s one who drinks in design like some swallow coffee, I am always falling for something new. I loved our last issue of Be loved; the photography was breathtaking. Personally, I was left wanting my magazine to be more of a marriage between all-things-wedding and good design. Since its launch in October, I’ve poured over design blogs, books, webinars and queried some of my design heros and have come up with a new look for Be loved. I hope you will welcome it into your hearts and onto your coffee table with joy! Over the past few months, I have had the pleasure of meeting many new friends all over the world, and invited a few of them to share themselves with you in this issue. Please enjoy their beautiful ideas and be as inspired by them as I am. One of my favorite new additions is in our Real Wedding features. Instead of sharing the couples stories written by the bride, groom or wedding planner, I’ve enlisted creative writers to write beautiful essays based loosely upon a day or two (or more) in the lives of our couples. May you again find beauty and feel love as you spend time in these pages.

eing in the wedding industry, it’s practically impossible not to re-design your own wedding repeatedly. Especially when it seems that designers create more stunning gowns and artisans come up with more creative pieces every year. Combined with the consuming nature of Pinterest, the replanning becomes the inevitable product of wedding creatives. Since everything is more fun with friends, I asked a few of my industry friends to share what they would do if plannning their own weddings again using Pinterest as their planning resource. Starting with mine: My real wedding was a garden wedding with way too many guests! If I were to plan my own wedding again...today...this is what I would do:

I don’t even have to think about it. My dress is the number one thing I would do differently. Even when I got married, I didn’t like my dress. A roommates mom made it for me, and it just wasn’t me. It was close, but...well, no cigar. I was too nice to say anything besides, “Thanks!” Today, the gowns are gorgeous, and it is hard to pick a favorite. The one thing I do know is that it would have layers and layers and layers and maybe a few more layers in the skirt. photo credit: ida sjostedt

I remember the very day I was introduced to a peony. It has remained my favorite flower over all of the years since. Even with all of the thousands of brides using them at their weddings, I will never tire of this bloom. Ever. photo credit: raya carlisle photography, bouquet by toast

These invitations by Hazel Wonderland make me weak in the knees. A lush, green countryside is, to me, the most beautiful sight. That and the downtown sidewalks of a city. Does that make me complicated? photo credit: hazel wonderland

A garland made of greenery would be found in all the right places. These chairs remind me of a cafe in my home-city, and are a must. I particularly love the soft, rich color of the wood. photo credit: erin hearts court, florals by bash please

I simply adore organically shaped centerpieces. The gentle pops of color and the ancient compote rank high on my list of beautiful things. I attempted this sort of arrangement as a DIY project at my wedding. I’m not a florist and was not successful. I’d leave it to a pro if I had a do-over! photo credit: rylee hitchner photography

Mona Abo Said Owner & Creative Director Birds & Honey Events Let me set the stage: My hunny and I would elope to some gorgeous little spot, probably somewhere in Paris. Just the two of us without a care in the world! Elizabeth Messina would capture all of the gorgeousness and I would have the amazing Julie Song Ink create some gorgeous paper for us. Without further ado here is what I would do:

Ceremony Spot: I would love to do something secluded and oh - so - romantic with some darling chandaliers hanging out of no where! photo credit: jose villa

The Dress: This time around I think I would want to be a tad more covered up. No more sweetheart neckline or strapless. I have fallen in love with the idea of being a bit more covered up. photo credit: elizabeth messina

The Bouquet: First time around I had no idea anything besides peonies even existed so this time around I would want a variety of peonies, garden roses, anomies and all the gorgeous little bits of greenery you could imagine! photo credit: melanie duerkopp

The Cake: I was such a ball of nerves on my wedding day that I didnt even get to enjoy some cake so this time around I would combine all things pretty + gold with all things tasty...maybe even some kind of vanilla bean concoction! photo credit: vicky starz photography

The Paper: Julie Song Ink is my hero when it comes to all things pretty and paper so in my dream world she would help me create something that oozes romance and color all into one! photo credit: julie song ink

If I were to plan my wedding right now I’d probably do a destination wedding to Barcelona, Spain. A Claire Pettibone dress with a tan-ish gold sash and lots of detailing reminds of the all the details on the buildings in Spain. I’m loving the sunset hued bouquet with fresh spring greens, as well.

McKenzie & Alex may 12, 2012 It was a typical cold and dreary January when the seed of a not-so-typical love was planted. The crisp, colorful leaves of fall had given way to the white décor of winter, meaning that winter semester was beginning. Alex was running late, as had been and would be, the case of his academic career. After darting into his classroom, Alex slipped into an aisle seat and settled in for what looked to be another uneventful day of schoolwork, homework, wash, rinse, and repeat. Glancing casually to his left he was instantly taken aback by what he saw. Sitting across the aisle was McKenzie, existing in perfect, unannounced beauty. Her beautiful dark brown hair and delicate, porcelain face seemed to glow effervescently in the simple classroom setting in which she sat. Alex struggled to maintain his composure as he was sure he was sitting next to an angel. He knew that he would never forgive himself if he didn’t attempt to talk to the gorgeous girl who was making his heart pound so erratically. The rest of the class time consisted of Alex making small talk, trying to form a connection that would ensure a rendezvous. McKenzie sweetly, yet carefully, returned his friendly advances, making

it clear that she was currently in a relationship. The cautious flirtatious banter and friendly back and forth continued as they each went about their scholarly pursuits. Time continued to pass as it so seamlessly does and eventually the end of the school year loomed near. Although the seasons had changed, the errant relationship between Alex and McKenzie still hung in an undefined space of acquaintancy. Alex had still not given up hope in the potential for something to transpire between himself and the stunning girl in his biology class. He had been valiant in his effort to maintain a cordial relationship with McKenzie and had been given enough encouragement to continue cultivating the seed of hope inside of his heart. Acknowledging the fact that summer break was close at hand, Alex extended an invitation to McKenzie to see him perform at a local music café. She graciously accepted. As Alex took the stage, the cute brunette sat smiling in the audience, but with an unexpected guest: her boyfriend. Though at first, and understandably, less than enthused to see the woman of his desire bring her current beau to his performance, he became increasingly aware of the ample space between

McKenzie and her partner. As the performance continued on, the eyes thrown toward the stage had become unmistakable. The seed that Alex had been nurturing all this time had officially taken root. He had successfully captured the attention of his long time crush. McKenzie had realized her feelings for her handsome classmate, and the boyfriend soon received a farewell handshake. With this newfound realization of their budding feelings, they made the most of the last three days before the great interrupter, that is summer, would put a great distance between them. Now hundreds of miles away, with a seed that had taken root, a love was destined to grow in the summer sun. The proceeding months were filled with all day text messages starting with good morning and ending with good night, supplemented by exchanges of tambourine ballads, typewriters, handwritten sentiments, and mix CD’s. These bits of love watered the seeds inside their hearts and enabled a steady, deep growth. Despite the undesired distance between them, no amount of mileage could shrivel the exciting sparks of attraction, the pair fell in love over enveloped letters and 3 hour phone calls.

What is a typical morning like for you? My typical morning consists of waking up at 5 or 6 in the morning, heading to my little studio, checking my email and responding to everyone. Sometimes I am not fully awake, but yet already up and typing multiple emails. However, I try to be as organized as possible in the mornings. Some good music helps me get focused. After I am done with emails and updating my Facebook page, I make myself some yoghurt based breakfast and fruit salad, and the fun part of my day starts right away. Cutting fabric, preparing silk to form it into roses, peonies and blossoming buds. Sewing, creating new headpieces for customers, ordering supplies and sending boxes to happy brides. Those are the main ingredients of my morning. Where did Laceielle Roselle get its start? It all started as a challenge, as a part of finding who I am and what I am capable of. I’ve always been very creative but I could not quite figure out what I really wanted to do. Then I sat down, took my silk threads, velvet ribbons, beads and sequins and started creating. I felt amazing when doing that. Slowly but surely I discovered that making headpieces is what I love doing. It’s a very rewarding job!

