An Affair to Remember
An Affair to Remember Saying “I Do”... on Aruba by Rosanna Mignacca You have found your soul mate, and you are both ready to take the plunge. Perhaps you’re even planning your honeymoon on Aruba. Think how much fun it would be to get married here as well. Should it be the ultimate, intimate getaway? Or, do you picture your families and friends in the photos? An island wedding – what a wonderful way, in a perfect place – for everyone to meet and mingle!
Perhaps you’ve dreamed of getting married since you were little. Perhaps it came as a surprise that you, of all people, are now studying celebrity wedding dresses with newfound interest, and reading about perfect venues to hold a wedding. Maybe, a fairytale affair with family and friends on a stunning Aruba white sand beach at sunset could be your dream come true for so many reasons.

Just like a postcard
When you choose Aruba, you’re almost guaranteed a picture-perfect day with sunny skies and billowy clouds. Aruba has more days of sunshine than any other Caribbean island. Visitors know Aruba’s reputation of One Happy Island is more than well deserved. The people of Aruba, comprised of some 96 nationalities, are warm and welcoming and definitely know how to throw the greatest celebrations. As you might guess, wedding choices are as diverse as the island itself. If you’d like a private affair for just the two of you, or even a small group, you’ll find Arubans are friendly and eager to help you with your arrangements. On the other hand,
should you decide on an elaborate gala with a large guest list, consider hiring one of the many on-island wedding planners. Several of Aruba’s resorts and hotels also offer wedding packages ranging from affordable to lavish. Stylish, special… memorable
When you choose Aruba for your destination wedding, chances are your guest list will be more pared down than if you married in your hometown. Destination weddings mean fewer obligatory guests and more time spent with the people you really want to share your day with. Friends and family who do receive invitations know the list was limited and feel extra special to the couple. If you and your beloved are from different geographic locations, there’s no home advantage or travel for just one side of the family. There is a sense of excitement among guests to celebrate with you on an Aruba getaway. E

Precious time together
Aruba destination weddings are so popular because they allow you and your spouse to interact with guests over a longer event. When your guests stay at the same resort, quality time and casual events can ensure everyone has a chance to mingle, make new friends, and celebrate. You can set up a variety of activities for your guests to enjoy, such as a pampering spa day, a golf tournament, a cruise or deepsea fishing, or guests can choose to just relax and explore Aruba on their own. A perfect day, at a perfect price
If you are looking to create a beautiful wedding with memories to last a lifetime, but not take a lifetime to pay off the bill, Aruba resorts can offer you a total package of everything you need for your wedding or vow renewal: planner, decor, photographer, videographer, and more. These options can free you from the stress of planning and overseeing each detail while you stick to a budget you’re comfortable with. Imagine simply getting ready to relax and enjoy your special day. Many Aruba resorts offer honeymoon discounts when you also book your wedding or vow renewal ceremony with them. These can include everything from preferred check-ins to gifts, discounts, and exclusive offers on activities and attractions. Some resorts even offer a free night’s stay when you return for your first anniversary. Have fun, shop around, and speak to the wedding pros on Aruba. You’ll be so glad you did!
Eat and drink to your heart’s content
For gourmands, Aruba offers something for every taste. From casual buffet style dining to award-winning chefs at five-star resorts, you and your guests’ taste buds are sure to be delighted. The many resorts on Aruba also offer wedding packages that can include expert catering and banquet staff to be on hand to serve your guests. Choose from packages that include all-inclusive buffets with open bars, or full-service, sit-down dinners and per consumption drinking. These options are usually mix-and-match, so you choose the elements that fit your style and budget. Celebrate with a flourish

All legal civil ceremonies are held in the pretty and historic Town Hall in Oranjestad. Wedding Requirements
What to Do Before You Say “I Do” Sunny Aruba, with its mix of barefoot casual and sexy glamour, has become one of the most desirable island wedding destinations. Its westward-facing, white-sand beaches wrap sunset ceremonies in a dreamy glow, and its luxurious waterfront resorts offer upscale wining and dining for the most discerning tastes. If you want a legal, civil marriage on Aruba, it must take place at the beautiful Town Hall in Oranjestad. But couples can also arrange a religious blessing or vow-exchanging beach ceremony after they have been legally married, either on Aruba or at home. During the ceremony, you will sign and receive a symbolic marriage book. Many couples choose to be legally married at home, and then have their beach wedding ceremony on Aruba. Your wedding planner will help guide you through the steps. If you do choose to be legally married on Aruba, you will need to provide the following documents:
• Copy of birth certificate for bride and groom, with apostille (state certification). Full names of parents, including mother’s maiden name, must be on the birth certificate. • Certificate of no impediment for bride and groom, with apostille. This is also referred to as a single status report, and in some states called a negative statement of marriage. • Copy of the first and last page of the divorce decree(s), with apostille, if either party is divorced. Even if you have your divorce decree you still need the certificate of no impediment for bride and groom. • Copy of death certificate, with apostille, if either party is widowed. Forms to be completed also include the following and will be sent to you from Aruba:
• Letter of intent for bride and groom • Declaration of single status for bride and groom • Passport picture page for bride and groom • Passport picture for two (2) witnesses Please note, original documents are required a minimum of four (4) weeks prior to the wedding date.

