Because Tourism is not a ready to wear costume but a hand made sewed costume, tailored differently for everybody. Because nature and people are the travel. That’s why we all have to join our efforts and co-operate to create a new initiative for the traveler-guest. The creation of a network between apartment, villas and small Hotels, but also restaurants, tourist offices offering alternative excursions and other similar businesses. This cooperation will create a new mode of tourism, where mass tourism will co exist with alternative forms of tourism to generate the tourism of personal experience. With this new model, the tourist will experience the family hospitality, he will taste Cretan Diet and he will discover the tradition and culture of Crete, while enjoying the sea and sun, which are the main characteristics of mass tourism. Crete is located in the most southern part of Greece and is the biggest Greek island with an approximate area of 8.330 square kilometers and 570.000 inhabitants. Crete is the island that separates the Aegean from the Libyan sea, and is the border between Europe and Africa. The island provides the hospitality and relaxation for those who need some time off the real world; an amazing place for partylovers with cosmopolitan night-life, but attracts also adventurers and sports activists; but also a business center which can host the most demanding International conferences and incentive trips.
Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Today the tourism infrastructure in Crete caters to all tastes. There is accommodation of every possible category, from large luxury hotels with all the facilities (swimming pools, sports and recreation, etc.), smaller family-owned apartments, to camping facilities. Visitors can reach the island via two international airports in Heraklion and Chania, through the smallest airport in Sitia, or by ship to ports of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Kissamos.

The climate of Crete is generally described as mild Mediterranean, differentiating itself with continental characteristics in the mountains. In general, a basic characteristic of the local climate are large deviations from place to place. The yearly temperatures fluctuate between 14 and 15 degrees Celsius, the mainland has generally warmer summers and colder winters, while the southern coasts are warmer both in winter and summer in relation to the northern coasts.
Crete has a privileged geographical position in the Mediterranean, which gives it a mild climate with mild changes of the weather. The winter, which usually starts in the middle of December, is mild.

the famous cretan hospitality
Cretans are world known for their hospitality and the way that treat guests. Since the first moment they make you feel most welcome by giving guests advises, directions, help and sharing even their goods with visitors. It is most common in a Cretan neighbor for locals to share fresh eggs, fruits, vegetables, homemade food, sweets etc.
locals hold this principle in the same way as the virtue and honor, thus combining ethical values that made both through friendship and through the family.
let your imagination run wild as you step foot on this legendary island. Most people visit the island for the natural surroundings, its history, great food and the renowned hospitality of its people. Cretan hospitality goes back to ancient Greek mythology and the god Zeus of Crete (Xenios). Zeus of Crete was the protector of visitors, who generously offered his hospitality to every stranger who wished to honour this sacred land.
Besides hospitality, two other principles dominate in the soul of each Cretan; virtue and honour, while in the hierarchy of ethical values the highest position is held by friendship, second only to family.
Cretan soul often reaches the point of exaggeration in their valour and passion for freedom, their courage, strength, love for country and nature even in their hospitality towards strangers.

cretan gastronomy
In recent years, the international scientific community has been increasing its efforts in the quest for the ideal diet in terms of health. Cretan diet lies at the centre of attention, as most studies present Cretan cuisine as the most typical example of high-quality Mediterranean cuisine. Cretans, admittedly, have the highest longevity rate in the world and the lowest mortality rate from conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
cheese holds a special place on the table. Herbs and plants picked from the island’s mountains add flavour to everyday food. As a rule, lunch or dinner is always accompanied with local wine and exceptionally tasty hand-kneaded bread. In general, one might describe Cretan cuisine as an imaginative, creative, and particularly aromatic proposition, based on simple seasonal ingredients, and the art that comes from the love for the land and the attachment to traditional cooking methods.
been grape syrup and thyme honey. Finally, when talking about Crete, we cannot leave out what Cretans themselves consider one of their greatest secrets for longevity and good health: Cretan tsikoudia , a strong spirit produced from the grape residue left from the winemaking process. Tsikoudia, accompanied by a tasty snack, as well as the sounds of lyre and lute, can calm any untamed Cretan soul!
but what is the secret of the Cretan diet? Crete has one of the oldest and most
The main features of the Cretan diet
When we refer to the Cretan diet of 1960 we should take into consideration that the diet in question was applied under specific social conditions and constituted an inextricable part of a general lifestyle. Apart from the specific choice of food, there were probably numerous other factors which contributed to the beneficiary effects of this diet to human health such as:
tasteful cuisines in the world. It is the continuation of traditional flavours, aromas, ingredients and styles dating all the way back to the Minoan times. Archaeological findings show that 4000 years ago ancient Cretans consumed more or less the same products as Cretans today. Many large urns used for storing oil, wine, cereals, legumes and honey were found in the Minoan palaces.
The recipe for longevity never tasted any better...
In the course of its long history, Crete’s gastronomy has been greatly influenced by the many people who tried at one point or another to conquer it. But if we examine this timeline more closely, we will find that Cretans had a way of filtering every dietary habit and adapting it to their standards, thus adding a special character to it. Century after century, the soul, the language and the cuisine of Cretans has remained unchanged! This continuity and the ability of the island to preserve its personal character, despite changes and adversities, formed a tradition which is now proven to be particularly valuable. Thus, the international scientific community not only speaks about Cretan cuisine, but also about the miracle of the Cretan diet! The Cretan cuisine is not considered rich in terms of variety of ingredients. It is a cuisine based on what the Cretan land has to offer. Focus is placed on the art of cooking and the processing of simple ingredients, rather than on using complex and rare combinations of expensive raw materials. The Cretan cuisine is different from other cuisines because it does not try to mix flavours, irrespective of the variety of the ingredients used for the everyday table. Each ingredient maintains its autonomy, its identity and its flavour. They all co-exist in harmony, highlighting this fine balance that defines the Cretan cuisine and the island in general. Cretans feed on the products of their land: plenty of fruit and vegetables, greens, and legumes. The use of meat is relatively limited in Crete, while
The Cretan diet is a way of life: plain, simple, with no redundant spices or taste boosters. But, at the same time, it is particularly scrumptious in a natural way, one might say. Simplicity brings forward the ingenuity of the hostess, who wields her age-old experience without strictly adhering to recommended doses. What counts the most in traditional Cretan cuisine is imagination. Cretans may eat greens or legumes every day, but they almost never eat the same food. The Cretan hostesses continuously invent new ways of bringing out the quality of ingredients through various simple and ingenuous combinations. A typical feature of the Cretan table is the variety of dishes, which combine with one another to form a tasteful entity. Besides, the main features of Cretan cuisine can be summarised as follows: the products used are strictly local and seasonal. Wild greens are eaten raw or boiled, either as the main cooking ingredient or as an accompanying dish or salad, sometimes used only to add flavour. Meat comes mainly from goats (usually free-range), poultry and pork. Spices are always present, but in a rather discreet way.
the olive oil is the base of the Cretan diet that can be served either cooked or raw with seasonal vegetables and wild herbs from the gardens. Dairy products are an important part of the Cretan diet. Fish and other seafood are considered wonderful dishes, while no other cuisine in the world places snails at such a high place. Legumes are consumed in large quantities, usually during fasting periods, while aromatic herbs are mainly used to make various beverages. The main sweeteners in Crete have always
Cretan diet as a lifestyle
Physical activity
One of these factors is physical activity, as in the study of Seven Countries it has been demonstrated that 62% of men from Crete underwent intense daily physical activity, whereas only 7% of them had a sedentary life or mild types of activity. Thus, the combination of Cretan diet with regular physical activity made the preservation of a healthy body weight possible.
Stability in the schedule of meals
But apart from exercise, another important parameter of the Cretan lifestyle -as well as that of other Mediterranean populations- has been the stability in the schedule of meals (Bellisle 2008). Steady meals at specific times of day appear to help the human organism to regulate the ingestion of food more effectively, in such a way that energy requirements are met, without, however, involving an over-consumption of food (Bellisle et al. 1997;de Castro 2007).
Meals, a chance for family gathering
Finally, it is significant that meals constituted an occasion for family gatherings, as well as for broader social interactions, and were regarded as a pleasant social experience (Bellisle 2008). This is particularly important if we take into account that nowadays a large percentage of people have lunch or dinner in front of the TV- a habit which is related to the over-consumption of food, not only in adults but also in children (Bellisle et al. 2004;Stroebele et al. 2004;Francis & Birch 2006;Wiecha et al. 2006). 10

The amazing tunes are a trademark for Crete; they remain alive and can be heard in village fêtes, traditional parties (glendia), and musical events among groups of friends, whereas masterly extracts from the Erotokritos epic poem by Vincenzo Cornaro and of course by the inexhaustible folk muse are sung at every opportunity. Folk art as well, with handicrafts and home-made goods, has utterly flourished in this land. The extensive wealth of woven items, embroidery, garments, jewellery, musical instruments and objects carved in wood, ceramics, folk painting, religious painting and other artefacts can be admired in the folk art museums of the towns and of many villages, whereas there are workshops and Greek art shops at the towns and villages where one can buy souvenirs and useful everyday items.

Even in our days, Cretans uphold an undeniable connection to their culture and traditions. According to experts, few are the places in the world where folk art remains so alive and is renewed and evolves so creatively as in Crete. Almost all of the island’s inhabitants can play musical instruments - the lyre, the lute, the mandolin, the guitar, the violin, which in the east Crete has a long tradition. In fact, over the last few years, there have been young musicians in Crete with an impeccable theoretical education and a deep knowledge of the local tradition but also of other music traditions, who make new music, renewing and giving new dimensions to the island’s musical tradition in a truly remarkable way. Wood carving The woodwork with a long tradition that matured during the Byzantine period, is to present important works, especially in carved furniture and utilitarian objects as well as small objects for ecclesiastic use. In carvings dominate the geometric shapes and decorative motifs enriched with subjects taken from the natural and the animal kingdom. Shepherds whiled away their limited free time using great sensitivity and skill to carve a wide variety of utensils. With the sole assistance of a razor-sharp Cretan knife, they made lavishly tooled flutes (thiambolia), lyres, distaffs, spindles, shuttles, thread spools, spoons, cups, plates and shepherd’s crooks. Geometrical designs were the most popular decorative mo-
tifs, though not employed to the exclusion of human figures, snakes, birds, lizards and even dragons. Embroidery Cretan embroidery is notable for its exquisite variety of patterns, symbolism and techniques. Depending on the technique employed, embroideries are classified as “drawn” (grafta), bearing patterns drawn free hand onto the fabric, “counted” (metrita-xombliasta), made by counting the threads in the fabric, and “poured” (chyta-xedifista). Many types of embroidery, such as hems, church decorations, pillows and valances are based on the Byzantine tradition, featuring decorative motifs with complex floral designs, mermaids, double-headed eagles, winged snakes, snakes, animals, birds and female figures at prayer. Others, most of which are 20th century framed embroideries or decorations, feature proverbs or figures drawn from history or mythology. Weaving Weaving is one of the oldest arts on the island. At work on the Cretan loom (the telaro or argastiri), women wove the family’s clothes and cloths for use in the home. Their raw materials were wool, flax, silk and cotton, which in many cases they themselves had produced, processed and dyed. Cretan weavings are characterised both by richness of colour and the arrangement of decorative designs into bands. The oldest and most common designs are geometrical, featuring variations and combinations of the rhombus as their basic motif. At the same time, common patterns involve more or less stylised floral and animal motifs, human figures and scenes inspired by history or religion. Pottery It is one of the oldest activities in Crete, whose roots are lost in the first Minoan period. the minoan craftsmen reach the peak of their art, creating stunning beauty and art pots, which depict with great vividness and artistic skill the animal and plant kingdoms of the island. in wake of this great pottery tradition, modern cretan potters create their own masterpieces. Even today, individual potters in various areas of Crete and especially in Thrapsano and Margarites, where there are numerous workshops, continue to evolve creatively long tradition of Cretan pottery. 12

