The Spring Summer collection of 2012 is an in-depth study of the sun-bleached uniforms and civilian clothing worn by field marshal Montgomery and his soldiers, the Desert Rats, in the African desert during WWII. Desert warfare was a tactician’s dream but a logistician’s nightmare. The western desert was different from any other theater of battle, in that it was limited to coastal plains and hemmed in by high ground and steep depressions. The soldiers’ uniforms had to be effective, comfortable and hard wearing as strategy would often involve swift, mobile advances in extreme conditions. Striking elements of this collection include British desert camouflage, basket weave cotton and linen, stiff khaki drill combined with lightweight fabrics – all of which offer ease of movement during rapid advances. —

“ He (Paul Smith, ed.) brought a vintage jacket to my stand and asked me my opinion. I did not know about vintage back then, mind you. Sometimes it takes a few years to learn, to catch on, and then your life changes, doesn’t it? ” — Nigel Cabourn Taken from Journal de Nîmes Nº3 The British Issue An interview with Nigel Cabourn by Menno van Meurs and Olivier van der Hagen.

Nouvelle de Nîmes Dº 1

Tenue de Nîmes

Whereas most of the photographers in the world have moved on to digital photography, Dutch fashion photographer Thomas Tukker still embraces the analog method for most of his projects.

An online and offline gazette on jeans and the art of permanent style by Amsterdam’s finest denim store, Tenue de Nîmes.

Elandsgracht 60 1016 TX Amsterdam The Netherlands

He uses custom made 4x5 inch rangefinder cameras to simply outclass the digital quality of today. Tukker’s approach is as unique in concept as it is in the visual results he produces. Conventional 4x5 inch cameras demand a slow and tedious process in order to take a photo. These custom cameras offer a huge advantage here, as they allow for a more dynamic and faster way of shooting because of their unique rangefinder function. The fine, artisan-like quality these cameras produce with their fixed, focal length Rodenstock lenses turned out to be a perfect match for Nigel Cabourn’s high quality clothing. —