The only thing more romantic than long walks together on a beautiful beach is dining surfside by tiki torchlight with your bare toes touching in the soft white sand. Perfect Pearls
Perfect Pearls by Anne Sasso Our enduring love affair with pearls began when our ancestors pried open oysters in search of a meal and were surprised instead by a luminous gem.
For thousands of years, divers searched the waters of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea for natural pearls – the only known source of these rare, highlyprized symbols of beauty and wealth. Then Europeans learned of pearl riches in the New World. When Christopher Columbus landed in what is now Venezuela in 1498, the luxurious pearls adorning the local women enchanted him. The warm blue waters encircling the islands of Cubagua, Margarita, and Coche off Venezuela’s coast were home to thick beds of pearl oysters. The region soon became known as the “Pearl Coast” and the Spanish established their first town in the New World, Nueva Cadiz, on the island of Cubagua in 1528 to collect the gems and ship them back to Spanish nobility.
22 Nights
The Venezuelan riches became legendary, but over-harvesting in the 1500s quickly decimated the bounty, and the jewels disappeared from the region. A similar story played out around the globe: the hunger for pearls destroyed natural pearl stocks. By the 20th century, the Japanese began experimenting with cultured pearls – implanting a nucleus, often a bead or piece of shell, into pearl oysters and returning them to the sea for several years before harvesting the gems. Legendary pearl entrepreneur Kokichi Mikimoto used these techniques to bring stunning akoya pearls to the world. Now, all pearls, whether saltwater or freshwater, are cultured using these techniques, and Mikimoto’s name is still a hallmark of quality pearls.
From a classic necklace of matched pearls to sleek, modern drops threaded on delicate wire strands, the beauty of pearls is timeless. This year, designers favored nature-inspired, organic shapes and tones in the pieces chosen to accentuate their latest designs, and pearl jewelry is one of the hottest fashion accessories. E
Perfect Pearls
Nights 23
Perfect Pearls
For years, pearl cultivators have followed in Mikimoto’s footsteps and sought to grow perfectly round pearls. So it’s ironic that today elaborately shaped baroque pearls are one of the latest fashion trends. Look for multicolored strands of pastel pink Chinese freshwater, silvery grey Tahitian, or golden South Sea pearls. The unconventional beauty of baroque pearls also comes with a bonus: they’re much less expensive than traditional round pearls. Other fashion trends include multiple strands of pearl necklaces; look for matching colors (pastels are in) but with varied hues to increase eye appeal. Complement the look with long, swinging chandelierstyle or sleek geometric earrings that graze the shoulder.
24 Nights
Selecting pearls is easy if you know how they form. Once implanted, pearl oysters wrap the nucleus in nacre – microscopically thin plates of aragonite, a calcium carbonate mineral, cemented in an overlapping pattern by protein. When the nacre is thick, light travels through multiple layers of aragonite, reflects back from individual plates and creates a sumptuous glow that emanates from within the pearl, called luster. Thick nacre also allows the dispersion of light into multicolored hues, much like a raindrop or prism. Orient is the term used to describe this intoxicating swirl of rainbow iridescence moving across a pearl’s surface. The greater the luster and orient, the more beautiful and valuable the pearl.
By understanding the importance of nacre, you can choose pearls with confidence. Thick nacre is the secret to beautiful pearls. Thin nacre results in pearls that chip, crack, and rapidly lose their beauty. Thinner nacre also compromises luster and orient.
Perfect Pearls
Select pearls that have uniform iridescence across their surface – this is the sign of exceptional orient and thick nacre. Stay away from pearls that look dull or chalky, an indication of thin nacre. Always take the time to check for cracks or peeling. Borrow the jeweler’s loupe to examine the drill hole in each pearl, if the nacre has broken away during drilling or is peeling, choose another strand. Buying from a reputable firm will also assure fewer surprises. Finally, always remember to hold the pearls up to your face and neck to make sure that the hues flatter your coloring. Whether you choose the unconventional beauty of baroque pearls, the striking exoticism of Tahitian black pearls, or the ivory perfection of classic Japanese akoya pearls, the natural beauty of your pearls will endure for generations to come. K

La Peregrina One of the world’s most magnificent and perhaps most famous pearls is La Peregrina, “the pilgrim.” Its fascinating story spans nearly 500 years. A slave found the large, pear-shaped gem in 1560 in the waters around Panama’s aptly named Pearl Islands. It was so magnificent that it bought him his freedom. The pearl then traveled the globe, adorning royalty, from Queen Mary I (Mary Tudor) who received it from King Philip II of Spain, to the Bonapartes of France and the British Marquis of Abercorn, who offered it to his lovely wife and mother of his 14 children, the Duchess Louisa Hamilton. In 1969, Richard Burton bought La Peregrina for $37,000 and presented it to his wife Elizabeth Taylor on Valentine’s Day, as an enduring symbol of love and of nature’s beauty. She had the 50-carat gem reset by Cartier with pearls, diamonds, and rubies, while also ensuring a more secure setting for her precious gift. Taylor cherished La Peregrina until her death in 2011. The rare and unique pearl was sold later that same year during a Christie’s auction to an anonymous buyer for more than $11 million. After wandering the world, this legendary pearl truly lived up to its name and will hopefully inspire many more love stories.
