‘Mahatma Mandir Musuem’ at Gandhinagar

Tarun Tahiliani to Design for Apollo Hospitals

Mahatma Mandir Museum, also called Dandi Kutir, was opened to public recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project was completed in a record time of seven months in Gandhi Nagar. The momentous project is conceptualised by the Government of Gujarat and delivered with great speed and quality and sensitivity by Shapoorji Pallonji Engineering & Construction (SPE&C) on design & build basis. SPE&C has given a fine concept and deep touch of art & technology. It is a unique architectural and experiential edifice providing visitors a forward-looking space to contemplate Gandhian principles and reflect on singular and collective futures. The architecture is iconic for three elements: An immersive multimedia museum housed in the Salt Mound christened “Dandi Kutir”, the conical concrete shell symbolic of the Salt Satyagraha of 1930; a cable-stayed bridge inspired by the Charkha crowned by a windmill at the top of the bridge pylon and a Gandhi Garden commemorating Gandhiji’s life through 79 iconic Narendra Modi PM of India, sculptures/artworks. Anandiben Patel, CM of Gujarat and Instead of using only exhibit Subodh Dixit, Executive Director artefacts and telling Shapoorji Pallonji at the inauguration conventional hagiographies, the museum uses the modern technological innovations to cultivate new dialogues around Gandhiji. Excellent design and engineering skills and delivery-driven approach is visible in the speedy construction of the Mahatma Mandir Museum project as well. All slabs in the salt mound were casted in 20 days. Design & Engineering team researched extensively to pick unique and best fitting material for every part of the building, e.g. very special Korea make material is used in the twist. Eight multimedia rooms were readied with hardware and software synchronisation accomplished in flat 15 days’ time. All light fittings of the museum building were installed in just 10 days. On the outside, the hardscape work of 5400 sqm was completed in 20 days which included mound creation, pathways, tree plantation, etc.

Apollo Hospitals, one of the pioneers in healthcare, has roped in designer Tarun Tahiliani, the noted Indian fashion designer, for setting up a very unconventional yet soothing lounge area for patients and their families at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. A reception, an information centre, an elegant transition and passageway would be designed by him. The lobby would be a place where families could rest or wait, a place where hospital functions or felicitations could happen, a spot where people felt nurtured as a reflection of values of the hospital. The concept of care encompasses the totality of the atmosphere - not only the colours, the fabrics, the sights, sounds, and smells, certainly, but also the attitudes and accommodations made around patient privacy. “The first thought that came to my mind was that there was no reason why a hospital lobby should not have good taste. The only challenge was that because it was a semi outdoor space, how to integrate it with the beautiful trees behind, keep it cool, let it feel like it was indoor, let it feel like it was welcoming, let it feel cosy and also be a space that people will

like to be and feel calm, because normally when people are at hospital lobbies they are quite stressed, because somebody close to them is unwell and that is definitely not a nice feeling. Keeping all those aspects in mind, we worked on the lobby”, recalls Tahiliani. While the lobby meets all the requirements of the brief from the client, it also reflects the spirit and feel of the city of Nizams in its shades of browns and topazes and in dull greys like the variety and shades of natural rocks in the city. In its landscape design, with nature as a predominant theme, the attentions of the designer was to detail ensuring patients have their desired privacy and yet feel comfortable in a personalised environment. A subtle yet intricate woodwork interiors adorned with Art by Bomen, globally renowned for invoking positive feelings are what sets the area apart from the rest of the facility.

SVPCPL Bags Andhra Pradesh Capital Project Hyderabad-based Satya Vani Projects and Consultants Private Limited (SVPCPL) has bagged the contract to prepare the master plan of the temporary capital of Andhra Pradesh. The agency has been given three weeks to submit a master plan, layout plan, interior design, concept plan and details of the drawings of the buildings to set up the temporary capital. Based on the plans and designs, INCAP (Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd) will again call for tenders from agencies to take up construction of the temporary capital. The tender process will be completed in another three weeks. SVPCPL will also act as the project management consultant and ensure that six lakh square feet of built-up area is constructed by June. AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu wants important offices shifted from Hyderabad to the temporary capital in Andhra Pradesh by June 7, a day before the Telugu Desam government

completes one year in office after bifurcation of the state. Satya Vani, with its headquarters at Khairatabad in Hyderabad, was one among the five short-listed companies of the total 11 firms in the race. “The company qualified in the technical stage and it has been finalised to design the temporary capital of AP,” said INCAP vice-chairman Sambasiva Rao. The capital will accommodate offices of the AP government to be shifted from Hyderabad. The location of the temporary capital is yet to be finalised. Though Amaravati township layout in Guntur district was earlier decided as the location, the state government has changed its mind. Japanese giant Fuji Electric has agreed to set up a smart grid near Andhra Pradesh's new capital city to help the state government to monitor the energy consumption and forecast the demand, aimed at developing an efficient energy management system.

Planet 3 Studios Bags International Award

Mumbai based Planet 3 studios bagged the international award for top institutional theatre design in 2014. Projects for this prestigious award are primarily selected with importance being stressed on concept quality of concept, creative effort, aesthetic quality and performance. Thousands of top firms from across the globe vied for the international awards. Kalhan Mattoo Director, Planet 3 studios said that

new techniques in regards to parametric and computational design tools have been used for this project. Considering not many world class theatres in India, this is a small but significant step in that direction, he added. The auditorium is a state of the art design containing 300 seats located in Central Mumbai. Cutting edge work has been done to the element of space with special emphasis given to the same. Considering that sound deserves primacy in hierarchy of considerations. Wave patterns, were simulated within the given structural volume to understand its effect as it travelled through. A technique that allows designers to set performance parameters and the design output comes out of the computer on basis of the set constrains. Multiple forms finding experiments were conducted and studied to understand the effect of each design option on the sound carrying ability of the space. The design is evolved out of multiple simulations.

Workshop on Zero Energy Buildings at IIT Mumbai Techfest, IIT Bombay in association with ARCHIPIDA - ASPIRE conducted a Workshop on Net Zero Energy Buildings at IIT Bombay on January 3 and 4 as a part of the Techfest. About 200 undergraduate and postgraduate architects, and engineers from over 80 colleges across south-Asia attended the workshop focusing on ‘Green Building Design & Simulation'. A Net Zero Building is a building with zero net energy consumption, meaning the total amount of energy used by the building in the annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site. Its design include some basic elements which should work together like properly oriented windows, thermal mass, distribution mechanisms and control strategies. Through this workshop the participants learned to simulate the details of a passive solar home in different configurations until the design fits the site as well as the owner’s budget, aesthetic preferences and performance requirements. Here the analysis capabilities integrate with tools that enable you to visualize and simulate a building’s performance within the context of its environment. Urban areas are responsible for over 70 percent of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, mostly from buildings. Over the next two decades, an area roughly equal to 60 per cent of the total building stock of the world is projected to be rebuilt in urban areas worldwide. This provides an unprecedented opportunity to reduce fossil fuel CO2 emissions by setting the global building sector on a path to phase out CO2 emissions by 2050.

rom integrating the latest technology to increased collaboration among co-workers, work environments are changing and so are the ways offices are furnished. The latest trends are reflected in the interior design of Head Office for PR Hub & Business Hub, Bangalore by Pentades Studio, understanding the needs of modern day employees and invoking collaboration, flexibility, mobility and more. Considering all these aspects, designing a Public Relations and marketing communications agency full of young minds was a challenge. The brief was to create a trendy office space for the youth with no compromise on the number of workstations for company’s future growth plan.

f

The designers went to the basics to make three distinct zones with an organised approach: Expressive lobby and exhibit space, management space, and work space for the staff. For a rectangular space of 5,000-Sq ft, a curvilinear wall with the inscription of “Direction and Delivery” reflects the company’s contributions to its clients. The reception designed with this approach mingles with the outside by telling a story to its visitors. The outside place is planned in such a way that a visitor coming in cannot see the entire office unless he is meant to but he still gets a glimpse of the activities the company does, based on the reception design. This way the visitor is exposed to the activities of the company and the privacy is also maintained.

The management area is well segregated from the workstations with a visual access through a graphical corridor that has testimonials from clients. This inspires the team to set higher targets for themselves. Client participation as a part of the design team has helped in creating an integrated space.

Besides planning the functional zones, the strategic application of the clients branding is reflected in the transition areas that leads to the workspace. The flowing ceiling and the circular staircase takes the serious corporate spaces to an area of freedom in the mezzanine floor. Here the staff can relax or engage in brainstorming by completely cutting out of the general working environment.

The specially designed solid brand colour lamp shades dropping down from the trays create the illumination more personal. This concept is to highlight that every desk is important. Low height coloured glass separators for workstations compliment the oneness of the team. Carefully designed large blank spaces at walls and columns are covered with graphics that compliment vibrancy in the workspace.

A Trendy Office Text & images: courtesy, the designer

Head Office for PR Hub & Business Hub, Bangalore, Karnataka, India Pentades Studio The workspace is designed with minimalist approach with the elements that create a different space altogether. Expensive false ceiling is avoided. Use of electrical cable trays in parallel to create an imaginary ceiling and to camouflage the fans above has given it a different dimension of visual space.

A good work environment creates a state of mind that is conducive to productivity. Transparency and accountability were the key words while designing spaces for their own Design Studio by Designplus Associates Services Pvt. Ltd (DPA) at Okhla Industrial Estate, New Delhi. The designers wanted to demonstrate this by extensive use of glass that took away visual barriers, thus creating a light and open space from where every work desk had a view of the surrounding greens. Functional yet timeless design was essence of the design approach.

W

hile designing office space for their own Design Studio at Okhla Industrial Estate, New Delhi, The architects from Designplus Associates Services Pvt. Ltd faced the dilemma of an appropriate design approach. The haphazard structural elements on the floor plate had to be settled. To integrate and use them as design elements was the obvious choice. An unstructured band in orange (DPA AND SPAZZIO colour) connects the structural elements creating a definite design language. This is set against an open cell ceiling which does not intend concealing the services. Large wall graphics in white and orange along with black & white project pictures with orange highlights the otherwise simple staircase. As one enters the building, a terrazzo floor in the reception area sets the tone of the office. Grey slate rectangles set in charcoal resin was an experiment that gave a spectacular result. A Zaha Hadid design bench and Vitra design chairs along with DPA logo set into the wall panel pattern , providing the colour punch in the otherwise monochromatic colour palette of the reception. Black & white or monochrome is the underlying approach to colour in the entire office. This is punctuated by graphics, art, pin up panels, ceiling elements, furniture etc, keeping the use of colour very controlled. Simplicity of lines and colour palette helps create a timeless ambience. The cafĂŠ is an extremely colourful space in contrast to the rest of the office. Recipe graphics, wall paper and colourful tables define the cafĂŠ. fact file: project location client interior designer

Creating Brand Identity DuPont Corporate Office, DLF Cyber City, Gurgaon, Haryana, India Designplus Associates Services Pvt. Ltd (DPA) Office Interiors for the DuPont Corporate Office, DLF Cyber City, Gurgaon, Haryana, was designed by Designplus Associates Services Pvt. Ltd (DPA), keeping in mind the client’s corporate colour scheme. They used bold colour scheme of white interspersed with red in the project.

