Understanding Elder Abuse and Neglect
Although elder abuse may be a less visible form of domestic violence, it can rob the most vulnerable elderly of their quality of life and basic human dignity.
Extra
The word “abuse” is often associated with images of victimized children or spouses. As a society, we know that abusive behavior in families can result in a legacy of violence and emotional turmoil.
9
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), the majority of elder abuse victims are older women -- with adult children identified as the most frequent abusers. The NCEA also found spouses and other family members to be the next most likely abusers. Unfortunately, this family-member-as-abuser scenario contributes to elder abuse being a highly underreported form of domestic violence. How can elder abuse occur without being detected? Abusive family members may become quite successful at hiding evidence of abuse or neglect from the outside world. Abusers are often shielded from public scrutiny by their families’ closed doors. Victims might also feel helpless, or unable, to seek assistance. The prospect of “going against” a person they depend on for care to get relief from the abuse may seem terrifying. It is also not uncommon for a victim to have a stronger desire to protect an abusive adult child or spouse from punishment than get help for themselves. Victims typically experience one, or sometimes a combination, of the following types of elder abuse: ** ** **
**
Elder abuse can occur for many reasons. Abusers may be unable to care for victims appropriately because of their own emotional or physical limitations. Also, caregivers managing round-the-clock care for frail family members may become abusive or neglectful due to their own emotional burnout. Whatever the reason elder abuse begins, it is critical to determine whether an alleged victim is safe and in need of services -- such as in-home care, emergency shelter or legal assistance. Under the Illinois Elder Abuse and Neglect Act, any person can anonymously report a case of suspected elder abuse. The Illinois Department on Aging, which must keep the identity of the reporter confidential, investigates all reports. Although the Department on Aging can offer services to victims of elder abuse, all competent older adults have the right to decline services. If you’re concerned about a neighbor, friend or relative, please contact Bev Wessels or a member of our social work staff at (847) 588-8420.
847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com
**
Neglect - Failing to meet an older adult’s basic needs. Examples of neglect include being denied access to medical care, food, clothing or shelter. A caregiver may be unaware that they are being neglectful -- often referred to as passive neglect. Financial Exploitation - Wrongful use of an older adult’s financial resources. Examples include forcing a senior to sign over Social Security checks or the deed to a house. Physical Abuse - Using physical force that could cause injury or impairment. Hitting, slapping or pushing are examples. Emotional Abuse – Swearing or other threatening verbal or nonverbal behaviors that cause fear or anxiety. Sexual Abuse - Defined by the NCEA as “non-consensual sexual contact of any kind with an elderly person.”
