The first line of that poem, so widely-known, holds truth that can be found every spring. A special kind of rebirth takes place on earth: from the cold, dark, dead winter comes a warmer air, tentative at first and overpowered by violent rains, but which ultimately produces beautiful flowers. These flowers hold not only beauty, but also symbolism. Everyone has a favorite spring flower, but how much do you really know about your flower? Anemones, not to be confused with sea anemones, are small flowers that look almost cartoon like. They can be found in variations of warm colors such as pink, purple, and red. They were historically believed to ward off illness and protect against evil, and come the end of winter, many people like to plant anemones in anticipation for spring and the rid of winter illness. It’s no surprise this flower’s meaning is expectation and anticipation, everyone is ready for the new season. Another flower that symbolizes positive

anticipation is peonies. This robust plant covers bushes and is planted for good fortune, wealth, happy marriages, and romance. Peonies are also a symbol of India and can be found in bountiful flower arrangements, such as those created by Maison Des Fleurs. The legend surrounding peonies says they were named after Paeon who was physician to the gods and used the roots to help soothe the pain of women in childbirth. What this has to do with the symbolism is beyond me, but the more you know. Like peonies, the rest of spring’s native flowers have to do with romance, except for gerberas. These flowers symbolize innocence, beauty, and purity, and are used to create Feng Shui. Each gerbera color symbolizes something else besides the main meaning. Yellow means cheerful and grounding, red is for exuding passion and energy, pink is sweet and calming, orange is full of life and health, and white is used to soothe the mind. Tulips also have a general symbolism, perfection

“And if all the showers turned to flowers On that rainy April day, Would all the flowers turn to showers In the sunny month of May?”

of love, but each color means something different as well. Red is for romance, yellow is for friendship, and multi-colored tulips symbolize the beauty of one’s eyes. Tulips happen to be one of the most popular flowers which is understandable considering they represent love in two of the most important forms. Carnations are the next flower to not really have a history behind them, but each color does mean something different. White symbolizes pure love and luck, light red symbolizes admiration, dark red symbolizes deep love and affection, and pink symbolizes a mother’s undying love, because apparently pink carnations first appeared on earth from the Virgin Mary’s tears. Carnations are similar looking to peonies and dahlias could be their cousin. Dahlias were historically used to make insulin for diabetics, and each color means something different. Use yellow dahlias to tell someone I am happy you love me and multicolored dahlias to tell them I think of you constantly. So much romance in spring, it’s wonderful. The final flower found in spring is the lilac, one of my personal favorites. In Greek mythology, it’s said that a nymph named Syringa captivated Pan, the god of forests and fields, and in order to escape his affections, she turned herself into a lilac flower. Today, purple lilacs are used to express the first emotions of love and white lilacs are for

youthful innocence. All of these spring flowers are enough to brighten anyone’s day and bring a sense of refreshment into all lives, and each symbolism gives them even more beauty. To truly enjoy spring, go outside and embrace the beauty. Plant a flower garden or just explore the nearest garden near you. Surrounding your life with beauty is the best way to live, so take advantage of the most beautiful season and smell the roses (literally).

It’s 80 degrees and sunny outside. This is called “Baseball weather.” And what better way to celebrate this great weather than to go out and watch a highly-talented baseball team at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium throughout the spring season. Charlotte, coached by Loren Hibbs in his 25th season with the program, is in the midst of their hardest schedule in program history and has gotten off to one of their best starts under coach Hibbs. The 49ers, as of the start of March, has the hardest strength of schedule in the nation, including the nation’s fifth best RPI. This basically means that Charlotte is playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation and they are still finding ways to win almost every game. They took 2-out-of-3 from Big 12’s West Virginia, almost took down No.4-ranked South Carolina on the road and did take down the nations’ sixth best team, NC State, 6-5 on the road. Charlotte has their work cut out for them throughout the rest of the spring season, traveling to No.10-ranked East Carolina and then 8

having to jump right into Conference USA play, which is one of the toughest college baseball conferences in the nation. Throughout opening weekend against WVU, Charlotte saw just over 4,100 (3 consecutive sellouts) people come out and support the team at Hayes Stadium, making for a great atmosphere for the boys to play in. The team fed off the crowd when times got tough and then used the crowd’s intensity when they hit home runs and struck out batters to solidify home field advantage. Charlotte is currently being led by junior-standout Brett Netzer, ECU transfer Jackson Mims and T.J. Nichting on the offensive end. With these players leading the team in batting average, nearly batting .400, Charlotte has had home runs from six of their nine everyday starters. The strength of the pitching staff has been as strong as ever to start the season, with veteran and new arms lighting up the new radar gun on the scoreboard.

There will always be excuses not to come out for students in college that have to juggle school work, food, relationships and social lives. This is very understandable, but Hayes Stadium cuts right through those reasons. School work - Eduroam wi-fi works at Hayes Stadium so if you need to do homework on your laptop or study, the Hayes is student-friendly. Food - From Bojangles, to Philly Cheese steaks, to hot dogs, there are tons of choices at the concession stands that make for a great meal. Also, you can use declining balance for food and drinks to keep you from putting a dent in your wallet.

Relationships - What better way to take out your significant other than to take them to a free baseball game. There is no charge for entry at baseball games for students and there is no bad seat in the house. Social lives - There are tons of students that fill up the lower bowl at Hayes Stadium and with the spring weather coming around, there are likely to be even more. While yelling at the opposing team and umpires, it is easy to meet other fans that have the same interests as you and could always be the start of a great friendship. So come on out and enjoy a beautiful spring day at the ball field with the rest of Niner Nation.

If I am on campus just doing some homework, one of the best things about spring is being able to sit outside and enjoy the weather while getting work done. I also look forward to being able to wear sundresses and wedges, and a lot of the styles in general that come back out during the spring season. It is also cruise season, and I tend to go on cruises during this time of the year because this is the best weather to take a vacation in. Lastly my favorite thing about spring is definitely my birthday!

As the new weather of spring moves in gradually, we find ourselves sniffling, sneezing and coughing up the new air. But how and why does this happen? What can be done to prevent it, and if we do find ourselves under the weather, what are some home remedies to help you feel better for classes? The biggest reason for why we get sick in the spring is because when the temperature changes, it allows for new germs and bacteria to flourish, causing a spike in colds and flu symptoms all around campus. But never fear! Here are some easy and quick ways to help you feel your best, even when you feel not so great. Steam your face. Stay with me here, this is a great way to open up your sinuses. The hot steam helps break down the gunk in your nose and throat, allowing you to breathe more, and who doesn’t want that when they are sick? I recommend a clothes steamer or if you don’t have one, heat up water in a microwave safe bowl for 4 minutes. Put a towel over 12

your head as you allow your face to sit above the water, so it traps in the heat. Add a few drops of essential oils to really give your sinuses a deep clean. Drink hot tea. This trick has always worked for me. The heat from the tea, the antioxidants and natural nutrients help you fight off the bacteria in your body. Personally I recommend green tea, and adding a little bit of honey helps to sooth a sore throat. Another tip, if you are looking for a little extra relief from a sore throat, take a spoonful of honey, it’s as simple as that! REST. This is a word us college students don’t hear a lot. Sleep is one of the best things for a cold. It allows your

body to rest, so it can fight off the cold faster. This may mean skipping one of your classes (only if you are allowed sick days), taking off a day from work or trying to fall asleep earlier. Plus, who doesn’t like staying in bed all day? Take Vitamins. Even if it’s just chewable vitamin C, taking extra supplements adds more to the fight against the cold. If you’re not one for swallowing horse-sized pills, there are other alternatives to get in your daily dose. I recommend the Naked juice blends, in particular the C-boosted Mighty Mango flavor. This bad boy is filled with lots of vitamins and minerals, as well as 1000 percent of your daily value of vitamin C.

Spicy foods. This one is not scientifically proven, but in all my experiences, it works. If you are a fan of spicy foods, I recommend eating lots of it. The heat from the spices helps to break down the gunk in your sinuses and usually makes your nose run, to help get everything out of your body. So pull out your wallets, run over to Moe’s on Moe’s Monday and get you the hottest salsa they have. Stay hydrated. Remember to always keep liquids in your body, that way your body doesn’t get dehydrated, and it can fight off the cold faster. These remedies will in no way cure you, but help to ease the sickness so your body can fight of this and other colds. If you also find your symptoms worsening, head over to your doctor or the Student Health Center here on campus. They have great doctors and will help you out with whatever you need. Stay healthy Niners!

Ingredients

1 ½ tbsp. Pepper 1 ½ tbsp. Salt 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tsp Paprika 1 Large Lemon ¾ Stick of Butter 10oz Boneless Fillets of Atlantic Salmon Fresh Asparagus Photos by Candice Kelly

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 425o Fahrenheit 2. Wash fish with warm water, make sure to remove scales if there are any. Place skin down on a large ungreased cookie sheet. 4. Wash the asparagus. Remove the ends, they should break off easily. Pat dry and lay across cookie sheet. 3. In a small bowl combine salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder. Sprinkle generously across both sides of the salmon and asparagus. 4. Chop butter into 6-8 inch sized squares and lay them on top of the salmon and asparagus. Cut lemon into slices and do the same. 5. Cook for 15-25 minutes or until the fish is fully cooked. Serve and enjoy.

