Juan Carlos Ibanez

Portraits of hidden traces on the soul

The pictorial work of Cecilia Valadez should be analyzed from an aesthetic and psychologically. With an expressionist style and a monochrome palette she shows us in most of her works the drama of abused women. The management of the human figure is very well kept in their actions, and their volumes accentuated with lights, shadows and perspective; typical qualities in works of Cecilia causes in the public interest in digging into the history of each of the women she presents in her paintings. Proof of this is her latest work: “I was like a sea asleep” dedicated to Alfonsina Storni emphasizes the beauty of the figure sunk into the ocean floor surrounded by colorful fish and vegetation. Technically she managed the horizontal deformation of the body.. morphological maintaining perfect harmony. The naked nobody will notice, oblivious to everything scrutiny of their private parts covered completely with her legs and arms are intertwined resulting in a surprising expressiveness. The shape of the face is half hidden, as in all women to which she has given life to their Brushes-, and this is precisely where we affirm that most of her plastic collection is a series of portraits traces hidden in the soul.

Mayra Viviana Zamora (USA)

miramayraart@yahoo.com instagram.com/miramayraart facebook.com/Mayra.Viviana.Zamora Artist Biography:

Artist Statement:

Zamora was born in Austin and raised in the small town of Tivoli, Texas. She graduated top of her class, receiving numerous scholarships which helped fuel her dream of being an Educator and an Artist. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.

My work is all encompassing - of reason, happiness, life, and expression. Beyond general aesthetic lies a meaningful and embraced memory. A moment of my own captured and recreated by the use of Calaveras as variations of family, friendships, and icons. I am able to express these affections using symbolic values from my Mexican heritage and culture.

Zamora currently works at the Art Museum of South Texas as an Outreach Coordinator and Arts After-School Teacher at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center. The painter has participated in exhibitions in North and South Texas, New York City, Los Angeles, Corpus Christi’s Annual Day of the Dead celebration, 1 of 24 artists selected to participate in Phase I and Phase II of the Loteria Mural in downtown Corpus Christi. She is a member of Kspace Contemporary Art Gallery, Nexus Art Collective, RAWartists International Art Group, & V.I.P International Art Group.

Although, calaveras are associated with the Dia de Los Muertos and death, I enliven this concept by placing characters in real and familiar situations; drawing inspiration from the human emotion behind Jose Guadalupe Posada's calaveras and symbolism in Frida Kahlo’s paintings. They are amongst a kaleidoscope of color which pays tribute to a tradition and culture which celebrates life. I pay homage to what I consider the most important elements of art: Line, Shape, & Color. I have an obsession with lines, because to me the line is the most important element of art. The borders and backgrounds are a blend between language and atmosphere.

Zamora incorporates her love of the Dia De los Muertos by depicting family members, icons, & friends in her style flourished with color, happiness, & passion. Zamora pays homage to what she considers the most important elements of art: Line, Shape, & Color. To build a connection with the viewer, Zamora includes a unique vocabulary and hidden writing by creating words camouflaged within colorful patterns and borders. My painting brings to the fore the idea, attitude, concept, not a specific aesthetic experience based on pictorial elements of the image. For me it is more important approach to the image as the object of analysis, rather than its immediate, sensuous experience. That’s why my artistic process includes one of the most important dimensions that are engaged in general painting can own, and that is the power to launch a man into his own questions, and to put it at the point in question and the necessary review and return to his real, true sense and essence. Lorna Otero (Puerto Rico)

lornabeatriz@yahoo.com

Multidisciplinary artist, Lorna Otero (Puerto Rico, 1979), employs photography to create art based on, or inspired by, human relations and their social contexts (Relational Aesthetics). This installation of photographs, serves as a photo album that takes the form of a tree. The work is an interactive community project that doubles as a research tool. Gathering portraits of contemporary families living in a multicultural city, the work challenges the conventions and ideals of what a traditional family is or should be and how these families weave into the fabric of a community. Resisting the concept of the artist’s authorship, this installation, is created and completed only through the audience’s participation. In essence, Otero’s work is a blank canvas. She creates the support in which the public, through their contribution of family portraits, will build an album that reflects the rich and diverse families of South Florida.

After Lilly Martin Spencer’s, fi!!fo!!fum!! from the Series Portraits, by women artist, archival c-print 36x 43 inches.

