Magnificent Bird of Paradise field sketch done from a small hide at the display court, by Szabolcs K贸kay.
F ü ré s z - M a y e rn i k M e l i n d a : I am a primary teacher of Maths and English in Hungary. I’m interested in early language learning and raising bilingual kids. Before my daughter, Míra was born I had been teaching Maths and English in a primary school and privately, too. I guided English playgroups in my town to babies and mothers, toddlers and nursery and school children with lots of movements and fun. Now, my greatest „teaching” project is on raising my toddler bilingual (Hungarian and English). I would like to show parents how they can make English language learning fun for their children and how they can help them at school. I support the parents from home. Arbour Day is an annual event celebrated all over the world. In Hungary it is on May 10. The day focuses attention on the importance of nature conservation, protecting the environment , useful birds, trees and forest reserves.
The first event in Hungary was organized in 1902 by an ornithologist: István Chernel. We call this Birds and Trees' Day.

First I was only making black and white drawings, then started experiencing painting. I know you often travel. Where did you last go? Szabolcs: I’ve just arrived back from India on 2nd April. I spent 2 weeks in Ladakh. This was my 3rd trip there looking for Snow Leopards in the wild. These big cats are notoriously difficult to see, but in Ladakh’s Hemis National Park chances have
As this season we are watching the revival of nature, he is the most authentic to show us wildlife. How long have you been interested in wildlife, especially in birds? Szabolcs: I’ve been interested become quite good in recent years. On my first trip in 2009 I was lucky to have 1 encounter. Then I advertised the trip, and got some interest, so organized the 2nd in 2011. This time we had 2 sightings during the 10 days of the trip. This year I had a group of 5 Hungarians, and we were extremely lucky. This was the best of the 3 trips, and we were the luckiest group this year. We found a mother with 2 full grown, 3year-old cubs in the evenining of the 6th day. It was a distant sighting, from almost 2 kms, but the Leopards performed amazing behaviour, including playing and rolling in the
in nature since my early teenage years. I started watching birds more seriously and regularly around the age of 15-16.
When and how did you start photographing and painting animals? Szabolcs: I started photographing in the very first years of my interest in nature. Painting was a different story. I’ve always been drawing, but snow. But our luck didn’t stop here. The next morning they
were spotted on the hillside over our camp, so we had them in full view during the whole day, for 14 hours. I always prefer having firsthand experience for my paintings, but this was more than I have ever dreamed of. I took a lot of video footages and photos, but could even do some quick watercolour sketches of the resting animals. We also visited 2 other places after this experience, a high elevation lake at 4500 meters,
Tso-Kar, and an area for Asiatic Ibexes. At this latter place my big dream came true: I saw a Wolf.
expedition’s main goal was to collect Reptile and Amphibian species (6 new species were discovered).
Can you tell me something about your most interesting trip?
My task was simply to paint and photograph as much as I could. One of the bird groups I illustrated for the book were Birds of Paradise, the most fascinating birds of not only New Guinea, but the whole World. I decided to concentrate on this group, and managed to see and study 10 of the 40 species exsisting on the island. This trip was the most important study trip I’ve ever had in my life.
Szabolcs: My most interesting trip was in Papua New Guinea in spring 2014. I illustrated a book of the birds of New Guinea. After finishing the work, the author invited me to an expedition. It took 1 month, and we walked 94 kms on a tourist trail in the capital, Port Moresby area. The
What are you planning now? Szabolcs: I’m full of dreams, but have to be modest. Having a family means I cannot go away as much as I would like. I would really love to travel one year to Africa, painting the increadible wildlife of the continent. I also have an idea in my mind to produce a book solely on the Birds of Paradise. I would need at least another 2 study trips for this, hopefully I can do one of them next year. I would like to devote as much time as possible to produce Bird of Paradise paintings based on that 2014 trip, to have a sample collection for Watercolour landscape by Szabolcs Kókay

Lov_, History [n^ th_ P[th of your Soul Spring is the most romantic season, the time of LOVE! Whether you are young or old, single or married, spring makes your heart beat faster. This has always been so. What’s more, historians keep records of famous couples from Adam and Eve, through Count István Széchenyi and Crescence Seilern, to Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Can you imagine learning history by getting to know more about the lives of these and other couples? Would you understand and remember the facts and underlying motives much better if you knew about the feelings of people and the

hardships of the era? I’m sure you would – just as I see reasons and causes more clearly after reading the book about Love Tarot. What’s more, I could discover people and stories that are quite interesting and thoughtprovoking but not even barely referred to in history schoolbooks. Do you know for example the role Flóra Sass played in Hungarian science? Or what made Alexander the Great sad? I know the answers and you will also know them when you read Karina Hubert’s book. Fortune-telling and esoteric ideas do not belong to my areas of interest. Although this book is written as an interpretation of Tarot cards, I found it engaging. The reason for this is quite simple. It does not tell your future. It helps
you recognize signs, that are patterns in your life. Patterns, which stop you from improving or that can make you successful. It gives you advice and strength to be brave to step away from inhibitions and build your confidence. I specially enjoyed the part about the unluckiest cards. Not because I enjoy reading something negative. The other way round! This chapter shows you not only how to survive your most difficult life experiences, but also what to learn from them. If you read this book, you will enjoy love stories, learn history and also, perhaps most importantly, your soul can start to improve on an honest way. Th_ Et_rn[l Qu_stion... ...is: What can I cook on Sunday? Well, I will cook a rabbit a la ’What-have-I-got-in-thepantry’. I cook ’What-have-Igot-in-the-pantry’- food quite often, partly because I have not got any time to think about the Sunday-food – sometimes my neighbor, Marti asked this question in the Friday-market in Törökbálint, and if she gave an answer, I got an idea. On the other hand, I do not like fences around me, so I do not cook from cooking books. And I like trying my ideas. Usually they are lovely ones.

You need a big pan. Take the fat, the lard and the chopped onion into the pan, and cook them on saved flame, until the onion looks like glass. Take the rabbit, the cheese, the juniper,
salt, pepper and paprika into the pan, and then take the stuffed cucumber onto the meat. Pour the champagne and the water onto it. Mix all, cover the pan with a lid, and cook the food for about an hour and a half. You must guard the pan with a big wooden spoon, because your family will go around the oven. I cooked potatoes as garnish. I wish you a big, empty stomach for this delicious food! Recipe and photos on this page:
