KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City will embark upon its maiden voyage in the Western Athletic Conference in 2014. The junior-laden group returns eight starters and welcomes seven newcomers to the fold in what will be head coach Meredith Smith Neal’s eighth season at the helm. The winningest coach in program history, Smith Neal led the Kangaroos to an 18-27 mark and a trip to The Summit League semifinals in 2013. A season later, expectations are heightened within the four walls of the UMKC locker room at Durwood Stadium. “I am excited about the upcoming season,” said Smith Neal. “The thought of being out there on the field makes your mouth water. We’ve been beating each other up for four weeks, and we’re just interested to see how we will attack someone other than ourselves. Our success will lie with confidence, and we should be confident because we have prepared properly.” The ‘Roos return three of their top five hitters from a season ago, including Bri Wyatt, who led Kansas City with a .375 batting average in 2013. Among the fresh additions, UMKC will look for contributions from as many as four transfers. THE INFIELD Kansas City was dealt a considerable blow when sophomore Jenna Rangel was lost for the season to shoulder surgery. Rangel appeared in 45 games in 2013, hitting .261 and scoring 17 runs. She will be replaced, in large part, by Northern Iowa transfer Aly Zembruski, who figures in at shortstop. Joining Zembruski up the middle will likely be junior Kristi Lee. The Olathe, Kan., product started four games in 2013. The corners are relatively steady with Preseason All-WAC first baseman Katie Kelley anchoring one side of the diamond. When Kelley pitches, expect sophomore Kendra Leach to step in. Junior Marlee Maples and sophomore Maddie Garton will likely platoon at third base. Garton, an Overland Park, Kan., native, started 11 games in 2013, scratching out nine hits and 10 total bases. Maples will bring versatility to the infield with her ability to play virtually any position. She can be expected to see time at first base and shortstop, in addition to the hot corner. Maples hit drove in a team-high 32 runs in 2013. THE OUTFIELD The ‘Roos are strong in the outfield with College Sports Madness Preseason All-WAC centerfielder Brooke Parker likely penciled into the lead-off spot. Parker led the team with 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts in 2013. She will be flanked by Bri Wyatt and Carnecia Kirkwood in left and right field, respectively. In Wyatt, the ‘Roos have an outstanding hitter with good speed, who stole a dozen bags, herself, a season ago. Kirkwood, a Coffeyville CC-transfer, finished eighth in the NJCAA in bag thievery last spring, and rounds out what is potentially the most athletically gifted outfield in the WAC. Kaitlyn Carey and Kelsey Volle remain options in right field. Utility player Abby Warkentine will likely serve as the first run-

ner off of the bench. THE BATTERY UMKC is rock solid behind the plate with Preseason All-WAC catcher Caitlin Christopher and sophomore Alex Friloux. Christopher earned second team All-Summit League honors as a freshman, only to hit .329 and rack up 33 total bases in 22 starts as an encore a season ago. Friloux batted .276 and drove in 13 runs in 33 starts in 2013. The pair figures to share time between catcher and the designated player spot. Freshman Alex Gale could see time, as well, in a pinch hitting capacity. The departure of Deanna Friese leaves a question mark in the circle. Friese, the program record holder in virtually every statistical pitching category, made 31 appearances a season ago, tossing 20 complete games and four shutouts. The leading candidate to replace her will be junior Cinda Ramos. The Olathe, Kan., native has logged 40 starts over her first two seasons, including an eye-popping freshman campaign during which she tossed 174.1 innings and 14 complete games. Ramos will be pushed by Kelley and Northern Iowa-transfer Kenzie Flaws. Kelley made 13 appearances during her freshman season, including one complete game shutout. Flaws appeared in 12 games, including three starts, while at UNI, covering 19.2 innings. ROOS PICKED FIFTH New Mexico State is the preseason favorite to win the 2014 Western Athletic Conference softball title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches. The Aggies took the top spot in the poll with 25 points and five first-place votes, followed by Seattle U in second place with 19 points and the other first place vote. The ‘Roos were selected fifth by WAC peers, just ahead of Division I newcomer Grand Canyon. “I love being preseason fifth,” said Smith Neal. “We have officially been labeled an underdog, and that is when we perform our best. Overlook us and see what happens.” CHRISTOPHER, KELLEY SELECTED TO WAC PRESEASON SQUAD The preseason All-WAC team, as selected by the coaches, was announced, and Kansas City is well-represented with a pair of selections: Caitlin Christopher and Katie Kelley. Christopher, a junior catcher from Denton, Texas, started 22 games for the ‘Roos in 2013, hitting .329 with a pair of homeruns and 7 runs driven in.

Sophomore Brooke Parker

Coweta, Okla.-native Katie Kelley appeared in 45 games as a freshman in 2013, earning first-team All-Summit League Honors. Kelley batted .262 with 33 hits, including six doubles and a team-high five homeruns. ‘ROOS PLACE TRIO ON COLLEGE MADNESS ALL-WAC TEAM In addition to being picking up preseason honors from conference coaches, Caitlin Christopher and Katie Kelley were also named to the College Sports Madness WAC Preseason All-Conference team. They were joined by teammate Brooke Parker. Parker, who is projected as the lead-off hitter for the ‘Roos, batted .302 with 40 total bases and 30 runs scored during her freshman campaign in 2013.
