Sci-Arc Projects Rebuild: L.A. Memorial Coliseum
01
Rebuild: L.A. Memorial Coliseum 3A Studio, Sci-Arc Fall 2011, Instructor: Gregory Walsh, Partner: Billy Diep The project concerns the upgrading of the LA Memorial Coliseum for continued use as a venue for major athletic events as well as proposing additional uses for the site in order to increase both the frequency of stadium events and to intensify the daily use of Exposition Park. Opened in 1923, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the great athletic venues in the United States. Host to two Olympiad and countless major events, its peristyle end and torch are icons of Los Angeles. Over the years, Exposition Park and the LA Coliseum have undergone a number of transformations that have led to its current state of under use and decay. The park will soon be served by newsubway transit line that will open in 2012 on Exposition Boulevard and the California Science Center was awarded a space shuttle, requiring new facilities. With the proposed transfer of management to from the Coliseum Commission to the University of Southern California, there is a tremendous opportunity to transform the LA Memorial Coliseum into a state-of-the-art athletic facility for the 21st century, establish a mix-use strategy and contribute to the overall revitalization of Exposition Park.
m
Site The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a large outdoor sports stadium in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, at Exposition Park, a 160 acre tract directly south of U.S.C. and it is bounded by Exposition blvd. to the north, Figueroa St. on the east, Martin Luther King Blvd. to the south, and Vermont Ave. to the west. Along with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the specific 3A focus this semester, the park contain museums, dierent sports venues, and diverse other facilities. The stadium is home to the Pacific-12 Conference’s University of Southern California Trojans football team. The stadium is jointly owned by the State of California, Los Angeles County, and the City of Los Angeles; it is currently managed by the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission. The Coliseum is the only stadium to have hosted the Olympic Games twice, in 1932 and 1984. It is also the only Olympic stadium to have hosted Supper Bowls and World Series. It was declared a National Historic Landmark on July 27, 1984.

Concourse Plan
Concept L.A. Memorial Coliseum, due to its limited amount of events, does not generate more than enough income to sustain itself. Therefore, the project aims to rebuild the existing Coliseum in order to substantially increase the activities to the site, so that it will bring more revenues, and also create a canopy structure for the spectators. The main idea is to activate the spaces in the stadium by relocating the football field and allowing for new programs such as the indoor amphitheater and restaurant towards the peristyle area. This arrangement creates the opportunity for simultaneous activities to happen. The design of the canopy structure and the programs around the football field are treated as an individual unit that combines together into a larger whole. The core of the canopy structure supports the seatings, various sizes of VIP rooms located on dierent levels, while also acting as a vertical circulation that connects all of these programs. 9

Bird eye’s view looking into stadium interior
Canopy Structure The existing Coliseum doesn’t have any shading structure to shade for the event during the day which poses a huge problem for the spectators. However, due to the historical value of the site, the addition of the canopy has to avoid touching the existing facade of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The design of the canopy follows the geometry of the existing Coliseum facade which causes the form of the canopy to be more modulated. The modular aspect of the canopy structure drives the idea of individual unit to merge as a whole through the structure and programmatic interaction within the stadium.

The canopy hovering above transforms it’s shape based on the program of the stadium. It is more regular towards the seating area for the football event, while changes its profile towards the entry area in order to accommodate shading for indoor amphitheater and restaurant. The canopy also allows for ventilation by venting out the hot air and achieves cooling in the stadium. In addition, indirect sunlight can penetrate into the stadium with this type of canopy system.