Visit the mineral wealth of the land under a geologist’s guidance, and the communities that arise from it. Crete is a hidden treasure of geological wealth: a mosaic of characteristic features which make it unique and special throughout the Mediterranean. Its polymorphic relief has been formed when the bed of a huge sea, known as the Tethys Sea, was raised up as a result of the pressure of the tectonic plates which have been bringing Europe and Africa together for million years. Natural processes have shaped the mountain ranges about 23 million years ago in the area of Crete and made the first dry land: A never ending dry land which covered all the Aegean, joined with Europe and Asia and which was called Aegais. Discover the nappes which formed the island, under the guidance of a geologist who will introduce you into the mystery of geological creation through analyzing the relief. The island of Crete counts thousands of years of human presence and civilization. The historical monuments, archaeological sites and traces of centuries-old traditions in contemporary Cretan culture comprise the most precious treasure of the island.
exploring the cretan culture is like entering the labyrinth: you never know where the route will take you. getting lost in its paths, in search of adventure and myth, will definitely be a rewarding experience. THE MINOAN PERIOD In Crete flourished the first and most developed civilization of the Mediterranean sea, the Minoan civilization. It gained influences from the civilizations of the Eastern part of the Mediterranean sea and maintained important trade connections with them (Cyprus, Egypt and Middle East). During the period from 2000 to 1700 B.C, the first palaces were built in Knossos, Festos, Malia as a result of the fact that the wealthy families had the exclusive control of all the riches. After their destruction in 1700, the Minoan palaces were reconstructed with Knossos as administrative centre whereas the writing form of Linear A appeared, where numerous commercial and administration cases were registered. In 1450 all the centers of Minoan Crete were destroyed and the Acheans and the Mycenaean culture dominated, who along side with the local population will be enslaved to the Dorians in 1100. B. C. The Romans came to Crete as mediators and in the end they managed to conquer the island. Crete became a Roman province with Gortyna as its capital city. During the Roman occupation, which led to peace and to some form of independence, Crete experienced a period of prosperity. Many buildings, music schools, temples, stadiums and baths were built in numerous towns on the island. It was at that specific period that Crete came in contact with Christianity. Saint Paul converted Cretans to Christianity and his pupil, Titos, carried forward his work and preaching. THE BYZANTINE PERIOD (330 – 1204 A.C) From the middle of the 4th till the beginning of the 13th century, Crete was part of the Byzantine Empire. During that period, Christianity was spread and many churches were built on the island. THE ARAB PERIOD (824-961 A.C.) In the 9th century, the Arabs managed to conquer the island and used it as a base for their attacks against the other Aegean islands. The Arabs fortified the current city of Heraklion and changed its name into Chandax. After many years of inumerous efforts, Nikiforos Fokas , in 961 A.C, succeeded in setting Crete free from the Arab occupation. From that moment on the second Byzantine period started which lasted until 1204 A. C.
pation. It has been recorded as the longest occupation period of all times. The population became less, from 500.000 citizens before the Ottoman rule, down to 50.000. After a series of unsuccessful attempts of revolution, Crete passed to the hands of the Egyptians, offered to Mohamed Ali by the Sultan on January 22nd 1831. In 1869 the Great Forces forced Greece not to provide further help to the island. THE UNION WITH GREECE The Great Forces interfered in 1898 and Crete became independent under their guarantee in charge of Prince George as High Commissioner. A new government and a constitution were formed by Eleftherios Venizelos, Minister of Justice. Eleftherios Venizelos (Crete 1864- Paris 1931). One of the greatest Greek politicians of the 20th century. The Treat of Lausanne, in 1923, that determined the board line between Greece and Turkey and the mutual exchange of the population, changed the orientation of Greek politics and placed the foundations for a peaceful development. Eleftherios Venizelos, though, managed to organise and gain the support of important Cretans and thus a new revolution began in Therisso. In November 1905, an agreement to terminate the revolution was signed to Venizelos’ triumph. The official union of Crete with Greece took place on 1st December 1913. Since then, Crete and Hellas have faced together the consequences of the World War I & II and the national catastrophe in Asia Minor building their common history together.
THE VENETIAN RULE (1204 – 1669 A.C.) After the 4th Crusade and the Siege of Constantinople by the Franks in 1204, Byzantium assigned Crete to the Marquis Bonifatius the Momferaticus, who accordingly assigned Crete to the Venetians as part of an important exchange. The Venetian Rule lasted for 450 years. Crete was divided into feudals, that were distributed among the Venetian colonists. New walls were created around Chandax and the city is known now as Candia, after the Arabic name of the city. During that period, architecture, arts and classic studies bloomed under the influence of the Byzantine and the Venetian culture: the architecture of that period can be seen, even today, on most public buildings and private houses in the city of Heraklion.
Dominicos Theotokopoulos (Fodele, Heraklion 1541- Toledo, Spain 1614) Dominicos Theotokopoulos, known also as El Greco, marked the Renaissance period in Europe with his magnificent work, and exercised an important influence on the artistic production of future artists.

Vitsentzos Kormaros (1553- 1613) Vitsentzos Kormaros was born in Crete, when the island was under Venetian occupation. He is known to be the creator of “ Erotokritos”, a romantic poem of 10000 verses. The poem is famous for its perfect technique, the remarkable poetic feeling and for its brilliantly analyzed characters.

The land of Gorges Crete could be characterized as the land of Gorges. There are more than 250 small and long gorges on the island, more than the rest of Greece. Sfakia region, in the foothills of the alpine White Mountains have the most impressive gorges. The Samaria Gorge in Sfakia is the longest and most famous in Europe, while the less-known neighbouring gorges are really impressive with lush flora and very important fauna. Some of them are extremely dangerous to trek in and require guidance from an expert. The most important gorges in Chania, except Samaria, are Kallikratis, Imbros, Aradaina, Eligia, Klados, Tripiti, Agia Irini and Theriso. Smaller gorges are Asfendou, Sfakian Gorge, Prasse, Katholikos, Diktamos, Syrikario, Chalase, Deliano, Iliggas, Kapni and many more. Rethymno has smaller, easier accessible, but beautiful gorges. The most famous is the Kourtaliotikos Gorge, where the Big River flows and ends up in the Preveli palm forest. Other gorges are Kotsifos, Patsos, Arkadiotiko and Prassano. Heraklion prefecture has many gorges, with most of them running across the foot of Psiloritis Mountain of Asterousia Mountains. The area if Asterousia has some of the most amazing gorges in Greece, with the most important being Agiofarago and Martsalo. The Agios Nikolaos Gorge with the majestic Rouvas Forest is the most beautiful gorge in Heraklion prefecture. Some other gorges are Almiros and Karteros, near Heraklion, Astrakiano, Arvi, Kounaviano, Askiano, Knossano and Astritsi.
Crete’s Flora The natural beauties of Crete, the “fair wooded island” as it was called by Homer in the Odyssey, Crete the “windyo” isle, have been sung since antiquity. Herodotus speaks of an island covered with shade trees; it is no coincidence that the name of the central mountains of Crete, Ida, derives from the Doric idha = forest. The forests in fact covered almost the entire territory of the island and supplied precious material as early as the Minoan period for construction of palaces, and under Venetian rule, for ships and fortifications. Forest fires, grazing, and indiscriminate use of the land by man have nevertheless greatly reduced the forested acreage over the centuries. Unfortunately, however, the sheep and above all the goats destroy many of the plants, so that in the end the typical vegetation of the island is represented mainly by garrigue and phrygana formations characterized by spiny, highly aromatic graze-resistant plants. The other element that has modified the natural landscape is the extensive urbanization that has taken place on the island mainly in response to the tourist demand. Nevertheless, Crete still possesses an unquestionable charm, not only thanks to its architectural treasures, the authentic hospitality of its people, and the renowned vacation spots, but also to its natural beauty. The tourist whose curiosity is aroused by the rich plant life of the island is never disappointed. Above all in the spring the visitor to Crete can admire many dif-
natural beauty ferent and some very particular plants in full bloom as he travels to beaches, gorges, mountains, and the archaeological sites and castle ruins. The vastly assorted flora of Crete counts more than 1800 species with distributions from the beaches to the highest mountains. There are numerous endemics (about 10% of the total), the majority of which are found in the gorges and in the high mountains; that is, in the most inaccessible environments and therefore those richest in ‘natural’ vegetation. Most of the endemics are ancient species that were once widely distributed over the island and which, isolated by the various inundations of the Mediterranean, succeeded in surviving while their congeners disappeared: emblematic in this sense is the case of Petromarula pinnata, a monospecific genus endemic to Crete.
Crete’s Fauna We know the prehistoric fauna of Crete included animals that are now extinct, such as a dwarf elephant without tusks, a dwarf hippopotamus the size of a pig as well as a kind of deer. These had probably all disappeared by the time the first humans settled the island, or possibly soon after. It is also virtually certain that there were wild boar on Crete, if one can judge from the many Minoan helmets made out of boars’ teeth. But whether they were native to the island or had been introduced by the Minoans is unknown. Crete’s geographical isolation led to the evolution of local species of flora and fauna which are endemic to the island.
the kri-kri, the most important mammal is the cretan wild goat (capra aegagrus-cretica) which lives in the white mountains and the samaria gorge as well as on uninhabited rocky islets of the area such as dia, aghioi pantes and thodoros. more commonly the male is called “agrimi” and the female “sanada”. In Samaria National Park the goats are slowly increasing in population. They are difficult for the visitors to see as they are shy and fast-footed; they climb in the highest, steepest mountain terrain and keep out of people’s way. Next to these a native cat species “fourokatos” (Felix silvestris-agrius), a kind of marten and a badger still live here. A few years ago the Cretan Wild Cat was considered a “ghost animal”. The legend took flesh and
blood when it was first captured in 1996 giving a new perspective to the origins of the Cretan fauna. Scientists are now testing whether the wild cat existed on Crete prior to its separation from the mainland, or was brought for domestication by the first settlers, but later it ran wild again. Other interesting mammals on the island are the Cretan Shrew (Crocidura zimmermanni), the Cretan Spiny Mouse (Acomys minous), the Cretan marten (Martes foina-bunites) and the Cretan badger (Melesmeles-arcalus). A great way to experience the full range of Crete flora and fauna is by walking the famous E4 European Walking Path (or maybe just part of it as it is 320km). From Kastelli in the west of Crete it begins and crosses along the whole island reaching Zakros in the east where it ends. The E4 path covers the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), Mount Psiloritis (Mount Ida) and the mountain Dikti.
Marine life In the seas around Crete - the Mediterranean, Aegean, Ionian and Libyan, all teem with a wide array of marine life. If you take a scuba diving holiday on Crete you can discover groupers, octopus, moray eels, salemas, banded bream, stingrays, sea rabbits, red and black scorpion fish, schools of barracudas and sea horses. Sponges, seashells and a variety of sea anemones can also be found. The Mediterranean is home to many of Cretan nature. Minoan frescoes at Knossos depict dolphins (delfinia) and have a long association with Crete. It is possible on the south coast of Crete, from Paleohora, to take Dolphin spotting trips. Occasional sightings of whales have also been reported around this area of the Libyan sea, and whale watching tours are possible. On certain beaches on Crete you can see the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (caretta caretta). The sea turtle, their nests, eggs and hatchlings are protected by Greek and International law so great care should be taken during its reproduction period. The Caretta-Caretta is the only species of Mediterranean sea-turtles which nests in Greece. Sea turtles are reputed to be strongly philopatric, and always return to the same beach they were born on to lay their eggs. Nesting beaches in Greece are located in Zakynthos, Peloponnese and Crete. In Crete the highest nesting densities were found in Rethymnon, Chania and Messara Bay. The Caretta-Caretta is an endangered species and it needs the help of us all. Leatherback turtles (dermochelys coriacea), Green turtles (chelonia mydas) and the Mediterranean Monk Seal (monachusmonachus) are also critically endangered species found in Crete. The Monachus-Monachus (Mediterranean Monk Seal) is one of the world’s most endangered mammals and one of 3 species of Monk Seal. It once swarmed through the Mediterranean and adjoining Atlantic while the other 2 species were common in the Pacific and Caribbean. These represent the only genus of seal found in tropical seas. 18

