Please read and observe the following:

• Excessive dirty vehicles will not be allowed entry, therefore ensure vehicle is clean before arrival.

• All vehicles transporting livestock will be subject to a documentation check before entry to market site.

• All visitors and traders must ensure they wear clean clothing and footwear before entering market site.

• All visitors and traders using car park areas please use main entrance.

• Hauliers and farmers delivering livestock must disinfect their boots before and after loading or unloading.

• Livestock purchased or unsold will not be allowed to move unless an authorised “pass slip” has been issued by the main office.

• No livestock will be allowed to remain on the premises after a sale.

• Only staff, livestock hauliers, owners or their agents are permitted to load or unload livestock.

• Wash hands thoroughly when leaving pennage areas.

• Please observe our staff’s instructions at all times.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals, or to fix a Reserve Price, which must be notified to the Auctioneers in writing before or at the time their animal enters the Sale Ring. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price. All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5.25% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the sale are registered with the respective breed societies unless stated otherwise.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

ANIMAL WELFARE: Vendors and Purchasers should note the CODE OF PRACTICE published by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales IS OPERATIVE IN BORDERWAY MART and that weakly, unhealthy or injured stock will be refused entry by the Auctioneers. Enquiries should be directed through the market office to the Auctioneers’ ANIMAL HEALTH and WELFARE OFFICER (Mr Andrew Templeton).

INSURANCE: A representative of H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

UK TAGS/TATTOO MARKS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their UK Tags/Tattoo marks examined as an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the UK Tags/Tattoo marks of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures.

No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE.

PRIZE MONEY: (but not trophies) will be withheld unless the winners are sold, either by auction or private treaty.

NBA WARRANTIES: This Sale is also held subject to the Special Terms and Conditions of Sale recommended for Sales of Pedigree Beef Cattle by the National Beed Association. The preparation of these Terms and Conditions has proved a lengthy and costly process and, in order to defray the legal and other costs involved, and to provide a continuing source of revenue to assist the Association in its vital work for Pedigree Cattle Breeders, the Council of the Association hasdecided that a special levy, amounting to £3 per male and £2 per female head/lot sold (plus VAT) shall be charged to each Purchaser.

ABERDEEN ANGUS

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society have adopted the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the N.B.A. This Sale is held subject to these rules and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the N.B.A. Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfers will be effected by the Auctioneers and the Aberdeen Angus Society as soon as possible after the Sale. Full Pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all members.

MINIMUM SELLING PRICE - There will be a Minimum Selling Price of 2200 guineas on each bull presented for sale - i.e. if no opening bid of 2200gns is received for any particular lot, that lot will be passed out of the ring unsold.

NOTICE TO VENDOR/PURCHASER:

Any animals that fails the veterinary inspection on dentition and dependent on the veterinary’s decision the animal may be offered for sale, but for commercial use only. This must be announced from the rostrum at the time of sale.

HEREFORD

CONDITIONS OF SALE: This Sale is held subject to the conditions of Sale drawn up by the NBA and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

TRANSFERS: HEREFORD CATTLE: a fee of £24 + VAT will be charged to the Vendor.

BEEF SHORTHORN

CONDITIONS OF SALE: This Sale is held under the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society’s sale auction rules and subject to recommended Conditions of Sale drawn up by the National Beef Association (NBA). This sale is held subject to these rules and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

SOCIETY SALE LEVY: A levy of 3% of the net (after deduction of auctioneers commission) will be deducted from the vendors statements before settlement and paid to the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society.

UPSET PRICE - There will be an ‘Upset Price' of 2000gns on each bull entered for the sale, if no opening bid of 2000gns is received for any particular lot, the animal concerned will pass out the sale ring unsold.

PRE-SALE INSPECTION – All animals entered for the sale must be available for inspections as per the timetable. The officially appointed Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society stewards will check the animals for any patent defects, such as lameness, etc. The bulls will also be weighed.