City Aperture 3B Studio, Sci-Arc Spring 2012, Instructor: Russell Thomsen, Partner: Jie Yang In the second semester of the third year in the undergraduate school the students are asked to produce a ‘comprehensive’ design that deals with the interrelationship of building systems. They are required to articulate a projects performance structurally, thermally, acoustically and environmentally. Beyond competent articulation of systemic relationships we will ask that the students mine these systems for spatial and organizational potential. Issues of embedding, figuration, mass and interstice, solid and void as well as contemporary notions of pochĂŠ incarnated by double skins and thick membranes are all within the family of formal problems related to systemic challenges that the studio will be exploring. The course objectives is to allow student to achieve Comprehensive Design, Critical Thinking Skills, Design Skills, Sustainability, Research Skills, Use of Precedents, Graphic Skills, and Accessibility.
211
Site The studio project is to be located on the site of the recently completed New Museum (by SANAA) in New York. The New Museum is located on the Bowery at a pivotal geographic and cultural intersection where generations of artists have lived, worked, and contributed to the ongoing cultural dialogue of the nation. In 1960 SoHo was a derelict brownfield site, but now it is a vibrant New York district. This paper examines how the renewal occurred so rapidly and completely. The dramatic revival has resulted in a high density environment which provides the mix of uses usually associated with urban villages. High density and mixed uses have been bound together and sustained by the catalyst of myth making. These three terms, mixed use, density, and myth are first defined and their interaction over the last 200 years is plotted to demonstrate how these qualities provide a successful urban environment. This historical overview also shows how SoHo became a primary example of local residents overcoming city planners and how it is the first time that artists acted as urban pioneers.

Dynamic Architecture System: City Aperture\ Site\
Concept New York City is a remarkably dynamic and dense city, which embedded rich culture. Enormous amount of high skyscraper have been risen from the ground. Museum is a culture reinforcer to the city, bringing people some spirit food. To merge the museum with the city context, three “windows,” facing different direction of the city, are created in different height to accommodate the city view. As visitors walks along the museum, the three “windows,” the galleries, are experienced in sequence -- from eye level to aerial level. In this way, the art and the gallery are perfectly merged. The lowest “window” is facing the Prince Street, which is on the west; the middle “window” is facing Upper Manhattan, which is on the north; the highest “window” is facing Lower Manhattan, which is on the south.
Create 3 boxes (galleries) in the bounding box on the site.
Extrude the 3 boxes to south, north, west from the highest window to the lowest.

Solar Decathlon 2013 Vertical Studio+Caltech, Sci-Arc Summer 2012, Instructor: Wes Jones Team member: Jason Velazquez, Zhang Xiao, Feng Chu Chen, Kristy Velasco, Aladdin Mogeem This is a three part studio. In committing its resources to the Solar Decathlon endeavor SCI-Arc has two goals. First, to win the competition on the terms set by the sponsors, but then also to contribute to a larger vision of sustainable design, by discovering other ways to be environmentally responsible, beyond those already established as green orthodoxy. So, on the one hand, the studio works towards mastering the general knowledge, intellectual and manual skills, and technical expertise embodies in the ten oďŹƒcial contests. On the other hand, SCI-Arc will leverage its own unique perspective to explore the larger picture and what strategies and tactics might reside outside the carefully delimited boundaries of the competition.

Concept The design emphasized on celebrating the active California lifestyle through dynamicity. DALE short for Dynamic Augmented Living Environment consist of two prefabricated modules.
When enclosed, the walls provided privacy for the users as a typical residence, allow users to fully enchance the building as a whole.
The module will slide open to bring the outdoors inside, and the indoors outside, allowing man to interact in nature with ease. Upon sliding, the programs are activated in relation to the various landscapes. This flexibility will produce many configurations and gain square footage inside and outside the house. This house can easily adapt to the various California climates. As DALE opens, there’s an increase in natural ventilation and lighting. When DALE closes to the “buttoned-up position, the users area protected from harsh temperature changes.

When the modules move apart, the walls in between become transparent, allowing the outdoor enviroment to engage with the interior space while maintaining the relationship between the modules.

Abstract Context 5B Thesis Studio, Sci-Arc Spring 2014, Instructor: Dwayne Oyler Anamorphosis in art refers to a distortion of mirrored or perspectival projection. while historically it was used as a trick of concealment, and often required a single view to “see” it correctly, this thesis uses anamorphism as a means for an architecture of contextual receptivity for many possible viewers. A contemporary built environment, specifically the city, can no longer be considered a homogenous cultural entity. Rather, it should be seen as a collection of intersections where various social, cultural, or economic events dissect. Architecture should be able to present different perspectives and realities based on the context around it. This thesis proposes the replacement of the Kengo Kuma’s Asakusa Cultural and tourism center in Tokyo, Japan, using Local context to create abstract form through the technique of anamorphosis. This technique will take various architectural elements around the site to create a form which has a coherent reading of the surrounding urban context, such as views of the neighboring temple, surrounding elevations, street signs, windows and close geometries. The thesis intends to create perceptual connection between context and form/ surface through the technique of anamorphosis.