I never thought I would like asparagus until I tried it in this dish, and now it’s one of my favorite veggies. The flavors of the lemon and spices soak into the vegetables to give them a savory, buttery taste. I like to add a tab more seasoning than the recipe calls for just to make sure the flavors really pop. Sometimes I like to add shrimp to this recipe since it absorbs flavor well. If you’re not a fan of salmon, tilapia works well as a substitute although it is thinner, so the cook time may not be as long. This is a great, healthy meal for those that are tired of eating out and want a nice home cooked alternative. It serves about two people.

Spring is known for its nice weather, plenty of flowers, and bounty of fruits and vegetables that get people excited and flood Instagram feeds. While a picture of an avocado cut in half or a basket of strawberries will probably receive likes, there are more ways to eat spring fruits and veggies that will likely result in even more Instagram likes. Here you’ll find different ways to eat various foods that you could end up enjoying. To begin, we’ll look at the Spring Super Vegetable: asparagus. This is one of those foods that you either really love, really hate or like but stay away from because of the smell. Instead of shying away from this veggie, try wrapping it in bacon to enjoy Asparagus Bacon Bundles. The cook time is approximately 30 minutes and is sure to please; bacon truly makes everything better. If you’re looking for something a little less greasy, try Italian Asparagus. This creamy, cheesy dish takes 23 minutes to make and can act as a great appetizer or rich lunch. If you just want to use asparagus as your side, roasting the greens with New Potatoes is a great way to go. This option is the lengthier one, with the cook time being one hour, but it’s a great side to go with a chicken or pasta meal. New Potatoes are, in my opinion, the best potatoes. Every variation of potato is good, but there’s something about these small, red potatoes that gets the taste buds going. If you’re a New York native, you’re probably familiar with Syracuse Salt Potatoes. This is a great side dish that only takes 40 minutes to make, and a great option if you really hate asparagus. Once you try Syracuse Salt Potatoes, I promise they’ll be a staple in every spring meal. Moving on to fruit, we’ll begin with apricots. This subtly sweet fruit is delicious by itself, but even more delicious when baked into a scone. Apricot Scones only take 50 minutes to bake and are perfect for a light dessert or an afternoon 16

snack. If you want something simpler but still sweet, Roasted Apricots with Ricotta and Honey only takes 25 minutes to make and is a delicious snack. Even those who don’t like honey, like me, will enjoy this simple treat to follow a wonderful Strawberry Spinach Salad. Strawberries: The Superfruit of Spring. As soon as the warmer months roll around, everyone falls head over heels for this red fruit. They’re good alone, they’re good in salad, and they’re good in pastries. If you have a spare hour and a half, try making Strawberry and Cream Cheese Banana Bread. You can never go wrong with strawberry and banana. Really, you can never go wrong with strawberries in general. Finally, the fruit that is also my one true love, avocado. I put avocado on everything; burritos, salads, sandwiches, you name it. Even eating it alone is delicious. If you’re looking for a good lunch, try a Turkey Bacon and Avocado Grilled Cheese. It only takes seven minutes to make and is sure to melt in your mouth. If you’re a vegetarian, try substituting the bacon with tomato. For a quicker option, putting avocado on a slice of toast works just as well. This is a great breakfast or snack and is always sure to please. Add some salt and pepper and you’re good to go. Using these suggestions, it should be easy to enjoy the fruits and vegetables of the season once spring rolls around. If you happen to dislike every option stated, you can always opt for the classic Fruit Salad comprised of blueberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapple, and papaya, or you can just check Pinterest for more options. All meals stated can be found on Pinterest with their recipes, but don’t be afraid to shake each up a bit and add some of what you think will make the dish tastier. Indulge in the foods spring has to offer and hopefully one of these suggestions changes your life – for the better.

We’ve all been there: we pick a resolution at the beginning of the year and by spring, it’s all a distant memory of January and February. But what can be done to make sure that doesn’t happen? Here are some tips that will help keep you on track with your New Year’s goals. 1. Make a goals chart. This idea seems very childish, but this is probably the best thing you can do for yourself if you want to stay on track. Take a fun colored piece of paper, write down all your goals for the year and post it somewhere in your living space where you know you will see it. Or make reminders on your phone, and never turn them off so you’ll see them constantly. That way you feel more obligated to continue with them. If you’re trying to correct a bad habit, the little annoyances will help you remind you of the problem so it’s easier for your brain to unlearn. 2. Find a motivation. As springtime comes, you might find it easier to go outside and be more active, if that is your personal resolution. Find that thing that will make you want to continue on with your task at hand. Find a friend to help, reward yourself when you do well or whatever you see fit to keep you on track. 3. Find the fun in it. It may be hard, but there is always something fun in everything you do. If you plan on losing weight with your friends, have dinner parties and have everyone cook low-calorie

