Dr. Dave Marshall’s Biography Dave Marshall was born in Orangeville Ontario and raised in Guelph and Fergus, Ontario. He attended the University of Western Ontario where he received a BSc in Chemistry in 1970. Over the next three years, he taught Physics, Math, Health and Physical Education and Music in high schools in Collingwood and Sault St Marie, the last year as a full time music (band) teacher. After leaving the classroom, Dr. Marshall completed an MEd in Educational Technology at the University of Alberta and then spent two years teaching on Baffin Island, and another two years in the Caribbean as Director of Curriculum for St. Lucia, before returning to the University of Alberta to do a PhD in Educational Administration. In 1985, after three years as a Professor at the University of Manitoba and two years with the Manitoba government, Dave accepted the Deanship of the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University College. He became president of Nipissing in 1990 and led the institution to full university status in 1992. He remained as Nipissing’s President until 2003 when he accepted the Presidency of Mount Royal College and the challenge of leading that institution to full university status in 2009. Dr. Marshall officially retired on July 1, 2011 as one of the longest, continuous serving university presidents in Canadian history. He has received honorary degrees from Mount Royal University, Nipissing University and Sheridan College. While over the years Dr. Marshall was recognized and received numerous awards for specialties, (small schools, administration in developing areas, computers in education, college-university relationships) the circumstances of his jobs led him to become one of Canada’s leading spokespersons on institutional change, managing financial sustainability in university budgets, labour relations, and effective undergraduate education/ undergraduate universities. Dr. Marshall still writes and speaks on these topics. More recently Dr. Marshall has consulted on institutional (post secondary) transformation, spoken to national organizations on institutional differentiation in Canada, assisted with University collective bargaining, participated on University executive searches and designed Presidential retention strategies. However, these are mostly short distractions from his life in retirement where he enjoys every day with Sheila, his partner of 49 years, along with playing blues/country harp, writing bad novels, fishing and kayaking at his cottage on Lake Talon, lowering his golf handicap, travelling and most importantly, spoiling four grandchildren. His next project is teaching university presidents how to retire.