Abstract Context\ Site information
Concept The anamorphism will take various architectural elements around the site to create a form which has a coherent reading of the surrounding urban context, such as views of the neighboring temple, surrounding elevations, street signs, windows and close geometries. 4 vantage points are established around the site with a reflective volume. The reflective volume reflects the surrounding context and is seen from the 4 vantage points. From each of these 4 vantage points, the reflected context elevation generated from the site is manipulated using the technique of anamorphosis. The closed geometries from the temples and the commercial buildings, street signs and building apertures from the projected elevations are formed to create extrusion and depression on the volumes on the site.

The operation from multiple vantage points also causes the spaces to intersect with one another. The visitor would experience a shift in elevation due the gradual incline of the floor is in this case a direct result of the anamorphic geometry coming through the sectional qualities of the building. The visitor will be treated to a double-high space where the ceiling beams tectonically express the lines of the geometry running in directions other than corner to corner.

Construction Documentation Applied Study, Sci-Arc Spring 2013, Instructor: Jay Vanoz & Pavel Getov A new project type has emerged in the City of Los Angeles, and elsewhere, spurred on by the need for high quality, small scale, ownership based residential living. In an effort to encourage increased density and ownership, free from the established drawbacks of the condominium model, the City of Los Angeles implemented the “Small Lot Subdivision” ordinance in order to provide for this new dwelling model. MultiFamily residential lots within the city can now be subdivided into ‘small lot subdivisions’. As an alternative to Condominium development, they provide for ‘townhome’ style projects, with buildings on individual lots. Each building is a standalone structure, and owned fee-simple. There are no homeowner associations for these developments as simple reciprocal easements and group maintenance agreements perform the task of coordinating joint use issues. Small lot structures can in principle can be demolished and replaced by the owner at will, without affecting their immediate neighbors. The student will be engaged in the design of a small lot dwelling unit as a part of a larger small lot subdivision project.

La Opinion Headquarters Idea Office, September 2012 - May 2014, Supervisor: Russell Thomsen & Eric Kahn Sparked by a strong interest in the dynamic urbanism of Los Angeles, the La Opinion Headquarters examines the Broadway corridor as a site in the downtown core. This linear slot of Manhattan-like urbanism is comprised of a fairly consistent fabric of eight to ten story buildings built in the previous century. As downtown becomes ‘urban’ (again), it is undergoing massive shifts in economies, scales and uses, conflating to produce the metropolitan.
87
Aerial Map © IDEA Office
La Opinion is the leading Spanish language newspaper for the Southern California region. In response to a need to bring administration and production into a single location, the new headquarters asserts itself as an urban presence. The production facilities are positioned in a tall, single story space located below grade along the east side of the site at Main Street. A field of linear skylights illuminate the entire space, while large windows to the street above allow passersby to observe the printing activity below. Small commercial venues are located at the street level along Broadway to the west, while the editorial offices for the paper occupy the gently curving ten-story bar building above. A large public event space, along with a daycare center for employees’ children float as discrete forms in the roof of the production hall and provide an interface between the offices above and the place of production below. In addition to promoting frequent chance interactions amongst a wide spectrum of occupants, this programming strategy serves to blur and conflate the mission of the newspaper as a collective, public voice with the people and public spaces that inhabit it.