This year we offer our annual draft of heifer’s free of the bull to fit with a spring calving system. We have been regular supporters of the Carlisle Spring Beef Shorthorn sale since its inception and return each year to sell our surplus breeding heifers from our 50 cow herd. CALVING EASE

Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. Using a bull in the Top 1% for CE direct (+7.0) is predicted to result in approximately 15% fewer assisted calvings in 2 year old heifers compared with using a bull in the Bottom 1% (-10.2). This range is predicted to be smaller in cows. Remember that the dam’s genetics and management are significant factors influencing calving ease in any mating.

Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 16 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females.

If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher Calving Ease Direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.

Self Replacing index

The Angus Self Replacing index is aimed at an Angus herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 18 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 615 kg live weight (330 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Angus sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.

Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

Superior carcase sire scheme

Hereford Cattle Society is offering a financial incentive to users of certified superior carcase sires. These are bulls which have been identified from their Breedplan records as having potential to produce improved carcase quality in their progeny.

Purchasers of a superior carcase sire will be eligible to claim £5 per calf on the progeny of the bullconfined to a maximum of 100 calves during a claim period of up to four years (three crops of calves) from the purchase date of the bull.

The incentive may only be claimed once in the bull’s life and is confined to the original purchaser.

Claims to be submitted by the owner of the bull at six monthly intervals for calves up to six months of age by 30 June and 31 December each year – no payments will be made in respect of any calf that is over six months of age at the time the claim is received.

All claims must be supported by an official list obtained by the owner of the bull from, in the case of England, Scotland and Wales – BCMS (British Cattle Movement Service) and in Northern Ireland – APHIS (Animal and Public Health Information Service).

Calves will be subject to a random DNA test for sire verification and checks will be made with the appropriate authorities that the bull was present on the farm at the time of conception of the calves.

Bulls qualifying for this incentive will be highlighted within the notes of the sale catalogue.

Completeness of performance recording

One of the key factors underpinning the accuracy of EBVs is the quantity of performance information recorded with Breedplan. ‘Completeness of performance’ assesses the quantity of pedigree and performance information submitted to Breedplan by an individual herd.

Star rating

The star rating for each herd is calculated based on the proportion of calves within the herd born in a fixed five year period which have been performance recorded for each trait. Different criteria are used within each individual breed depending on the traits for which EBVs are calculated within the breed. Each herd receives a star rating on a 0 – 5 scale (including half stars) that summarises the ‘completeness’ of their performance information.

Herds with a star rating of 5 are considered to be gold standard and are recording ‘complete’ performance information for all traits for which EBVs are available.

While ultimately EBV accuracy values provide an indication of the reliability an animal’s EBVs, the completeness of performance star rating provides both pedigree and commercial producers alike with an assessment of how much performance has been submitted to Breedplan by a herd when looking at the EBVs for animals within their herd.

Herds with a star rating of “5” are gold standard. They are considered to be recording “complete” performance information with BREEDPLAN for all animals across all traits for which EBVs are available.

Herds with a star rating of “4” or “4.5” are silver standard. They are considered to be recording comprehensive performance information with BREEDPLAN for most animals and traits, but are recording less performance than a 5 star herd.

Herds with a star rating of “3” or “3.5” are considered bronze standard. They are considered to be recording performance information with BREEDPLAN for a reasonable number of traits or animals, but are recording less performance information than a 4 or 5 star herd.

Herds with a rating of “2.5” or less are recording information with BREEDPLAN but not for all animals or traits. They are recording less performance information than a 3, 4 or 5 star herd.

Important rule about buying and selling and risk status

It is important to remember that if an animal of a lower risk status level is added to your herd, if it is ever sold on from your holding it must be sold as its original risk level status (i.e. a risk level 3 animal added to a risk level 2 herd must remain as risk level 3 if sold again).

However, animals added from a higher risk level status herd to a lower risk level status herd take on the status of the herd that they are added to and must be sold as such (i.e. a risk level 1 animal added to a risk level 4 herd would then have to be sold as risk level 4 in the future).

