Yone Terada, Seattle Keiro resident and former Seattle Keiro Receptionist I came in on a Monday and was already at work Tuesday morning. That was the best moment of my adult life, or 25 years with Keiro. I loved working here from day one. I could honestly say when I started work here, everyone was very helpful, very friendly. I mean everyone, in every department. It wasn’t just the office people, and I enjoyed being at the front desk, greeting the visitors, saying “hi,” and smiling. I enjoyed the family members that came. I just really enjoyed every part of being a receptionist.

Tosh Okamoto, Nikkei Concerns co-founder, honorary board member, and Nikkei Manor resident My fondest memories include both community and personal experiences. I remember how our community joined together to purchase the original Seattle Keiro Nursing home, built and dedicated the current Seattle Keiro, and developed Nikkei Manor. We are grateful that Toshi’s and my mothers were Seattle Keiro residents, and now we are residents of Nikkei Manor Continued on page 4

What does it mean to celebrate 40 years of service to community? It is certainly a recognition of all that has gone before, acknowledging those who committed so much energy, talent, and skills to accomplish so much and arrive at this point where we can say, “job well-done.” It also means that the Board of Directors considered how we build on that legacy so that we honor our predecessors and remain relevant and forward-thinking as the health care industry rapidly changes and our community evolves with many shifts within the world of elder care. It has been a remarkable journey during these 40 years, and as you see by our growing services and programs, it is a journey we committed to taking into the future by: • responding to the needs and wishes of our clientele – thank you to all who give us feedback: we’re listening! • providing excellent quality of care and customer service – we work at continual improvements and innovations, staying attuned to the best options in practice in the world of health • engaging community at all stages of life – with the direction toward health and wellness, we’re building an organization for every age, such as with the annual Health Fair • embarking into new territory, literally, and in a vision that takes us on new paths yet builds on the strong foundation we’ve been fortunate to inherit. With all this in mind, it is thrilling to see that our new name, Keiro Northwest, truly captures this transformation. We invite you to celebrate Nikkei Concerns and continue the journey with us, as Keiro Northwest.

With gratitude,

Julie Ann Oiye Board President

Dear Friends, “This place is different!”… was the first thing our new Ombudsperson said after touring Seattle Keiro. She was truly impressed and moved, sharing what she saw, felt and experienced… and, in many respects, it reflected our founding values of Respect, Trust, Kimochi, Quality of Life, and Family. I have actually heard this from many about ALL of our programs, staff and community! One of our founders, Tosh Okamoto, reminded me of the tremendous courage, risk, and ganbaru spirit required to open Seattle Keiro despite experiencing multiple challenges. They “stayed the course,” and we benefit from of a rich array of programs and wonderful history of service to the community… with the community. “Time stands still for no one”… you may recall reading in previous Tayoris, in the North American Post, and/or in conversations of the unprecedented change we are experiencing via Health Care Reform and an evolving community. And in the spirit of our Founders, the Board and staff have worked diligently over the last three years to understand the implications, challenges and opportunities… We are very grateful for all of your ideas and thoughts… With your feedback in mind, we hone our strategic plan and enhance current services (e.g. short-term rehab), “roll out” new services (e.g. home based), all while building and exploring new partnerships at the local and national levels.

NIKKEI HORIZONS Continuing Education Program 206.726.6465

In 1975, Issei Concerns was “born,” and a year later Seattle Keiro opened its doors. In 1981, our name changed to Nikkei Concerns to more appropriately reflect our community’s multiple generations… and on January 1, 2016, our name will change to Keiro Northwest! The name honors our legacy and enduring values while launching a new era of service for our community!

and appreciate the excellent care. I credit our staff, volunteers, and caring community, of which I am proud to be a member.

Jeffrey Hattori, Nikkei Concerns CEO Gina Suguro, Kokoro Kai and I have so many wonderful memories… Nikkei Concerns volunteer one in particular was when I was a 14-year-old weekend janitor of the original Keiro. My work ethic wasn’t very good, so I spent 1/3 of the time doing my job, another 1/3 of the time sleeping in the janitor’s closet and the last 1/3 of the time talking with residents.

Aldena Hutchinson, Seattle Keiro Unit Clerk and 37-year Nikkei Concerns veteran My most exciting time working for Keiro was watching and being a part of the construction of our present Seattle Keiro building. We went from serving 65 residents to improving the quality of life for 150 residents, continually serving our community and supporting our staff. What we have accomplished today is truly amazing!!!!!

Both of my parents are Kibei (American-born but raised in Japan) and most of my relatives are in Japan… so I really didn’t know what it meant to be Japanese American. Fortunately, I have some command of the Japanese language and through my conversations with the Issei residents I learned about who I am, whose shoulders I stood on, and the history of our community… plus the Issei got a big kick out of my lousy Japanese!