A “Ford” Double Advanced Option Studio, Columbia University, Summer 2016 Supervisor: Ziad Jamaleddine Occupy Mies: Revisting Midtown Modernist Legacy What: Lobbies, plazas and blocks The studio will look at New York buildings’ lobbies as sites for architectural intervention and urban transformation. The space of the lobby marks our first encounter with architecture—it is situated at the threshold between exterior and interior, public and private, street and building, the urban and the architectural. Here, the space of the lobby becomes the entry point towards the design intervention, which could extend to include the rethinking of the entire building block, the subterranean infrastructure, and the building superstructure. Where: Midtown modern New York modernist-era buildings, located around midtown in Manhattan, present themselves as the perfect sites for such an experiment. Built between the mid-1950s and late-1960s at the height of the office building boom, NY modernism proliferated with a preset clear architectural agenda and an attitude towards the street that transformed the building laws – first triggered by Mies’s Seagram – shaping the evolution of the city to come. How: Adopt a building /an institution Each student is to select and study the architecture of his/her building, interrogate and conceptually reframe the (evolving) institutions that inhabited that building and drove its architecture and programmatic agenda. In many cases the institution that once gave birth to the architecture ceased to exist, leaving an orphaned generic open floor plan with a potential new mission, a latent purpose. Why: The rise of corporate architecture and the hyper regulation of public space Modernism in the post war era aimed for a totalizing architecture— a universal solution for the problem of architecture and the city. In Manhattan, this created a generation of corporate buildings with a ‘monoculture’ program (with an idealized citizen) and a ‘resolved’ ground floor (with an idealized public sphere), setting back the ‘exquisite’ object from the street, and declaring apartness. The studio thesis proposes the undoing of this (urban and social) gap and suggests instead the loosening of the threshold space— merging the interior scale with the urban scale, encompassing the new elastic and overlapping public/private relationship, multiplying its program, excavating and tapping into the infrastructure supporting it, while unpacking along the way the question of a city that is increasingly sanitized and exclusive. What If In a final act and perhaps a sign of rebirth, New York would kill its ‘sacred cows’—by hacking, squatting and occupying the ‘rationalist’ structures with a new architectural agenda, taking a cue from the ‘occupied wall street’ movement, a more socially driven agenda. What if, instead of a city of (hollow) hyper-private vertical spears (a descendant of modernist corporate architecture), we re-imagine a more democratic and inclusive city by reclaiming its ground as truly collective?

Ford Foundation History
Ford Foundation was founded in 1936 by Henry Ford who was the owner of Ford Automobile. The foundation was originally founded for the purpose of avoiding tax. As of 2014, the institution has owned $12,400,460,000 of assets and became the second largest foundation in United States. Originally operating only on the local range, the foundation has now focused solely on internationally issues, such as politics, art, and education. Their Headquarter was built in 1963 by Kevin Roche.
Mission When Ford Foundation was established in 1936 it’s mission is “To receive and administer funds for scientific, educational and charitable purposes, all for the public welfare”. As the Foundation grew and became involved in many fields internationally, their mission has changed into “Working with visionaries on the frontlines of social change worldwide”
Global Effort
As an International Foundation, they now have 10 offices operating outside of United States collaborating with different organizations focusing on many issues. They provided a total global giving of approximately 285 million each year. However, despite the huge amount of money ontributed each year, they have difficulties to deal with the issues effectively.
The prefabricated houses..... funded by Ford Foundation (to the region near Nile River). These later are proven to be a failure. Their rhythm and materiality have regulated their lifestyles. (Global agoraphobia, Lucia Allais) The funds and the material donated by Ford Foundation to their target area caused unexpected difficulties for the local people to make use of them effectively.

Fixed Rigid Plan
6 feet passage
The building floorplan consists of a rigid floorplan for the office with a fixed function. The office floorplan was designed out of a 6 feet grid that would create the different sizes of office space modules. The rigid design made Ford Foundation become inflexible and unadaptable to future changes.

Fixed Redundant Void Compared to many other famous modernist building such as Seagram and CBS where they located their plaza around the building. Ford Foundation internalized plaza within the building, creating a 10- floor spaces of overly redundant atrium spaces containing landscape that also has redudant meandering circulation.