In this compelling installation there is a fusion between the public and the private realms and a blurring of the lines that traditionally separate the type of images exhibited in an artistic institution and the everyday images created in domestic or social spaces. These everyday images remind us of a statement made by author, Brenda K. Marshall regarding the emphasis on differences rather than the identity that characterizes postmodern life: “People (and societies) are perceived as sites of difference.” Ultimately, this album aims to question what the definition of family is today, and to highlight and celebrate the rich diversity of these families that make up this dynamic and ever-changing region.

The human being is inspiring. We learn about people from their culture, figures from their past whether real or imaginary. We comprehend cultures from past glories, hopefully learning from past tragedies.

We learn about ourselves from our heroes or simply from the man next door. To be able to capture the complexity yet the simplicity of one facial expression is my way of paying tribute to humanity, showing history in the making .....on canvass.

Jennifer Broderick (U.S.A.)

jenniferdesigns08@gmail.com

Jennifer Broderick began drawing during her Lexington, Ohio childhood. Drawing was her way to heal from traumas she experienced before age 14. During her recovery, she developed a passion for drawing in pen and ink. At the age of 12, her father, an engineer, gave her first technical pen. He stressed the importance of technique and discipline, yet encouraged creativity and individuality. Jennifer creates order out of chaos, obsessing over line variation and resolution. She named her abstract creations “Spontaneous Evolutions”, as she doesn’t plan the outcome of any of her drawings. Each piece takes on a life of its own as she gets lost creating the highly detailed lines, swirls, circles and abstract shapes that at times evoke the works of Wassily Kandinsky, yet are clearly a style all her own. Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Columbus College of Art & Design where she studied Advertising Design and Fine Arts. She believes that her design education has had a strong influence on her fine art work.

“I believe that good design is the foundation of all art. I consider myself a designer as much as I do a fine artist. The difference between the two is purpose.” Jennifer also works as a stationery and surface designer but gets most of her enjoyment creating pen and ink drawings. “It is my intention that the viewer is taken in by the details and interprets each piece in their own way. I want to establish the strongest emotional bond between me and my audience”. Jennifer’s passion comes from within. “Making art is as important to me as breathing. It pulled me out of a dark place during my childhood and led me into a world of hope, happiness and opportunities. I want my art to convey the feeling of an unquiet mind that became restful, focused and undisturbed. “Jennifer Broderick’s art are messages of triumph.” ~ Katherine Kotaw

Arterick approach the visual arts through variations of pleasure felt by the human brain, in front of the art. A variation which requires and has requested through the history of change in different shapes and styles to be able to evolve over time. Thus, Arterick interacts with the viewer’s brain making an immediate change in the appreciation of the work and can change from decorative Cubism to Abstract Expressionism in seconds, and also, can go through the romance to decorative geometric abstraction. My passion for drawing and painting started as a child. I studied at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and continued taking courses at the Nassau County Museum of Art and The Art Students League in New York. I’ve shown my work in Galleries in New York and Miami, Florida My most recent work was exhibited at the The Miami Convention Center from December 4th - 7th 2014

I create fabric sculptures on painted canvas. The fabrics are a celebration of colors, patterns and textures. What appears to be a painting is in fact a deep study of texture and color combinations. In essence it is a dialogue between my thoughts, the fabric and the canvas.

My work is a contemporary statement through the perception on Inner space and Outer space juxtaposing with time and space of life experience, I incorporate visual, emotional and psychological impressions of urban tension, raw emotions and harsh realities tempered with gentle optimism and beauty seeking the combination of objective and nonobjective serves as a matrix between social and cultural spaces.

cognitive world, between the unknown and the known. The works often begin with a general idea I might be reflecting on reactions with cultural and personal events of Inner Space and Outer Space associated with our lives, thoughts, memories, and imaginations. I translate these reactions into works made up of simplified forms, often with outsized proportions, to transcend time and space.

The space we live in on a day-to-day basis, most of us are so caught up living in this world as it is that we don’t have much time or energy to focus on how the world might become better and For many--probably most--people, the reality of those choices are not usually acknowledged consciously, at least not on a daily basis. Such people live according to habit, and exist within choices given to them through mainstream media and educational systems, economic necessity, and immediate need satisfaction. But, if we take time to reflect about it, we find that, in each given moment, we have the ability to choose how we want to perceive the world, and how we want to live in it. If we face up to them, we have fundamental choices to make about who we are in the world, what the world means to us, and what kind of world we want to help create.

