Gallery and Garage September, 2013 Individual Work
Introduction The building site is located in the Haizhu District, Guangzhou. Next to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. The land reserved for project planning use about 7,000 sq.m. It must include 9,000 sq.m to 10,000 sq.m garage ( approximately 200 parkings) with passive air exhaust. A building of 1,500 sq.m for Arts exhibition.
Aims This project will be a par t of the GAFA campus. The purpose of the gallery is mainly for the young teacher of GAFA to exhibit their works, giving them opportunities to communicate with the public.
Tutor: Lam Lee
Analysis The building site is located at the intersection of two main roads where is a junction of two metro lines as well. There are two roads, one is Jiangnan Avenue (with 12 lanes), the other is Changgang Road (with 8 lanes), which brings a massive traffic to these area, especially during the rush hours. On the other hand, here is the transfer station of two metro lines. Because of the traffic improvement, a lot of new bulidings built here, including a 52 floors outstanding skyscraper. The massive vehicle and visitor flowrate makes this area becoming another new commercial center of the Haizhu District. Most of the buildings surrounding the project are build in a gerneral shape, which are essentially base on the shape of rectangle.
Difficulties First one was the terrain. The building site trangle-like, and each ange has different altitude. The second one, which is the most important one, is one of the metro exit is lacated at the center of the building site. And because of the building ordinance, the exit can't be removed, and it can't be sheltered from constructions either. In addition a 7m-wide footpath must be left to connect the exit and the pavement.
Concept The building of this project requires a clear function. It is built for the young teachers and the young artists. Inspired by the twine, the general public and the academy like the two ends of a rope. Both of them has its distinctive parts and connections. A gallery just like a knot between public and academy, where makes them communicate with the other. Academy could show its works to public here while the public could easily give feedback to the academy. Accordingly, the design of the gallery starts from the concept of "kont".
The building site is surrounded by a various of buildings, for instance, skyscraper, hotel, hospital. Massive vehicle and visitor flowrate makes this area especially busy with loud noises.
Inside the GAFA campus, the first impression is the plants and the building with red bricks. It's peaceful and totally different from the environment outside.
Sketch Following the concept "knot", sketch get start from two interlaced circulars. The gallery should have a special characteristic, which is seen as public form by artists, and felt as artistic by the general public. The gallery could be seen as floating in the air and create shadow as a normal tree does. Because it's located in the southern China, double glazing could avoid the strong solar rays efficiently. Now that the metro exit can't be removed, I decide to let the exit become a part of the project. It could be an excellent stage for the metro vistors to be affected by the gallery.
Plan The site-plan is base on the metro exit as the center of annulus shape. Landscape forms emanates from the center as well. Because of the sculpture exhibition requires a 9m-height space, the exhibition hall and the main entrance are settled on the first floor.
Galleries, lounge, storage room, office and conference room are settled on the second floor, while first floor is almost empty and creating a sense of floating for the general public, which could clearly distinguished from the surrounding environment.
Inspried by the construction fo ring spring, it's possible to create a continuous construction. The form of the section can balance forces well.
A more practical construction form is chosen to replace the original concept model.
Chimney effect is considered as a method to create passive air exhaust instead of mechanical exhaust. Sunlight heat the air in the center of the gallery, and heated air including those in the garage will get rising, and air cooled by surronding landscape will get into garage instead.
The ring spring shape gallery chooses coated colour glass as its inner facade. I chose an image which impress me most of the GAFA campus, after that I pixelate the photo by 20% each time to extract several colours. And these colours are used to random coat the glass facade.
Inspired by the traditional Cantonese House, the gallery set up two facades, the inner one will provide two functions. One is avoiding the strong sunlight in the afternoon heating the gallery; the other function is that it can be rotated, it's a window between the outside world and the gallery, and the facilities for exhibitions as well.
Transformation of Old buildings
Academic Shared Revitalization Projects of Model village i n Sun Yat-Sen University May, 2012 Individual Work
Introduction The Model village is located in the Sun Yat-Sen University, Haizhu District, Guangzhou. All of the buildings was built before 1930s, although one of them was destroyed, there remains 13 aged buildings. In the long duration of service, most of the buildings was extended by the users, some of them kepts the original style while some didn't. Recently, there isn't any body living in the village any more, and this area become more and more quite and peaceful. Only a few people passed by from time to time.
Aims The purpose of the project is to activate this model village making it attrcative and keeping its peaceful at the meanwhile.

