The Newbould family have been farming at Small Rigg Farm near the village of Lochmaben for the past 35 years following a move north from the county of Lancashire. Recently, the farm has been sold to a neighbouring dairy resulting in this fine herd being offered for sale at Borderway on Wednesday 23rd April.
Approximately 10 years ago the decision was taken to introduce Montbeliarde sires to the high yielding Holstein herd at Small Rigg. A decade later and this change in direction has resulted in one of the FINEST herds in the UK, one that excels in Production, Conformation and Profitability. This highly efficient herd is currently averaging 10103kgs 4.02% bf 3.36% p cc125 on a robot milking system with an average DIM of 150. At the latest recording the herd was averaging 35.6kgs.
The herd comprises 46 heifers in milk, 33 second calvers, 21 third calvers & 23 cows with four or more calvings. The milking heifers are sired by Ilax and the cows are sired by Navajo, Nagui & Nirvanaur. 28 arefreshly calved in 2025 with 15 due soon and 36 are due in the summer mainly to the British Blue.
The herd is fed on a full TMR comprised of high quality forage with top dressing fed via the robots at milking time. They are cubicle trained and are excellent cows that will perform at the highest level in any modern dairy system.
One of the BIG ATTRACTIONS in this sale are the youngstock, they are well grown and display enormous potential. 21 In Calf heifers sell due to top AI sexed sires followed by 32 bulling heifers & 23 heifer calves. These heifers are sired by the BEST Montbeliarde sires including Rousillion, Redrock, Odyno & Savino
The herd is vaccinated for IBR & Rota Virus. All the animals are BVD Tag tested and the herd is free. The herd has been Johnes tested for several years and is regarded as low risk. The farm is situated in a four year TB testing area and there has never been a case on the farm.
