2011-12 UMKC Athletics Annual Report
LETTER FROM TIM HALL DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dear Friends: On behalf of our coaches, staff, and most importantly, our studentathletes, I want to thank-you for your over arching support of the Kangaroos. In reviewing this annual report, you will see that we have continued to make great strides both on the playing venue and in the classroom during the 2011-12 season. We had one of the best seasons ever in 2011-12, finishing fifth place in the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings, the highest finish since taking second in 1999-2000. UMKC also took third in the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports standings, the highest finish since winning in 1998-99. Over the course of the year, our teams consistently finished in the top half of the conference standings, including our men’s tennis team winning the Summit League Tournament title and a share of the regular season crown. Individually, our student-athletes had a great deal of success this past season, as 41 were honored as all-league performers, one Player of the Year and one Newcomer of the Year, while first-year head women’s soccer coach Chris Cissell was tabbed as Summit League Coach of Year. In the classroom, our student-athletes continued to have unprecedented success, as the department finished with a Summit League best 3.24 cumulative grade point average, besting last year’s mark of 3.22. Additionally, a total of 141 were Academic All-League honorees, 97 were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, and one was named a third-team Academic All-American, the seventh time in UMKC history that someone earned All-American recognition. This year also saw the renovation of the floor inside the Swinney Recreation Center gymnasium, as well as the addition of a new home facility in an agreement with St. Theresa’s for our track and field program. We also now have a home for our softball program as the Missouri 3&2 Complex gave our team a true home field advantage last season. As you continue to read about our accomplishments, know that we are working hard not only for the success of today’s student-athletes, but also for the programs of the future. We have some big plans and want you to continue be a part of them going forward. We will continue to use all the resources available to graduate our student-athletes and to put a program on the courts and fields for which you can be proud. We are also committed to our alumni and engaging the fans and friends of UMKC. This report is designed to give you a general synopsis into UMKC Athletics for the 2011-12 academic year. Should you have any specific questions about any information contained in the report, please contact Rob McCutcheon, Sports Information Director (mccutcheonrb@umkc.edu) or myself (halltw@umkc.edu) at your convenience. I also encourage you to follow all the action throughout the upcoming 2011-12 year on our athletics web site, www.UMKCKangaroos.com or via Twitter @TheUMKCRoos. Go ‘Roos! Timothy W.