Lygaria is located 21km north west of Heraklion and 1km east of Agia Pelagia. The Bay of Ligaria is closed and well protected from the winds blowing in the region. Nearby there are the ruins of the old monastery of Panagia Ligariani, where many monks lived in the past. The region gets its name from the monastery, which in turn gets its name from the beautiful plant “osier” (ligaria in Greek), with the flexible stems and the beautiful flowers, which used to abound in the area.

archanes Archanes is so close to Heraklion in time and in distance, so much a pleasure too. You pass through Kato Archanes and climb a short distance to the main (Epano) Archanes village. The large village (and a large agricultural centre as well) has little in the way of places to stay, but has been restored and beautified with European Union funds, as well as private initiative. A truly remarkable job has been done here, the place looks great but retains as much atmosphere and as many original features as possible, it is a model for such projects in our opinion. The mayor of ten years, is one of the most active, to the
visible benefit of the place, in creating and encouraging the establishment of museum, arts, special and cultural events - general civic quality, most refreshing. The village people are proud of their successful efforts to keep the village alive, clean, traditional and beautiful. They are also genuinely friendly. Archanes has won awards - 2nd best restored village in Europe and 1st in long term development prospects. Streets have been newly stone-paved, there are more splendid displays of blooming flowers, fruit trees and plants in the yards, terraces and balconies of the houses - a walk around the back streets is a pleasure as a result.

episkopi
The village of Episkopi is located 18 kilometers southeast of Heraklion from an exit at the 8th kilometer of the National Road Iraklion - Agios Nikolaos. The village offers something different than the hectic pace that usually offer the tourist resorts. Inside the village there are the Byzantine churches of Archangel Michael, St. Paraskevi and St Ioannis with frescoes. Particularly in St Ioannis are very well positioned murals among which stands out the one of Christ ascending to heaven. On November there is a public holiday for the celebration of St.Minas, the patron saint of Episkopi, a very popular event for the visitors. Visit the Battle of Crete and Ethnology Museum where the view of the exhibits bring to life memories of heroism and selflessness. There you will find Captain Michael Argyrakis, founder and owner of the museum. You can walk through the Municipal Park “G. Panayiotakis” a modern leisure proposal, a real green oasis.
The area of Episkopi has been inhabited since the Minoan period. Antiquities from the Middle Minoan period to the Ottoman era were spotted. In Episkopi there are also Venetian monuments like the “Tower” and vaulted tank from the Byzantine period. During the revolution of 1897, in the battle that took place in Episkopi the Leader Antonis Trifopoulos (or Trifitsos) was killed on 25th June and the whole island of Crete lamented his glorious death.

