LA5772 Tech II: Green 4Th Street

Overall plan

This project was focused on a redesign of Southeast 4th street and Malcolm Ave SE with an emphasis on storm water capture and modeling using the mids calculator. as dinkytown is an infamous destination for action sports, a concave footprint this made for the ultimate water conveyance and skatepark. The design is set on a slope and water would be channeled into the new skateable swale. Along the sides of the skate-swale are planted green spaces that would help filter and catch trash and pollution before entering the stormwater systems under the street.

Grading plan

planting plan

Scherer Park concept design was focuses primarily with the regrading of the site and the planting of two specific areas. while sticking with a simple plant pallet, this allowed me to show the different levels of micro-topography in the raingarden design below. to the right I wanted to create a meandering band of grasses through groves of river birch trees which doubled as a space for hammocking. The incorporation of the island in the river was a part of the overall masterplan done by the city of Minneapolis.

direction of flow

This project was based on water in the west. in Las Vegas municipal water is one of the most regulated public services other than gambling. All of the water is channeled into what they call the “wash” which is their storm drain system. this system is a combination of bare earth wash and a concrete lined wash. Most of the time these channels are empty and unlively. My idea was to bring more attention to the wash with recreation and safety systems. safety was a concern due to the people who lived inside of the wash not knowing when there could be a flash flood. my soltion was to bring more eyes to the wash through recreation and a greater connection to the community and even tourists.

MLA Capstone: Nokomis Sustainable skatepark MLA Capstone 2020

Full site section + site plan

For my capstone I was workng closely with city of Skate on creating a concept design for a feasible project. The site that we narrowed down to was Nokomis Park near the lake and the community center. the focus of this project was to create a skatepark that was multi-functional in many different conditions and seasons. Breaking out of the basic boundaries of the traditional skatepark this design meanders through navigable paths creating new experiences every time. additionally this elongated skatepark will convey water into raingardens that are adjacent to the concrete paths.

Section and site plan

Skatepark hybrid rendering

this new kayak launch doubles as a flood gauge and would spill over into the bowls of the skatepark. The purpose of this is not to hold the flood but to collect any debris that comes floating along such as trash.

Metro blooms

At metro blooms I was tasked with many different responsibilities. As a landscape design assistant I was in charge of designs for neighborhoods I was assigned to. I designed over 50 raingardens and native plantings this season and helped with install with the Conservation Corps Crew as the crew leader.
