“ We are very impressed with Nipissing’s Education Career Fair and the quality of graduates from the Schulich School of Education. The students are always well prepared, have strong resumes, and are interested in learning more about what the OCDSB has to offer. Over the last couple of years, the number of new teacher positions at the OCDSB has grown and we are continuing to add teaching positions. We have traditionally enjoyed great success with Nipissing University graduates.” Barry Scott, Human Resources Officer, Ottawa Carleton District School Board “ Nipissing’s Education Career Fair is extremely well organized and thoughtfully designed. The students are well organized, they ask smart questions, look professional and have given some thought to what they want in their career. We work with a lot of First Nations communities and the Nipissing students are prepared and knowledgeable about Indigenous education. It’s wonderful to meet future teachers who are so well-informed and open to working in the North.” Mattie Goetstouwers, Teacher Recruitment Manager, Teach for Canada

Practicum experiences allow students to connect educational theory with practical applications in the classroom and the entire school. Our graduates return to their classrooms with newly acquired skills and knowledge gained from the Indigenous Classroom Assistant Diploma Program to assist Indigenous children in elementary classrooms across the province. Q Q DIPLOMA PROGRAMS (CONTINUED)
Wiidooktaadwin is an Anishnaabe word that means “helping one another.” Wiidooktaadwin connects Indigenous Nipissing University students with Indigenous youth in local secondary schools. Every school year begins with an opening by an Elder in a teaching circle. Seven sessions are led by mentors in the schools, framed in the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Topics covered in Mentor sessions include leadership in community, working together, and the importance of sharing our gifts. University Mentors are asked to participate in a weekend of training, and volunteer for 2 hours weekly over 8 weeks in the Fall. In the Fall and Spring, we host two Aasgaabwitaadwin Indigenous Youth Leadership Conferences on campus. Aasgaabwitaadwin is an Anishnaabe word meaning “we are standing in support of one another.” Aasgaawitaadwin culminates in a celebration of the Wiidooktaadwin Mentorship Program for mentors, students, teachers, and community.

Nursing student earns humanitarian award Chante Ellis, a nursing student in Nipissing’s Scholar Practitioner Program, has earned a prestigious 2018 Sopman Humanitarian Award from the University Health Network. Ellis is one of 14 nursing students at the University Health Network that was nominated. She is in her first year of the 2-year Scholar Practitioner Program, an innovative second degree nursing program for university graduates looking to pursue nursing at the bachelor of science level. “When I learned about the award, I was definitely in shock, then felt extreme gratitude that my professor and preceptor recognized my ability to provide compassionate care in practice,” said Ellis. “Awards that commend student nurses are invaluable because they encourage the development of exceptional future nurses.” The awards were established by the Sopman family nearly four decades ago to recognize emerging physicians, surgeons and nurses who, in addition to their academic and clinical excellence, have demonstrated profound compassion toward their patients and colleagues.
Every year The Office of Indigenous Initiatives co-hosts a welcome powwow. Dancers, students and community are invited to participate in this celebration of song and dance.

IN STUDENT RESEARCH GR ANTS 2014 – 2019
Turning ideas into reality For award winning business student Jeremy Butterworth, the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course he took in 2017 instantly helped him realize his dreams. The third-year student turned his course-work into a full-fledged business opportunity, with external funding allowing him to make a reality out of his idea for a fitness-based app, named Flex. “My professors were incredibly helpful in pushing me to flesh out all aspects of the business plan, including financial forecasting and competitor analysis. They really helped me synthesize the plan to become a professional product, and also helped me to find grants that were available for young entrepreneurs. I highly recommend this course to any students interested in entrepreneurship.” Jeremy is now working with a company to develop the app and is planning to launch Flex this year.
Faculty research at Nipissing contributes to a better understanding of o ur communities and ourselves.
great research = first rate teaching Dr. Carly Dokis, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, is working with Anishinaabe communities in Northern Ontario on the ways that risk calculation around water quality is constructed, and how water is known and experienced by community members. One of the strengths of this research program, funded by SSHRC, is the adoption of an exploratory methodology established cooperatively with Dokis First Nation, which involves exchanging accounts about a common theme in the form of storycircles. Storycircles bring together an interdisciplinary team of knowledge holders and expertise to better understand the subjective and affective consequences of water quality risks for Indigenous peoples in Canada – an issue of direct importance to Indigenous communities, policy-makers, scholars, and the general public.

