The half way point in 2018 has come and gone and the Keiro Northwest board of directors has been busier than ever. Over the last 6 months, our skilled nursing facility that we began over 40 years ago was faced with meeting the latest requirements of insurance companies regarding types and amounts of reimbursements. Our Keiro staff worked diligently to respond to all data requests and their efforts continue to result in perrenial recognition by the State of Washington. Now, during the next few months of 2018, our board of directors will be working to create long-term sustainability of the board and welcome new Board members to replace those who have completed their terms. Change is the one thing that seems to remain constant in any organization and we wanted to take a moment to thank those who have served in a board capacity for their thoughtful leadership in making Keiro Northwest an organization that represents the best in healthcare for the Asian community. I would be remiss if I didn’t say to you - the staff and community - thank you all for the support that you have given Keiro Northwest, especially during this exciting time of building for another 40 years. The board of directors continues to be grateful for the broad base of support and investment from people like you who represent the communities we serve. WOW! Has it already been a year?! It seems like yesterday I was just getting settled and starting my new adventure. My first non-profit. My first community organization. And definitely my first rodeo in long term care. This combo has given me the experience of a lifetime! I want to thank all of the individuals who have helped me in this journey. I have learned a great deal, forged many new relationships, and quite frankly had the time of my life! So many community leaders, business leaders, and influencers have taken the time to work with me, provide feedback, and inspire me – for that I am eternally grateful! Domo Arigato!! But my biggest thank you goes to the Keiro Northwest team. You all have rallied, pulled together, engaged in tough conversations and fought by my side – and for that I cannot express how fortunate I am to work with all of you. You all inspire me every day and have showed me how at Keiro we make Every Day the Best Day! Although I was in a temporary position for this past year, I want to thank you for your vote of confidence. I will work hard every day to not let you down! Thank you to the Board of Directors – I look forward to our continued partnership and am grateful for your support of me and the entire KNW team. Presents Keiro Northwest (formerly Issei/Nikkei Concerns) was founded in 1976 to address an urgent need to provide better nursing and related health care for the elderly. Japanese American community leaders – seeing the aging of the first generation of pioneers – were committed to providing a dignified environment for these individuals to spend their remaining years. Defying long odds, an uneven history of collaboration and vocal skeptics, these community leaders established Seattle Keiro, a Japanese nursing home. Over the years the community built and continued to grow a thriving nonprofit organization to support not only the nursing home, but growing programing such as Rehab Care, Assisted Living, Home Care, Kokoro Kai (adult day center), and Horizons (continuing education and travel). As time has moved on, the needs of elders, how they want to age, and the continued growing challenges of the healthcare industry have presented a new set of challenges for Keiro Northwest. Keiro Northwest recognizes that the future of elder care is providing services that allow our loved ones to age in place. And this puts us, once again, in a place where we will need to defy long odds, need exceptional collaboration, and overcome very vocal skeptics. The 40 More Years campaign is our rallying cry. To pull together the community that founded and grew this organization to what it is today. To rally the growing community that uses and benefits from our services today. And to call to action the future community that will someday need our services. A portion of proceeds will go towards growing our programs that will better meet the needs of the evolution of aged services, for now and in the future. A portion of proceeds will go towards the Keiro Northwest Endowment Fund to benefit future generations for years to come. We believe that the culturally sensitive services we provide are valued and important for the aged. Without our services, the aged services provided will only put us back to where we once were 40+ years ago.

SECOND 2018 TOWN HALL EXCERPTS
Keiro Northwest held its second Town Hall on August 9th, 2018 at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church. Over 80 community members and employees attended the event to hear updates on the current state and future direction of Keiro Northwest. Here are some excerpts of the discussion: Impact of the Revised Mission Statement: Keiro Northwest updated its mission in 2016 to more broadly serve the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community. The revised mission is “We empower our Asian community through a continuum of exceptional health care services that are culturally sensitive.� Following the mission change in 2016, the Keiro Rehabilitation and Care Center (KRCC) has expanded to now serve: 32% Chinese Descent 30% Japanese Descent 12% Vietnamese Descent 12% Other API Descent 13% Other Descent Key Statistics: The average length of stay for a long-term resident at KRCC is 3.86 years vs. the national average of 2.44 years. The average cost of care at KRCC is $350 per person, per day. 75% of KRCC residents are on Medicaid, which provides a daily reimbursement rate of $232 per person.
Historical Operating Financials: Keiro Northwest has historically incurred operating losses since at least 2011, which has typically been covered through donations. However, regulatory changes in 2015, primarily the Seattle minimum wage increase, and the 24 hour / 7 days a week registered nurse (RN) coverage requirement, caused a sharp gap between revenue and expenses, far more than can be covered by donations. This was further exacerbated in 2017 as the minimum wage hike and a nursing shortage drove increased costs. Below is a table showing operating revenue and expenses for 2011 through 2017.

Actions Underway to Address the Deficit: Keiro Northwest intends to be here for 40 More Years, and is actively working to develop sustainable operations. Actions being taken include: 1) Paying competitive wages to attract key talent. 2) Remodeling one wing to operate as a transitional care unit (TCU) for short-term rehabilitation care, while maintaining a high Medicaid census (potential gains of $800K-$1.2M per year). 3) Placing residents in wings to group similar acuity level residents to improve care and staff efficiency (potential savings $900K-$1.3M per year).