W

hile planning the Office Interiors for the DuPont Corporate Office , at DLF Cyber City, Gurgaon, Haryana, the designers from Designplus Associates Services Pvt. Ltd (DPA) followed the corporate colour scheme of the company. The client wanted a state-ofthe-art office which was in tune with the times. They were also very particular in the use of their corporate colours and Corian which is a solid acrylic surface manufactured by them. Safety was to be given top priority, which were to reflect in the interior design and the MEP services. The main challenge in doing up this 20,000-Sq ft interior was to efficiently use all space despite the fragmented floor space. The space is dynamic with a sense of mystery that unfolds as one moves from the reception to the meeting areas. The designers designed a space for approx 182 work stations and 8 high-tech meeting rooms, plus a big conference facility, with safety norms being paramount. DuPont`s material Corian was used sparingly in this project. Corian is known for its plasticity and use of it needed to demonstrate just that. Hence a plastic form with fluid lines in the third dimension was created as the public space, which forms a kind of hinge between the two bays of work spaces. An amorphous, non defined form that twists and turns with a synchronized ceiling immediately breaks the monotony and ‘boxiness’ of the lift lobby. An all white scheme punctuated with red screams DuPont which creates the perfect brand identity. The Cafeteria at Dupont is an interesting feature with a hanging/floating ceiling, giving it an enigmatic effect.

Storages are concealed behind a textured relief wall of wood. This absorbs the extensive filing requirements as well as the services. The cabins are scaled and sized with flexible glass verticals and corian horizontals. The cabin is an experiment to redefine workspace inside by eliminating the inside circulation space. It borrows the outside passage to sit across the table inside. This also makes the cabin more accessible, literally and workwise. A large central island, a corian monolith, serves as a workspace for six. This piece is specially designed to house lighting, electrical and other plug-ins. A separate space for stationery, a unique space for plants and a smart plinth for individual lights are allocated. These lights are long LED strips especially for workstation task-lighting, minimizing screen glares and light pollution. Touch controls further enhance the technology edge to the space. This workspace extends to the informal canteen and conference space that spans betweenthe pantry and printing facility. This space also had a glass wall with plants at the bottom and natural light from top. Metal walls with magnets give an innovative and informal definition to the space. Stools and small tables in this space function the flexibility. The conference room is the most fundamental requirement of the project. It was to be used primarily for virtual meetings. The vertical surfaces are glass writing boards or sound absorbing textures. So is the carpet flooring and ceiling reliefs. State of the art conferencing equipment, smart boards and lighting controls enable this compact space as a comprehensive solution. MD’s office is the most impressive volume of the project. This is the workspace of the owner, the chairman of the group. The double heights with bare concrete walls give a distinct ‘designer’ definition to

he Microsoft's office for the IDC- the R&D division at Bangalore, by Architect from DSP Designs, is a Pilot project of the company to implement the work place Guidelines for Microsoft offices in India. The entire floor plate is planned in such a way that 15- 35 people work together in proximity as a community. Each community is a self-sufficient "neighborhood" with its space and functional requirements of workspace, formal and informal collaboration spaces, meeting rooms, focus rooms and phone booths. They are independent, yet they are interconnected by break out spaces and informal spaces interspersed between two community neighborhoods. This planning gave us an even spread of all the required facilities for the overall floor plate. The layout plan comprises seven such neighborhoods which are around a central hub space known as the "Microsoft Hub & The Garage”. This space becomes the core of the entire office and is a multi-discipline space which can be used for individual work, team meetings, relaxation, recreation and even hold a town hall meeting for about 75 people. This space is planned in as an open space with different variety of seating, pantry counter, indoor gaming – foos ball, x-box etc. This area also had two existing cutouts in the slab acting as skylight and also allowing visual connect to the lower and upper floors. One of the cut out is treated with a vertical green wall to bring in nature inside. Another cutout integrates an interactive digital installation. This is one of the areas

A Balance of Work & Relaxation Zones Shweta Grover, Associate Vice President, Corporate Real Estate – North, DSP Design Associates Q. What are the latest trends in office design? A. The real estate has become a very expensive asset. To deal with this constraint, the cabins and cubicles are done away with. Also the work culture has changed and organization structures have become flatter (instead of hierarchical), significance of collaboration and knowledge transfer has been recognized which has lead to more open spaces, virtual collaboration has shrunk the world, which is reflected in the office designs. Also, a balance of work and relaxation zones is planned in the office to provide the typical knowledge worker the necessary environment to help them achieve optimum productivity. Q. What would be the preferred styles for indoor and outdoor lighting in office designs? A. Lighting creates the ambience in a place. Indoor office lighting changes from work area to collaboration areas to display and conferencing area. For workspace, crisp white light, uniformly lighting the work desk with right Lux, without any shadows is a must. Ceiling designs are often complemented with the selection of light fittings. For special conferencing areas, special dimming and other lighting are planned to support the audio visual equipments. Other areas which demand a hospitality environments and comfort / collaboration a soft ambient light with accentuated decorative fixtures add character to the individual spaces Q. What are the modern trends in the design and materials for flooring & ceiling in office interiors? A. Modern office design globally has moved to the use of carpet flooring for work areas. It is better in terms of acoustic to manage footfall, quicker to install, easier for day to day maintenance and last but not the least, brings in warmth to the whole workspace. Ceilings again have become modular with lot of design and material possibilities. It helps manage and plan the false ceiling services. It is definitely quicker to install and maintain over the time. It facilities access to service above the ceiling which is a must Q. Briefly explain the latest in wall designs for office projects? A. Most wall surfaces nowadays are made out of dry partition system using gypsum, MDF board with a variety of possible finishes options for final finishes. Depending upon need of the space and the design intent, wall treatments vary from plain painted gypsum surfaces, to texture paint, laminate claddings, veneer treatments, metal sheets, color back glass cladding, fabric paneling, sustainable ecophon boards, cork sheets, writable wall papers, acoustic and magnetic wall papers or simply decorative wall papers; List is endless and growing by the day as the imagination of designers. Q. Please brief on the preferred furniture & furnishing designs for office spaces? A. Furniture trends are mostly on the contemporary lines and simple clean line design. Easy to use maintenance friendly finishes like laminates, veneer, and melamine finish are preferred. Modular system furniture is being designed to project and client needs in various ways and possibilities are quite and endless. Fabric finishes again follow sustainability and maintenance criteria.

The process initiated with multiple interactions with Microsoft to understand their operations, work culture and requirements. Understanding of site constraints especially since the building was an existing building with floor height challenges came next. The design and the concept was developed keeping in mind the requirements both functional and cultural. Ease of construction, time and cost management with emphasis on quality became an intrinsic part of the process. The true identity of the neighbor community concept developed for this project lies in smaller groups of people working more cohesively as a team. The teams are independent and when need to connect together; can do so through the ‘Central Hub’ which flows through the entire space. Microsoft employees continuously engage in the “Microsoft Garage" for team interactions or even recreation. Each space including break outs and pantries where designed by multi functionality in mind with collaborative furniture, acoustical privacy pods and Wi-Fi connectivity. Thus enabling people to work from anywhere. Environmental sustainability is their CSR and fact file: right from planning maximum natural light for project the employees penetrating in the workspace location to Bio walls in interior spaces and the use of client recyclable materials for the construction, interior designer Green design became a driving force for this architect project and the same is LEED adhered. other consultants The result of the design and process led to a cohesive work community where each space is efficient and flexible.“Form follows function” philosophy ensured each design element's utility. As the planning of the spaces in done in more of random manner flooring patterns reflects the same ideology. The entire of open office is given a splash of color by using a very contemporary striped carpet, the closed spaces like focus, phone and meeting rooms are defined by using solid accent colors.A lot of attention is given to integrate the graphics, signages and unique features in the office. Microsoft branding was worked on extensively on customized graphics and video walls. Graphics are customized by taking feedback from the end users , where the idea was to bring in culture, business, information and fun together in different zones. Amit Krishn Gulati is a designer with a multifaceted oeuvre spanning 20 years and encompassing new product development, healthcare, hotels, builtenvironments and installations. Amit studied industrial design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad and is the founder and director of Incubis Consultants, one of India’s leading design and innovation consulting firms with a diverse mix of global companies, SMEs as well as start-ups as clients. In addition to leading the team at Incubis, Amit is a visiting faculty at The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, IIT Roorkee and The National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He is the recipient of several design awards from organizations such as, the Plastindia Foundation, Indian Society of Lighting Engineers, VM&RD, Art Centre Europe, Sony Corporation Japan, National Gallery of Modern Art and the Ashok Jain Foundation. Incubis has a talented team of over 50 professionals in Design, Engineering and Architecture.

eepak Fertilizers & Petrochemicals Limited (DFPCL), headquartered in Pune, is one of India’s leading 500 companies with a turnover of over USD 500 Million. The new corporate office for DFPCL at Pune, Maharashtra is designed by Incubis Consultants with the key objective of crafting a contemporary workplace that inspires innovative thinking, enables informal interactions and exchange of ideas and energetic collaboration in an environment that exudes openness, transparency, equality, caring and accessibility for all.

d

It is one of the rare instances where a workplace is co-created through a very close and intensive partnership between the actual users and the designers. The Incubis team was given the opportunity to engage with teams from all levels to understand their expectations for the new office to ensure that the eventual outcome meets their aspirations. The Project was executed by DFPCL’S in house team with close co-ordination between the Design and Project team.