My favorite memory is when we went in a drive around with Kokoro Kai. We came up to Rainier Ave. and Franklin High School. A participant (I’ll call him Mr. T, he has since passed away) started telling me about stories of when he was younger – running around the neighborhood with his friends. We were laughing at the things they did! His short-term memory was nearly gone but his longterm memory was intact. Mr. T was generally quiet but that day he was so open and smiling so much. The area brought back good memories he was eager to share. We tend to forget – all adults were once kids too!

Sid Capuchino, 3-year Seattle Keiro Housekeeping employee My best memory here at Seattle Keiro is when I first became a member of

New name for Nikkei Concerns

continued from page 3

Some things never change The Nikkei Concerns Way, our fundamental philosophy that espouses what we value as an organization and as individuals, may get a new name, too, but the beliefs remain the same and have for 40 years. We will continue to make every day the best day for residents, participants, staff, and community. Our values – respect, trust, kimochi (compassion), quality of life, and family – continue to motivate us to provide exceptional service at all levels and in all departments. Employees who provide our home care service that helps your loved ones today are as dedicated as those who so gently cared for your grandmother or mother at Seattle Keiro 20 or 30 years ago. We are embracing the familiar keiro (“respect for the elderly” in Japanese), which honors the legacy of the past and is familiar to many inside and outside of the community, even more so than Nikkei Concerns. (Seattle Keiro Rehabilitation & Care Center, will be renamed Keiro Northwest Rehabilitation & Care Center.)

Living legacy The legacy that our Founders established was not to resist change but to blaze new trails into unfamiliar territory, to take risks for the well-being of the community as they did 40 years ago. Our choices are influenced by external circumstances and may vary from what our Founders first built, but the motivations and purpose behind them are the same. Promote the community’s health and wellness. Provide relevant services to all – services that cherish community values. Be there for those in need.

Rehab

Restorative

F rom concept to reality

The Rehab Renovation is on! Construction is complete, the dust has settled, and the beautiful Rehab/Restorative Gym is ready to guide patients to wellness. Once we receive our final approvals from the powers that be, the new gym will be open for business. Rehab and restorative staff will move into their new digs and continue to improve the quality of life for so many. The new Gym complements the adjacent Keiro Garden (a great change of scenery for therapy outdoors) and brings nature inside with lots of warm wood and even a saltwater aquarium. The unique Occupational Therapy Suite adds a real-life dimension to rehab. The Occupational Therapy Suite has two main sections: a kitchen/laundry/bedroom area and a fully – functional bathroom. Patients will practice cooking, cleaning, stocking the fridge and pantry, getting in and out of bed, and doing laundry. In the bathroom, they will learn how to safely shower and use the grab bars. After mastering the Occupational Therapy Suite, patients will be fully prepared for life at home. Check out our new space! You are invited to the grand opening party on August 26, 3-7 p.m. (RSVP Linda Asami by August 21 at lasami@nikkeiconcerns.org or 206.726.6501.) The Legacy of Justice Project combines art, history, and social justice to honor Gordon Hirabayashi’s achievements and efforts. The public got a sneak peek at the project’s education and art installations (including a piece from our own cofounder Tosh Okamoto) at InterIm’s Hirabayashi Place, a new affordable housing site in Seattle.

Nikkei Concerns, in partnership with several community organizations and many generous community and corporate sponsors, brought film director Junichi Suzuki’s Nisei Trilogy series to the community. All three films played to sold-out crowds of all ages. Special thanks to Junichi Suzuki and SIFF. TAY O R I Fall 2015

Steak, mmm… The Ayame Kai Guild brought the barbequed goodness of delicious steak and community cohesiveness to their 6th Annual Steak Dinner. Skilled grillmasters like Page Tanagi kept up with the crowd, who enjoyed their dinners with sides of homemade tsukemono, Bake Sale treats, raffle prize drawings, and a silent auction.

Setsuko Evans, Nikkei Horizons’ zokei bonsai instructor, was honored at the recent Nikkei Horizons Instructor Appreciation Luncheon. She retired after almost 20 years of sharing her time and talents with hundreds of students. The guests ate, drank, and made merry, with performances by students and professional saxophonist David Layton.

Seattle Keiro resident Tomoko Hayes won an Elsa balloon sculpture at the 4th Annual Living Well Health Fair, bigger and better than ever. Guests in search of better health & wellness discovered fun exercise like Candi Foon’s Chair Yoga, the Brain Health Cooking Demo, the Healthy Home Seminar, and 75 exhibitors with lots of knowledge and free product samples.

Dancers, drummers, audience members, and volunteers brought the boom to the annual Seattle Keiro Summer Festival. Our own bon odori celebration gathered folks from near and far for beloved Seattle Keiro-style traditions – taiko drumming, shaved ice, folk dancing, and the Electric Slide.
