba-like experience appreciate this activity as it does not require any certification. Water depths are 3 to 20 feet and you’ll see large schools of giant blue parrotfish, fields of staghorn coral, and sea fans. Southeast coast
The small, secluded bays along the southeast coast contain great snorkeling beaches, including Baby Beach. This is a favorite with families thanks to the shallow reef running across the mouth of the inlet that protects Baby Lagoon from the big easterly swells. The reef also offers great snorkeling opportunities with water that is about eight feet deep and swarms with giant blue parrotfish, butterflyfish, and wrasses. The deeper and choppier water on the outer edge of the reef is suitable for more advanced snorkelers. Water depths here average 17 feet and the critters tend to be larger, like stingrays, barracuda, and horse-eye jacks.
North coast
The rough north coast does not lend itself well to snorkeling. There is one spot, however, where, if the weather is calm, you’ll enjoy a truly unique snorkeling experience. It’s called Conchi or Aruba’s Natural Pool and it’s only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles or on horseback. Waves crash over the rocks of this natural formation and fill the pool with water, which then warms up in the sun. On calm, clear days, the water of the pool is great for snorkeling. You’ll see coral and lots of colorful fish. So grab your mask and fins, dive in, and enjoy the underwater beauty of this happy snorkel island! Caribbean shrimp

The quiet, narrow stretch of beach near the California Lighthouse is a great place to get away from it all. Dive the elkhorn coral reef a short swim from shore, or just lie peacefully under a palapa and watch the pelicans fish.
Another popular swimming and snorkeling spot, Malmok is a narrow sandy stretch set in a limestone and rocky terrace along the surrounding coast. Both tourists and local families love hanging out in this small, secluded bay. Boca Catalina is popular for its clear, calm, and shallow waters, as well as its nearby reef, teeming with tropical fish. Be prepared for the prehistoric experience of a lifetime! Surrounded by some of Aruba’s most deserted and rugged terrain, Natural Pool lies hidden among a formation of huge volcanic rocks that jut into the ocean. Swim safely in the blue, sheltered water, as wild seas outside the pool pound the rocky coastline. It’s a great day-trip and getting there in an off-road vehicle is an adventure in itself.
Located in the Arikok National Park, this hidden beach is a favorite among surfers, although huge waves and strong currents make it unsuitable for swimming. Dos Playa consists of two bordering coves carved out of the island’s limestone. Picnic on a broad, white beach under the shade of the sea-grape trees and take in the beautiful view. For those who take their beach bumming seriously, Aruba is awash with spectacular stretches of sand that are all linked together by one major thoroughfare, and they are all open to the public! You can drive, grab a cab, or take Aruba’s public transit from the main terminal right downtown or at one of the many stops along the coast. The air-conditioned buses are modern and affordable and stop at every major resort along all the most popular beaches. Eagle Beach is the first, it’s laid back and relaxed, lining the lowrise resort stretch, while Palm Beach is the more active surfside playground cresting the highrise stretch chock full of watersports, activities, beach bars, and dining spots. Everything is within an easy walk back to a bus stop or a taxi stand.
Aruba’s tour operators and activity directors are first rate, and some adventures combine the best of both worlds with snorkeling or swimming at locations like the unique Natural Pool or beautiful Baby Beach. There are all kinds of terrestrial oddities to discover on this island such as bizarre rock formations and ancient bat-filled caves. And Aruba’s interior is very arid, cacti-studded, desert-like, and dotted with gnarled trees, lounging lizards, feral goats, and even wild donkeys. very close to the shore and in very shallow waters. Most of the snorkeling trips include this site and also stop at two other fish-filled spots. Or if you don’t snorkel, there are party boats and dinner/sunset sails available as well. You can also get close to Aruba’s resplendent reefs without even getting wet via a semi-submarine or a real submarine tour under the sea. And you can enjoy the island sights riding the waves with serene sea kayak tours. Creature and critter encounters

Even if your visit to Aruba is brief, your impact on the environment can be felt. But there are many ways to lesson your footprint. Aruba has passed environmental laws including a ban of plastic bags, cups, straws, and Styrofoam take-out containers. The island has also banned environmentally harmful sunscreens, but there are many spots to purchase the reef-friendly kind here. So please abide by the new rules to help keep our island paradise clean and pristine. Take only photographs and leave only ripples.

