July 847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

Blood donors of all types are needed every day…..to assist critically ill patients, accident victims, people needing surgery and those patients suffering chronic diseases such as cancer and leukemia. The Village of Niles is hosting a community blood drive on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 8am to 2pm in a Life Source Donor Coach at Niles Family Fitness Center 987 Civic Center Drive. Please be generous and share life! Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 lbs, and be in general good health. There is no upper age limit and most medications are accepted. Please make sure to have something to eat prior to donating and bring identification with you. Only 40 minutes of your time can help save up to 3 lives! All donors will find out what their blood type is, receive a free cholesterol screening, blood pressure reading and iron level screening. Giving blood will not only help save another person’s life but possibly yours. When you give blood, it is regenerating new red blood cells in your body. Think of it as an oil change for your body! The only medication that is not accepted is blood thinners unless it is for maintenance. Anyone with a tattoo and piercing is now eligible to donate blood. Diabetics are able to donate as well. 100% of the blood collected this day will be going to the hospitals in the community. Several hospitals have a major shortage of blood, especially blood types O+, O-, A+ and B+. But, every blood type is necessary to sustain a life. We welcome everyone! All registered donors will receive a complimentary T-shirt and Water Bottle. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact LifeSource at 877-543-3768 or register on line at www.lifesource.org and enter the sponsor code SK60. But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements. - IMDB Dinner includes a hot dog, chips & dessert. What Is Social Work All About?

Extra

When people hear the word “social worker,” they might wonder, “What exactly does a social worker do?” At the Niles Senior Center, our staff of professional, licensed social workers can help older adults better understand the community support services and social/financial programs that impact their well-being. While we can answer questions about eligibility for programs, such as Benefit Access, we can also work with seniors to expand their abilities to cope with changes such as loss and illness. In addition, we can link older adults with needed community services, and also provide counseling, group services and advocacy to address the emotional and practical aspects of the aging process. We encourage you to learn more about us. What are some ways that social workers can be helpful? Niles Senior Center social workers are able to: • Provide information and answer questions about community resources for older adults to help them manage financial and health-related concerns. • Provide referrals to services and programs, such as Meals on Wheels, Community Care Program and help-in-the-home, as well as transportation and housing resources. • Conduct comprehensive social work assessments for homebound residents and connect them to resources that maximize independence. We also offer resource guides to assist with hiring in-home care and to help locate information on retirement homes, assisted living communities and extended care facilities. • Help seniors navigate the confusing maze of entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid. • Serve as advocates for older adults who may be vulnerable due to physical or emotional changes. • Counsel individuals, couples and families to assist with social and emotional concerns. • Work with families to strengthen their ability to cope with changes related to illness and loss. • Respond directly to stabilize crisis situations in the community to reduce the possibility of elder abuse or neglect.

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

In addition to counseling and case management, our senior social work department also offers the following groups and services: • Caregiver Group – This monthly support group offers support to family members engaged in the complex task of caring for the needs of a loved one. The group is a source of practical and emotional help that provides an opportunity to relieve stress and experience additional perspectives. For more information, contact Bev Wessels. • Effective Communication Group - Join others who are dealing with the issues of hearing loss. Learn about new techniques and devices. Please contact Maya Zelio with any questions. • Parent Group - A support group is also available for senior parents coping with the demands of caring for medically, emotionally or financially adult dependent children. Call Bev Wessels or Maya Zelio to learn more. • Grief Group (offered jointly with Niles Family Services) - Grief is a personal response to life losses, such as the death of a loved one. We offer short-term grief groups to help participants better manage the difficult emotions triggered by loss. Contact Bev Wessels for more information. • HERO Program - Niles Helping Elders through Referral and Outreach (HERO) is a community-based system for identifying and helping older adults at-risk physically, emotionally, socially or financially. Annual Variety Show – BE the Magic!

847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

It’s that time again – the time where we brush off the dust from our dancing shoes, warm up our vocal cords, and sharpen our wit – as we prepare for the Annual Niles Senior Center Variety Show!! In order to accommodate the growing talent pool here in Niles, we must put a limit on the number of acts. No one will be refused; however a 5 minute time limit will be in place for solo acts and a 10 minute time limit for group acts. Also, if you are interested in backstage magic, please call Kathlyn at 847-588-8420. Please note: This is a Variety Show; therefore there will be no guidelines as to what you can/can’t do – just try to keep it as “PG” as possible, and please respect the other performers and crew members. There will be no set rehearsals for the show; rehearsals must be done on your own. If you would care to rehearse at the center, a room can be reserved for you with prior notice. Tech/Dress rehearsal will be the day before the Show. Audition dates: NONE! If you’d like to be in the show, please call Kathlyn at 847-588-8420 with what piece you are performing.
