BRINGING TOGETHER

HE OLONY ND OCIETY __

Objective To design a classic typographic communication system and refine it in a variety of challenging designs in book form and print formats.

Challenge The aim was to design a book around a specific topic, and to communicate a convincing typographic story within a scientific context. The text was to be appropriated from a variety of sources, and reconstructed to tell a unique visual story by not only typography, but also through infographics, photography and illustration.

Results The final book was about the external morphology and unexplained disappearances of bees. Each chapter was carefully designed to mimic the biology of bees as well as explain colony collapse disorder. I tried to demonstrate the aesthetic and philosophical issues regarding the innovative use of type. I used the typefaces with prudence to show the role of typography in communication and to articulate thoughts and feelings about type. The enormous amount of photography and infographics were needed for the details pertaining to bees. I made use of call out highlighting, overlapping and repetition to represent the colony and society in the life of bees.

It curves towards the wing bases at its lateral horizontal metanotum is common also to Andrena Colletes, and Halictus, however in Anthophora Coelioxys Megachile, and Osmia the metanotum slopes sharply downward posteriorly, and also in Apis and Bombus the metanotum is essentially vertical.

In all northwestern bees, except

Dioxys, metanotum is weakly rounded or flattened. The anterior and mid tibiae of the female, and all three tibiae of the male, are approximately as long as the femora and constricted sharply at their bases. There is a short robust spine on the anterior apical margin of the front and also mid tibiae in both sexes of Nomia, termed the tibial spine, also on the lower inner surface of each the tibia there are one or two long tibial spurs. It is on the fore tibia in Nomia, forms the part of the strigilus or antenna cleaner. This spur is modified to form the spinelike base or males which is pointed apically and also expanded into the broadened plate, or velum, along its inner margin.

The mid tibiae each bear one elongate

weakly curved spur, and each posterior tibia has two. This condition exists in all northwestern bees, except that the spurs are wanting on the mid tibiae in some Megachile and also on the hind tibiae in Apis.

The hind tibiae of the males

of Nomia melanderi are greatly expanded on the anteroapical margins. The nonmelanic protrusions are very sufficiently large to conceal the apical spurs which lie in the convoluted underside of the apical tibial lobes.

Each posterior tibia of

female Nomia bears the basitibial plate on it is outer surface just below its articulation.

Objective To redesign an existing product in a sustainable way and create a book explaining the history and the evolution of the product.

Challenge R3 is an organization that promotes sustainable design by identifying new and better ways to design products and experiences. Each product redesign should consider form, function as well as technology and recyclability of materials. My book, published by R3, was focused on progressive thinking and being socially responsible for how and why we make a product and how it will impact our future.

Results My project focused on the common plastic bottle. Because of its widespread usage and and subsequent empty bottles, there has been a disastrous impact on our environment. My redesign will show how good design and sustainable materials can reduce problems such as pollution and other human health concerns caused by these infrequently unrecycled plastic bottles. It will also address how good design can lower cost and energy usage.

Objective Redesign the identity of a nationally know corporation. Guided by the knowledge and information learned in the research phase, develop a Unique Selling Position (U.S.P.) in the form of a guideline manual in book form, a website and 30 applications.

Challenge To select a brand in decline and reinvent it through the development of a new identity, a visual standard and the introduction of brand extensions. Samsonite was one of the largest leaders of luggage and travel goods. The challenge was to boost Samsonite, because it is loosing ground to its competitors.

Results I created a U.S.P called “For Unique Traveler and worked on the concept of the boarding pass system. I began the design process by analyzing the current Samsonite design elements and conducted an audit of what is working and what is not. Based on the research, I created a new logo that had a fresh young look and feel.

Objective To examine the marketing of a project line through packaging for household appliances, including brand analysis, sustainability, model making and production procedures.

Challenge This project is designed to develop multiple product lines, point– of–purchase displays while learning to evaluate packaging as it relates to marketing and design. The design packaging system for household appliances by Godiva should take a high-end brand standard.

Results The new and improved package design is based on strategy and marketing criteria for the purpose of creating compelling packaging for the retail market. I tried to have a better understanding of the unique packaging materials available. Warm photography, a rich color palette, gold foil and ornamentation represent the elegant household appliances by Godiva.

EET UR TER TY & __

Objective To design of a hundred page book based on typographic communication with the topic of survival.

Challenge There is a taste beyond the four basic tastes sweet, sour, bitter and salty. It is called umami. This is the taste within foods like some fish, cured meats, mushrooms, ripe tomatoes, chinese cabbage, spinach, cheese, soy sauce and green tea. The final book introduced and informed people about the discovery of fifth taste.

Results I created various photographs, infographics and illustrations that will help to people understand umami. The color palette and pastel tone represent this delicate and light taste based on scientific subject matter.

Objective To create a new brand image of a line of pet products within a cohesive packaging system.

Challenge This project was to develop its brand creatively, redesign packaging graphics and explore new structural designs.

Results I redesigned a pet food brand named Dogswell in order to make it more unique and memorable. The new target audience was young adults who love pets and treat them with care. To make Dogswell personable all the graphics and colors convey a brand that is friendly, fresh and tasteful.

BRINGING TOGETHER

EAR D IBLE NGUAGE __

Objective To train the eye and learn the technical precision of typesetting, including type specification, copy fitting, kerning, and terminology.

Challenge To promote a festival where thousands of participants join to raise awareness for the world environment movement. The challenge was to choose the ideal typography to display type classifications, and the necessary rules and details associated with the proper setting of type.

Results The deliverables include a typographic poster, ticket, application, flyer, CD case, page layout, book covers, and other forms of print and two窶電imensional projects that were a visual representation of my growth as a designer. I designed my own visual exercises and developed a deep understanding of the subtle nuances of type, as well as a great appreciation for the art of typography.

ATIVE NKING IN NING __

Objective To investigate the specific aspects of various publications, including posters, brochures, a mailer, flyer, ticket and website, and develop strong visual formats and structure for maximum communication effectiveness.

Challenge To create new visual print media for the launch of a new organization. To combine two previous projects into this event. One project was creating a unique designed self–therapy book to boost serotonin levels. Another project was designing a poster for a centripetal visual arts organization.

Results The final event was created to improve awareness of creative thinking and brain training through creating a personal cube and manipulating it. A white cube, paper cut images, a soft color palette, and playful typefaces were chosen to attract people who need self help.

EAT AS ESH SIGNS __

Objective To redesign Kohl’s packaging by developing a revitalized and refocused branding system. This was a collaborative project with three other students to create a house of brands for a new Kohl’s that will bring it above and beyond its competition like Target.

Challenge Kohl’s needs to connect with its demographic on a psychological and emotional level to communicate quality and sophistication through strong product design and establish a deep brand loyalty through its many locations. Kohl’s also needs to focus on its customers needs as opposed to just their wants.

Results To make Kohl’s the destination most preferred by customers, we created a house of brands to establish strong brand loyalty. Each tier will reflect an element of Kohl‘s history brought back to life through the product and package design. Tier 1: Loft, a value line of home and living decor. Tier 2: Essentials, a mid–level line of dining, kitchenware, and pantry. Tier 3: Sonoma Classic, a high end line of home and living decor. Tier 4: Little Beans, a value line of children’s educational toys and décor.
