GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE HALL MCGRAW BAGNOLI ARCHITECTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH SASAKI ASSOCIATES COMPLETED: SEPTEMBER 2016

This 225 bedroom, 84,000 square foot dorm in the heart of Georgetown’s campus was administered by McGraw Bagnoli Architects in association with Sasaki Associates, a Boston-based architecture firm. While MBA’s design input was minimal, MBA did oversee the entirety of the construction process, including but not limited to multiple meetings with the OGB, management of

ROLE: CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION consultants for the purposes of CA, maintenance of the as-built Revit model, and preparation of field sketches and Bulletins. One of the biggest challenges was in the detailing of the exterior windows, which changed during the course of construction and involved input from exterior skin consultants and engineers in its final resolution. RENDERING OF REAR ELEVATION A similar color palette on the front and rear lends continuity, while the material changes. The terraces on the rear have the effect of diminishing the mass of the building to be in keeping with the ad-hoc type additions at the rear of the adjacent rowhouses, and to allow light and air into all of the living spaces. Detailing of a brick screen at the front elevation and a cantilevered oriole bay are some features that were very carefully considered throughout the design process.

P STREET CONDOS STUDIO MB ANTICIPATED COMPLETION: Summer 2018 Role: Project Architect/Project Manager This 9-unit, 10,000 sf condo building is located in Dupont Circle faced the challenge of an empty site situated among various historic buildings. The facade seeks to mimic the fenestration patterns and massing on the front while remaining of its own time. On the back, a stepped series of terraces allow each unit to gain access to outdoor patio space. This cascading effect

allows a more playful side, in contrast with the formal front elevation. This project had to go through Historic and Zoning approvals, and is designed to comply with DC Green Construction Code. Currently, it is out for Permit, and construction is anticipated to begin in summer of 2017.

KUNZANG PALYUL CHOLING BUDDHIST TEMPLE MCGRAW BAGNOLI ARCHITECTS/STUDIO MB with CAMPION HRUBY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS CONCEPT STUDY COMPLETION: November 2014 PHASE I: Ongoing Role: Staff Designer / Project Architect Kunzang Palyul Choling is a Buddhist organization located in the Agricultural Reserve in Maryland. Initially a small organization located within an old farmhouse, the congregation reached substantial size and was temporarily closed by the Fire Marshall, prompting their procurement of design services. Initially tasked solely with getting the temple and residence operational, StudioMB quickly convinced KPC that the design of

a master plan would better serve their increased size and changed needs. After a series of work sessions, the concept of an agrarian campus was formed, with different components for living, teaching, and meditating. Phase I of the project, which includes a dining hall and residential facility, is currently undergoing preliminary pricing.

KPC was extremely interested inOctober the use of COMMUNITY PRESENTATION 12, 2016 green design and technology. The dining facility incorporates the use of a solar chimney, which allows air to passively flow through the building, reducing their dependence on mechanical heating and cooling systems.

RANDOLPH MACON THETA CHI FRATERNITY MCGRAW BAGNOLI ARCHITECTS COMPLETION: June 2015 ROLE: Staff Designer Randolph Macon engaged McGraw Bagnoli Architects in the fall of 2013 to design a new Fraternity house for Theta Chi fraternity, which had been demolished in a campus fire that year. Working within the restrictions of a long and narrow site, but taking advantage of the strategic relationship between the campus edge, immediately adjacent to the Admissions building, the

Fraternity house provides a welcoming place to build community. McGraw Bagnoli Architects was responsible for the house from inception, through completion, and the design was fully integrated within and without. MBA provided architectural and landscape design services, as well as fabric, fixtures, and finishes on the interior. photographs by Tom Holdsworth

Due to safety concerns and a tight budget, the college requested an exterior stair be considered. To allow security yet visibility for any security officers, an open lattice scheme was determined that lights up like a beacon at night, illuminating activity inside, while maintaining a degree of privacy.
