orn in the neighborhood of Brooklin (yes, with an i), São Paulo - Brazil, furniture designer Richard Velloso has made Brooklyn, New York his primary place of work and residence. Not only a designer, he also builds his own pieces and is one of the owners of Olga Guanabara, together with his two friends Renato Yoshima and Leon Yugrakh. Richard’s career in design has been extensive; for the first 12 years mainly in graphic design, and as an award winning creative director for global advertising agencies in New York and abroad. His switch to furniture and architectural design came in late 2010 when he started the company, named after his chocolate lab, Olga. Olga’s work is done using rough reclaimed materials, hard or soft woods - from fallen timbers to 100 year old warehouse beams and even old industrial factory flooring - mixed in with steel, occasionally featuring concrete and glass. However “brute” the materials might be at first, the pieces are infused with modern aesthetics, industrial influences and clean geometrical designs. This is due to Richard’s venerable respect and passion for some of the greats of architecture and design such as Philip Johnson, Oscar Niemeyer, IM Pei, Joaquim Tenreiro, and Louis Kahn. Richard is very hands-on at Olga, to say the least; from the designing process to the selection of materials, the cutting, sanding, welding, assembly and finishing, he gets his hands dirty and sometimes even burnt. After working on one of a kind pieces in the original retail location of DUMBO, Richard’s designs for Olga peaked the interest of one of his neighbors, furniture retailer, West Elm, who invited Richard to design an exclusive line for them. Now at the new location of Olga Guanabara in Sunset Park, Richard and the team are busy at work creating new designs and interior spaces for restaurants, hotels, retail spaces, and homes - we love to do it all. Please feel free to give us a call or set up an appointment for a visit.