Marriott Courtyard’s Vicky Perez A Force to Be Reckoned With by Max Cruz Don’t think passing through the glass ceiling of being picked to manage a Marriott property is a simple task for any man or woman, but our very own Vicky Perez, did just that.
And she did it the ol’ fashioned way... the school of hard knocks and a determined vision. It’s quite challenging to be selected the first woman to run and set the brand standards for the Courtyard by Marriott Aruba Resort here in the Caribbean, and Vicky is here for just that. This great opportunity has not been lost on Vicky. In setting her culture all around her, it’s easy to see that with humility, Vicky looks forward to the challenges of a woman’s empowerment from the very moment you walk into her office completely staffed by... you guessed it – women. “I feel it’s extremely important to hire local women and give them the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and ambitions as I, too, had hoped for. The true return on this will be to see our culture of caring and sharing make a difference in the community of the hotel and on our island as well.” When asked how her personal message might get reflected in her managing style, Vicky is very quick to say, “Here at the new Courtyard by Marriott Aruba Resort, everyone will be treated like family. Spas A lava shell massage is a variation on the hot stone massage where the therapist lightly massages with heated lava shells. Minerals, algae, salt water, and essential oils – from relaxing lavender, rose, and clary sage to energizing ginger, grapefruit, and ylang ylang – are combined inside the heated shell. The mixture produces a chemical reaction that creates additional heat for about one hour. The shells used are usually tigerstriped clamshells. Previously they were discarded after the clams were eaten, but now they are being recycled, making the lava shell massage eco-friendly too!
It’s a wrap
Wraps are fabulous for a sleeker, firmer you, thanks in part to the natural elements they employ. In a body wrap treatment, your torso, legs, arms, and neck are enveloped in elastic cloths that have been presoaked with special ingredients. The cloths create a thermal blanket that promotes gentle sweating to help eliminate toxins and fluids between body tissues resulting in smoother skin. A green wrap uses live spirulina algae from the sea to impart essential vitamins, minerals, and protein and thus encourage slimming. Avocado Allure by Susan Campbell The “alligator pear” is crawling beyond the confines of Mexican cuisine and California rolls looking to leave its mark on the culinary world at large. The results are not only nutritious but also delightfully delicious!
An aphrodisiacal fruit
Though many people might assume it’s a vegetable, the avocado is actually a fruit. And long before it became famous as the main ingredient in guacamole, it was popular with ancient cultures like the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas for other things beyond sustenance. The Aztecs called the fruit ahutacatl, which means testicle, because the fruit grows in pairs and somewhat resembles that part of male anatomy, but also because it was believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac and fertility aid. Even today in parts of Latin America, the avocado is given at weddings as a symbol of fertility. The conquering Spanish changed the name to abocado. During Jamaica’s colonial days, the British gave it the nickname “alligator pear” for its crinkly green skin. But not all avocados are crinkly; some are smooth and they come in many different
sizes and varietie. Some types of avocados can grow to up to three to four pounds while others like the hybrid strain called avocaditos, only grow to two inches long. The most popular species for culinary use is called the Hass, named after postman Rudolf Hass who first cultivated it in Southern California. Healthful benefits
Although avocados are a good source of fiber, vitamins C, K, B6, and folate, and contain even more potassium than bananas, they received a bad reputation for their fat content a while back. Some were even calling them butter pears, and nutritionists recommended going easy on them. But later studies revealed that the fat in avocados is actually a heart-healthy transfat that helps lower cholesterol, plus they are full of antioxidants and can even regulate blood sugar levels. Dining news for vegetarians and vegans who have often relied on avocados to add protein and texture to their recipes. Now some celebrities have also jumped on the avocado bandwagon. Actors Tom Selleck and Jamie Foxx and Grammy-winning singer Jason Mraz each have their own commercial avocado farms and publicly promote the fruit whenever they can as a healthy dietary option. Culinary use
Of course, the avocado is best known as the main ingredient in guacamole, but savvy chefs are getting creative with this friendly fruit. It gets along well with other foods since its unassuming taste allows other ingredients to pop, and its creamy texture helps bind foods together. Though it’s often added to salads, sandwiches, wraps, and sushi rolls, it can also be cooked and even baked. It prefers low heat, unless you grill it on the barbecue or bake an unripe avocado in its skin like a potato.
Only add it to warm dishes like stir-fries at the very end. It also keeps its shape well for deep-frying – tempura avocado dipped in a Thai peanut sauce is to die for – and even fares well with cheese fondue. It pairs nicely with tarragon, fennel, and saffron to make amazing pasta sauces, is lovely in a cold bisque, and does the job as a savory topping for meat and fish. But it can also play nice with sweets, acting as a healthy substitute for butter, dairy, or even eggs in baked goods like breads, cakes, and cupcakes (though be prepared for things to take on a mildly green tint).

Or how about an avocado popsicle as a deliciously different, healthy frozen treat? Avocado oil is becoming very popular as the base ingredient in homemade salad dressings and is also perfect for high heat cooking. And smoothie aficionados love the luscious, thick texture avocados provide, almost like a milkshake. Tips and tricks
As wonderful as avocados are, choosing and storing these fruits can be tricky. Best enjoyed perfectly ripe, they will quickly become overripe if neglected. They are
picked from the tree before they are mature, so generally you have to leave them on the counter a few days to ripen; they will ripen faster when put in a paper bag with an apple. (Do not refrigerate unripe avocados.) To be sure it’s ready, try pinching both ends before cutting into it; if they give a little then it’s good to eat; if you leave a dent, then it’s overripe. One way to test before you buy is to lift the little brown nub. If it’s dark brown underneath, the avocado is no good, but if it’s green, it’s ripe!