Gournes - Gouves - kokkini chani Gournes is 15 kilometres east of Heraklion. It is part of the largest coastal tourist area in Crete, running from Kokkini Hani to Malia. Gournes is between Kokkini Hani and Gouves, which are both within walking distance along the beach. The name Gournes comes from “gourna” meaning “basin”, and it is thought that there were many watering-places in the area at one time. The evidence still exists, as a “river” basin still runs through the centre of town. In the summer months, however, it is quite dry, but in the winter rainy season, and during the spring thaw, water rushes through here from the surrounding mountains to the sea below. Gournes was a small, sleepy village until the late fifties, when the big American Air Force communications (no planes) base opened, occupying a substantial portion of the town property. While the base population eventually grew to about 3,500 servicemen and their families, the surrounding area kept pace. Many of the first hotels and apartments were built in Gournes to accommodate the families of the servicemen and visitors to the base and its civilian work force. When the Gournes base closed in 1993, the area was a bit shell-shocked, as about 1,000 locals became unemployed and hundreds of apartments and rooms were vacated. Since then, Gournes has fought its way back economically, making a good name for itself as a quiet holiday destination, as well as a place where many people from Heraklion maintain their summer homes. The enormous base property with a frontage of 500 meters along the main road is finally showing signs of a new life. After lying dormant for many years, there is now a school, a gymnasium, a municipal town hall services and an exhibition centre, plus and the Crete Aquarium “Thalassokosmos” (Sea World), the largest
aquarium in southern Europe. Gournes has a regular bus service both east and west, for easy access to Heraklion or Hersonissos, as well as many other points along the coast. Along the beach-front promenade you’ll find several small, but sandy beaches, most with chairs and umbrellas – and some with handy “beach service” for drinks and snacks from the restaurants across the road. However, the best beach in Gournes is at the far western end of the promenade – the large beach in front of the Hotel Xenia, which is maintained as a working hotel school. This beach is wide, with smooth sand, offers chairs and umbrellas and, in addition, is life-guard protected. If you continue to the east, past the small fishing harbour of Gouves, you will enter the area of the former American Base. All along the coast there are several spots where you can go swimming. At the east end of this area, there is the excellent Municipal beach of Gouves, which offers the cheapest sunbeds and umbrellas in the area. Visit the site of the former American Base. Here you will find beaches without umbrellas for a peaceful swim, The old village of Gournes is a short, uphill walk to the right, from the old road. There are many old village houses, plus some newer homes, side by side, and a nice village church. However, there are no facilities, not even a coffee shop, so bring your own bottle of water if you take the trek. In the valley of Gournes there is the beautiful old chapel of St. John Bezetis, with many well-preserved frescoes. Gouves and Kato Gouves. Gouves proper (Ano Gouves) is a small picturesque village located about 20 km east of Heraklion, in an altitude of 300 m next to the small mountain of Ederi. Goúves proper
is often confused with its busy summer resort, Kato Goúves. Besides this well-developed tourist resort with long sandy beaches, the area has some traditional villages and archaeological sites. Kato Gouves, just a couple km north of the village, with its long sandy beach, is the summer resort. There is a variety of accommodation, from large hotels to boarding houses and self-catering apartments, and there are many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops. There are also remains of an ancient Minoan ceramics workshop which is worth seeing, as well as the Christian remains, like the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, patron of the village, the Eileithyia caves. Within a short distance are picturesque villages and sights, such as the monastery of Saint John “Theologos”, the Skotino cave and Eileithyia cave. The most important archeological sites of the area are the Minoan villas of Kokkíni Háni and Amnísos. The access from Heraklion to Gouves is very easy due to regular and frequent bus itineraries, taxies or rented cars and motorcycles. Kokkini Hani is a coastal village located at the 14th kilometer of the main road to Lasithi, near the Vathianos Campos. Kokkini Hani became known in the early 20th century, when the first buildings were constructed together with an inn for passing people and animals, kept by a person named Kokkinis. The area is developed with hotels and seaside taverns, restaurants, cafes and bars as well as clubs with live Cretan music. There are regular bus services to and from Hersonissos, east and west of Heraklion. There is also a bus to visit the neighboring villages. On the main road taxi ranks are always available.

hersonissos - piskopiano - anissaras Limin Hersonissou Colours, light, sea, luxury, quality and hospitality. Limin Hersonissos, that famous resort of Crete of unrivalled beauty could be defined by the above words. That cosmopolitan destination a diamond, lying on the coasts of Cretan sea. Limin Hersonissou is an Eden with thousands of secrets waiting for the visitor to discover; a place blessed by the nature, combining the social life in lush hotels, amazing clubs, modern shops and the escape to clean beaches. The visitors, who have the opportunity to be at the crowded port, cannot possibly make their mind before such a great variety of entertainment or excursion programs offered. The inhabitants themselves, who know how to offer special moments and original experiences to their guests, lend a very special color to that place. The region of Hersonissos, as established by the remnants of a Minoan town in the West of Hersonissos, has been inhabited already from the Minoan times. Later, it used to be the port of the ancient town Lyttos. During the Roman and first Byzantine period, the place experienced a tremendous bloom, as an important town. This emerges from the significant finds brought to light by excavations. The roman aqueduct, the roman port and the theatre are amongst them. By reviewing the past, endless memories awake. However, Hersonissos, which is now a developed, contemporary town – longs for the past. The modern town is built on the western edge of the bay of Malia. It is the administrative center of the new municipality and of several administrative services. The Court of Justice, the Mortgage Register Office, the Cottage Hospital, the Police Station, the Price Control Office, the Port Authorities, the Medical Centre, the Inland Revenue Office, as well as services of the broader public sector, such as the Public Power Corporation, the Greek Telecomm, the Post Office, the Social Security Institution and the Banks are at the
port. Nowadays, the port is considered one of the most impressive, romantic destinations of the Aegean for the foreign visitors. Here, the blue of the sea and the sky is absolutely harmonized with the white of houses and modern hotel complexes, spreading along the two opposing, leeward coves. The view of the town from the neighbouring, elevation fascinates, due to sunbathed landscape with the play of light and shadows during daytime, or due to the night lights. The hustle and bustle in the area is incredible, as if that town never sleeps; it is the meeting point for hundreds of visitors expecting to spend their holidays in this beautiful town and experience real entertainment!! Big and small hotels, as well as other hospitable accommodations spread all over the town, waiting to welcome their guests. Numerous shops offer quality products, satisfying every wish. The tasteful commercial and luxury tourist shops, will give you a chance to buy quality decorative items, souvenirs or clothes at favorable prices. In the restaurants and taverns, the visitor has the opportunity to try the famous Greek delicacies and all the authentic, local tastes, as well as international cuisine. One could equally enjoy refreshing drinks, coffee, spirits or cocktails in the cafeterias and order Greek coffee in the traditional cafes. For all those, who wish to feel the intensity and the rhythm of such a lively place away from pestiferous thoughts of the daily routine, night clubs offer that possibility. Hersonissos belongs to people who love action, motion and life. Besides, there is great activity in Hersonissos, related to the organization of cultural events such as exhibitions of popular art and traditional celebrations. During the Easter celebration, some old customs are still preserved until nowadays, including the burning of Judas’s effigy in the night of Holly Saturday and the festivities that take place of Kastri, a northern suburb of the town. The Museum of Local Tradition, Lychnostatis, is a center of
various important events. It is a real repository of historical facts, as it preserves the old traditional way of life on the island. Limin Hersonissos, a town that always stays young and alive. Piskopiano Village. Tiered into the slopes of the Harakas mountain, Piskopiano is one of the oldest villages in this region of Crete. So old in fact, it’s got basilica ruins dating back to the 6th century. It sits halfway between the hillside village of Koutouloufari and the seaside town of Hersonissos. And in staying true to its historic roots it’s kept things about as traditionally Greek as you can get. Whitewashed walls, sky-blue shutters and wrought-iron balconies sit hipto-hip along slender climbing streets. But it doesn’t stop there. Its 16th-century church of Aghios Ioannis and the Museum of Rural Life provide injections of culture, while rickety blue tables and chairs prop up against whitewashed houses, and views coast down over terracotta rooftops to the sea. Anissaras. The village Anissaras stretches out modern and colourful, showing the highest tourist development in Hersonissos. Previously an old land belonging to the village of Hersonissos, it showed a rapid growth during the last fifteen years due to its favourable location. Anissaras is a coastal tourist resort, where are many hotel clusters of perfect infrastructure. For another year, Anissaras is offering the best of it as far as entertainment, fun, and pleasant accommodation of its visitors’ are concerned. Hospitality is the main feature of the inhabitants, who will welcome you making you feel at home. What will certainly amaze you in Anissaras are the perfectly organized, beautiful beaches (awarded the Blue Flag of Europe). There, you have the opportunity to enjoy the golden sun and the majestic blue of the sea.

