2014 Spatial Organisations

From Where To Where? And How? ‘Buildings, Spatial Sequences, Spatial Organisations’ Tutors: Monia de Marchi and Shany Barath Student: Dominika Demlova

Synopsis: Through experimentation using sketches, models and most importantly group discussion, I have pushed my understanding of spatial organisations in buildings I encounter daily. As a group, we worked together from first grasping the basic idea of the individual spatial organisations and ways of using them to create “powerful moments with simple gestures” to creating final interations for a combination of a horizontal, block and tower buildings. Our two proposals combine cluster, grid and network organisations in such a way that in both proposals the spaces are spatially disconnected while in one the spaces are visually connected and in the other disconnected.

I started with putting emphasis on planar organisation due to the nature of the flat building, while trying to imagine the movement through the spaces for the individual person.

Organizing the enclosed spaces and open voids of the building according to one spatial organisation helped me to understand the basics of those organisations. The emphasis on the thresholds of the change of environment from enclosed space to open void for the person experiencing the building became fundamental for me throughout the whole design.

I thought about the section of the building when I combined the spatial organisations. One of them became always dominant in the proposal.

I focused on using the voids as the network throughout the building. There is also a direct circulation in the top part of the building.

Sketches of proposals for vertical building In my proposals for vertical buildings, I experimented with increasing a separation between the three modules of flats which created different experiences of the central space (hallway). As a group we however used proposal from Irene Squilloui, where the clustering, netwrok and grid was the cleaarest. We developed interlocking arrangment for the individual flats in the tower.
