2021
WELCOME Welcome to the 18th Annual Donor Social! We are honoured to celebrate the incredible impact your support has had on our students, especially over this past year as we have all had to adapt to shifting social, cultural and economic realities in our communities across Northern Ontario. Over this past year, our donors and supporters have helped increase the opportunity for critical financial assistance for our students with the establishment of six additional donor-funded awards and bursaries, totalling over $110,000. Although this year’s celebration looks a little different, we understand the importance of connecting our donors and students. It is these connections that empower and build confidence in our students to inspire them to follow their dreams. As we look to the future, we will continue to explore ways to deepen the connection between students, faculty, staff, donors and supporters, so we may all work together to equip our communities with the knowledge and resources needed to adapt to the complexities of the world today. On behalf of our team and students here at Nipissing, thank you for all of your continued dedication and support. Warmest,
Cristin Director, External Relations

GRATEFUL STUDENTS Amanda Genah – Rotary Club of Nipissing Award My name is Amanda and I am a fifth-year student at Nipissing University. I am currently enrolled in the Concurrent Education Program. This six-year program has allowed me to explore my passion for science, biology in particular, through the first four years of my education at Nipissing. This year, and next, will focus on the field of education and, after just one semester, I can say with confidence that teaching is the correct path for me. Since beginning this program in 2016, I have not only fallen in love with my program and Nipissing, but I have also come to love North Bay. I have embraced the city and everything it has to offer and I feel as though I am a member of the North Bay community. I hope to graduate in 2022 with this degree in addition to my Bachelor of Science with an Honours Specialization in Biology, a minor in Chemistry, and a certificate in Forestry Conservation and Resource Management. In terms of career aspirations, my goal is to work with youth and to have a positive impact on their development and understanding of the world. Ideally, I hope to begin my career teaching abroad. I am considering teaching careers within Ontario, as well as the environmental education pathway. Long term, I plan to obtain a Master’s of Education and to potentially obtain qualifications for the Principal position. As a first-generation student, I am beyond grateful to be able to attend university. I am the eldest of three in my family and I am honoured to have paved the way for my two younger siblings who are now attending university as well. While I receive some support through government funding, I am my sole financial supporter. I have worked part-time throughout my time at Nipissing in addition to working throughout the summers. Support from donors such as yourself significantly lessens the burden I face in accessing education and motivates me to continue working towards my goals and to give back where possible. The financial support offered by the school and generous donors such as the Rotary Club of North Bay makes it possible for me to pursue higher education. While my parents encourage my educational endeavours, they are unable to provide the necessary financial support. With that said, they have always taught me to appreciate the opportunities I am given and to pay them forward. It is with that mentality that I accept this award and continue to work towards my degrees. I am immensely grateful to your organization and words truly cannot express my gratitude.

GRATEFUL STUDENTS Haley Gignac – Dr. Herb & Mrs. Geetie Brown Award in Nursing My name is Haley Gignac and I am currently in my second year of the BScN program at Nipissing University. I have grown up in North Bay and am proud to be attending a school in my home town. I am a person who truly enjoys learning new things and exploring what our world has to offer. I have completed two mission trips to Costa Rica with the Duke Of Edinburgh program which has inspired me to want to pursue a career in the medical profession where I can continue to help others. I am very passionate about the career path that I have chosen and believe that the medical profession is one of the greatest careers in the world. Upon graduating, my goal is to work at the North Bay Regional Hospital to gain experience and learn my role as a nurse. My hope is to work in the Emergency Department where I can gain useful skills that will prepare me for my dream to work with Nurses Without Borders. It will be my dream to graduate from nursing school and be able to help people around the world who do not have the privileges that our Canadian healthcare system has afforded myself and many others. As a proud Canadian nurse I aspire to bring my knowledge acquired from Nipissing University to provide care to others. Like many other students, this pandemic has greatly affected my ability to save money that would typically go toward the cost of post secondary. This award helped me to pay for my tuition this semester and I am profoundly grateful that I was chosen as a recipient. Awards benefit students to help offset the cost of tuition, books and school supplies. It is difficult to express the feeling of gratitude that comes when you learn that you have been chosen for an award that offers monetary compensation. This kind of recognition brings forth a feeling of a job well done and a pat on the back that students truly appreciate. During this time of increased stress and anxiety brought on by Covid-19, this generous gift was received with an even greater appreciation. As I work toward preparing myself to become a part of the medical community, I aspire to one day become committed and as deeply involved as I have witnessed from our front line workers during this unprecedented time.

GRATEFUL STUDENTS Amanda Wagner – J. Wesley McNutt Environmental Science Award I am completing my final semester at Nipissing University this year, graduating with an Honours Double Major in Environmental Geography and Social Welfare and Development. I am both excited and sorry to see my time at Nipissing coming to an end, as I have had many incredible experiences here, including participating in an international exchange, and writing a research thesis on climate change in the developed world. I would love to work for the United Nations, and do some charity work, especially as it relates to children, women, and the environment. I fundamentally believe that climate change and access to education are some of the most pressing issues of our time, and I sincerely want to be a part of enabling a better, and safer future. One day, I would also like to start my own organization rooted in community development that is sensitive to local culture and sustainability, which will allow me to support people in various areas in ways which will continue to grow in line with environmental wellbeing. This award has given me incredible support this year, and I am so thankful for it. This award has ultimately afforded me some financial space to reduce my worries about paying for school, and opened up some time for me to work on my school work to the best of my ability. Awards such as this one are so completely appreciated to students, and also gift such incredible relief to us as we struggle to find a balance between work and school. Paying for school can feel like a daunting task in the best of times, and donations such as this one provide students like myself with such incredible relief, it is so appreciated. This past year has been overwhelming for every single person, and try as we may to get through this tough time, it is these acts of connection and support that truly empower one to believe that things will be okay. Thank you so very much.
