Identifying the Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

Memory loss may be the most recognized symptom of Alzheimer’s, although problems with language as well as completing once-familiar tasks are also hallmarks of the disease. While it can be normal to forget phone numbers and names on occasion, people with dementia experience difficulty retaining new information more often. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it is important for people with the disease and their family members to know what care options and community resources are available. Support groups, in-home care and drug treatments are just some of the areas to explore when a loved one has Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association has created the following checklist of the 10 most common symptoms of the disease: *

Memory loss. Forgetting recently learned information. Gaps in short-term memory.

*

Difficulty performing familiar tasks. Everyday tasks that were once completed with ease now become more complicated. For example, meal preparation may become difficult as the person loses the ability to follow the steps in the process.

*

Problems with language. Simple words may be hard to access, compromising the person’s ability to communicate clearly.

*

Disorientation to time and place. A person may become lost on his or her street, or forget where they are.

*

Poor or decreased judgment. A person with Alzheimer’s may be over- or under-dressed for the weather. Poor judgment about money is another area of concern.

*

Problems with abstract thinking. Balancing a checkbook may become difficult, for example, as the ability to understand numbers is compromised.

*

Misplacing things. All people occasionally misplace items in expected places (such as placing a key on the table, instead of in a purse). With Alzheimer’s, items might pop up in inappropriate places where they wouldn’t wind up in the first place (such as finding a key in the freezer).

*

Changes in mood or behavior. Rapid mood swings may become more apparent, such as a calm moment suddenly giving way to an angry rage. Sudden mood changes may occur for no identifiable reason.

*

Personality changes. A once trusting individual may begin to act suspicious or paranoid about family members or friends.

*

Loss of initiative. Extremely passive behavior may set in, such as sitting in front of the television for hours or sleeping excessively. The person may lose interest in once cherished activities or events.

For additional questions and information, you may contact either Bev Wessels (847 588-8443) or Maya Zelio (847 5888441) in our Social Services Department.

Information Identifying the Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease 847. 588.8420 ~ www.vniles.com

Alzheimer’s disease affects approximately 4.5 million Americans, making it the leading cause of dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Dementia refers to symptoms indicating progressive loss of a person’s ability to think, reason and act.