kamilari - lentas - sivas Kamilari Today Kamilari still offers traditional Cretan village life and very spectacular views. Kamilari may not be directly on the sea, but it’s only a short distance from many beautiful local beaches. This minor disadvantage is more than made up for by the strongly traditional atmosphere of the village, with its pretty houses, picturesque alleyways and stunning views. In the narrow streets and alleyways of this old village you will find a real part of old Crete: two small main squares, three churches and three colorful kafeneios full of character, frequented by locals and visitors alike. The old houses of Kamilari are built of stone, with lovely courtyards and bougainvilleas climbing the walls. Some of the houses you see have been restored by foreign owners, who use them as summer homes or rent them out to tourists. Kamilari preserves its traditional atmosphere, making it a lovely place to stay, stroll around and explore. Lentas South of Crete is known for its mild Mediterranean climate. In Lentas you can swim in the spring with water temperatures around 20 degrees and during the day it is warm. The summer is hot and sometimes subtropical temperatures can be reached. The days in October are shorter, but remain sunny and warm. Now the evenings become cooler and the first rain showers bring welcome relief after the long summer. By early November , you can swim in a magnificent ficent sea. Not only in the summer the well known wind “ Meltemi”
occurs, but all-the-year very strong winds should be expected. Sivas The village of SIVAS lies 62 km away from Iraklion , on the western slope of Asterousia Mountains. at an altitude of 110 m Its 1000 years history comes to life for the visitor, who has the chance to admire its monuments, and old houses, perfectly preserved through the centuries. That is the reason why Sivas has been characterized by the Ministry of Culture as a traditional and protected village. Its inhabitants , about 600 people, many of them from other countries recently relocated here, feel proud for their village, and do their best to protect its beauty and traditional character. Sivas is the birth place of various historical figures, that played important roles to the history of the island. These included Ai Kir-Giannis o Xenos, who helped reorganize the Christians after Nikiforos Fokas captured Crete from the Arabs, Ioannis Skoutis (Stefanakis) who fought during the Greek revolution against the Turks in 1821, and the writer Themos Kornaros. In the village square , you can sit and enjoy your coffee in the traditional coffee shop, while children can play in the playground next to the school. You can also visit the church of Agios Ioannis in the same square. There are quite few rooms for rent in the village and tavernas serving traditional Cretan dishes. There is also a ceramics workshop.

lyttos
According to the historian Polybius, Lyttos or Lyktos, is one of the oldest cities in Crete, famous in ancient times for the excellency of its men. The site is to the NE of present day Lyttos, also known as Xidas. At 656 m above sea level, among the ancient ruins, two churches have been built, that of Timios Stavros and that of Aghios Giorgos. According to Stefanos Byzantios, Lyttos owes its name to its location on the western foothills of the Lassithi mountains. Hesiod mentions Lyttos in his Theogonia as a rich city in Crete, and Homer qualifies her as ‘well-built’. Skylax and Strabo make references to Lyttos, and Hierocles mentions the city in his Political Geography.