The key inspiration for the design concept was of a fertile ‘greenhouse’ where new ideas are welcomed and allowed to flourish – an apt metaphor for one of the country’s leading producers of chemicals & fertilizers! To meet this challenging objective, the plans have been configured around circular cores that act as fluid meeting and break out spaces for chance encounters that lead to unexpected cross-fertilization and convergence of new thoughts. A wide variety of engagement zones in the form of a large multifunctional cafeteria (with sufficient space for recreation, town hall meetings and even film screenings), multiple training rooms, libraries and state of the art videoconferencing suites, all contribute to deliver a corporate culture that is team-focused and holds learning & sharing at the heart of all its activities. Despite the need for a high level of spatial efficiency (with consequent high occupation densities) there is an all pervasive sense of lightness

esign for the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) consumer healthcare’s new head office in Gurgaon, Haryana designed by Space Matrix Design Consultants is a tech enabled cabin-less Smart Office -- a completely flexible workspace. The functions are organized as neighborhoods with no assigned seats. Employees can choose to sit wherever they like in within their neighborhood or anywhere within the two floors of the office space. Most part of the office area is dedicated to collaboration to encourage communication. The spaces have been planned as destinations to boost circulation and movement, encouraging incidental collaboration.

d

The design concept for the office is an inspiration from the GSK ‘heart’ logo and brings alive the company values of transparency, respect, integrity and consumer first and support the company’s vision to ‘do more, feel better and live longer’. The design has been envisioned as the human body with a heart, brain, veins and skin. The planning has been based on concentric circles. At the core is the ‘heart’ i.e. the reception that inspires employees and visitors alike to ‘feel better’. The brand comes to life here with a huge veneer portal in the shape of GSK’s heart that leads the way into the main office space. As the function of the heart, the reception is the life source of the entire space. The movement and flow of the internal staircase connecting the

The reception table made of ‘stainless steel and corian’ has a curvilinear feature that flows with the overall flow of the space. The nerves form the second layer, creating a central circulation running throughout the office and connecting the various areas. This circulation space not only facilitates movement but also creates opportunities for conversations and interaction along the way. The nerves are represented by wooden lattice in the ceiling that runs as a consistent feature through the office. The lights suspended from this lattice have been conceptualized as blood cells. Lockers, repro areas and area to embed the ‘listening labs’ have been designed to promote collaboration. Architecture Update February 2015

The third layer forms the brain of the office. The meeting rooms, boardroom, huddle spaces and quiet room (where the work happens) forms the brain of the space. The meeting zone has been designed keeping in mind that these spaces are used for ‘planned collaboration’. A separate meeting zone is created which has a direct access from the reception so visitors need not be taken into the work areas. The design seamlessly integrates the technology needed to support planned collaboration. The entire office is Wi-Fi enabled and the meeting rooms are fitted with latest technology for remote collaboration and live meetings.

The final layer that wraps around the space forms the skin i.e. the workspace. This is where work comes to life through collaboration, cocreation and execution. Simply put, the space is designed to bring people together. Embracing the open floor plan allows GSK to amplify the collective talent of its firm. Instead of using the traditional desks, Herman Miller’s benching system is used in work spaces. This further facilitates mentoring, building camaraderie and bonds. To collaborate, employees have a range of options from one-to one setting to more social spaces like team tables. For a quick discussion they can move to the small huddle spaces interspersed between workstation clusters. The coffee lounge and cafeteria are other social spots. For larger team discussions, team tables have been strategically placed. The Managing Director also sits in the open in this cabin less office. To come together in a more social setting, the employees can choose to go to small coffee points on the floor that are also equipped with Wi-Fi and plasma screens for a quick ‘display and discuss’.

The design is also sensitive to the fact that good work sometimes requires focus and solitude. Employees can retreat and concentrate in quiet rooms that are sprinkled all across the work area for private calls and confidential conversations. The work area also has the advantage of natural light that pours in from the all-glass façade and access to a breath-taking view. Natural light has a positive effect on productivity and is a natural mood elevator. This covers the third aspect of GSK’s mission i.e. to help people to ‘live longer’.

The interiors are dressed up in colors of the company’s Winning Formula in wall graphics and solids with the heartbeat pattern. Keeping in mind GSK’s commitment to a sustainable future, all materials used are green certified products. The construction process was carried out with proper waste management to ensure the office is able to get a LEED Platinum rating.

Reinterpreting Spaces Office of BMR Advisors, Parel, Mumbai, India Salil Ranadive Architects (SR+A)

The Office for BMR Advisors at Parel, Mumbai, Maharashtra designed by Salil Ranadive Architects (SR+A) offers a contemporary interpretation while responding to its historic context. The effort is to create a regionally sensitive interior environment while simultaneously engaging with the universal aspirations of contemporary global modernism.

056 Architecture Update February 2015

t

he Office of BMR Advisors, designed by Salil Ranadive Architects (SR+A) has emerged out of the resurrection of an existing warehouse structure in the new business node of Parel, Mumbai. The building is clad with treated sandstone to resonate with its surroundings and a double height glass façade for the entrance to maximize day light. It is partly capped by a tensile roof-over the roof top dining facility, which also acts as a thermal shield for the building thereby minimizing cooling loads. One enters a double height glazed spine that connects the rhythm of the external fenestration to the inside, drawing natural day light into the two levels of the office thereby minimizing the use of artificial lighting and energy. The flooring is polished limestone. The wall behind the reception table is remnant of the original warehouse – and is rendered to be recognised as such. The white on the walls with the brick clad backdrop, Ficus plants, marble cubes, Champa tree high above on the vertical divide and art in form of floor standing focus light render the place with a soft welcome element.

With over two decades of rigorous practice, he has to his credit a spectrum of several noted projects - that span a wide range of scales and typologies, and are located across a wide canvas of geographical regions, which he continues to build upon through his recently established firm Salil Ranadive Architects (SR+A). His engagement with Architecture & Urbanism goes beyond his practice. He is an active Juror and Advisor at the College of Engineering Pune, the Chairman of FAAA - the alumni association of his alma mater, and a vocal member of the City’s architectural community.

The business centre and staff offices at the upper level are linked to the spine by a dramatic interconnecting stairs at either ends. To make the feeling more corporate and polished at the business centre, the sandstone is replaced with an agglomerated stone of the similar colour and more corporate lines flow in easily as false ceiling cuts with indirect lighting, glazed partitions and the formal setting in each room. A few meeting rooms have access to a private terrace – embellished splendidly by the extravagant flourish of surrounding trees in the compound.

With various parts of the work space overlooking into the entrance spine, from diverse points – the potential to use it as a gathering space (for events, group discussions etc.) is easily accomplished. Daylight streaming in across the expansive staircase enhances the experience.

Parallel to the entrance area and along the opposite edge are the cabins for the partners, but the main space is occupied by the open office for the staff spread over two levels - ground and mezzanine. The ceiling has been kept to a minimum essentially to cover utility lines in order to enjoy the 14 ft height at each level. It has not been covered like a ‘false ceiling’ but rather kept like a warehouse effect itself. The open office flooring is finished in black Cuddapah with a random blue mosaic line radiating out of a central ‘heart’.

The inner volume of the office is virtually limitless – it carries the eye vertically through the Axis Mundi of the inner court, and horizontally across to the entrance spine through both the lower and upper levels.

At the ‘heart’ of the office is a large Ficus tree under a skylight elevating the library into a knowledge centre – evocative of a ‘guru’ seated beneath a tree while imparting knowledge to his ‘shishyas’. The effort Architecture Update February 2015

is to create a regionally sensitive interior environment while simultaneously engaging with the universal aspirations of contemporary global modernism. This breathing space is a double height area talking again of volumes even inside the office. Move up the interconnecting stairs to the next level, the terrace opens itself into a large spread-out version of a lavish roof garden. The flooring is Sandstone textured tiles with a tensile roof over the cafeteria having an eclectic mix of colours in the form of chairs. The greenery around owes itself to Champa tree and various species of plants, bonsai, etc. The terrace can also be reached by a circular terrace adjoining the staff area on the second level. This is called the Red Terrace, owning to red coloured chairs and floor mounted outdoor swing. Though it is an office situated in the very heart of the congested inner city, but surrounded on all sides with terraces and filled with silence and light.

Throughout the residence ‘The Mango Tree’ at Pune, Maharashtra, designed by Studio Infinity, a common material palette is used. Various spaces are designed as per their individual functional requirements, but are connected to each other through a common design vocabulary.

verall design vocabulary of the residence ‘The Mango Tree’ at Pune, Maharashtra, designed by Studio Infinity is very minimalist in terms of materials at the same time it has a bold impact on space quality. As one moves across rooms and spaces, the nuances are addressed keeping in mind individuals who are going to occupy that space. But the focus of the house and its occupants, even today remains ‘The Mango Tree’ which is just outside the house. The project primarily was to renovate an existing ground + one storied dwelling sitting on a very tight plot. The house shared one wall in common with the adjoining property and upper floor was accessible from a staircase outside the house. Moreover, the plinth was about a meter down than the abutting road. All these factors became strong points to be addressed in the new designs. The design process started by re-arranging existing rooms and integrating the whole house as a single unit. The external staircase now became an integral part of the house. This eventually has turned out to be a common visual link, which not only connects the two floors but also dominates the overall space aesthetics. The staircase is defined by cantilevered steps jetting out from a textured blue backdrop and is overwhelmed by light filtering through the skylight. Understanding the client’s brief, a floor wise segregation was proposed with common family spaces and guest room on ground floor while bedrooms and other related spaces planned on the first floor. In order to tackle level difference between the road and existing plinth, living room was located at far end of the plot. This helped to obtain a gradual slope as one walks down from the main gate till entrance door of the house. This transition is marked by dense plantation on the high

staircase - an integral part of the house

As the designers kept working on the technical front to retrofit new spaces in the existing envelop, there was one element on the site that subconsciously kept attracting attention time and again. This was a fully grown ‘Mango Tree’ in backyard of the house. Eventually, the designers found a focus for their designs. Now the interior spaces started communicating with the mango tree. On the ground floor, a rectangular volume is subtracted from the dining area, bringing in the outdoors in the form of a water body. This subtracted mass is enclosed by glass on three sides in order to establish a strong visual connection with the mango tree. On the upper floor a similar volume is added to the existing mass which becomes the puja room. This again is enclosed by glass on three sides, wherein one actually gets a feeling of sitting amidst foliage of the tree. On lower floor kitchen and guest room are located on the road side. This was basically done as we wanted the living space to extend and merge with the outdoor space in the rear side. Both these rooms are segregated from the living-dining area by a small passage, partially hidden behind a sliding screen. As one moves to the upper floor, common passage between two bedrooms couples up as a study area. A free flowing partition between the master room and study helps to visually reduce the compactness of the space available. This fluidic yellow partition converges into the puja room, which in turn extends towards the mango tree outside. Clear glass walls in this area keep one connected

with the outdoors. As sun moves through the day, in this space we can see a noticeable change in the overall ambience. The play of light against bright primary colours is very dramatic. Here the traditional staircase railing is replaced by a unit which acts as a seating space to read a book and at the same time serves as a storage unit for study. The basic modules are again fluidic in form and combined together in an asymmetrical manner. Further in the master room, a raised wooden platform is encompassed by stone clad walls. The rustic sand stone cladding is a collage of plain and engraved slabs of varying sizes. A leaf pattern is subtly engraved, which on a more metaphysical level is symbolic representation of the nature outside. This element is further continued on the window shutter, which even when closed becomes a prominent feature. The side tables are designed with inbuilt light boxes made out of back lit onyx panels. The attached bathroom is a natural extension of the

part of the exterior and interior of the built space. The compound wall, exterior paving, indoor flooring, counters and elevation of the building is extensively clad by its 4-inches thick Sadarhalli grey granite especially hand-picked and transported from the Sadarhalli quarries of Karnataka. Solar energy is used for heating and lighting purposes. The entire courtyard is oriented north to utilise diffused lighting and shields the house from the oppressive solar glare from the east, south and west. Every possible tree was preserved in the site. Taking on the principle of Zen and the stone temple of Karnak in Egypt, each stone member of the elevation is of 15 feet high 4 inch thick granite monolithic blocks. This monolithic granite blocks are combined with natural wood fascia, steel and glass to form an elegant symphony of contemporary architectural design.

