THE 23rd annual Belfast Pride Festival takes place from June 28 to July 6 and includes a week-long programme of events, ranging from lectures, exhibitions and performing arts. The theme this year is ‘Bright Colours and Bold Statements for Equality’ and information on events can be found on the Belfast Pride Festival website at www.belfastpride.com. The festival culminates on Pride Day – Saturday, July 6 – with the Pride Parade through Belfast city centre followed by a Party In The Square (PITS). The assembly point for the parade is Custom House Square, which will be opened from 10am and the parade itself starts at 12 noon. The Belfast Pride community stalls – ‘The Pride Village’ – will be set out in an area adjacent to the Obel building from 11am to 4pm. General Secretary Brian Campfield told NIPSA Reports: “In line with NIPSA’s objective of promoting equal opportunities for all members and developing positive policies to promote equality of opportunity, the union is supporting the festival and Pride Day. “NIPSA banners will be carried on the parade and we will have a stall at The Pride Village. On behalf of the General Council, we wish to encourage branches and members to take part in the week’s activities and particularly the Pride Parade on Saturday, July 6.”

PSNI forensic specialists vow to continue on-call payments fight NIPSA members working as crime scene investigators for the PSNI have vowed to continue their industrial action until they secure equitable on-call payments for work done during evenings and at weekends. The C6 Scientific Support specialists began their action – which involves a refusal to work on-call rotas – on June 7. NIPSA Assistant Secretary Ryan McKinney told NIPSA Reports: “Support remains absolutely solid after a huge majority voted in favour of taking industrial action. “Despite attempts by Management Side to dissuade

members from participating, it has had the opposite effect with more staff joining NIPSA in the last couple of weeks.” NIPSA has called for scientific staff employed by the PSNI to be treated equally as their counterparts in the Forensic Science Agency. The union points out that both sets of workers provide similar services but those within the PSNI are paid less. NIPSA, which represents about 120 of the 140 forensic staff, said PSNI employees who attend crime scenes should receive similar allowances as their Forensic Science NI colleagues. Mr McKinney said: “Staff are determined to hold out

McCrea MLA calling on the Justice Minister to address the equal pay concerns of these civil servants as a priority. Mr Bannon said: “Four of the main political parties supported the motion in the June 4 debate, with MLAs talking of commitments to equality of treatment, fairness, natural justice and addressing moral obligations to reflect a positive resolution. “NIPSA has for the past three years called on the Northern Ireland Executive to address this unfairness. “NIPSA has also presented evidence to the Finance and Personnel and Justice Committees of the Assembly. These committees support the call for positive resolution and so too do most political parties and MLAs.” He added: “Given this high level of support, surely it is time to right what everyone has recognised and acknowledge is an injustice?”