meals. If you want to stop cursing, start a swear jar and whenever you notice that you have stopped and continued with it, reward yourself with the cash. Who doesn’t like extra money? 4. Keep track of everything. For this tip, I recommend bullet journaling. Bullet journaling is a journal that keeps everything organized for you, in one little booklet. Keep your to-do lists, a copy of your goals chart, notebook, diary, habit charts and graphs. This little booklet will keep you on track with your goals and resolutions, as well as your tasks and everyday thoughts. It can also be a therapy book, where you write your thoughts about your resolutions and how it’s affecting you. 5. Be patient. Change doesn’t happen overnight. As much as we want it to, it takes time. Keeping a positive and patient attitude will help you feel the change happening. My father always asks me whenever I was worried or impatient, “Hailey, how do you eat an elephant?” and I respond with “one bite at a time.” This is a metaphor, meaning that to get a task done, it takes time and knocking off little tasks within the project will help you finish the whole thing faster than you think. No matter what your task, goal or resolution is, it’s easy with a little motivation and determination. Remember these tips if you ever find yourself slipping on your New Year’s Resolution this spring, and they will help keep you on track for success.

Travel is fun year-round, but doing it in spring is the best. Everyone thinks summer is the time to travel, but in most cases, it’s way too hot and humid, to actually enjoy your vacation. Spring, however, is just warm enough with a breeze to cool you down. If you look past the allergies and frequent rain showers, spring is filled with a bright sun, colorful plants, and the perfect time for a fun-filled trip to our nation’s capital: Washington, D.C. Here are some fun things to do in the city during springtime. First and foremost, it is vital you visit the National Mall. Most people travel to D.C. and head straight for the White House, but in my opinion, the National Mall holds the most iconic monuments. This strip of land consists of the stretch between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol including the Washington Monument, Reflection Pool, Constitution Avenue and an abundance of memorials, gardens and museums. It’s amazing to see history in real life, so make sure you don’t miss out on this wonder. With the beautiful weather of springtime, walking around won’t be so bad either. Next, go and visit the White House. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It is truly spectacular to see where almost every one of our Presidents has lived. Despite your thoughts and opinions on our current President and the fact that you have to stand behind an eleven-foot fence that’s positioned seemingly 1,000 yards away, seeing the White House in person will really make someone feel patriotic. Due to the beautiful spring weather, the street may be crowded, but at least you only have to dodge people and not cars (unless they’re official cars). Finally, for a true spring vacation, check out Old Town Alexandria. This cute, historic town is enough to have people coming back for more. Lining King Street are restaurants, shops, 20

and boutiques of all kinds. The mile-long street is lined with trees, people, bikes, and dogs, and it ends at the Potomac River. At the base of the harbor, you can take the Potomac Riverboat and ride around the river until you’re brought back to the edge of Old Town. You may also be brought back to a Water Taxi across from the National Harbor, and this place is just as magnificent as Old Town except it’s more modern. If you decide to take the Potomac RiverBoat ride, just know frozen yogurt will be waiting for you at Sweet Frog, the perfect treat for a perfect spring day. Using these three tips and the many more attractions D.C. has to offer, you are sure to have a great vacation. Spring flowers will make your pictures more aesthetically pleasing, and the warm sun will make your experience more enjoyable, so get out there and enjoy our nation’s capital!

Spring time is here, which means it is bathing suit season. Whether you need a bathing suit for your tropical Spring Break destination or since North Carolina’s heat is back. A trend in the swimsuit world that hit us last year, and is becoming even more popular this year, is the website “Cupshe.com.” All of those cute bathing suits you have seen on Pinterest had to come from somewhere, and the answer is this website. It is full of in style bathing suits to match with extremely cheap prices. The pros for this website would definitely have to be the prices. You can get a matching top and bottom for anywhere between 18-22 dollars. We all know swimsuits can get very expensive. Pink by Victoria’s Secret bathing suits for a matching top and bottom can be around 80 dollars. Cupshe.com is great if you are on the hunt for something cute to wear and also inexpensive. This website as well keeps up with the latest trends. A lot of these bathing suits are originally pretty pricy, but this website makes sort of

knock-off versions of these suits and sells them for cheaper. But, they look pretty much identical. They have all the new styles like, high-waisted bikinis, halter styles, tank bathing suits, and the comeback of one pieces. They have such a wide variety of swimwear that you will most definitely find something that fits what you are looking for. Lastly, a huge plus, is that Cupshe updates their bathing suits almost every day. They add new ones constantly to their website that you will always be in the latest trends. This website is pretty great if you are obsessed with swimsuits like I am. If you like to collect a ton of bikinis to show off in the summer, Cupshe is a great source to go to. All the bathing suits on trend are up there and you can show off your style like everyone else. There are other popular sites like this one as well. Wish.com and Zaful. com are similar to this one. They have cheap swim suits that match today’s popular trends. But, with my constant search for cheap bikinis, I have found Cupshe is the absolute best.