The exterior and interior design is a union of the human habitat and nature. The entire building - both interiors and exteriors - is built of Indian granite and marble and all furniture and furnishing is sourced entirely from India. The interior furnishings and furniture are contemporary in nature, almost ascetic in style. The design is both low maintenance, cost-effective and energy efficient. All the paintings in the living rooms and bedroom are the work of the building architect Ponni Concessao. The concept of the landscape design is simplicity, tranquillity and grace and this effect is emphasized by the usage of grey granite, pebbles, wild grass and elegant shrubbery. The stone sculpture is designed along Zen principles also integrates a waterfall. The combined effect is one of a peaceful forest in an urban jungle.

The coffee table has a high-low concept, made using teak wood in high gloss finish, adding a lot of character to this space. To accommodate more seating space, two rounded rest chairs in plum colour are placed accentuating colours of the room. The side tables are sleek with slim stainless steel legs perfect for placing table lamps. The accessories add character to this space; like the cushions in shades of plum and champagne along with

A 10 seater dining table is designed along with a buffet cabinet for storage and utility. Since there wasn't enough space for a separate dining room, it is placed adjacent to the living area where the guests do not get disturbed while the table is being laid. The dining table of dark brown teak wood with leatherite details in the legs along with chairs made using leatherite and velvet are exceptional. The finishing effect was given to this room by interesting wallpaper and lamps placed on the cabinet.

The luxury apartment by Amee Vora for a young couple at The Imperial Heights at Tardeo, Mumbai is iconic and bespoke since it was designed considering the feelings and emotions of each of its occupants. he client, young Khandwala couple, approached the designer, Amee Vora for a home which is very special. The apartment is located in the exclusive and luxurious Shah Poorji Pallonji's project - The Imperial Heights at Tardeo, Mumbai, which is an iconic bespoke residential property.Hence the bar was suddenly raised to a new height. The client wanted to have living-cum-dining space, master bedroom, media-cum-guest bedroom, daughters room with a play area, powder bathroom, kitchen (builder fitted), servants room (builder fitted), and terrace (builder fitted except outdoor furniture) in their house. All of them designed luxuriously with each space having its own identity. The design elements shortlisted from the presentation were not all belonging to a specific style. Besides benchmarking new standards, the designers had to follow certain mandates from the builder's office. It

was challenging to think of a special design within these contours of limitations. For the designer it was important to understand the client's emotions and feelings and how they want to live. She spent time with the couple and their 5-year old daughter to understand their expectations tied along with their feelings and emotions and created her frame of reference without the picture that came along with it. As a result, a design solution emerged which was largely 'contemporary' with objects of different styles which were combined to radiate integrity of spaces. The large wall to the right of the south facing main entrance received the teak wood paneling, geometric in design and inspired from the beehive with a herd of holy cows walking into the house pinned on the wood in the voids of the beehive so as to drive away the negative energy and bring in good omen to the family. always drawn towards krishna it became imperative for the Shreenathji swarup of Krishna to find his place on the same wall to bless the residents. A large traditional hand carved silver foiled mirror was placed on the wall across, along with the hand casted brass lotus stool from Viya Home for Krishna and his cows to admire themselves. With the various colours of the cows came in various colours of wood to form a marquetry forming a forest of trees for Radha and Krishna in the couples bed room as the headboard of the master bed. space. Tucked away in the wall-space was a folding queen size bed and wardrobe for the frequently visiting close family members. The living and dining space had to be designed to meet with the larger interests of the family including frequently visiting close family members. The client chose to exude luxury by choosing the Fendi couch and arm chairs and to get over its heaviness chose the Horm table with the carved lit legs. The designer had to tie these up and make sure they complement each other well. The design team spent a lot of time to make sure that the glamour of Fendi reflected itself into the large mirror and the cluster of Vibhor Sogani lights complemented the intricacy of the carved legs of the Horm table, anchored by a golden pyrite centre table. The entire space in turn was wrapped into a luxe in form of a wall paper to complete the picture.

arm colours, accentuating lighting and uncluttered arrangement of the accessories, all add to the fresh and minimalistic approach to the design of Zonasha Paradiso – a Villa project by Collage Architecture Studio at Bangalore. Each room or space is designed with a colour palette in mind, including carefully designed bespoke furniture. The overall feel of Paradiso is of effortless elegance and modern understated chic. The split levels of the villa posed unique challenges -how do we separate private spaces from the ones not so private? How does one relate spaces that are so different in function yet require interaction with each other? How do we add the most important dimension of the built space, the emotions evoked by each space, and still retain the integrity of each of the design elements? Each of these challenges was overcome by treating each space as a single entity, while it retains and preserves its unique character; it also amalgamates with the rest of the spaces and thereby creates a fluid transition from one to another.

The floor plan makes the most of generous ceiling heights and precisely locates each of the walls to benefit from the windows on the four perimeter walls. The resulting light filled living spaces provide an amenity commonly found in much larger houses. Carefully considered storage provides space for each family member’s essentials, yet limits consumption and places greater value on the objects that they have chosen to live with. The entrance foyer echoes a modern tropical style with the warm white tones of the seater interspersed with brightly colored flowers, throw cushions and handcarved accent mirrors. As one enter the house through the foyer, the interiors open up to a burst of sunlight. The earthy color palette with metal overtones complements the greenery that overflows from the courtyard into these spaces. Luxury is evident in every bespoke piece that enhances the living space, be it the coffee table, chairs or the sofa. Handpicked accessories accentuate the overall language of the room.

The kitchen, family living and dining areas form a seamless core which has been conceived together to preserve the integrity of the common spaces. Unlike conventional landscaping in the front and rear, the central court and linear strips of landscape elements in the interior embrace the idea of bringing in the outdoors. 086 Architecture Update February 2015

Breaking from the conundrum of the typical perception of interior design associated with Chinese restaurants, the designers Rohit Bhoite & Jannat Vasi have approached the design for ‘SilliChilli’ - a small take-away restaurant at Andheri, Mumbai with an urban twist. The designers along with the clients crafted a story, which depicts the journey of two mascots, 'Silli' and 'Chilli' from China to India, bringing the wok concept.

hile designing a small take-away restaurant ‘SilliChilli’ in the busy streets of Lohkandwala Complex at Andheri, Mumbai, the designers Rohit Bhoite & Jannat Vasi fused the functionality of space planning and practicality with the overall sense of aesthetics and brand visibility. The design projects this restaurants motto ‘Urban Street Take-Away’ in the form of wall graphics, Asian inspired furniture and interactive walls which promote human social networking.

W

The highlight feature of the space is the geometric water jet cut custom Matt Grey and Glossy White tile floor that create different responses via texture, colour and light refraction. This element adds innovativeness to the restaurant.

The clients are young entrepreneurs with clarity on having a youthful exuberance brought into the space, which reflects the brand's energy and Asian fast food cuisine. The designers along with the clients crafted a story, which depicts the journey of the mascots, 'Silli' and 'Chilli' from China to India, bringing the Wok Concept. Treating the space as a black canvas, the designers have artfully used dark and light materials to justify the balance of warmth and space.

The high and low seating single benches promote community dining. The signature usage of red as seen in Asian restaurants has been limited to the furniture accents. Asian inspired furniture and interactive chalk walls, which promote human social networking.

The designers fused functionality of space planning and practicality with the overall sense of aesthetics and brand visibility, which was adapted in the form of wall graphics. The walls are adorned with graphics showing the mascot's journey. The right blackboard wall acts as a base for the copper duct running across the restaurant.

The acoustic gypsum false ceiling is painted white to visually increase the sense of volume of the restaurant and merge non-attention driven mandatory services such as the AC, fans and light fixtures. The walls have hidden concealed storage units.

Applying skills of playful experimentation and in-depth research, the designers used white as a neutral palette and coloured the space visually with static art and a black chalkboard wall for customer interaction. Accents of copper and use of wood add warmth to the decor. The stools are conceptualized from chopsticks. In contrast, the colours and materials on the counters and flooring are trendy clean-cut patterns. The Copper AC Duct emphasizes 'Industrial Chic' to the urban settlement.

he design elements and details of Habanero - a Mexican restaurant in Bangalore, Karnataka designed by Mistry Architects, named after the hot chili pepper used in Mexican “comida de la calle” (street food), reflects Mexican architecture and portray a lifestyle of festivity, music, dance and spicy food.

The clients originally started a ‘Habanero’ restaurant in an IT hub which became a roaring success. This inspired them to initiate a ‘Habanero’ chain - this one being the first. Specialty food chains have a distinct identity. This had to be designed and created for Habanero. The restaurant is laid out in two levels with a double-height bar space at the entry connecting them. Soft-edged walls are hand-plastered with undulations on the surface and alcoves that house the bar display. Bright China mosaic with motifs derived from the logo clads the counter. The “obras de arte” (artworks), painted niches in the wall, emulate windows with sloped sun-shades of Mediterranean half-round clay tiles. These design depict Mexican streetscape, grille patterns, lights and

plaster bands - all put together to recreate the Mexican “calle” (street) and welcome the guests to an evening of fun and entertainment. A China mosaic display of the restaurant logo is set in the wall that forms the background for the staircase with a wrought iron railing. The first floor becomes a performance area and dance floor during events. An outdoor area with a view of the street below, accommodates large groups of people by means of fixed seating adorned with China-mosaic patterns. Wooden furniture arranged on hand made tiles with jagged edges adds warmth to the interior. Lighting is largely diffused with multi-coloured glass drop lights illuminating the tables. y

ogesh Lahoti of Akaaram Design Studio has designed the shop floor for ‘Adoré Home Concepts’ – a unique showroom for interior accessories and artefacts at Altoporvorim, Goa – in a very innovative way with Goanese heart. Situated on the National Highway 17, the central and engaging location was best suited for a commercial activity. It needed a Midas touch to convert it into the inviting space it has turned to. The floor plan was quite conventional with a rectangular space having a full length façade facing the highway and a mezzanine, extending the floor area to a surplus. Besides, there was an outdoor area on all three sides admeasuring almost equal to the indoor area that provided the perfect ingredient for the designer’s appetite for having breathing open spaces which was typical of Goan designs.

