2013 Season Preview
In only his third season in charge, Kansas City head coach Chris Cissell has changed the culture surrounding the Kangaroo women’s soccer program.
After managing just two wins in the school’s first two seasons, UMKC has posted 14 victories since 2011. The next challenge in the progression of the program emerged in February, when the school left the Summit League for the more powerful Western Athletic Conference. In program history, however, there has been perhaps no group so well equipped for the transition. Kansas City returns 20 letter winners and 11 starters in 2013, including the school’s all-time leading scorer, Taylor Bare. In addition, the ‘Roos welcome several impact freshmen.
Joining Bare on the offensive is a pair of Overland Park—natives, twin sisters Hannah Chadick and Ellie Chadick. After transferring from Ball State in 2011, the Chadicks each appeared in all 19 games for the ‘Roos in 2012. Hannah finished the season second on the team in points (9). “The Chadick twins will play as wingers, outside-mids or even wing forwards,” said Cissell. “In our system that we’re looking at playing this year, they’re going to play some at outside-mid, some as an old-fashioned winger, and some as forwards. We have high expectations for both of them, not only to score goals, but to create goals.”
London, England-native Sophie Rackham will spearhead the defense, from the defensive midfielder position. Rackham is one of many stalwarts from a season ago, and has consistently impressed coaches with her play. She leads a defense thought to be the strength of the team. The defensive backfield, considered a strength by the coaching staff, is anchored by Sarah Shaughnessy, Kaely Tott, Erica Teson and All-WAC hopeful Sarah Todd. Klorissa Kavan, Abby Shimota, Abby Wertenberger and Becky Blinzler will each see time at left outside mid or defender, as well. GOALKEEPERS
FORWARDS
One of the team’s deepest positions is goalkeeper, where as many as four different players will compete for the starting nod. Nina Tzianos is the incumbent and expected to be the starter, but she was pushed in fall camp by Megan Goetzinger and freshmen Chloe Weishaar and Morgan Perkins.
The forwards are led by Bare, UMKC’s all-time leader in goals (17) and points (40). The Anoka, Minn.—native netted a team-leading six goals and earned Summit League Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive season. “Taylor is a senior captain and has been the leading scorer of the team every year that she has been here,” said Cissell. “We expect big things from her. She has taken on that responsibility and leadership role, being the senior captain, and knowing that we expect her to step up and score more goals. She scored six last year and we expect her to be somewhere in double digits this year. I think that she’s fully capable of doing that.”
DEFENDERS
“We have four really good goalkeepers,” said Cissell. “We are deep defensively and deep at keeper. I feel like this team is going to be really good. Team unity and chemistry is good. Attitude and work rate has been good, and the girls are excited about the WAC.” SCHEDULE Elsewhere, Alyssa Elver, a second-team College Sports Madness all-league selection, will be expected to contribute. MIDFIELDERS Cissell will deploy a 4-1-4-1, an exotic look that will require versatility from his midfield. UMKC will benefit from the services of a couple of freshmen, Emily Herndon and Lauren Zach. “We’re expecting big things from Emily and Lauren,” said Cissell. “Lauren will probably be a right mid, right wing, right forward, she’s doing really well. Emily will have an opportunity to start at center mid. She will have a pretty big role on the team, even as a freshman.” Allison Schau, Jordan Andrzejewski, Taylor Andrzejewski and Presley Chrisco are all expected to contribute in some capacity at centermid, as well.

For the first time in Chris Cissell’s 15-year coaching career, his team will not have the luxury of any preseason matches to open the season; that coming as a result of the Kangaroos’ move from eight league games in the Summit League, to 12 league games in the WAC. The ‘Roos will instead kick off regular season play on Friday, Aug. 23, by welcoming nonconference foe SIU-Edwardsville to DSSRF, followed by a Sunday, Aug. 25, non-league home matchup with Southeast Missouri State. The lack of a preseason isn’t the only thing changing for Cissell & Co. The entirety of the schedule, itself, is far different from a season ago. “The exciting part is we’re playing all of these teams that we’ve never played before and playing places a lot of these girls have never been,” said Cissell. “Some of these girls have never been to Seattle or Phoenix or Bakersfield or Idaho.
“Right now, as coaches, we wish we knew more. We really don’t know a whole lot about the WAC, we don’t know a lot about their style and the way that they play. But, at the same time, they don’t know a whole lot about us. They don’t know anything about our girls and the way that we play. So I think the first year will be very interesting for all of us to try to figure out, what is the WAC like, what is the travel like, what is the style of other teams, how do other coaches coach? Even the teams that have been in the WAC, it’s such a new conference, no one has a lot of experience of playing and competing against each other.”
KANSAS CITY PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN THE WAC UMKC was selected as the sixth best team in the Western Athletic Conference as determined by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.
College Sports Madness announced its Preseason WAC All-League squads and awards, a list that included a handful of Kangaroos. All-time leading scorer Taylor Bare was selected as a first team forward, alongside defender Sarah Todd. Forward Hannah Chadick, midfielder Alyssa Elver, and defender Sarah Shaughnessy were each selected to the second team.
The ‘Roos will also trade in gas cards for frequent flyer miles, as the expanded conference landscape of the WAC will require a significant increase in travel distance.
Bare has led the ‘Roos in goals in each of her first three seasons. She already holds team marks in goals (40) and points (17) with her senior season still to play. Bare was a first team all-league selection in 2011.
Outside of its new league, UMKC will play an impressive non-conference slate that will include home matchups versus the SEC’s Missouri Tigers, as well as new Big East-member, Creighton. Kansas City will also hit the road for visits to Oral Roberts, Missouri State, Central Arkansas and Arkansas-Little Rock. “We have some really exciting things on the schedule,” said Cissell. “Missouri will probably be ranked in the top 20 when they come in here. I think it’s awesome to start at home on a Friday-Sunday. Not to mention a budding rivalry with Creighton and Missouri State. We’ve never played UCA or UALR, so we’re looking forward to going down [to Arkansas] for a weekend to see what those teams are like.”
FIVE ‘Roos Earn College Sports Madness All-League Team honors
Todd was an All-Summit League second team selection as a freshmen, finishing second on the team in assists. As a sophomore, Todd was again picked as a second team all-league performer.
New Mexico State, the team Kansas City will open WAC play with in a home-and-home of sorts, was selected one spot higher than the ‘Roos, earning eight more points. UMKC finished four points ahead of fellow WAC newcomer, Grand Canyon -- a position that head coach Chris Cissell relishes. “Being ranked sixth is awesome motivation to prove everyone wrong,” he said. “We want to show that we are definitely not the sixth best team in this league.