Concepts in Guangzhou, there have been many projects of old building transformation. Most of them are transformed into a commercial area or for entertainments. Even one of the buildings in this model village has been transformed into a shop selling souvenirs of Sun Yat-Sen University. In this case, I ask myself if there is any possibility to plan it for academic activities, particularly in this university capus, making the village as the representative of "MODEL" as it used to be.
Strart From the Greens Not only surrounding the model village, but also inside the village, it easy to see various plants & trees. Different kinds of trees with various height, it's also the most important factor which makes this site peaceful. Aged trees and old buildings closely link to each other. No matter which factor loses, the character of the model village will disapper.
Inspiration of bricks Red buildings are the other important factor in the model village. The mode of brick construction was just right for the concept I want to present in this site that nature and buildings closely combine and the theroy of breaking up the whole into parts. After researching all the 13 red buildings, I chose Flemish brick station as the typical mode to use in the project.
Using the pattern of Flemish brick station, I test different scales to suit the site. And the 150 times was totally suitable for the village site and easily to creat a lot of pathways for people to go through.
The Pathways
The massive trees like shelters provide enough shadow and quiet keeping the model village out from the noise. Even if there will be many visitors here in the future, it can still keep its unique character. On the other hand, the interesting observation will be provided with different height of the terrain and the plants.
Creating new area These area shall be a place open to the public and without any consraint. I asked myself again, what should these area be? ----Is it a galler y to exhibit therir academic achievement? ----Is it a place just for a stop and rest? ----Is it a individual courtyard? How to display its openness? How to connect the exterior and the interior?
Mode I
Spaces of exhibition mainly display to the passerby
Mode II
Spaces of exhibition both for the visitors indoors and outdoors
Mode I Mode II Mode III
Mode III
Spaces between two red buildings, mainly for the host of the buildings
Passersby are considered as the primary factor, because the exhibition area is close to the human flows. Using large walls which can be rotated to change the space scale.
Passersby are considered as important as visitors indoors. Large doors which can be rotated are widely used to change the space functions and increasing the communication between the exterior and the interior.
Compare to Model I and Model II, Model III is in the middle of two red buildings, it is much more individual and far from human flow. It will be a chance for visitors to explore.
Night Scene The new space built with transparent meterial will be the center of sightseeings while it is lighted up at night. A strong comparison between modern and aged, light and heavy will present.
Exhibition Area A large Rotate-able wall provide more possible for the exhibition and a convenient way for public to enjoy.
Whole Model Village Perpective View The whole site is broken up into parts by a lot of pathways. Passerby can easy to go inside the village. Plants and Red buildings are conserved keeping the village peaceful, which is its character attracting visitors.

Introduction In this four week course, actually it is not teaching the specific architecture construction, but the method of design. It a course to cultivate divergent thinking, focus on the thinking process of a architect design rather than the result. It is an endless process just depend on how much you go into the detail.
Aims A project can be vavirous different solutions, and massive possiblities. Methods is what we study in this project.
Final Present As a result, we make a Flash program to present o u r s t u d y p r o c e s s of what we did in the past four weeks. On the right, these are the screen prints of our flash program Tutor: Kai Hartramp
Hifo Lu
Mind Management In the process, we use photos and videos with few scripts to record our thinking process and conversations. In addition, we use mind management to manage the process.
First week Research & experiment In thist course, each group has a topic to go on study. Our topic is about human body. In the first week we do research and Experiments of the human body. At the beginning, we choose thress directions: hair, bone and muscle. Most of the time we pay attentention to the body structure, and always fasten on the problems of construction. As time goes by, it's more and more difficult to go into the details. Therefore, It's time for us to clam down and consider what we are going to do next.
Second week Focus After the first week research, we make a decision, just focusing on the bone and muscle, which our group interest most, picking up their characters to make a combination. Based on this idea, we make a lot of possible models and come up with a bisic simple unit.
Third week Possible Sketch Af ter making the simple constrction unit, we have to consider where the model can be used. Each one in our group work on sketch to present the possibilities. Af ter that we collect the ideas together and classify them into 10 derections, we deside stadium will be the direction which we go on study.
By using the baisc unit, we create a larege combination. And then we use the construction to set up a form which has a sense of innervation.
Fourth week Modes & Expectation In this week we find out more possibilitie about the flexible construction. It can be lots of parts of a stadium with strong innervation.
Expectation We create a 3D model of the construction based on the real model we have made. And we conbine the model and several photos of real world, imagining the scene of flexible construction exisiting in our life.
The Sound of Rossano Art Intervention In Rossano,Italy December, 2009 Individual Work
Introduction Rossano, 37.760 inhabitants, province of Cosenza. Rossano stands on eastern side of Sibari plain, between Sila mountains and the Jonic coast. The territory presents different geologic situations, with different characteristics (rocks, clays, sands), corresponding to different types of flora, even though landscape is deeply characterized by fruit and olive trees crop, and in the area next to the coast there are a lot of poplars. This project is to found out more possibilities to conservate and develop the Rossano old town with soft art.
Aims 1. Creating new landmarks 2. Linking Imaginaries 3. Sense expressions
Directions 1. art into space 2. big ideas, small buildings 3. land art
Tutor: Hong Lin

Problems The first problem in Rossano for the travelling visitors is there isn't any significant indicator. Even though there are some famous tourist spots but it is hard to find there since you get into the old town because of the massive pathways. According to this situaiton, I consider setting a indicator as a landmark at the entrance. I choose sound or voice as my sense expressions. I find speaker for my reference. And I quick sketch a shape of the loud-speaker to monomer the formation of radialorented devices.
In order to link the two plans, the sculpture will be turn upside down and put at the entrance of the tunnel alone. It’s the purposeto give the people who first enter the old city a good impressionof ROSSANO; Giving up signing the number on the streetlights, usethe shapeas aturn-over loud-speaker. It can make the people concentrateon listeningto the old town. In anotherway, it will be the echoes to the sculpture at the entrance "Mother" device to ROSSANO Old City Position to determine their own attractions with the ground Location of the point of contact
ROSANO Tourist Spots map
The three "mother" form grass-mode
Model-making process Tool: tissue, wire meshes,Latex, acrylic paints, brushes, pliers, LEDs,3v battery Steps: 1 to wire plastic 2 prave the tissue on the wire frame with latex (2-3 times) 3 coated with white acrylic paint 4 coated with white latex 5 positioning, installation of light
Auditory imagery link Located at the tunnel entrance to the main unit through the ground into the shape an d distrib u tio n of the monomer unit in the city constitute a form of a corner on the link, as if a great device, like the old city throughout Rossano,People go where the device can be aware of the existence, in fact, form a new landmark
