While I was working in New York, I would fly down for Miami’s art fair season every winter and soon came to the realization that the arts did not have a prominent voice in the Downtown Miami - Brickell area; All of the art fairs were located either in Wynwood or Miami Beach. I identified with the area so deeply that I wanted to create an event that put this area on the art-world’s map. I did many site visits around Downtown Miami and the Miami Convention Center at the James L. Knight International Center was the ideal location to host an international art fair in this area. It was a large exhibition space worthy of a museum-level showcase in addition to being at the cusp of both the Downtown Miami and Brickell neighborhoods. As I began to take root in Miami, I opened a gallery in the Wynwood area, and recently opened the first waterfront gallery in the Arts and Entertainment District in Downtown Miami. The Miami River Art Fair is the first and only art fair in the Downtown Miami-Brickell area during the winter art fair season and will act as a catalyst to attract the elite art collectors, art professionals and art enthusiasts that have traveled to Miami from all corners of the globe to this luxurious new development. It is our mission to aid in the revitalization of the Lower Miami River area and its public greenways by creating a landmark cultural event during a time when Miami is at the center of the global art scene. Between the spectacular installations, sculptures, videos and exhibitor booths throughout the 30,000 square foot Riverfront Hall and the monumental sculpture displayed steps away on the Riverwalk Sculpture Mall, the Miami River Art Fair is a dazzling showcase of world-class artists. I welcome you to the cultural epicenter of the Americas and in this pioneering spirit, I thank you for your support during these decisive, first steps in breaking open the art fair scene to the Downtown Miami - Brickell areas and the Lower Miami River.

September 19, 2012 Dear Friends: As Mayor of the City of Miami, it is my distinct privilege to welcome you to the first edition of the Miami River Art Fair. The winter art fair season is a prosperous time for our city, a time when Miami is at the center of the global art scene. We welcome tens of thousands of international art professionals and art lovers, eager to see firsthand the work of modern masters and the contemporary cutting-edge in art. An important step to becoming a world renowned art city is the proliferation of art communities throughout Miami, each uniquely affected by their location. The Miami River Art Fair paves the way for the arts in our financial district as the pioneer art fair of the Downtown Miami - Brickell areas during the winter art fair season. The City of Miami welcomes the Miami River Art Fair as a herald for the revitalization of the Lower Miami River district, the city’s waterfront destination of the twenty-first century. As the fastest growing sector of our city, the Downtown Miami-Brickell area greets you with the warm embrace of luxury style and breathtaking views; a waterfront experience of culture, fine dining and world-class entertainment. On behalf of the City of Miami, I invite you to discover the new face of Miami’s waterfront and help ensure that the inaugural edition of the Miami River Art Fair is met with resounding success. Sincerely,
Tomás Regalado Mayor

Miami River Art Fair
The Historic Miami River
7 The Miami River is a singularly wondrous place. It is where all of the waters of an ancient geography come together. The Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean here at Biscayne Bay, where the great tributary of the massive river of grass extending down the Florida peninsula —also known as the Everglades— flows into the Bay. This is the place where an original civilization a cultural community that once ruled the Caribbean Sea from a two thousand year old river-head at Miami cultivated the arts. The Tequesta Indians ruled the Carib nations from the mouth of what today is known as the Miami River (their word for sweet water) and where the original City of Miami was founded. The tribe, long extinct, left its footprint at what is today known as the Miami Circle, where the River meets the Bay. Today, that circle of waters joining together is the birthplace of modern-day Miami. The Miami River is rejoining its past as a new cultural epicenter of the arts. This City, now at the hemispheric center of the continents of North and South America, is the center of a new 21st Century art hub of the Americas. Now, for the first time, the cradle of Miami’s beginnings will host its first landmark event during the winter art fair season.