090 Architecture Update February 2015

Interior designing is all about identifying the spaces, making them alive with functional enhancements, juxtaposing them so as to compose a harmony in their coexistence to create a vivacious ambience and adding them value – both aesthetic as well as commercial – in the process with efficient and economical approach. This is exactly what Yogesh Lahoti of Akaaram Design Studio did while designing the interiors for ‘Adoré Home Concepts’ at Alto-Porvorim, Goa.

The long rectangular shop floor with appropriate positioning of all the furniture as well as decorative items

Design thinking started with the outdoor area as the surroundings give a dramatic effect to the inside and provides a decent outlook. The left side open passage was converted into a workshop for the logistical chores of the trading activity. Introduction of a cool and calm waterbody at the north-east corner not only graced the main entrance at north but also followed the principles of Vastu, a requirement the designer could not overlook. The location of the main counter was chosen tactfully so as to offer a welcoming gesture near the main entrance and to enjoy the view of the entire floor along with the stair leading to the mezzanine. The ventilation to the washroom near the main counter was taken care of by providing an exhaust and directing it outwards through the overhead concealed channels and to make this private place little lit with natural light, two narrow full-height panels with opaque glass were provided on the front wall which served as the indirect natural light sources for the washroom and display panels for artefacts for the outer showroom. All the movable elements inside the space had to serve a dual purpose – enhancing the look and feel of the space and posturing as marketable pieces of accessories. This made their positioning and placement very crucial to the composition as well as flow and circulation pattern. The creative effort started with appropriate positioning of all the furniture as well as decorative items. The open patio in the south-west corner served as a sit-out that can host small meetings with clients in the most natural and earthy surrounding. To create such an ambience, handshaped wooden chairs with a centre table was designed, which perfectly blended in with the external wall that was made with lumps of cement cladding and painted in terracotta external cement-paint shades.

clutter, it was chosen for displaying wall and roof light fittings and small table with chairs. A bridge was introduced that projected out of the façade line to form a small balcony facing the highway outside. This ‘just right’ balcony helped to break the monotony of elongated façade line and provide a peculiar space for the host to connect with the outer world in various ways like greeting the clients or governing the logistical movements or just for breathing fresh air at times. Materials for various finishes were selected meticulously by keeping in mind the aesthetics of the scheme selected, availability-workabilitydurability and above all workmanship required. On line of these priorities, Red Mitti – a local wood offering a well seasoned look of a Sagwan (Teak), was selected for the entire façade cladding. Internal wall covering was done with local Laterite stone that has an earthy look and with dry joint-lines, which looks more organic than crafted. A combination of Leather-finished Kaddappa and IPS (Cement finish) was used for Floor finish. Rough cut wooden planks and bamboos

engrossed the earthen look. The uncladded walls were finished with luster paint at few places and was covered with putty sealer, coated with wash and finished with sand paper brushing. The overall look, feel and function of this transformed space hosting a wide range of Interior accessories marked the beginning of the commercial development in the vicinity. fact file: project location client interior designer area commencement date completion date cost

sanctity of the space. The highway has an average traffic 42,000 passenger’s vehicle every day. The design challenge was to create maximum visibility of the structure from the main highway which would compel travelers to explore the unexplored. The octagonal design ensures better visibility for F & B brands in the food court. Manicured gardens, water bodies, exotic flora and fauna and landscaping add to the serenity and tranquility of the space. The well-known brand Haldiram’s is spread across 7,576-Sq ft.Inside the food court, graphic film of some famous movie poster has been pasted above to kiosk so that when people look upwards, they can relate this to their memories of watching movies. Semicircular elements have been added in such a way that it looks like film role of Bollywood movies. Ceiling lights are also designed with movie poster to lend continuity to the theme. The table tops of food court are pasted with movies posters of the same concept, some movie poster has been pasted on the walls and ceiling. Despite the challenges of adverse climatic conditions, dust storms, rains and tight time schedules, the mall has been crafted to perfection. Composite steel structure has been assimilated with elite interiors and attention has been paid to impeccable craftsmanship in interiors spanning the humungous scaled Atria.

Gamsei, a Cocktail Bar designed by the architects from Buero Wagner, at Munich, Germany, re-establishes the connection with local products, region and culture and is envisioned as an antidote to the globalization of similar projects.

g

amsei - a cocktailbar designed by the architects from Buero Wagner - was opened in 2013 at Glockenbach, Munich in Germany. The Client wanted to introduce hyper-localism to a field of practice which till had been mainly confined to the food scene. At Gamsei, ingredients for cocktails like Lavender Drunk Bee and Fr端hlingserwachen are either wildly foraged by Bax and his team or grown by local artesian farmers, thus reestablishing a connection with local products, region and culture, offering something that is unique in its kind. The bar interiors, designed by Fabian A. Wagner of Buero Wagner and Andreas Kreft, is a clear continuation of this philosophy - looking for new configurations whilst paying a tribute to the local Bavarian culture and craftsmanship using wood and lattice extensively. To make the concept more visible, they displayed all ingredients like dried flowers, herbs, self-made liqueurs and essences in a wooden built-in cupboard and in white ceramic bottles, hanging from the ceiling. The building ihosting the bar is from the 19th century, and the designers had the common problems with historic building fabric.

The ambience of a Bavarian beer hall has been applied to the 40-Sq m interior through amphitheater-style benches against opposing walls thus eliminating the common separation of bartender and guest. Here interaction is key and everybody has a first row seat. The tribune guests can enjoy a view of the two centrally placed bars and follow how Bax and his team mix, shake and stir up the cocktails. Also the bars have been stripped of all boundaries: workspace and bar are one. A wooden built-in cupboard that stretches the full length of the back wall. The coffee machine and even the doors to the washrooms are seamlessly integrated and can be flexibly displayed or disguised behind lattices. Tribunes, bars and cupboards are made of solid oak with a natural oil finish. In-between light bulbs make for a reduced lighting scheme by night. Just like Bax's cocktail ingredients, the architects procured all materials such as wood, steel and local ceramics, and worked in close collaboration with local carpenters and manufacturers to produce custom-made solutions. The Design and research process started in September 2012 in Munich - The interior was completed in April 2013. Since the opening of Gamsei, the bar has won prices at the Mixology Bar Awards 2014. fact file: project location designer

the children’s curiosity to discover and explore. The metaphor of the expansive network with many branches was developed from the familiar PET symbol, one of the first prominent symbols of an increased awareness in environmental protection. By translating the two dimensional graphic to a three-dimensional structure and altering it step by step, the result was a complex structure that makes the essentially abstract quality of the subject graspable on a spatial level. Together, MobiVersum and Level Green form a synthesis for all generations to explore knowledge in depth, to enjoy their own experiences, and to learn playfully.

erlin studio J. Mayer H. has created three-dimensional structures for children at the Volkswagen's Autostadt visitor centre, at Wolfsburg, Germany. Named MobiVersum, the installation was conceived as a "playful learning landscape" of solid wood sculptures that present challenges to different motor skills. Children of all ages can clamber over or climb inside each of the shape which in dialog with the exhibition Level Green shown on the floor above.

MobiVersum provides an active introduction to the subject of sustainability in all its facets for children of all ages: from the issue of mobility, joint learning and understanding, to courses in cooking. The team worked with Osnabrück University professor Renate Zimmer to curate the exhibition, making sure it provides children with a broad introduction to all facets of sustainability. Depending on their individual level of development, children can interact freely with the installation on various levels on their own or with their siblings or parents, engaging with the challenges presented by the sculpture for their motor skills.

In conversation with

Jürgen Mayer H

Q. What has been your way or key to success as a designer? A. I studied at Stuttgart University, The Cooper Union and Princeton University. Today we have projects and exhibitions all over the world. This international career is something that happened quite naturally to me. When you start going abroad for your studies, doing internships in different countries and working in different culture, you tend to embrace an attitude of looking at architecture as a general means of expressing our everyday culture and necessities. So if you look at architecture in general spatial terms, the location wouldn’t make a big difference. It is, however, not necessarily a business strategy for our firm. I don’t really care where the projects are, but it is important to have clients that share our curiosity and excitement of architecture and design. Q. Which difficulties have you had to overcome on your way? A. Our development was very dynamic towards a wide range of scales and disciplines in collaboration with other specialists and partners. The

100 Architecture Update February 2015

fascinating challenge was and is to manage the constant transformation and growth. Q. What is your biggest dream today? A. This might sound obvious, but I am really interested in working on different scales, from the urban context on a skyline level to very specific relationship on the ground. Every part refers to a different context, even according to height. To explore different countries by cross-cultural projects is such an energizing way to communicate in our world today. And building in India has always been a very fascinating idea for me. J. MAYER H. & Partner, Architekten focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space. J. MAYER H. was founded in 1996 by Jürgen Mayer H. in Berlin. In January 2014, Andre Santer and Hans Schneider joined as partners in the firm. Jürgen Mayer H. studied at Stuttgart University, The Cooper Union and Princeton University. His work has been published and exhibited worldwide and is part of numerous collections including MoMA New York and SF MoMA and also private collections. He has won national and international awards including the Miesvan-der-Rohe-Award-Emerging-Architect-Special-Mention-2003,Winner Holcim Award Bronze 2005 and Winner Audi Urban Future Award 2010. Mayer has taught at Princeton University, University of the Arts Berlin, Harvard University, Kunsthochschule Berlin, the Architectural Association in London, the Columbia University, New York and at the University Of Toronto, Canada.

Q. What is your signature style and how would you describe it? A. We focus on working at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. One major investment in our work is looking at expanding the material of architecture, beyond say just building material. The influence of new media and new materials now expands our understanding of “space” as a platform for communication and socio-cultural interactivity. We look for seamless materials that help to strengthen our design. As our projects are always very sculptural, it’s helpful to use material that supports the impression of the curved forms. As we always do individual designs for specific functions, sites and clients, we don't start with a special formal attention in mind. Ideally our projects create a specific identity for the place and work like activators and catalysts to generate appropriation by the people in and around the buildings.

