Seagliders Seagliders are autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV’s) that are used for in situ measurements in the seawater column. The vehicles are powered by batteries and can cover distances up to 4,000 km in a single mission, collecting oceanographic data at depths from the surface to one thousand meters. Their battery autonomy is up to six months, giving the advantage to scientists to monitor constantly and in real time changes that appear in the seawater column. From the surface of the water, the sea-gliders have the ability to exchange data with the server (located in the Oceanography Centre at the University of Cyprus) via satellite during their mission; they record data that are related to the characteristics of the water column such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll concentration, sea currents and others. The measurements of these underwater vehicles will help scientists to improve numerical models and to provide operational currents, temperature and salinity profiles of the sea around Cyprus. These projections are especially useful to commercial businesses, search and rescue organizations and for predicting of oil spill dispersions. Although two seagilders belong to the Oceanography Centre that are under the YPOKINOUMODA research program coordinated by Dr. Daniel Hayes, they will be used in cooperation with the Nireas Marine Research Organisation for additional measurements into areas facing pressure from human activities.
