John Adams John Adams was one of the founding fathers of the United States. He fought for American Independence as a Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress. He was a member of the team that worked on theDeclaration of Independence and one of only two people who signed the Declaration to later become president (the other was Thomas Jefferson).
George Washington George was one of Virginia's delegates at the First and Second Continental Congress. This was a group of representatives from each colony who decided to fight the British together. In May of 1775 they appointed Washington as general of the Continental Army.
Samuel Adams Adams was selected to represent the Massachusetts colony at the First Continental Congress in 1774. They gathered to send a letter to King George III in protest of the taxes. They also planned to meet again.
Benedict Arnold At the start of the Revolutionary War, Arnold was elected as captain of the Connecticut militia. He led the militia north to Boston after the Battles of Lexington and Concord to help with the siege of Boston. He then received a colonel's commission to attack Fort Ticonderoga. Together with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, he took Ticonderoga in one of the first major victories for the colonies.
Paul Revere Paul Revere was a patriot in the American Revolution. He is most famous for his ride and warning to the colonists that the British were coming.
Valley Forge Valley Forge was where the American Continental Army made camp during the winter of 1777-1778. It was here that the American forces became a true fighting unit. Valley Forge is often called the birthplace of the American Army.
The Declaration of Independence On July 4, 1776 the Congress officially adopted the final version of the Declaration of Independence. This day is still celebrated in the United States as Independence Day.
Battles of Saratoga The Battles of Saratoga were a series of battles that culminated in the Battle of Saratoga and the surrender of British General John Burgoyne. This decisive victory by the Americans was a turning point of the Revolutionary War.
Life as a Revolutionary War Soldier The other group of American soldiers was the Continental Army. The Continental Congress established the Continental Army as the first real army of the United States. They made George Washington the commander. The army was made up of paid volunteers who enlisted for a period of time. At first the enlistments were for shorter periods like six months. Later on in the war, the enlistments were as long as three years. The soldiers in the Continental Army trained and drilled as fighting men.
Patrick Henry Henry again served as governor for Virginia and on the state legislature. He argued against the initial version of the US Constitution. He did not want it passed without the Bill of Rights. Through his arguments the Bill of Rights ded to the Constitution.