Furniture Designs DOSHI LEVIEN

New Dimensions in Furniture Design As styles change, so does the house decor. That’s why it’s so easy to spot furniture pieces from different decades. Innovative solutions in edging, surfaces and more have created a whole new dimension of possibilities for furniture manufacturers and designers alike. Here are a few trends that are coming up in the near future those furniture designers and manufacturers need to be aware of: Just like in many other retail areas, going green is very important to many consumers now. Furniture that is made from reusable material, or simply refurbished vintage pieces are all the rage right now. Space crunch in urban world compel people to buy Multi-functional furniture. They should serve double or even triple-duty, especially for consumers who live in small urban homes and apartments. Consumer wants the furniture to be functional and more gadget-friendly. Integrating technology can be as simple as having a cord organizer on a dresser or a USB port in a desk. Consumers always look for ‘never-beforepossible forms and shapes’. It is not just the physical shape of furniture that is turning heads either; it is the materials used to make them. One of the key things making furniture design so exciting right now is the way in which materials which are not always thought of as sitting comfortably alongside one another are being combined. So, don't be surprised to see natural materials paired with man-made composites, and look out for designs which offer just glimpses and peeks of colour from within an otherwise minimalist cloak.

Design Trends 2015 new year means a fresh start, and what better way to kick off 2015 than by updating the look of your home or work space. This year’s interior design trends are all about creating dramatic impact from simplicity, because favoured looks are simultaneously bolder and more accessible than ever before. If last year was all about turning your space into an organized one by colour and shapes, this year the focus should be on carefully curating it with bright colours, bold designs and actual art. The décor is about bringing a new sense of life to your space, especially during different seasons or upon different occasions or even on different moods. The most interesting homes or office spaces by far are the ones that tell the story of the life being lived by the owners or occupants, so this year consider prioritizing personal over perfect. The move to more open environments, less clutter

and unnecessary furniture, traditional influence, all with an emphasis on texture and colours awakening your tactile senses is anticipated. Going green with use of eco-friendly materials will continue in 2015. As much as we admire the beauty of the past and aspire to live with it, we also love to try to peer around corners to catch a glimpse of what’s coming next; you hear about this from the experts. We interacted with few stalwarts in this field including Rajiv Mohan (Managing Director, Cherry Hill Interiors), Sanjay Agarwal (Co-Founder, FRDC), Santha Gour Mattoo (Principal Architect, Planet 3 Studios) and Sourabh Gupta (Founder & Principal Architect, Archohm)and they have identified several key themes for trendy interiors. LIGHTING & LUMINARIES Lighting solutions are changing the definition of illumination. According to Sanjay Agarwal, FRDC, lighting is becoming smarter and energy efficient. LED’s have transformed the way of lighting over the years. People demand for less ambient lights and more accent lights, he says. There is rapid increase in break-through energy efficient lighting solutions, which are addressing the challenges of energy-conservation in power strapped India. Different lighting for different moods is how lighting should be in residential sector, says Mattoo of Planet 3 Studios. Direct lighting should be avoided as far as possible also need for more ambient lighting is increasing, she adds. Controlled lighting is the way to go. She further emphasizes that the higher wattage lighting should be used only in task-based areas. The concept of indoor and outdoor lighting is changing drastically with ergonomics, economy and cleaner technologies. Consumers as well as architects and designers are demanding for cleaner and greener energy sources. Mohan of Cherry Hill explains that the selection of lighting in residential segment goes with the choice and imagination of interior designers. “LED’s are the inthing now a day”. Mirror optics, down lighters and angle lights are used primarily in almost all segments. He further adds that maintenance is the most important factor for achieving the correct choice for indooroutdoor lighting for commercial sector. Lighting pollution is a major concern too. Gupta of Archohm urges to avoid lighting pollution; he recommends focused task lighting.

and colours flooring may vary. Mattoo states that in home/hospitality/office the choice of these entities entirely depends on end users needs, location, context and budget, while for corporate the main parameter for selection is maintenance and acoustics. Traditional ceiling design ideas were centred on simplicity (flat, white ceilings) but modern trends are proving that the possibilities are endless. Plain white ceilings are rapidly becoming a thing of the past as interior designers and architects are embracing unique design ideas. There is lot of experiments with wood, corrugated metals, plaster -boars and tiles for ceiling. Agarwal says that ceiling is moving more towards system type as services are becoming critical. System ceiling of wood is added for warmth in spaces where technology is playing wonders, he adds.

WALL DÉCOR Four walls of a house can tell a lot about an individual. It becomes a canvas for expression, memories and warmth. From colour to texture, building material to artefact everything is taken into consideration, wallpaper use is on the upswing. Mattoo explains why the wallpapers are in vogue. Wallpapers are a huge favourite for the new generation since its application is quick and non messy, also due to wide availability of choices. Agreeing with Mattoo, Agarwal adds that the variety, choice of materials and shades are much more in wallpapers, hence it is preferred. He also points out that wallpapers of natural materials are preferred. Wall finishes made of natural timber and stones are being used as accents in spaces.

FLOORING & CEILINGS While renovating or designing a space, new flooring, wall and ceiling texture, colour and design can diagrammatically alter the look. Gupta of Archohm says that his team uses timeless materials like raw wood, stone, concrete with different treatments and combinations. He further states that transparency in materials is the new trend as interiors spaces have become partition-less with lighter and cleaner lines. This works well for flexible, versatile layouts that are seen as design features in today’s time. As the residential, office and hospitality spaces are being redefined according to the choice of consumer, the flooring materials are also altering. Mohan explains, in residential and hospitality, kind of flooring used is of natural stone (Italian/India marble/granite) and wooden parquet and in corporate, marble/granite, wood, vinyl flooring and carpet tiles made of nylon yarn are mostly used. Flooring of textured wood, concrete, mosaic tiles mixed with creativity is creating rainbow of colours in our abode whether it be home, work or leisure. According to Agarwal of FRDC, flooring is becoming more natural, with distress concrete, distress wood and coloured concrete coming as an eclectic design options. Wood as a natural and engineered product is being preferred in hospitality along with natural stones, says Agarwal. Based on the sector, choice of material, texture

The wall décor of a residence or hospitality differs from that of a corporate. Often company’s corporate identity is translated in its interior space, and it should be aesthetically pleasing too. Wall panels in glass are creating fresh style statement in office interiors. A combination of different colours, both in light and dark shades is used to enhance the aesthetic ambience of the office interiors. According to Mohan, PVC wall coverings, acrylic solid surfaces and lacquered glass panelling in various colours/finishes are apt for office walls. Gupta of Archohm points out that in residence and hospitality, a play of materials is seen on the walls. “Wall art, installations and digital walls make it appear larger than life by adding quirky functions to it with upcoming technologies and material mix”. Further he adds that grey, white and black as base colours with splash of corporate colours forms the palette of todays corporate interiors. Mohan says, in residential and corporate, wallpapers and textured paint finishes are used but in different price range, in residential wall finishes are finalized as per the taste/choice and selection of the client, suggested by designer/architect.

FURNITURE Furniture has become a personality and style statement. Indoor to outdoor, the definition of furniture has changed drastically. It is

available in contemporary to modern chic styles. Furniture is available in glass, wood, wicker, leather, brass, and the choice is unlimited. Agarwal explains that furniture from modern classic is preferred by designers to bring in ‘modern’ look. Another trend is to use classic contemporary furniture from Europe/America to create an eclectic statement. Gupta states that in furniture very smooth with rough textures are used as contrast. According to Mohan from Cherry Hill Interiors, in all sectors, furniture with more durable finishes in contemporary styles is preferred. He further elaborates that in residential projects, traditional and contemporary designs are in trend as per client choice and interest. For traditional look customized natural wood furniture of traditional designs with polish and carving is preferred for residential interiors while for contemporary it is a combination of MDF, mica/veneers and water based PU finishes, says Mohan. Furniture and furnishing industry depends a lot on fashion couture of the season. According to Agarwal, furnishings made from natural fibres and with bold colours are finding places in design.

DOORS & WINDOWS DRESSING Whether its suburban house, high-end bungalow or commercial spaces, the trends in windows and doors are transforming to maximize light, aesthetic and space. Regarding the material choice for doors and windows Mohan of Cherry Hill states that in residential sector wooden doors and windows made of teak wood are mostly used. Aluminium or UPVC doors & windows are preferred in corporate offices. Looking at window dressing Agarwal mentions that blinds are replacing curtains. Blinds of wood, bamboo and natural fibre are creating space statement and as they control lighting better, and space does look smarter with blinds. Mohan of Cherry Hill Interiors mentions that hardwood blinds, Roman blinds and etching films in various patterns and colours are in fashion for window dressing. Framing the windows in style and elegance is more than just enriching our homes; it gives us the freedom to be creative. One should consider various options, keeping convenience and precision in mind. Motorized blinds and shades offer the ultimate in simplicity, safety and style, and can be operated from any room and at any time with remote, wall switch or programmable timer. According to Mattoo of Planet 3 Studios automated window dressing is creating its own market and is being embraced rapidly.

KITCHEN Most of us spend considerable amount of time in kitchen, which makes it undoubtedly the heart of the house. It’s not just the place to cook food, it’s also used for entertaining guests, storing gadgets and eating family meals, which is why kitchen re-modellings are becoming more and more popular. The concept of traditional kitchen has completely changed. Today kitchen is all about convenience meeting functionality.

According to Mohan of Cherry Hill Interiors, interior designers are experimenting with modular kitchens. Agarwal, FRDC says kitchens have two directions, one contemporary classic and other ultra modern sleek. According to Mattoo, use of wood and metal in finishing in kitchen furniture is the new trend. Various chimney concepts are the fad as advance versions of chimneys are being launched explains Mohan. Different combinations of mica are being used to provide a different theme and colour to the kitchen. He also mentions that SS tiles are also used in some places and acrylic solid surfaces counters are favoured instead of marbles/granite. The current trend in kitchen also shows use of custom-made cabinets and Corian counter-tops with stainless steel as king in kitchen appliances.

BATH FITTINGS & ACCESSORIES Green building codes are revamping the bathroom space. Bathrooms are no longer just a utilitarian space, it has become a place of luxury and convenience. With water scarcity as major issue, many innovative designs are available for water conservation. According to Agarwal, bathrooms are becoming technology oriented and gadget savvy and with the introduction of built in sensors, clients are demanding smart fixtures and faucets in the bathrooms. Baths and fittings are revolutionizing drastically with consumers demanding for products with less maintenance. Mattoo from Planet 3 Studios emphasizes on bathrooms which are easy to maintain, clean and with non-fussy look. Bath is decorated with same care and creativity as rest of the house. Custom vanities provide plenty storage and enhance the illusion of spaciousness, briefs Mohan. He also adds that in smaller bathrooms, floor tile adds style without overwhelming the space, where as in a large bathroom, its effect is ‘elegant’ to ‘magnificent’. According to Mohan, geometric tiles add depth and visual interest to a plain neutral space. Natural beauty of the bath space can be enhanced by introducing earthy materials like natural stone or wood-look tiles. By introducing plant life one can promote good health. Interior décor, design, material, all add that special factor which completes the building from inside and outside. Designers are using abundant colours and textures while keeping eco-friendly theme as the centre of creativity. This issue of the magazine is on ‘Design Trends’ in residential, retail, commercial and hospitality designs. Here we will be discussing new patterns emerging in residential, hospitality and work space, adding aesthetic attribute to building along with its functionality.

the project as a symbol . The trend though new will be fast catching up pace in showcasing a glamorous look for the commercial building and the offices.