Meet the CEO MEET OUR NEW CEO A fun conversation to get to know our new CEO better! Q. Right to the point, what will be your #1 mission in this new role? A. Defining our mission. Over the years our mission has evolved and right now we’re in an interesting time. Four years ago the mission changed to serve the broader API community. I think we can acknowledge that we didn’t quite execute in a way that brought the broader API community in, and informed the Nikkei community as to what this meant. Now that I have the reins, my priority is to define “community” for Keiro Northwest and explore/understand what this means for our future. Q. What do you see as the biggest challenge in your new role? A. The biggest disadvantage I have in this new role is that there was no one permanently in the CEO role for my first 11 months. As Interim you’re limited to the change you can implement or influence. I wanted to be respectful of that, but now that I have been given the reins it’s going to be harder to come out of the gate and operate in a way that I would have otherwise. That will make it harder for me to influence change, but I have faith the KNW team is ready to get to work! Q. Alright, we have to know, what’s something that you would consider a weakness or something you don’t like to do in your job? A. ((Laughing)) PLENTY! Very early on in my life I had an amazing teacher who really embedded in me the value of being a lifelong student. It impressed on me that I should always be looking to improve, to continually grow and learn. I came out of college as an accounting major and started my career at a Big 4 firm, but over the years my career blossomed and took me on a journey where I found, believe it or not, that accounting really wasn’t my passion. I’m never going to hate on the “bean counters” – that’s my roots! But I found that leading people, operations, and technology – were my passion and what I excelled at. Having an accounting background has given me an advantage in these areas – but PLEASE do not make me do journal entries!! ((Laughing)) I love being out there talking with people, influencing change, and bringing all aspects of operations together to achieve a mission. Q. Rumor has it that you were a college athlete, is this true? And if so, how do you see that experience helping you as a leader? A. A LONG TIME AGO! LOL – I no longer play, the knees and hips don’t allow for that, but yes, I’m a very proud alumni of Seattle University where I was indeed the captain of the women’s basketball team. Not just that experience, but sports in general taught me some of life’s greatest lessons. Coaches aren’t always “fair,” you have teammates who come from all different types of backgrounds – but you still have to work together, sometimes the odds are stacked against you, and the fans, some of whom can’t even dribble a ball, are always quick to criticize. What’s important is lacing up, getting out there, and giving it your all. Q. A little birdie told us that you like inspirational leadership? What does that mean and what inspires you? A. It may have to do with my athletic background, but I believe in visualization and inspiration. I’m often giving out quotes about greatness or teamwork – you can see some of our quotes throughout our buildings and in our offices. Succinct phrases, by those who have experienced and achieved, can be just what you need when times are tough or you’re in need of motivation. Right now, every morning, I re-read the quote from Teddy Roosevelt’s speech referred to as the “Man in the Arena”. It reminds me that it’s easier to point a finger and criticize than being the man in the arena fighting the fight. I’m a doer and a fighter – and it’s what I need, what I will need, as we put Keiro on the path to greatness. Q. Tell us something folks may not know about you. A. Hmmmmm… I’m kind of an open book so there really isn’t much I wouldn’t divulge. But for those that maybe don’t know me – I would say I don’t fit a stereotype. I’m a huge nerd, but was a big jock. I value introspection and meditation, but I’m the first to socialize and have a big laugh. I love and understand numbers, but I love leading people. I’m a huge fan of the Seahawks, but my 15 years of dance taught me to love ballet and the arts. I would say, don’t try to paint me in a box. It is probably why when Jeffrey hired me I was overly excited because it was both the CFO & COO jobs!

Meet the Staff MEET THE 2018 NEW OR INTERNALLY PROMOTED TEAM MEMBERS HERE TO MAKE EVERY DAY THE BEST DAY 2018 has been quite the roller coaster as we worked diligently to fill key vacancies. Unfortunately, 2017 saw many dear employees depart, leaving us with 38 open key positions (including CEO, CFO, COO, Administrator, Director of Nursing) and a number of support roles. Without these key roles, Keiro Northwest’s operations underperformed and our valued employees were overworked. As a point of reference, HR operated in 2017 with a single person handling recruiting, new hire orientation, compliance monitoring, training, and benefits administration for 300+ employees. Consequently, our average time to fill a key position was 60 days vs. the recruitment industry average of 40 days. Since roles couldn’t be filled quickly, employees worked overtime and some programs, e.g., Home Care, couldn’t expand due to a lack of caregivers. Thankfully, our board of directors recognized the value of properly staffing HR and now our average time to fill is a remarkable 28 days. We have worked very hard to fill the 38 key positions, and 52 support positions over the last 9 months. Sometimes with new people, and sometimes with our own valued employees who were ready to step up. So YES! Lots of new faces, but in roles very much needed to ensure that our entire team is Making Every Day the Best Day! REHAB GYM MOVE Clarification on the Rehabilitation Gym Move There appears to be continued conversation around the rebab gym move. We feel it’s important to make available as much information to the community as possible. Unfortunately, a complete and robust risk analysis was not completed during the original rehab gym remodel. One of the biggest risk factors that was missed was that the main entrance to the rehab room was through our back service hall. Crates of supplies and large dining containers often line the hallway serving as obstacles for those trying to get better. In addition, there were often spills and water because of dining service that presented as a safety hazard for our residents. It is the licensed Administrator’s job to ensure that the facility and the care we provide is safe and prevents risk. As such, the operational decision was made to move the rehab upstairs to better serve the needs of our residents. A significant change for Keiro has been ensuring that risk analysis and adequate business models are performed going forward. We thank you for your understanding and patience as we embed this into our culture going. PLEASE NOTE: We have heard feedback regarding the donations used to fund the rehab gym remodel. Please note that donations designated and raised for the rehab gym remodel was $17K, and the total cost of the project was $316K. In order to make up for the difference, prior management released a general donation that was not specifically designated for this project. Current management has reached out to the family and legal counsel of this donor and confirmed that the funds were not specifically designated for the rehab center. We appreciate all of our donors and value their contributions, and have been working to build reporting that will show how their funds are used. Stay tuned for future updates on this topic!