If you are looking to buy or sell stock it is important to know your own herd’s Johne’s disease risk level, as well as that of any cattle that you might add to your herd.

Level 1 – There have been at least three clear annual herd tests and there is a Johne’s disease herd health plan in place. This is the lowest level of risk

Level 2 – There has been at least one clear herd test but the herd does not yet qualify for level 1 status. There is a Johne’s disease herd health plan in place

Level 3 – 3% or less of the herd were identified as reactors at the most recent herd test. There is a Johne’s disease herd health plan in place

Level 4 – More than 3% of the herd were identified as reactors at the most recent herd test. There is Johne’s disease herd health plan in place

Level 5 – This includes herds without a health plan for Johne’s disease, herds that do not adhere to the mandatory elements of the health plan and herds that do not carry out the required testing. This is the highest level of risk

Selling on animals that have been purchased from another herd: When an animal is purchased from a herd with an inferior Johne’s disease risk level than the herd to which it is added, the purchased animal retains the risk level of the herd of origin should it be sold on. For example it cannot be sold as risk level 1 if purchased as risk level 2, 3, 4 or 5.Animals that are purchased from a herd with a superior risk level can be sold only at the risk level that applies to the purchasers herd at the time of subsequent sale. For example, an animal purchased as risk level 1 into a risk level 4 herd can only be sold at the risk level that applies to the level 4 receiving herd at the time of subsequent sale

Purchased animals are described on sale certificates as ‘not-homebred’ and cannot be sold with a herd status, with the exception of animals sourced from 25 Risk Level 1 herds that have remained throughout their lives in a Risk Level 1 herd and appropriate evidence of this is provided to their health scheme provider. This is at the discretion of the health scheme provider and assessed on a case by case basis.

Steers and heifers are weaned and marketed at an average of 350kg live weight at 8 months of age for further finishing or as replacement heifers.

The Society and its officers shall not have any liability for the accuracy of the information contained within either the website database or the pedigree certificate.

The Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society has previously sanctioned the use of Maine Anjou cattle (a French breed of Shorthorn derivatives) in a controlled breed improvement programme. That successful programme is now complete and has been closed (Oct 1999).

All calves born on or after 1 January 2001 shall be registered in the Coates Herd Book (Beef) with no mention of percentage (pertaining to Maine Anjou influence) provided that both parents are previously registered in Coates Herd book (Beef). Purchasers who are interested in the influence of Maine Anjou in any prospective purchase are invited to inspect the four-generation pedigree certificate or contact the Secretary for further details. Cattle born before 1 January 2001 will continue to display the percentage of pure Shorthorn blood on their certificate.

Other Society rules as follows:

Amended February 2023

• By a ruling of the Directors of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society a levy of three per cent of the net sale price (after deduction of auctioneers’ commission) will be deducted from the vendors statements before settlement and paid to the Beef shorthorn Cattle Society

• All Cattle will be sold with an NBA fertility warranty. The cost of this warranty is £6 + vat per male animal and £4 + vat per female animal. This cost will be divided equally between the vendor and the purchaser and collected by the auctioneer at the time of sale. The auctioneer will pay this money directly to the NBA

• Animals will be inspected in the sale premises, and, by a ruling of the Directors, the inspector(s) is empowered to instruct any exhibitor to withdraw from the show and sale any animal they consider not to be of the required standard. Bulls will be inspected by a vet appointed by the Society. Bulls not attaining the required minimum testicle size or displaying irregular testicular conformation or displaying overshot or undershot jaws will be rejected from the sale.

• There will be a minimum selling price of 2000gns on each bull entered for sale. Bulls not attracting a bid of 2000gns will be passed out of the ring unsold

• All show animals must be halter led

• Grading register animals will be sold at the end of the sale.

• The Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society operates a compulsory health testing scheme at all Society sales listed below.

• As of 1 January 2021, any bull carrying a double deletion of any myostatin variant will be ineligible for a Society recognised show class or a Society recognised or supported sale. This rule will also apply to bulls carrying single deletions of two distinct variants.