Informed by a green sensibility and a renewed commitment to versatile utility, the following design trends will be building momentum, and will reshape the beautification of the city and the environment in long run.

impact of congestion, through intelligent structural engineering and environmentally friendly design. The office should be designed keeping in mind the penetration of maximize sunlight.Access to Nature, Views and Daylight and the presence of daylight and windows, as well as opportunities for active and passive contact with nature, sensory change and variability, positively impact well-being. Daylight helps people regulate daily rhythms, and reduces stress.

Indoor plants at corporate houses can greatly enhance the natural ambience. Plants not only look nice, but they also release oxygen into the air, and some of them can actually filter some pollutants out of the air (spider plants are said to do this). Maintaining an indoor/outdoor feeling with large glass areas looking out onto a patio can do wonders to an otherwise confining space.

Modern Contemporary architecture also encompasses incorporating open, terrains with scattered trees and shrubs near a body of water, which acts as a stress buster and definitely affects a worker’s ability to stay alert. Large expanses of neutral-colored workstations, all with the same height and texture, typically do not support human productivity.

Prefabrication is making a strong comeback in both commercial and residential properties, as the benefits of greener and faster production techniques become more attractive to firms looking to cut building and operating costs. With modular construction, units can be stacked and arranged into aesthetically pleasing, functional designs that convey an ecoconscious mentality. Clean lines, aluminiumpanelling and energy-efficient glass give modular buildings a modern chic that will soon populate downtown corridors the world over.

Among the natural materials that is aesthetically pleasing glass is definitely preferred by corporate houses as besides getting in natural daylight, it can make an office space look larger and also open up extra floor space. Being recyclable in nature, durable, noise control, resistance to any kind of decay, low maintenance, acoustical comforts (with double glazed glass facades), will definitely be significant in balancing the environment and making it biodegradable.

demand for energy, has meant that Ecology and the Environment is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful influences on the design process. This is leading to an emerging trend based on a response to these criteria.

Thermal Comfort is created through the right combination of temperature, airflow and humidity. A combination of these elements is required for physical comfort at the workplace. Incorporating thermal comfort in office area definitely bequeaths the workplace with better airflow. One new trend in modern contemporary architecture is to significantly reduce the

Archi Materials lead to sustainable development. Despite globalization which homogenizes everything in its path, the intrinsic connection with materials still prevails in architecture. Exotic plastics, timber, hybrid fibres and concrete dictate and give a unique approach to architecture. Modern contemporary architecture ensures that cutting-edge designers and engineers are putting nature into practice with sustainable architecture

principles to ensure that the work environment is not stimulating as the employees lose focus and creative drive. An environment devoid of sensory stimulation and variability can lead to boredom and passivity. Indoor Outdoor Theory Whether it’s through commercial interior breakout spaces or central courtyard areas in domestic architecture, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors are becoming less clear. This can be achieved by opening the façade of a building up to the environment, merging an indoor space seamlessly with an outdoor area, or by incorporating vibrant colours and natural textures into an interior space to give the sense of being outdoors. The technique which was explored by Japanese architects will bring in more contemporary style to offices and workplaces where better working environments are needed. Lighting techniques to illuminate the facade of the building: All of us agree that when we evaluate a building for its overall appeal, the exterior facade takes the first place. The exterior aesthetics has gained more importance than the interior functionality. The building has to be made look good. The new trend adapted is converting flat glass to shapes that allows ‘free form’ surfaces with geometric complexity and the possibility” of integrating other elements like, LED’s, into conventional flat glass which gives a long lasting impression in minds of people and thereby creates

Ornamentation will be the next big trend to give the commercial offices a pristine new look is ornamentation. All the changes and want for external beauty of the structure has made architecture commercial graphic art of decoration. The designing system has undergone a diverse change and creates the total design along with functional and aesthetic aspects of the interior as well as the exterior of the commercial buildings. Landscape Architecture will be an integral part of commercial designs in 2015. There has been a tremendous change in lifestyle and facilities and amenities that define our life today. A need to explore how nature can reach no bounds of imagination or in reality has made landscape architecture today an integral part of one’s lifestyle at home or at work. With these changes landscape architecture has also started developing a new language. Techniques today allow plants to grow without their natural ground or soil. Green walls, Bio walls, hydroponics, green roofs, podium gardens, land bridges are the new terms in the landscape dictionary that show the transition from hills rivers and the horizon to sky being the limit in the Urban landscape. This language reflects in the new corporate landscape architecture of our country too today. The up-coming designs that are shaping the corporate houses will truly add a completely new meaning in giving a modern exterior look with chic interiors also ensuring complete ecological balance. The sector is experiencing a reboot of sorts, the industry more than ever needs an influx of inspired, innovative architectural designs that will work to give our cities and communities physical shape to our evolving goals of environmental care, energy conservation, and improved resource management. With these and other emerging trends leading the way, the next few years in the building sector will be greener and more imaginative than ever.

them how clients pick colours, debated with them why a particular choice; The researchers probed them and sought their take on what the ‘future of workspaces’ would be like and came out with a forecast. Researchers from Godrej Interio married the influence that Megatrends such as fast paced changes

in technology and sustainability were having on India and its colour preferences. They incorporated regional colour preferences which are very distinct in various geographies of India such as colours of east and north east, colours of north, west and south to truly capture the aspirations of rising India which is increasingly getting reflected on ‘Interiors of Work Spaces’. Indian work spaces today are striving to achieve a balance between these global influences of megatrends and the very Indian tastes and unique colour preferences. Today’s generation have seen the world and wants to bring it to their office spaces and yet needs to make space for the other half that is deeply rooted to Indian values. Study of over 650 offices, the way colours are used, indicate that the danger of “COLOUR ACCIDENTS” is real as workplaces strive to achieve this

balance. The researchers also noticed during the study that in an era of global supply chains where different materials are sourced from different geographies of the world, it is a constant challenge to marry colours seamlessly so that elements of office Interiors speak in a “COLOUR UNISON”. The company, therefore, has used colour experts to develop a Colour Wheel (image in the right) and colour coordinated colour schemes, the application of which will ensure a colour coordinated office. Recommended colour palettes, which are broken into four major categories as below, will achieve harmony for the space and avoid ‘COLOUR ACCIDENTS”. GAIA: The earth - as one living organism. One bio body, one planet, one destiny. The building body will act much in the same way like the bio body, responding to smart intelligence built into the sensory receptors of the architecture. FOUNDRY: Form. Function. Foundry is a reflection of the classical world of work. It is a yearning for quality and simplicity. The concept strongly conveys the message that here is an emerging modern country rooted deeply and comfortably in its own enduring traditions and physical surroundings. CENTER STAGE: Impressive staging is designed to give expression to power and lend it an imposing frame. The concept of Center Stage stands for persuasiveness, strength and confidence; qualities that have a determination to shape the future. 123-D: Efficient manufacturing, processing and assembly lead to production solutions that are low impact; in energy consumption, materials or processes, transportation and assembly. Welcome to a world of 123-D! India Interiors Colour Forecast is futuristic. It is a result of Godrej Interio’s association with Freedom Tree Design’s vast experience in colour consulting along with methodical study

corporate ideology is the new trend in work place. For a designer, always the space is limited while the design is infinite. Office culture is important part of design. The designer’s role is to make use of the contrast among the medias namely materials, spaces and time. Interplay of spaces with the change of people’s position. Natural lighting being closer to nature is the greatest task of the designer to make the space vibrant with energy, thus results in the output of the end user. As we are moving towards changing trends, lot of awareness has been created by the media which had helped the designers to think and evolve solutions for work place strategy in today’s context which would help the in understanding the changing value. All the materials being used in the products are recyclable or eco-friendly for the entire project, which would help the health of the occupants in the work place. Carpets, paints which are low VOC have become the integral part of the projects. Kitchen Design

‘Less is More’ is Making a Comeback Manish Jain, Director, Bleu Concepts odular Kitchen industry is an evolving trade in India. A lot of concepts are adopted from Italy and they are being ‘Indianised’ as well. Our cultures are obviously very different, our climatic conditions are very different, which is why the industry has had to adapt tremendously to this need. One of the most important reasons behind the evolution of this concept of modular kitchen designs is to get a clutter-free and well organized kitchen area; no matter if one has a small home or a spacious one.

M This year, in many ways, “Less is more” is making a comeback in styling kitchens. Open plan kitchens, including a bar unit, or a buffet counter are the new things in the kitchen. There is strong texture and warmth which serves to hold the aesthetics back from an uber sleek look. Cabinets and drawers are being customized for more storage, and built-in options for specific contents and usage is on the rise.

The biggest change is seen over the last few years is how customers want to build the kitchen as a part of the living space or as part of the entrance space in the house. Open plan kitchens, including a bar unit, or a buffet counter are the new things in the kitchen. People want the open islands in the kitchen to look more like furniture pieces, and not like a workstation. This allows to bring in their own personal warmth and welcoming touch to this space. Islands are getting bigger, grander with a lot more work being planned on them than before. The trend is more towards built in appliances, built in hoods and refrigerators to get the clean and chic look. This year, in many ways, “Less is more” is making a comeback. There is strong texture and warmth which serves to hold the aesthetics back from an uber sleek look In addition to this, people are going in for colourful backsplashes, vivid and playful. These are getting bigger and wider as well. A lot of textures are being used in the kitchens, flooring, backsplash, hardware, lighting etc.

