PO RT FO LIO. Nikhila Mariam Babu
2021
HELLO !! My name is Nikhila Mariam Babu, am an architectural graduate from Reva University School of Architecture. To discover different things with curiosity and to broaden my horizon is especially important to me. It is my hope that the work I do will improve and propel livability in urban areas while creating a more environmentally conscious public which not only understand the environmental issues we face, but is actively trying to lessen their environmental impact. I accept this quality will just turn out to be increasingly significant in the coming years and decades, and I trust it will be our duty as designers of the world we live in to encourage these practices now so we will be prepared for what's to come. And this is a quote that i want to remember and live by :
” ARCHITECTURE IS NO MORE THAN A PLACE WHERE EVERYTHING IS MADE FROM THE FRAGMENTS OF OTHER PLACES ”

MineCraft
No longer just a hole in the ground Thesis Project
As human footprint increases on earth, it results in countless open wounds to the landscape. Highly manufactured, altered and deserted land of collapsed ecological systems, exposed stones, and little vegetation cover and causes further negative impacts on the land. This project explores possible design solutions to reclaim and transform an abandoned iron ore mine in the Goan region into an Eco-Resort. This is to bring awareness of the mining industry in Goa which dates to pre-1961. The resort will also host a photo gallery depicting the same. This project will highlight that Goa is more than just beaches. The spaces will be designed to include open to public zones and private resort areas. The viewers will be directed to see the essence of the mining pits from the botanical garden. There is also quarry diving in one of the two pits for the adventure lovers. The spaces will be designed using the concept of Balcao which we find in Goan Houses and the benches we see in a mine pit. And as the inflow of tourists has been increasing rapidly in Goa this project will be a nice spot for a vacation.
Nature was the dominant agent in the transformation of the landscape. • Cities. were formed • Then man became dominant • Quarry-scape formed
CONCEPT - WABI SABI Wabi sabi is an ancient aesthetic philosophy rooted in Zen Buddhism, particularly the tea ceremony, a ritual of purity and simplicity in which masters prized bowls that were handmade and irregularly shaped, with uneven glaze, cracks, and a perverse beauty in their deliberate imperfection.

Product Design
The ILHA is a product that combines the best of a rocker and a recliner. The ultimate lounge furniture for the present day scenario. The present day scenario has changed the lifestyle of the common man drastically. Social distancing is the norm now and so are extremely preventative measures such as partial or complete lock-downs. To cope with such harsh and strict conditions while at the same time keeping up with work and school has been a tough nut to crack. Technology and the Internet has thus occupied a commendable part of our lives in aiding us through Online platforms. Work from home or school from home started out on the bed with the laptop propped up on a small table. As designers our goal is to re-imagine the BED which arguably is the most important piece of furniture at homes. The bed becomes a universal space where we sleep, work, read and even eat sometimes. Re-imagining this universality of the bed and incorporating it into a rocker / recliner to provide the end user with the utmost comfort and leisure. Our product THE ILHA has been designed to overcome most of the challenges faced due to work from home and its impact on our day to day activities.
Concerns Addressed
Body posture The unhealthy postures we put our body though to compensate for the continuous sitting in one place. Sitting position Extended screen time means sitting in the same position for a long time frame causing health issues. Laziness Work starts systematically but end on the bed. The lack of movement and the excess comfort of being at home leads to being lazy. Staying focused Background activities causing auditory disturbances and distractions.
AIM: To re-imagine the bed What is it? The main aim of the project is to design furniture that helps people at home, in their daily life thereby design for all. This object can take up values of multi functionality. enhancing the levels of comfort and functionality It's key asset is to provide a cozy cocoon-like atmosphere to the end user How does it work? It is just about as basic as any chair, just sit back and relax The special features will include a flexible phone/tablet/laptop holder, a bottle holder & a fold-able table to provide a fresh and comfortable experience. Value & potential Work or study from the comfort and informality of our homes has increased the productivity of individuals and the quality of work This indicates that sitting in one position for an extended period of time is neither comfortable nor healthy, not to mention the numerous inconveniences caused by being confined to a cubicle or cabin assigned to the individual Online classes especially start off with a disciplined seated approach whereas ending with us lying down or reclining back on pillows, Even if one is binging on #1 favorite show their position changes frequently with time. Our product is designed to cater to all these file quirks of the individual thereby relieving the individual from the bitter experience of sitting upright for a long time. Novelty: The pirouette is a full tum of the body on the tip of the toe or the foot in an artful dance. This needs a huge load of effort by the performer but this product will have a simple design that will have comfort as well as relaxation for the user. The product o t comes under the category of chairs, this is a whole new concept of the combination of a or a recliner chair and a rocking chair. A recliner chair ejects its anterior where our feet can be placed, in this product the anterior will be able to stretch as well as be easy to handle and light in weight. A rocking chair gives a to and fro movement, so, in this product, it will have a slight to and fro movement where a stopper will be placed at the bottom so the movement can be controlled. The new product called 2017 (hal-abeoji) will have features that can be folded at certain c angles, it will not end at the neck level but will continue throughout as a shading device that will be used to place electronic items when in use for the purpose of entertainment that is adjustable at the tip of the framework, A cabinet light will be placed for the purpose of reading or work so that the user need not bring or connect a different light source. The whole chair will be supported with a cushion for better support of the spinal cord that will prevent injuries too, Unlike other chairs, this will function in many ways and will be lighter in weight and easier to handle
Zero Gravity Position According to NASA’s development of the MSIS(Man-Systems Integration Standards), the angles regarding the spine are 128° (+/-7°) between the torso and thigh, and 133 (+/-8°) between the hamstrings and calf. When we are outside of these general degrees of alignment, the spine suffers increase the risk of injury. These all represent static spine postures which have the potential to negatively impact the spine by weakening core stabilizing muscles, decrease circulation throughout the spine, and increase inter-vertebral compression. Therefore finding solutions for back and neck pain requires a combination of the Neutral Posture Position with our 24 hour approach for a personalized strategy.