Health Testing Requirements for Beef Shorthorn Society Sales

Amended February 2023

1) All animals entered for Beef Shorthorn Society Sales must come from herds which are members of a registered CHeCS health scheme and must have been testing for BVD and Johne’s Disease for a minimum of 12 months.

2) All animals must be individually blood tested no more than 3 months prior to the sale for BVD antigen and IBR antibody unless coming from a herd which has accredited status for the relevant disease. Accredited herds do not need individual animal tests for the diseases for which they are accredited.

3) All females whether from an accredited herd or not must be vaccinated against BVD to provide cover for the relevant period (ie, the sale date) relating to the type of vaccine. The vaccination date must be submitted to the relevant health scheme provider when the pen card is requested. It is recommended that males should also be vaccinated as above.

4) Animals testing antigen positive (PI) for BVD will not be accepted for sale.

5) The results of the blood tests must be displayed at the sale on a health pen card supplied by a CHeCS accredited health scheme.

6) All animals must have a risk level for Johne’s displayed on the pen card and this must be a minimum level 4 Non homebred animals will be identified as such.

7) All animals must have an individual pen card with the date of the last TB test and the testing interval (or completed as ‘TB exempt’ where applicable). The box must not be left blank.

8) All bulls born after January 1st 2018 and entered for sale at a Society Sale must have their myostatin status listed in the sale catalogue.

9) Calves under 2 weeks old cannot be accepted for sale.

10) Calves at foot over 6 months from non BVD Accredited herds need to be tested for BVD antigen. Calves from BVD accredited herds do not need to be tested.

11) No other health information will be allowed to be displayed, except for official semen test results.

12) It is the responsibility of the vendor to ensure that the correct tests have been carried out and that the health pen cards are available for the sale.

Advisory checklist for vendors

1) Blood test all animals bound for sale (excluding calves at foot under 6 months old) no more than 3 months prior to the sale and at least 1 month prior to sale.

2) Vaccinate all animals bound for the sale against BVD. Ask your vet for advice on when to vaccinate.

3) Send the blood samples to one of the CHeCS accredited health schemes (details on website) stating that tests are required for BVD antigen and IBR antibody and request a health pen card stating clearly that the animals are entered for sale at a Beef Shorthorn Society Sale. If your vet is sending off the samples on your behalf, ensure they see a copy of this letter and that all the required tests are requested on the sample submission form.

4) If herd accredited for BVD and IBR, request pen cards at least 4 weeks prior to sale with vaccination information.

5) Make sure you have received the cards before you arrive at the sale and check that all the relevant information is displayed on the card.

In order to give prospective purchasers as much information as possible about the health status of cattle for sale, we are also including a Herd Health Declaration. The Herd Health Declaration should be returned to the auctioneers with the entries. This information will be printed in the front of the sale catalogue under the vendor’s name.

ANIMALS ARRIVING AT A SALE WITHOUT A COMPLETED HEALTH PEN CARD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE SALE. IT IS ALSO THE VENDOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THE CARDS ARE CORRECT.

In this catalogue we have printed QR code for each animal, this will take you to the web page which will give you full information on pedigree, bar charts and photographs if available

Step 1

Download and install a QR code app on your smartphone if you don't yet have one. Open your App Store, Market, Marketplace or App World application (for the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms, respectively).

Step 2

Search for "QR code reader," and then download and install a free app. The app should be named something to the effect of "QR Code Scanner" or "QR Scanner." There are paid versions of these kinds of apps, but the free ones work just as well.

Step 3

Open the QR barcode app on your smartphone, and choose "scan from camera" or "scan QR code" from the main menu. A new window should open with a square in the middle of it.

Step 4

Center the QR code in the middle of the square that's currently displayed by your QR barcode app. The app should automatically take a picture of the QR code for you when it has finished scanning the code. A new pop-up menu will appear, with the QR code information on it.