The Lyttos village is appropriate for biking (bikes and equipment can be found in our villas), rock climbing, hiking as well as to explore the caves and the rich subsoil, couldn’t be missing from the scene of wild and tame nature! malia Malia is located 37 kilometers east of Heraklion, on the way to Agios Nikolaos. The main road seems to divide the town in two, the old Malia at the foothill of Mount Selena and the newer part towards the shoreline. Malia is an unusual small town, unlike any other in Crete. It used to be known for its delicious potatoes. But times changed, the tourists started coming to Crete and the potato fields of Malia were replaced by hotels large and small, tavernas and bars. To visit the Malia archaeological site, leave the town heading towards Agios Nikolaos. About 2-3 kilometres from Malia, turn left. The road leading to the Palace of Malia continues down to the sea and the beach. Bear the beach in mind if you get a bit hot touring the archaeological site and want a swim to cool off. You can then continue along the same road back into Malia. Practical information about Malia In Malia you will find many hotels both large and small, with stars or not. You will also find many apartments and studios for rent, both in coastal Malia and in the narrow streets of the old town. There are tavernas and restaurants on every corner of every street, of all types and prices for every taste. There are also lots of car rental places in Malia. As Malia is very popular with young tourists in search of the three “S’s” (sun, sea and sex), there are also many bureaux
renting motorbikes and quadbikes. As for bars, clubs and cafes, the place is full of them. There are even more on the beach road from Malia to Stalis, in Stalis itself and of course in Hersonissos, 8 kilometres to the west. Most cashpoint machines (ATM) are located in the newer part of Malia. Make sure you have got money before the weekend, because the machines are not always refilled then. Most of the banks and the post office are situated on the main road. There are two bigger supermarkets, one on the Malia Beach Road and the other one behind the church of Agios Nektarios. Mini markets are situated everywhere in and around Malia. Public transport is very good in general. A bus service takes you from and to the archeological site of Malia, passing along the beaches of Malia (east) and Stalis (west). Other bus services run along the main street of Malia in both directions. Bus stops are marked with a blue sign, under which timetables are posted.

stalis Situated in one of the most beautiful areas with its sandy beaches on the north coast, Malia and Stalida offers the ideal starting point by its central geographical location (30km to the airport and the capitol of the island, Heraklion), to discover the whole island. Stalida offers a wide range of accommodations in all kind of categories. From simple accommodation up to luxurious hotel suites there surely can be found something in all price categories. Most accommodations and bigger resorts are nearby the beach. Many of them provide own pools and partly offer entertainment programs and sport facilities. But also on the hill opposite the sea, different kinds of accommodations from pension to apartment resorts can be found. From here there is a splendid panoramic view over the whole bay. The mostly “free view“, no matter from which resort you enjoy it, is guaranteed by the local building regulation which is not permitting to spoil landscape by
multi-storey, skyscraper like concrete buildings. In any case it is worth paying attention to the garden architecture of most resorts. Food and Drink in Stalida Many nutrition experts praise the “Cretan cuisine” (Cretan-Diet, a standard concept in professional circles) and you definitely should not miss it. In the numerous taverns and restaurants offering national and international cuisine you surely will find dishes for everyone’s taste. Typical for this region are, according to the season, the different vegetables. Lamb meat, whether in the oven or grilled, could melt in one’s mouth. Did you ever try goat meat? - Pastry filled with cheese or spinach, not to mention the variety of delicious fresh fruit. Have a good glass of Cretan wine (produced in many areas on Crete), enjoy the sunset at the seaside and let dangle your soul.

Stalis is one of the most popular holiday resorts on Crete. It is strategically placed between the two resorts of Malia and Hersonissos beside the north coast highway, 30 km east from the Iraklion airport. In Stalis there is a beautiful beach of fine yellow sand. Despite a cooling onshore breeze the Cretan sun’s still hard at work, and the combination of sun and wind makes it easy to acquire a deep golden tan. Stalis is not very hectic at the day time but it livens up at night. Stalis has a good selection of nice bars and good restaurants. There are local transport buses going to Iraklion (30 km) and Agios Nikolaos (28 km). It’s a very good choice if you want to have the nightlife on your doorstep, but prefer somewhere a little bit quieter as your base!

tsoutsouras - kastri - psari forada Tsoutsouras Located 65 km from Iraklion, on the south coast of Crete is the small village of Tsoutsouros built next to the ruins of the ancient city of Inatos. Mainly a fishing/ farming community of about 100 permanent residents, is becoming a popular base of operations for visitors who prefer a less intense style of vacations, than that offered by big towns and popular resorts. Tsoutsouros is the haven in the municipality of Arkalohori to the south of Heraklion. An unexpectedly picturesque and exquisite place with sparklingly clean sea, enriched with salt and ozone. The climate is wonderful as it has not a spell of moisture and that dryness contributes to the cure of breathing problems. Regarding the inhabitants, they are really friendly, kindhearted, polite and willing to offer hospitality to any guest that decides to visit their village. There are many small cafes and tavernas all with wonderful patios where in the cool shade of the trees the visitors can enjoy the famous fresh fish of Tsoutsouros. There are quite few rooms and apartments available in a couple of small, family owned, hotels in Tsoutsouros. Most of them are newly built with bathroom and kitchen facilities and since some of them belong to permanent residents they operate all year around. Beach facilities like sunchairs and umbrellas or sea sports are not yet provided but you will find showers to wash out the salt. A harbour - rather a fishing boats refuge - is now under construction and will be ready in a one or two years. Facilities to yachts will be then provided, such as mooring, refueling, water etc.
Psari Forada Sidonia (or Syndonia or Kato Psari) is located 89km southeast of Heraklion, inside a large valley, 9km east of Viannos and 1km south of the village Psari Forada. This is also called Psari Forada, after the nearby village. It is believed to be situated on the site of the ancient town of Sidonia. It was originally the seaside village of fishermen and farmers coming from the village Kalami, situated 9km northern. Psari Forada and Sidonia are hidden in the hug of a deep valley that runs with a small stream. The area has warm climate, which favors the cultivation of olive trees, subtropical fruits such as bananas, or early outdoor vegetables. The area of Psari Forada has experienced a mild tourist development in recent years and now is a traditional tranquil place, perfect for quiet holidays at a very leisurely pace. The beach stretches from Cape Theophilos (East) to the West, till Sendona hill. It’s a lovely shore with dark gray coarse sand and with clear calm waters.