What is your most favorite thing about your career? Feeling that I’ve got a gift from God, He made me special and I’m blessed to be able to have discovered my talent to create my headpieces and pay tribute to what I was given. We’re all special in our own way but it takes time to find out who we really are, but once we know the truth, we’re free in every possible aspect of it. I’m happy to know my talent is literally in my hands and I love helping people feel and look beautiful when creating my adornments. Besides, it’s a very rewarding job filled with excitement and its challenges, but every time I succeed, my joy has no limits. It’s worth every sleepless night!

interview how you would spend an ideal weekend? I love everything colorful, and I try achieving it on a daily basis, but what I always enjoy is waking up early in the morning, getting dressed, leaving the house with a cup of hot chocolate to stand by our huge pines in our garden listening to birds chirping. Sometimes, when I get lucky, I see squirrels jumping on tree branches. I love being connected to nature that is so breathtaking. Doing those little things remind me of what my grandmother used to say. She doesn’t say it anymore, but I know she remembers that a long time ago when I was a girl with big dreams, she used to say “You’re the sweetest child of God, nature is your shelter and you are all perfectly safe in it.” I love standing in the mornings looking at the blue sky and feel free. And I feel humble and grateful. On the other hand, my ideal weekend means a lot of walking with my husband, listening to my zebra finches who put a smile on my face, special moments when my husband comes from behind to kiss me and to tell me he loves seeing me so happy when I create my little masterpieces. Just feeling loved and being able to love is my daily cure for anything. Making my headpieces and enjoying long hours of creating beaded embroideries. As long as I have all those ingredients, I will truly enjoy my weekends and my life in general. Do you have a favorite way to unwind and relax? By lighting a lot (literally a lot) of candles in my bathroom, and listening to classic music when soaking in my bath tub. My imagination always takes me back to my childhood. Thanks to my parents, I had an amazing childhood. I call those years “the golden years of my life.” They made me who I am, and when I am ready to relax, I picture myself running across green fields generously covered in blue bells and I swear I could feel the wind playing with my hair, my feet feel the strength of earth and my heart beats faster. It’s so whimsical and yet so real because when I dream, I re-live my happy moments.

Pinterest, Instagram or Facebook? Honestly, I am a big fan of Pinterest and Instagram. They both have an incredibly huge source of inspiration and ideas. Instagram allows me to pretend to be somewhat a photographer that my father always wanted me to be. It’s a great place to gather inspiration and share new ideas!

What is your favorite book and/ or who is your favorite author? Ever since I’ve started learning French I discovered how much I am attracted to French culture and history. I simply love how colorful, incredibly passionately French people express themselves. One of the most adored authors of mine is, of course, Victor Hugo with the world’s most amazing book “Les Misérables.” However, there’s another author who succeeded in catching my breath. Sylvie Germain with her astonishing book “Le Livre Des Nuits” ( “The Book of Nights.”) This is a poetic saga that sweeps its way through a century of French history by following the generations of a symbol-rich family and it takes place in 1870 in France embracing lives of hard working people who treasure family values, who know passionate relationships, madness, sorrow, incestuous and bold love. I’ve never ever been that addicted to any other book than “The Book of Night,” but overall, the book is a gloriously beautiful, gemstudded tapestry of human desire and suffering. It’s truly worth reading!

real wedding

Jenessa & Mike september 28, 2012 I don’t remember how long he’d been sitting there, nor when he first walked in, but something about him wouldn’t let me be. As the hostess, I had some liberties, which I rarely used. I didn’t often have reason to give anyone a free drink, but this guy was different. He was simple. He didn’t say much. His eyes were friendly, though, almost inviting. He gave me a slight wave as he walked out of my restaurant and into the ski shop across the street. I casually hurried to his table, sweeping up his receipt from underneath his plate. Mike. Mike what? How was I supposed to find him again? Yes, this town was small, but ski bums named Mike were a dime a dozen. Waiting for him to crave a thin-crust pizza special with a Coke seemed hopeless. I did what any reasonable girl would do. I followed him. I watched him outfit a nervous red headed eight year-old with skis. Turns out, Mike is a Freestyle kids ski coach - a pretty talented one at that. He loves kids. Loves them. Almost as

much as he loves working on his motorcycle. The one he spent years saving for; his Triumph. We exchanged greetings, chatted about the snow. We agreed it was a good winter, lots of powder. Mountain biking, as luck would have it, is a favorite past time for both of us. So are road trips. And camping. And baking; me baking, him eating. (My mind begins racing as I’m hearing my heart whisper that it has found its match.) Suddenly realizing that his shop is void of customers and the boss is locking up, he gives me his number and I scuttle out. I knew he was mine. From that moment on, I knew it. It took six years for the rest of the world to know it. We’ve made the mountains our home. Mike spends his days carving up their faces. I spend my days in their shadows below. There is a peaceful tranquility offered in a mountain’s embrace that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. We are proof of it.

real wedding

Rachel & John november 3, 2012 I gaze at the hypnotic swish of my wedding dress in the mirror, my stomach tingling with butterflies, my heart bursting for joy.

to be perfect and glamorous, but felt inadequate and deceptive. I soon found myself moving back to my hometown in Idaho.

After a long pause, we ran toward each other and ended in an embrace that felt so warm and real and right.

But it’s not the first time I’ve seen this sight looking back at me. Four years ago, I stood in a bridal shop not unlike this one, with a similar dress flowing to the floor. But oh, what a different feeling in my heart.

Years later, on a night out with my girlfriends of dinner and dancing, I wore my most comfortable jeans, boots, and a plaid shirt. As we waited in line at a local country bar, I felt someone staring at me. I turned around. John and I dated nearly seven years ago, when we met in Los Angeles. It had been six years since I’d seen him.

We talked for hours, catching up on the past six years of our lives. Then it was his turn to break my heart. He told me that the very next day he was being sent to Guam for two months of military training. I was utterly devastated.

I had made arrangements, chosen a flower, settled on colors, and picked a dress. That dress, while beautiful, it had potential to fit everywhere except my heart. The dress represented to me the relationship with my fiancé. He was a good man – intelligent, kind, caring, and affectionate, still, we didn’t fit. I called off the wedding three weeks prior to the set date. The next year brought me financial prosperity and independence. I loved the world in which I lived and the people I was able to surround myself with. I was moving forward in the quest to find myself as a successful, young professional. Still, I felt a void. I felt like I was in a designer dress. It appeared

In that moment, we locked eyes. A flicker from my past flooded my memory. He treated me like a princess. He knew that he was going to marry me, but I broke John’s heart. At that stage of my life, I had decided that I needed time to myself, time to discover who I was. He couldn’t bear to just be friends. We went our separate ways and I became engaged to another.

That night, we made the first of several commitments to each other. We promised to keep in touch throughout his deployment. Two months and more than 80 letters later, he returned. We knew after that brief time away from each other, we were never going to be apart again.

Now I stand in the mirror and realize with satisfaction and awe, this is the perfect wedding dress for me – stylish, simple, Now, in what felt like a lifetime and authentic – just like John later, I was looking at a striking and the future that lies before man, who I only recognized as a us. We have found the right fit, grown-up, military version of my perfectly tailored to complete each other. dear friend, John. essay by gennie soriano

entertaining r a spber r y w hit e chocol at e scon es makes 12-14 scones

ingredients 1 ¾ cup all purpose flour 1 ¼ teaspoon baking powder 3 tablespoons granulated sugar ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup cold unsalted (or salted) butter 2 large eggs ⅓ cup heavy cream ½ cup white chocolate chips ½ cup frozen raspberries Preheat the oven to 350 ˚ F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (so very essential.)

Sofia, 4, was our official pastry eater!

M i x ed Berry p u f f

serves 4-6

ingredients 1 sheet frozen puff pastry 1 egg, lightly beaten 3 teaspoons white sugar ⅓ cup light brown sugar 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste zest of one lime 1 cup fresh blueberries, rinsed ½ cup fresh blackberries, rinsed

In another bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the cream and whisk until combined. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until fully combined. Add the chocolate chips and raspberries and gently stir just until combined. The mixture will be dry and crumbly and won’t hold together well. You will wonder how these will ever turn out. But they will, and they will be so good!

Preheat the oven to 350 ˚ F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Find your biggest spoon and scoop up a heaping mound of the scone mixture. Press firmly as you slide it off of the spoon and onto the baking sheet. No need to flatten the scones, but you can shape them a bit if you’d like.

Allow the pastry to reach room temperature then gently unfold and lay flat on the baking sheet. Brush with egg and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon white sugar. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until puffed and golden. Let cool then transfer to serving dish.

If desired (I like to do this,) brush the tops of the scones with a little heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar (or regular granulated sugar works, too.)

Meanwhile, mix the sour cream, remaining white sugar, brown sugar, vanilla and half of the lime zest. Spread over the cooled pastry and top with the washed berries.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Let sit a few minutes before serving.

Dust with confectioner’s sugar and remaining lime zest.

88

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the butter using two knives.

T h e pe r f ect bru nch sa l ad serves 4-6

ingredients 1 bunch watercress 1 small grapefruit 1 small ripe avocado 3 slices prosciutto a few slices of romano a handful of chopped parsley dressing 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 3 tablespoons blood-orange infused olive oil Combine the olive oil and vinegar in a small jar with a lid (I use an old jam jar) and shake well. For the salad, wash the watercress and parsley, and set on a paper towel to dry. Slice the skin and pith from the grapefruit,

being careful to not cut away too much of the pulp. Then slice the grapefruit in half and carefully remove the flesh slices. I like to do this over a bowl so that I don’t waste any bits that fall out of my hands. Half, pit and slice the avocado, then slide an avocado peeler (or spoon handle if you don’t have one) between the skin and flesh to gently remove the slices. Chop a handful of fresh parsley and slice wafer thin sheets of romano for garnish. I always go a little heavy on the garnish, but it is all personal taste. Toss the watercress, grapefruit, avocado and prosciutto together. Top with the parsley and romano and drizzle the dressing to your liking.

Enjoy! be loved | issue 2

ingredients 3 english muffins 4 slices canadian bacon or ham, cubed 8-10 stalks young asparagus 14-16 ounces chicken broth 1 cup whole milk 3 eggs 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard ½ teaspoon salt 1½ cups grated cheddar cheese (any variety) softened butter for the baking dish Butter a small (roughly 9” x 7” x 2”) baking dish. Wash and chop the asparagus then add to a pot of boiling chicken broth. Boil for 2 minutes then transfer to a collander and immediately rinse with cold water. (Vegetables can be substituted.) Break apart the english muffins by hand into a medium sized bowl. Add the ham and asparagus; toss. Spread into the prepared dish. Whisk the milk, eggs, mustard and salt together and pour over bread mixture. Press the bread into the egg mixture with the back of a wooden spoon so that it soaks up the liquid. Sprinkle cheese on top. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 ° for 30-35 minutes, until set and browned around the edges. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

NIGHT IS PURER THAN DAY. IT IS BETTER FOR THINKING AND LOVING AND DREAMING. AT NIGHT, EVERYTHING IS MORE INTENSE; MORE TRUE. THE ECHO OF WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN SPOKEN DURING THE DAY TAKES ON A NEW AND DEEPER MEANING. ELIE WIESEL