From gritty saloons to posh casinos and from Kenny Rogers to James Bond, games involving a 52-card deck can be as alluring as they are intimidating, especially for the neophyte, would-be gambler. how much to bet. Nope. In this game, you play the hand that’s dealt you. Sitting down at the table, you’ll be expected to pay an ante, or a minimum bet to enter the game. Just like in traditional stud poker, the dealer will provide each player and himself with five cards, all face down, before revealing one of his own cards. You’ll then look at your own cards and either try to make your best poker hand (pair, three-of-a-kind, full house, etc.) or fold, forfeiting your ante. If you decide to play, remember your cards well! Once you lay them down on
the playing surface, you won’t be able to touch them again. In order to keep playing, you’ll have to bet double the amount of your ante. Once all bets are in, the dealer reveals his cards. Moving right to left, the dealer compares his or her hand to that of each player, and the best hand wins. Depending on just how lucky you are, beating the dealer can pay you even money or up to 100 to 1, if you happen to get a royal flush on one deal. Sound easy enough? If not, Let It Ride may be more your style, at least at the beginning of your gambling career.

Like Caribbean Stud, Let It Ride pits players against the house, except players receive three cards instead of five. From those three cards and two “community” cards, each player attempts to fashion their best poker hand. Let It Ride employs three rounds of betting, and players’ hands are compared with a specific payout chart, rather than with the hands of other players or the dealer. Players place three separate bets on the playing surface. After looking at their initial cards, players can retract their first bet, or choose to “let it ride” and continue. The dealer then exposes the first community card, and players have the opportunity to retract their second bet, after which all cards must be placed face down on the playing surface and not touched again. Once the dealer turns over the second and final community card, it’s all over except for the crying or cheering, as the case may be. The dealer collects the losing wagers and pays winners according to the payout schedule. The rules and individualistic nature of Let It Ride give the game a more leisurely, thoughtful pace than other forms

of poker, a characteristic which should be of particular appeal to beginners. Now place those bets!
Let us be clear: if you’ve never played the tables at a casino, you’re missing an exciting, possibly unforgettable experience. While lack of experience or the inability to maintain a poker face may have frightened you away from poker before, games like Caribbean Stud and Let It Ride are true games of chance. Despite being less complicated than other forms of poker, however, these games do offer a more personal engagement with other players and with the casino atmosphere than sticking to the slot machines. On Palm Beach your best bet to begin is happy hour at outdoor party spots like Pelican Pier Bar, an entertaining overwater hangout offering live music and creative drinks. As the sun sinks into the sea, head to Ritz-Carlton Aruba’s Divi Sushi Bar & Lounge for their sunset celebration each day when they offer complimentary samples of their signature cocktail The Cadushy made with local cactus juice puree. Land of Aloe: Aruba’s Divine Plant by Richard Andrews From Cleopatra to celebrities, aloe devotees have extolled the “divine” plant for its healing, health, and cosmetic benefits. Visitors to Aruba can try out a wide range of aloe products, see how they’re made and learn about the plant’s fascinating history.
Before we start, let’s straighten out some confusion about the name. Aloe refers to a genus comprising hundreds of flowering succulent plants. Aloe vera is the best known and most popular species in this family, but it’s commonly just called aloe for short, which is what we’ll do here. Folklore has contributed significantly to the popularity of aloe and belief in its curative properties. The virtues of aloe have been praised for thousands of years by many ancient civilizations including Egypt, Persia, Greece, India, and Africa. Thought to originate in northern Africa, the plant’s name was derived from the Arabic alloeh meaning “bitter,” because of the bitter-tasting liquid found in the leaves. Aloe was also known in various languages as Lily of the Desert, the Plant of Immortality, and the Medicine Plant. Millennia ago, when religion and medicine overlapped, illnesses were often regarded as demonic possession of the body and only a “divine” plant such as
aloe supposedly had the natural power to exorcise the evil spirits. Egyptian scribes recorded use of the plant in 1500 BCE for treating burns, infections, and parasites. It is said that Cleopatra kept her skin soft and young with aloe gel to help entice Mark Antony. Queen Nefertiti reputedly used the gel as part of her beauty routine as well. Even the Egyptian dead were embalmed with aloe for its antibacterial and antifungal qualities, in the hope that stopping physical decomposition could attain eternal life.

