LIVES CHANGED Molly Bowman – Muskoka Region Entrance Award (2019-2020) The Muskoka Entrance Award honours a new student from the Muskoka region that is preparing to start their journey at Nipissing University. Molly Bowman is a first year student studying Child and Family Studies, with the hopes of completing the concurrent education program at Nipissing University. Molly has known from a young age that her goals in life are to become a teacher and make a difference in the schooling systems. This award has given her the opportunity to see these goals through. “Coming to University I knew finances were going to be an issue. The financial help from this award has limited the stress and financial burden any typical student would experience from University. It has allowed me to focus on my school work and maintain my good grades without the pressure of having a part time job to balance with homework.” Melissa Corrente – 100th Year CFUW Graduate Award (2019-2020) The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) North Bay celebrated their 100th year anniversary in 2019 by providing a Nipissing University student a scholarship to help relieve some of the financial burdens associated with furthering one’s education. The recipient, Melissa Corrente, is a student who has completed her Bachelor of Education, Masters of Education, and is working towards her PhD in Education. Her thesis ‘Exploring the Experience of Graduate Studies within the Context of Parenthood’ explores further research on balancing life as a graduate student and a parent simultaneously. “The 100th year Anniversary Award from the CFUW helped me financially and socially. Not only did the scholarship cover some of the costs associated with pursuing a PhD, but since receiving the award I have become a member and joined the CFUW in North Bay. Being surrounded by supportive, strong and like minded women has reduced the isolation that comes with being a graduate student. Sharing my research and attending events hosted by the CFUW has greatly impacted my self-esteem and confidence as a scholar, mother, and teacher. Thank you very much for making a huge impact on my graduate journey.”

LIVES CHANGED Lea Cruickshank – Alumni Association Psychology Award (2018-2019) The Alumni Association Psychology Award is given to a mature student focusing on a major in Psychology. Lea Cruickshank completed a double major in Psychology and Geology and is now pursuing her Bachelors of Education. This award has helped her focus on her studies while also giving her the opportunity to volunteer with certain youth programs in the North Bay community and work towards her goal of becoming a youth educator. “Immersing myself in a six-year program has been the best thing I have done but it has come with a high price tag. As a student in my fifth year, there is definitely a financial burden school places on me and this award alleviates that. This award has impacted my education by allowing me to continue with my courses and take pressure off of me financially. In particular, this award has already allowed me to purchase a textbook for one of my courses as well as allow me to attend two optional field trips in my program. Thanks to my Donor, I will be able to do more things with my education this year, and that is no small thing.”
Matthew Fournier – Dr. Herbert Bruce Chapter IODE President’s Bursary (2018-2019) The Dr. Herbert Bruce Chapter IODE President’s bursary honours past, present, and future presidents of the Chapter. Matthew Fournier, a mature student at Nipissing University, is working towards completing his education and pursuing his dreams of becoming a doctor. This bursary has given him the opportunity to focus on his degree while continuing to provide for his family. Matthew shows a dedication to his education through his tough decision to return to University as a mature student. “The scholarship I received this year has gone directly to my tuition, which indirectly has helped my daughter and allowed me to provide that much more for her. This award covered the costs of my textbooks in whole. Without it, I may not have been able to afford this year’s textbooks and would risk a subpar grade in my courses, subsequently reducing my chances of becoming a doctor like I so desperately wish to do. Hopefully, this year produces another set of impeccable grades and I can continue on the path I’ve chosen for myself.”

LIVES CHANGED Jack and Mary Ann Jones International Exchange Award The Jack and Mary Ann Jones International Exchange Award is given to a mature student who is taking part in international exchange activities through Nipissing University. Jack Jones, a professor emeritus, is an integral member of the community here at Nipissing University. Jones joined the Nipissing family in 1984 through the Faculty of Education. He is a valued leader and a strong contributor to the University. Jones believes there is more to post secondary education beyond the academics. He values both travel and the positive impact international exchanges hold for the University. Jack and his wife, Mary Ann Jones, established the International Exchange Award with the hopes to give a student participating in an international exchange the opportunity to further their international experience by assisting with the costs that follow. “Mary Ann and I value travel. Not only is travel an integral aspect of education, it is also an excellent form of recruitment for the University. This bursary is about providing students who do not have the finances, the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. Donating is extremely rewarding. It supports students, and you too will benefit from your decision. It is one of the greatest investments you can make.” Student Caller, Kevin Grant “As a returning student to Nipissing, having received two other undergraduate degrees nearly 16 years ago, I have been given a unique perspective on the growth of the university. New technologies and campus expansions, such as the library and athletics centre, have taken what was always an outstanding academic institution and enhanced the prestige and functionality to an even higher standing. The continued support of donors to these projects, as well as their generosity towards scholarships, awards and bursaries, have elevated opportunities for students to achieve academic excellence. The importance of these endowments cannot be overstated. Working as a student caller has allowed me a fantastic opportunity to thank current and past donors for their continued generosity and support in making Nipissing such an esteemed institution, and afforded me the chance to spread my enthusiasm to new potential donors so that they can also become an integral part of this important endeavor.”

LIVES CHANGED Serena Leblond – Dr. Herbert Bruce Chapter IODE Julie Hewitt Memorial Scholarship (2018-2019) The Julie Hewitt Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a passion for gender equality and social justice. Serena Leblond is a mature student at Nipissing University who returned to North Bay to continue her education with the hopes of obtaining her Social Work Degree and later going on to obtain her Masters Degree. Serena is dedicated to making a difference and advocating for the rights and needs of others. Upon completion of her Masters, Serena plans on returning to North Bay and working to support causes such as homelessness and mental illness. Through this scholarship, Serena has been given the opportunity to pursue these dreams and help the people around her. “I quit my job and came back to North Bay to get my degree in Social Work because my voice wasn’t as loud as I wanted it to be. This award gave me an extra push, and the motivation I needed to continue pursuing my education. I am grateful for the recognition that follows this award. Balancing my degree and long distance parenting is hard work. This award helps me work less, pay my bills, and support my daughter with her schooling. Nipissing University allows me to make friendships with others in Social Work and build long term connections with my professors.”

LIVES CHANGED The Adopt-a-Laker program at Nipissing University helps athletes with the associated costs including training, travel, and equipment. Through this program the Men’s volleyball team has been given many opportunities and have been able to excel against their competition with the ability to compete at a high level, despite their busy schedules academically. Eric Yung, the head coach of the Men’s volleyball team for the past 9 seasons, is incredibly grateful for the Adopt-a-Laker program and the doors it opens for his athletes. Curtis MacPherson, a senior athlete on the Men’s Volleyball team is dedicated to working hard to improve his athletics and academics. The Adopt-a-Laker program helps Curtis and the rest of the team focus on their degrees and Volleyball careers simultaneously, and allows athletes to spend less time worrying about financials. “The Adopt-a-Laker initiative has enabled our program to be competitive at the highest level of volleyball in Canada. The funds generated have provided our high-performance student-athletes the opportunity to compete out of province and internationally. Adopta-Laker has been, and will continue to be, a strong driving force as we continue our pursuit of excellence on and off the court.” – Eric Yung “There are so many people that look to support me in whatever I am doing. These people help make the journey to being successful on and off the court so much easier. A large portion of my success can be attributed to people who are graciously willing to do what they can to see athletes on this team succeed. I am extremely grateful, not just for the support, but for the motivation to continue to pay it back in my own, and the teams’ successes.” – Curtis Macpherson