I try to paint what I believe in, eliminating any marks or images which feel disingenuous, listening to what the painting is telling me to do rather than imposing my will on the work. In this way, it is my hope that the paintings aren’t driven self-consciously. They should emerge from a more enigmatic, less familiar place. In the process of painting, initiation, manipulation and removal of marks become one of the action and reaction. The paintings emerge slowly, one on top of the other, until they tell me I am done.

By creating art for me the most satisfying way of working is the combination of the abstract and the figure. The freedom of abstraction and the emotions that the figure can carry with the symbolic potential of the objective world and the possibilities abstraction presents in suggesting the unknown. My paintings operate somewhere between abstraction and the Secrets of Silence 40”x30”- Acrylic on Canvas Price: $ 3,000

It is hard to explain the how and the why. It is easy to make a formal analysis of the work and to position it in the great and diverse continuum of contemporary painting. My goal is to leave a cognitive space for viewers to fill in. I want my work to provide a chance to see things from different perspectives with the dimensions of the pieces viewers to become conscious of their physical relationship to the objects and scale proportion and humanity to elicit an emotional and intellectual response in my viewers. Painting is a wondrous journey for me.

Exploring areas of the world where I do not live and discovering doors that lead everywhere is fascinating to me. I particularly love the doors of Spain and took hundreds of door and ocean photos. I enjoyed the doors and arched flowers of “An Afternoon Stroll” through Puerto de Mogan de Gran Canaria. The path led us along a peaceful marina lined with brightly colored boats of all sizes. I felt that there was “A Boat for Everyone.” Most of these delightful boats were used for fishing and some just for pure pleasure of being on the water. It was a perfect day with December sun glinting off

the Atlantic Ocean, warming us and the resting boats as we walked. I loved the idea of the boats being “At Rest,” and was surprised and pleased to find a small boat named “Deniz,” Turkish for “sea;” with its “face” away from the dock, ready to go out to sea in a moment. We traipsed the causeway out into the ocean to find a delightful café where we had more than just a “Snack,” but a full lunch featuring fresh fish, of course! Memories of Gran Canaria always soften my day and bring the peace of the earth and ocean into my very being.

With no doubt, human experience in its infinite variety of shapes and forms is the ultimate cornerstone of any creative process. In a work of art this experience is distilled to its purest substance and when it strikes a note, our foundations are shaken. Throughout the ages artists have struggled to capture and preserve the “here and now” inner experience by composing time capsules in pieces of poetry, sculpture and painting or reviving its vitality in a dance, theater and musical performances. In my work I have attempted time and again to reconcile these two approaches into a coherent program. First, I have adopted the interplay of figurative and abstract imagery as a perspective that offers endless possibilities for creative explorations. I juxtapose realistic images with more expressive abstract brush strokes, thus challenging the viewer to anticipate unexpected metamorphoses form familiar forms to pure color. The fluidity of our sensations – surrealistically over-focused at times but also illusionary dreamy at others- is symbolized by departing from the obvious representations

without fully abandoning the figurative references. Second, from a conceptual viewpoint, these ideas are being amplified by the use of media that reflect the underlying premise. I apply a mixture of “incompatible” pigments of different viscosity and solubility that washes out firmly drawn contours, dissolves thick patches of paint and forms colorful sediments. These “conflicting” techniques evoke free interactions that spill from one image to the next, suggesting to the viewers that they should “complete” the art work by “connecting the dots” and “filling in the blanks” in their minds. The process may be analogous to a musical improvisation over classical scales – one could begin and finish at the same key but the journey always takes different paths. The end result, hopefully, is that the spectators will bring into life their own personalized versions of someone else’s art and will transform a visit to a gallery or a museum into an interactive and fulfilling experience- the one that some may say is the cornerstone of creativity.

Dunia Gatica (Mexico)

Juan Carlos Amaya (Colombia)

Noni Valentine (Puerto Rico)

nonitheartist@gmail.com

My art represents my deepest emotions, and transitioning moments in life, which are coined by my personal fears, experiences and success. My arrangements throughout my paintings in color, rhythm and movement are schematic, inviting the viewer to move into a space of speculation. I like to use a variety of subjects and processes in each painting, but I keep my methodology consistent. I layer familiar reproductions of visual and aural signs that showcase modernism as well as diversity.

My paintings are carefully sequenced to evoke my visions into conceptually vivid pieces, grouped around specific themes and meanings. I rely on my desire for beauty, poetry, seduction, and domination. Each and every single piece contains a fragment of myself; each piece is created to unearth myself. My pieces have become vessels to my brightest and darkest thoughts.