Flora Dioscorides, the physician and naturalist, took a more scientific approach centuries later. The “father of pharmacy” journeyed through the Roman Empire with Nero’s army researching new methods of medication. He described aloe as one of his favorite healing plants in several books of diagnoses, treatments, and prescriptions which were used as references for many years. During the Crusades, the Knights Templar created a cocktail of palm wine, aloe pulp, and hemp, which they called the Elixir of Jerusalem. Although it sounds suspiciously like a medieval party punch, the good brothers believed that the concoction would add years to their health and life. Unfortunately, those killed in battle or burned at the stake were unable to confirm the effectiveness of the elixir. More credible was Christopher Columbus’s belief in the healing powers of aloe. His ships carried aloe pot plants to treat the wounds of soldiers accompanying him to the New World. Samurai warriors also rubbed liquid aloe on their bodies to relieve pain from sprains and strains.
What does aloe contain?
With its green serrated leaves and rosette shape, aloe contains a multitude of active ingredients, including vitamins A, C, and E, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and antioxidants. Aloe is often used topically to treat burns, abrasions, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. It’s marketed in the form of gels, creams, and juices. Many cosmetic companies add aloe derivatives to skin care products such as make-up, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, shaving creams, and shampoos. Traditional Chinese medicine also considers aloe as a cool, moistening, yin tonic especially useful to treat skin irritation. Aloe as a modern health food
Aloe’s widespread use as a health food is reflected in the numerous recipes for smoothies, salads, and many other dishes. Herbal medicine practitioners in some parts of the world prescribe aloe juices for a wide range of benefits and illnesses, including diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, and asthma. However, no scientific evidence supports claims that aloe benefits such serious conditions.

Aruba’s climate and the dry soil are particularly suitable for the planting of aloe, one of the island’s major exports. Through careful cultivation methods, the plant has flourished and earned Aruba a reputation as one of the world’s finest producers of aloe. Historically, aloe has played an important role in Aruba’s economy and culture, even figuring prominently in Aruba’s coatof-arms. Before the arrival of the oil industry, aloe was an important source of income for the small cunucero or farmer and in the 19th century aloin resin from the plant found important markets in New York, London, and Hamburg. In the 1950s Aruba accounted for about a third of the world’s aloe production. Market share declined as buildings replaced plantations, but the sales on the Internet have opened up new opportunities for the local industry. With the growing demand for natural products, aloe also has a bright future in applications as an effective alternative to synthetic agents.

Aruba also has links to the plant’s ancient history. In the 19th century a plantation established in Socotoro, was named after Yemen’s legendary island of Socotra, another aloe producer. Legend says Aristotle urged Alexander the Great to conquer the island for the aloe he used to treat his wounded troops. Nowadays, aloe products are widely used by Aruba’s spas and hotels, while the Aruba Aloe Museum, Factory, and Store in Hato offers tours where you can learn more about the history and production of this fascinating plant. In fact, you don’t have to be Cleopatra, a conqueror of empires, or wounded in battle to find aloe useful during your visit to the island. Aruba’s own after-sun lotion is an excellent way to soothe your skin if you’ve stayed on the beach a bit too long.

A Conversation with Tesh Chugani Owner’s Son and Lead Family Designer at Kay’s Fine Jewelry Aruba As a young professional, Tesh Chugani took a strong liking to the retail sales floor and the personal touch. He enjoyed forging long lasting friendships with potential clients that walked through the door. As the business grew, so did his passion for jewelry design and unique collections. Over the last five years, Tesh has used the colors and nature of Aruba to serve as his inspiration for Fine Jewelry Collections. Ocean blue gemstones and earth toned colored diamonds are featured in many of his exquisite Kay’s Fine Jewelry pieces. Blending as many as three to four colors of gold is also not uncommon as each of the collections has a distinctive look and feel. Tesh said: “I noticed that so many clients wanted to take home a piece of Aruba with them. It was a very special journey for me to capture this magical feeling of paradise through jewelry design. There is no better feeling than when I get
a call or text from a client to tell me how much they are enjoying their item and how many compliments they receive.” When asked what prompted this trend and passion for design, Tesh responded without hesitation: “Our dushi Aruba has a unique charm – I am inspired by what our island and our surroundings offer. The divi trees, the sunset colors on the horizon, and the sea life on a snorkel trip are just a few iconic themes. I take these thoughts and colors and try to design something special that people can pass on for generations and remember the happy spirit and energy of Aruba.” Besides some of the collections that Tesh has launched at Kay’s Fine Jewelry Aruba, it’s the family values, the strong relationships, and the trust they have made with their clients that are especially meaningful. Tesh explained: “Our clients are a part of our family. They are not only buying a piece of jewelry but also buying into a family and a circle of honesty and integrity when they trust in us. We are humbled by the confidence that so many of our clients have placed in us over the decades and it is a true joy now to see them returning year after year.”