Q Q ECONOMICS
Bachelor of Arts (three-year)
Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science Economics is the study of how society allocates its scarce resources to satisfy needs and wants. An understanding of economics is essential for understanding how the world works. Why do we have economic booms followed by periods of slow growth and high unemployment? Economics is concerned with the social science behind these kinds of questions. Our Economics program examines theories and concepts that help explain how the economy works and emphasizes how economics is connected to other disciplines such as business administration, finance, geography, political science, and psychology. The study of economics also includes the critical examination of government policies that impact on individuals, markets, and society in general. Career and Academic Options

As one of few programs of its kind in Canada, the Gender Equality and Social Justice program will teach you to think critically about who has the power in the world, and why, as well as how to resist, shape, and change power for social justice. She seeks to better understand how the circulation of people, knowledge, commodities, and organisms generated environmental consequences throughout and beyond these networks. Her research ties these regions to broader global geopolitical and environmental processes, as well as to different forms of knowledge production involved in making the regions viable for military strategy, trade, settlement and natural resource exploitation from the 1800s-1960s.

Q Q PHILOSOPHY
Q Q POLITICAL SCIENCE
Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Arts
Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science
Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science
Thinking about a major? Why not major in thinking? Rather than being concerned with a particular set of questions or a particular period of time, philosophy concerns itself with the nature of inquiry, thought, and argument itself, asking how each of these operates in the various areas of human life, from ethics and politics to the study of nature and reality. This means that philosophy students take up the truly big questions: What is the best life? Why should we be moral? How is knowledge possible? Is the world really as it appears to us? How does the mind work? At the same time, the skills students develop in pursuit of a degree in philosophy – careful reading, charitable interpretation and discussion, and rigorous argumentation – have proven themselves to be useful in innumerable fields within and beyond the university.
The Political Science program at Nipissing is focused on preparing students to be engaged citizens through education in the history of political thought, international relations, comparative politics, public administration, and Canadian democratic institutions. Our aim is to educate students capable of contributing to civil society through an applicable liberal arts education, drawing on an understanding of great books and political systems to address perennial political questions in a contemporary context.
The Philosophy Program at Nipissing is small and student-focused: students get to know and work closely with both their professors and their peers. The department is particularly committed to introducing students to the history of philosophy, from the ancient period to the present. The program is designed to work well either as a stand-alone degree or as a combined degree with other programs, and there are numerous philosophy courses offered each year that do not have prerequisites and that are popular electives for students in other programs. Bachelor of Social Work
Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science
Offered by the Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies
What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? How did religion develop? Why do we die? Where does evil come from? If you have wondered about some of these questions, you will find a course in Religions and Cultures that asks them and engages in dialogue about the different possible answers. You will be introduced to the world’s major religious traditions and will develop your knowledge in the academic study of religion. Courses will raise your awareness about gender and the Bible, examine the role of religion in society, deepen your understanding of religion’s contributions to peace and violence, get you thinking about the environment, and inspire your imagination with sacred cinema and literature.
The goal of social work is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, groups, and communities dealing with personal and/or social issues such as disability, poverty, discrimination, chronic illness, interpersonal violence, addiction or social isolation. The degree will help you develop the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to advocate for change and social improvement. The program includes course work within social sciences (which may include psychology, social welfare, religion, philosophy and sociology) as well as social work-specific content and a 900-hour field education practicum. The practicum provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical learning to supervised work in a health and social care setting. In second-year, students are required to apply for admission to the professional years (Years 3 and 4). Admission to the first or second-year of the program does not guarantee acceptance into the professional years and admission consideration is based on both academic and non-academic criteria.