118 Architecture Update February 2015

Another change that is still waiting on the threshold to happen is the induction of technology into the kitchen. In Europe, several Italian kitchen appliance giants have recently designed intuitive controls into their ovens, sometimes with retro dials, a mixed aesthetic message that works. Several appliance brands offer smart phone appliance operation (some via SMS) with a single app controlling multiple appliances (of the same brand.) Talking about colors, as said earlier, ‘Less is more’, kitchen cabinets and shutters are becoming lighter with beige, light brown, whites, off whites, cool greys, warm greys-all are still trending and wood stains (for cabinetry) run the gamut from lighter than middle toned finishes to dark. An exciting new introduction in the neutral appliance segment is Miele’s color, Truffle, a cool glass surface paired with stainless steel trims. It’s a non-color color that is ideal for a chic warm-cool palette in the kitchen and goes with many wood stains and painted colors Engineered Stone (Caeserstone by Hafele, Quartz, Laminam) are

increasingly being used for kitchen tops. Gooseneck faucets, fancy island chairs, extra-long tables, open fancy shelving, etc are the trends too. Stainless steel fixtures are a thing of the past, people are looking at brass fittings. Brushed nickel or chrome or oil-rubbed bronze is shaping up to be an important surface for kitchen and bathroom fixtures such as faucets, handles and knobs. Cabinets and drawers are being customized for more storage, and builtin options for specific contents and usage is on the rise. Drawer/Cabinet separators, organizers are the new trend as people want to maximise storage space in kitchens. In terms of hardware for kitchens, ensomatic shutters are in favour, which open and close with a touch. Let’s not forget that kitchens are becoming more and more social with time, and there is obviously a certain level of brag factor associated with it. In saying that, people are spending a lot of time designing their furniture, especially kitchen islands, shutter finishes, etc. They are also getting into the nitty-gritty’s of what is inside the cabinet, how to maximise corner space, wall space, which wall accessory to buy etc.

every place in our lives. In the year 2015 there will be a move towards versatility.

COLOURS, THEMES AND PRINTS Add Glamour with Metallic A little goes a long way with metallic

which feels subtle and elegant. Gold is big in fashion for tabletop and home design lately. Many simpler fabrics (like cotton and linens) with a little bit of shimmer and a slightly metallic finish are in trend. The juxtaposition of jute and natural materials with metallic colours creates the bling we crave in our homes today. Beige, Be Gone Beige is one of those colour palettes which has been a favourite for years. It is a safe colour, it is timeless and it works well as a base color for exciting splashes of color accents. It is one of those which will stay around in some form of strength but it has lost its luster. This year a continuation of the unwinding of a strong but sterile trend will be seen. Floral Influence Floral designs and chintz textiles are a growing trends, not only in the interior design world, but also in other markets such as fashion. When there is a lap over of a particular trend in more than one vertical market, in this case floral, the trend has a tendency to have staying power. Myriad of Blues Blue is without a doubt a massive trend this year. Different shades of blue rolling back into each other in the same room will ignite the senses like azure, beryl, teal, cobalt, sapphire; a cerulean of blue, folding back into themselves in an ocean of electric design. Apart from turquoise the other shade of blue which has gained popular traction is navy. A calming, shade which commands authority without appearing desperate, it is easy and pleasant on the eye, this is one which can’t go wrong with in 2015: Navy is a vogue that can be used in accessories, soft furnishings, couches,

cushions, cupboards and walls. Ethnic Prints Ethnic fabrics, upholstery and prints look like they will be a popular trend this year. Adding a fresh pizzazz to your home from far off exotic lands can break up boring bland interiors and if authentic, can be fantastic conversational pieces. Parisian Soft Black & White The softer tones are easier on the eye, they’re comfy and relaxing, yet they don’t take the edge off the swank. This is a trend which has been evolving over the past couple of years and evidence from the design hemisphere shows a

continuation in strength over 2015 - an almost timeless trend that will look good for a long time to come. Whispery Haze The Pantone colours for 2015 will include a lot of soft neutrals, think pale pink and flesh coloured tones. A romantic hazy filter will be applied to fabrics and accessories. Frosted florals, tinted and milky glass and gauzy ethereal fabrics will breeze in. Piquant Pineapples This is one of those very specific trend predictions that is far from vague and generalized. exhibitions, it is a trend which is not restricted in its scope. Turquoise Turquoise screams of life and personality and there is a splash of this colour everywhere. The difference in feeling this vibrant tone is that it gives a room a stark contrast to a mellow navy. If done rightly it usually looks eye catchy with the razzle-dazzle edge. It is a trend with strong foundation to leap up and press forwards with great vigor and potency in 2015.

Texture, Colour & Pattern

Make Way for Artistic Vibrant Tones Ramachandra Shastry, Director, RUMORS Fine Furnishings ome decor never stands silent. As we have seen 2014 was all about neon colours but in 2015 its time for something new. This season, patrons are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium. When it comes to themes, then saturated colours and rich colourful accents will be one of the latest trends in home decorating that can be used in any season. Bright room colours and accent colour shades enliven modern interior design and can be used for emphasizing unique home decorating ideas. The trend will be emphasized by the pairing of soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colourful equilibrium. While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colours allows for experimentation with new looks and colour combinations.

H Mustard yellow and mauve, all light and deep purple colours, rich blue and pink colour shades are modern colour design trends in 2015. Floral designs in textiles are a growing trend. Natural elements such as warm woods, soft comfortable fabrics, textured tiles that bring dimension and smooth sleek surfaces, will be the main focus for 2015’s home decor.

The difference in feeling the vibrant tone gives a room such stark contrast to a mellow navy. When there is an overlap of a particular trend in more than one vertical market, in this case floral, the trend percolates to other verticals as well. This will be a strong trend in 2015 that would be seen popping up everywhere, from billboards, shop windows, interior designs and commercials. Floral textiles are a great

option for any new designs. Home interiors need to feel good as well as look good. We want to be as pleased as much in the touch and texture as the colour and pattern.

COLOURS AND THEMES This year will be seeing a diversity of colours like we haven’t seen in ages. Attention has settled for gentle colours like snow-white and gray colour tones which can be combined with turquoise blue colour accents that bring stylish Mediterranean charm into modern interior design. Warm shades of brown colours, in combination with colder tones like granite gray colour tones and hints of leafy green colours create beautiful, natural decorating colour schemes for modern interior design. Mustard yellow and mauve, all light and deep purple colours, rich blue and pink colour shades are modern colour design trends 2015. Try pairing Jewel tones of azure and coral paired with pale gold and silver or rich grape with stone to create new spaces or bright shades with grey, taupe and sand to get the perfect accent colour in the space. It has been staple in interior design over the years, but now we are seeing a shift to softer tones of black and white, taking that harsh edge off of the contrast.

FABRICS AND PATTERN Prints and pattern are definitely back on the rise – visual impact is the key theme; ethnic fabrics, upholstery and prints look like they will be a popular trend in 2015. Large-scale florals, bold digital prints, metallic and eco-friendly fabrics will be in vogue. Patterns on muted grounds will still stay an evergreen option. Have fun with mixing and matching patterns to create a more personalised home style and to stimulate the senses. Floral patterns that seem forgotten, may present a unique feel at home if they are incorporated in a proper manner. A white background is often recommended for stylish purposes. Floral designs in textiles are a growing trend, not only in the interior design world, but also in other markets such as fashion. Have more fun in 2015 with the palette by throwing together stripes, solids, hand sketches and geometrics in an array of colours and textures. Natural elements such as warm woods, soft comfortable fabrics, textured tiles that bring dimension and smooth sleek surfaces, will be the main focus for 2015’s home decor. Other patterns that will be loud during the approaching year are geometrical shapes, stripes, abstract patterns and hand sketches, which could be used on a range of hues and textures.

Supreme Introduces ‘INSUflex’, a High Vapour Resistant Insulator for AirConditioning Applications he Supreme Industries Ltd., founded in 1942, pioneered many pathbreaking products in the country and became trendsetters in plastics industry by introducing many advanced solutions for various applications and industries. Supreme’s Insulation Division offers solutions in the areas of: I Ducting insulation I Underdeck insulation I Pipe insulation I Floor insulation I Insulation joint sealing tapes I Sound insulation I Overdeck insulation I Wall insulation

T

Atul Khanna, General Manager, Supreme Industries Limited

The main goal of a good insulation material should be that of preventing water vapour from spreading through insulation as water is an optimal heat conductor. INSUflex, by Supreme Industries, is a CFCfree, black flexible elastomeric closed-cell Nitrile Rubber thermal insulation that provides a highly efficient method of insulation and effectively controls condensation against both heat loss and heat gain. The material is particularly suitable for insulating pipe works for condensation control. It can be used on chilled water pipe lines, refrigerated pipeworks, hot & cold water services and on sheets or rolls in air-conditioning ductworks. INSUflex, has a very high diffusion resistance factor to water vapour transmission=7000, a low thermal conductivity and an excellent fire safe performance. It is suitable for a temperature ranging from –55oC to +105oC. The product does not depend on any additional outer thick skin or covering but is in built with the insulation and extends through the full thickness. INSUflex range is resistant to corrosion, fungal and mildew growth and is therefore suitable for clean room applications.

132 Architecture Update February 2015

Insulation material with a low ‘K’ value equates to a high energy saving potential and thermal performance. Thermal conductivity is the main data used to technically calculate insulation thickness required to prevent condensation. ‘INSUflex’ advantage Good flexibility at low temperature I Clean, dust-free, fast and easy installation I Low thermal conductivity I High water vapor resistance factor =7000 I Protects pipes against corrosion by environment elements I Low toxicity index offers minimal toxic fire hazard for safety assurance and rescue operations I Good fire performance, for buildings with high occupancy, Class 1 product I Unique closed-cell structure, provides an ideal vapor barrier resistance I

INSUflex is available in combinations of various wall thicknesses and diameters to suit G.I., copper and PVC pipes. The product is applied to the surface using an adhesive compound. A protective layer of glass cloth, in two layers with an adhesive compound is then applied before providing a weather barrier, such as aluminium / G.I. cladding for outdoor application. Other ‘INSU’ Range products: ‘INSUshield’ is a non-fibrous, fire retardant (‘Class O’ in Fire Propagation and ‘Class 1’ in Surface Spread of Flame), closed cell,

tri dimensional chemically crosslinked polyethylene XLPE foam. An ideal environment friendly insulation material, with a perfect solution for all your insulation needs for ducts, roofs, pipes, vessels, etc. The divergent advantages of ‘INSUshield’ are ease of installation, low thermal conductivity and good moisture & vapour resistance preventing microbial growth and optimum condensation protection. ‘INSUreflector’ is a radiant heat reflective insulation material made of polyethylene air bubble film (ABF) laminated with aluminum foil on one or both sides. It is a low ereflective insulation material with a low mass to air ratio, which effectively blocks the radiant heat transfer. The bright surface of the aluminium foil, which encases the FR polyethylene air bubble material, reflects 96 per cent to 99 per cent infrared radiation received by the surface of the heated slated roof. Amongst others, there are 4 primary reasons why Supreme’s Thermal Insulation Division is a choice of discerning customers seeking superior insulation solutions: Quality: A methodical, systematic and stringent approach to quality ensures all our products are not only world-class but also durable. We adhere to international quality standards while manufacturing our products. ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 certifications and NABL Accreditation for our various plants is a testimony to our serious approach to quality.