“This building is not compatible with our culture as an organization,” Mr. Walker (one of the executive of foundation) said in an interview this month. “It is hierarchical, off -putting and inaccessible.”
The geographical separation makes the distance between policy maker and their beneficiaries
As policy maker to beneficiaries
No exhibition & insufficient space for negotiation
With different cooperation groups
No access route for handicaps
Ford Foundation No access to handicaps Ford Foundation Disconnectivity Diagram
Disconnectivity Based on the analysis, Ford Foundation is disconnected in 3 different levels. FIrst is the disconnection that happen with them as a policy maker to their target beneficiaries all around the world. Second is the disconnection between Ford Founddation and their partner organization due to the rigidity of their headquarter building design causing lack of meeting spaces and inflexibility to adjust to different situations. And lastly, the building has no access for handicaps, which creates disconnection between the institution to the public.

What IF?
What if ford foundation opens up the institution to shape the city and to be shaped by the city? Maybe Ford Foundation can provide flexible spaces to collaborate with local organizations to engage and connect with the local community and using this approach as a way to address the disconnectivity between established policy and their implementation in a global manner

Rigid design provides no potential for adaptation. Concrete structure also made adaptation impossible
Mary O’Connor Play ground, promising place to provide void for reinterpretation for Ford Foundation Building
Atrium relationship to Historical Tudor City Park
Site Proposal As ford foundation incorporate these new programs, their building is not flexible enough to adapt to these changes due to its rigid form and materiality and the only direction for them to expand is towards the playground and the park. So in the design we will use the adjacent playground in order to connect the park(which is the public) to ford foundation. Potential Local Partners These are the potential collaborators. As we can see they are within walking distance to ford foundation. and these organization have been involved directly with the local and ford foundation will need these organization in order to reach the public. We have red cross to care for medical and emergency. Free arts nYC and learning ally to educate children with mental disability. We have city harvest city meals and coalition for the homeless to serve for the homeless community by providing food and job training.

Concept Flexibility Through Redundancy Architecturally Ford foundation with its fixed rigid form and void redundancy does not achieve flexibility that is needed to adapt to different scenarios. Therefore we propose to achieve flexibility through the redundancy by expanding the void to the adjacent playground. And define the void with the grid system made from scaffolding structure. Through this, we are able to regenerate the masses based on the different scenarios and achieve flexibility in terms of spatial configuration. We have defined 5 scenarios. Which is daily operation, economic crisis, emergency crisis, world wide conference, and office relocation. Based on the scenarios we then defined the fixed elements which is the existing fire stairs, we also propose for new vertical circulation and basement to serve as storage. we also create catalogue of elements that can be added to the different scenarios. They come in the form of horizontal, vertical and diagonal elements. These are stored in the basement and can be installed when needed.
Step1: Reinterpret Ford Foundation. Define grids, void and mass
Step2: Rigidity has made itself flexibility impossible. We find adjacent playground as basic void to expand

Scenario 1: Daily Operation We have daily operation scenario to meet for everyday needs. The programs are arranged in different level in the form of suspended platform which are shaped to adjust to the function of the programs such as stepping planes for the meeting, partially open space to host exhibition and also incorporate green spaces. These spaces are
connected by the elevator and also ramps. The ramps and scaffolding structure penetrate into ford foundation connecting the ford foundation lobby entrance to the new site. The scenario will host these elements to accommodate for the program. such as soil unit for landscape and Digital wall for office use.

Scenario 2: Training and education For the training and education scenario. We determined them based on how the ford foundation can architecturally contribute to the local society and the world by provide a training ground for the citizen to practice how to build shelter as well as educating children and providing job training to adults . the programs are mainly including classrooms and training ground. The forms are divided into 3 zones with classrooms for the shelter building and job training. And
classrooms for kids and farming courses. As well as platform to practice building the shelters. Bridges will connect the ford foundation building to the new site. So the people from ford foundation can directly involve themselves with the public. The classrooms will have green spaces, open courtyard, as well as sandboxes to accommodate for children and classroom needs.

Scenario 3: Emergency Crisis In the case of emergency, the structure will provide shelter and also a communal gathering space for the city with infrastructure such as solar panels and antenna to provide for electricity and connection when its o grid. In this scenario we will have a large clinic to provide suďŹƒcient health care for the local.
The program is arranged into 3 dierent villages of shelter community. These communities share a communal space where utilities such as kitchen and shower is included as well as the clinic and landscape spaces.
